THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

UTTOXETER, SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 2000

Cheltenham has come and gone and now we have to ponder on the

2.35pm £75,000 Marstons Pedigree Midlands Grand National Handicap Chase 4m 2f

Going - Good, good to firm in places

BP = best price of Coral, William Hill, Ladbrokes and Tote

1) 02F-452 ESCARTEFIGUE Paul Nicholls 8-11-10 bl Mick Fitzgerald
Showed his first real form for a while when second in a conditions chase at Wincanton on February 24. Never run over this sort of trip but should stay. BP 9/1 Ladbrokes

2) 011-P5P LISTEN TIMMY Alan King 11-11-05 Andrew Thornton
Failed to show his form so far this season. Another who has not tried this trip.BP 9/1 Coral & Ladbrokes.

3) F1-1112 EDMOND Henry Daly 8-10-13 Richard Johnson
Useful stayer who stays and acts on soft ground. So these conditions may be against him. However he must still have a fine chance. Stable in form. BP 3/1 Coral & Tote

4) P-04243 STEP ON EYRE Henry Daly 10-10-02 Steve Wynne
In and out form this season. Well held by stable companion Edmond here in February. Stable in form.BP 12/1 William Hill

JUYUSH - NON-RUNNER

6) 4P-1452 FLAKED OATS Paul Nicholls 11-10-00 bl Robert Widger
Held by Edmond on last month's Uttoxeter form and was subsequently second on his first outing over hurdles. Cannot be dismissed. 3lb out of the handicap. BP 9/1 William Hill & Tote

7) 12-5212 ACKZO Ferdy Murphy 7-10-00 bl Adrian Maguire
Ran brilliantly lat time to be a beaten a neck by Scotton Green at Newcastle over this sort of trip. Now 4lb better off. That was heavy ground and conditions are going to be very different today. 6lb out of the handicap. BP 9/2 Tote

8) -23P211 SCOTTON GREEN Tim Easterby 9-10-00 Lorcan Wyer
Won the Tote Northern National last time out. Stays well and acts on most ground conditions. Must have a fair chance despite being 11lb out of the handicap. BP 7/1 Ladbrokes & Tote

9) 233P222 DOM BELTRANO Nigel Twiston-Davies 8-10-00 Carl Llewllyn
Very consistent and should stay this trip. But has yet to prove he likes this sort of ground.12lb out of the handicap. BP 16/1 Tote

10) 503/642d ANOTHER EXCUSE Eugene O'Sullivan 12-10-00 bl Norman Williamson
Won this race in 1996 and has been lightly-raced since, finishing third in 1998. 18lb out of the handicap. Stable in form. BP 33/1 except Ladbrokes

SUMMARY
A fairly open race with the faster ground being the great imponderable. EDMOND may be favourite but he looks very good value, with many of the runners out of the handicap and doubts about others.

GOOD LUCK
