DUBAI INTERNATIONAL RACING CARNIVAL NEWS

It’s a Super Saturday for South Africa

Victory Moon looks an awesome prospect for the US$6,000,000 Dubai World Cup (Gr.I), sponsored by Emirates Airline, in three weeks time, after a convincing win in the final round of the HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.III) at Nad Al Sheba on Super Saturday, sponsored by BurJuman.

Partnered by Weichong Marwing, the Mike de Kock-trained four-year-old was settled in fourth place in the 2,000 metre US$300,000 dirt race, with the field being taken along by Godolphin’s Naheef under Frankie Dettori. Into the straight the Turkish raider Dinyeper, trained by Ayhan Kasar, had set sail for home with Victory Moon boxed in on the rail.

Marwing was hard at work with Victory Moon pulled three wide at the 150 metres mark and showing an amazing turn of foot to win by two and a quarter lengths from Dinyeper in second, just over three lengths ahead of Naheef.

Fair Mix, trained in France by Marcel Rolland and ridden by Olivier Peslier, looks all set for his run in the US$2,000,000 Dubai Sheema Classic (Gr.I), sponsored by The Palm, after winning the US$200,000 BurJuman Dubai City of Gold (Gr.III) over 2,400 metres.

St Expedit took the field along, but it was the six-year-old son of Linamix, who had been tracking the leader, that stepped up a gear to take the lead just after the 400 metre post and ran on for a two length win. Prince of War, with Marwing in the saddle, came with a late run to get past Godolphin’s Lunar Sovereign to take second.

Peslier commented, “The horse is very well and I did not want to wait too long to take the lead as he takes a bit of time to get going. It is his first run of the season but he has been working well. He will be a good contender for the Dubai Sheema Classic.”

Gerard Butler’s Compton Bolter and John Oxx’s Mkuzi were both squeezed for room in the closing stages and did not get any kind of a run.

Petit Paris, trained in Saudi Arabia by Jerry Burton and ridden by Willie Supple, earned himself an invitation to the US$2,000,000 UAE Derby (Gr.II) when making all to win the US$150,000 BurJuman Al Bastakiya, over the Derby course and distance of 1,800 metres.

The Chilean bred three-year-old broke well and never looked in any danger pulling away from the field to win by two and three quarter lengths. De Kock’s Lundy’s Liability stayed on for second with the Ted Durcan-partnered UAE 2,000 Guineas winner Little Jim in third.

After the race Supple said, “It was a good result, he jumped well and he settled. I was very happy and he had a good bit left in the tank.”

Cherry Pickings, trained by Mazin Al Kurdi, put up a great performance to go clear approaching the wire to give jockey Ryan Moore a win in the US$130,000 BurJuman Bur Nahaar (Listed), the prep race for the US$1,000,000 Godolphin Mile (Gr.II), sponsored by Jebel Ali International Hotels.

Richard Mullen aboard Tropical Star took the lead into the straight from Gary Hind’s mount Estimraar. Cherry Pickings was making good progress and had the lead at the 200 metres, running on for a three and a quarter length win from Tropical Star and Godolphin’s Divine Task a further length and a quarter back in third. Estimraar, finishing in sixth, should come on for the run.

After the race Moore said, “He is a very tough horse and he has improved in every race, the race went perfectly and he picked up well.”

South Africa look to have a strong hand for the US$2,000,000 Dubai Duty Free following the convincing win by the de Kock-trained Surveyor, the mount of Marwing, in the US$200,000 BurJuman Jebel Hatta (Gr.III) over the Dubai Duty Free trip of 1,777 metres.

Godolphin’s Vespone, under Dettori, led the 12 runner field along with Surveyor well placed in fourth, 200 metres out Marwing pushed the four-year-old to the lead. Vespone tried to battle hard and the pair crossed the line head to head with Surveyor getting up by a short-head Mick Channon’s Checkit ran on well for third with Trademark in fourth.

After the race de Kock said, “He is a very genuine horse, he really deserved the win. He lost out to his stable mate last time (Right Approach) and he got his reward today.”

Conroy, trained by Aditiyan Selvaratnam and ridden by Frankie Dettori, was always at the head of affairs and ran on for a half length win inthe US$200,000 BurJuman Mahab Al Shimaal (Gr.III) over the straight 1,200 metres for the third year running.

Conroy managed to resist the challenge from the fast finishing Sleeping Weapon, the mount of Willie Supple. Dantana, trained in Macau by Peter Leyshan, disputed the early lead put could not stay on terms with the winner finishing in fourth behind San Salvador.

It was a battle to the line between two of the leading Purebred Arabians currently in training in the Emirates, Kaolino and Van Nistelrooy, in the final round of the HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.I), sponsored by BurJuman, over 2,000 metres.

Winner of the first leg of the Maktoum Challenge Velte, the mount of Gary Hind, took the field along with the Richard Hills-partnered Kaolino and Ted Durcan’s ride Van Nistelrooy making progress on the outside to dispute the lead at the 400 metre pole.

Both jockeys were hard at work but Van Nistelrooy, trained by Mazin Al Kurdi got up to cross the line half a length ahead of the Gillian Duffield-trained Kaolino, Royal Epic came with a late run for third with Tidjam Lotois in fourth.
