ASCOT RACECOURSE RECEIVES LEVY BOARD ASSISTANCE FOR UNIQUE CROSSING SOLUTION

The Horserace Betting Levy Board is to assist Ascot racecourse in improving the racing surface through the provision of a £550,000 interest-free loan.

The Levy Board's financial help will see an unique moveable turf crossing installed at Ascot's Kennel Gate road crossing to provide horses with a continuous and level racing surface.

A prototype, developed by the Sports Turf Research Institute, has been successfully tested on a Newmarket gallop, being moved in and out and maintaining a level surface which horses passed over safely.

Horses sometimes attempt to jump present temporary crossings, which can affect their prospects in a race.

The project involves a section of turf constructed in a steel tray and moved on rails. The construction work is due to start this summer, with potential installation for the 2000/2001 National Hunt season and full installation for the 2001 Flat season. The total cost of the project is £1,000,000.

Douglas Erskine-Crum, Ascot's Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted that the Levy Board is prepared to support innovation in British racing. This is an important part of Ascot's objective to remove road and pedestrian crossings from the track."

If this new crossing is as successful as expected, similar ones could be used at other British courses which have road crossings.

Robert Hughes, the Levy Board Chairman, commented: "The Levy Board is happy to support this innovative project which will help to provide a permanent solution to the problems associated with road crossings."

AINTREE NOT ON AGENDA FOR LIMESTONE LAD

The James Bowe-trained Limestone Lad, who ran a marvellous race at the Cheltenham Festival when going down by a length to Bacchanal in the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle, will miss the Martell Aintree Hurdle on March 8.

James Bowe's son, Michael Bowe, commented: "We've decided against bringing Limestone Lad back to England again so soon after Cheltenham. Two and a half miles around a sharp track like Aintree, with the likelihood of fast ground, wouldn't really suit the horse.

"The plan is to wait for the Grade One Ballymore Properties Champion Stayers' Hurdle over three miles at the Punchestown Festival. But that will depend on the ground as we wouldn't want it too quick for him."

PRIMO VALENTINO HEADS FOR GREENHAM

Primo Valentino, trained by Peter Harris in Berkhampstead, Hertfordshire, who won five races as a two-year-old, including the Group One Saudi Arabian Airlines Middle Park Stakes, will reappear at Newbury on April 15.

His chosen target is the Group Three Lane's End Greenham Stakes, won last year by the Henry Cecil-trained Enrique. Primo Valentino is currently a top-priced 25/1 with the Tote for the Sagitta 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 6.

Peter Harris commented: "He will almost certainly run in the Greenham. I'm confident he'll get a mile and I think he'll get further. He hasn't grown a great deal taller but he has filled out."
