BUMPER 50 FOR RED SQUARE VODKA GOLD CUP - Francois Doumen discusses his plans for Moulin Riche, Innox & First Gold

The 2006 renewal of the £125,000 Grade Three Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, the highlight at Haydock Park on Saturday, February 18, has attracted a record 50 entries, details of which are revealed today, Wednesday, February 1. The previous record number of entries was 46 in 2005, while two years ago there were 36 entries.

Last year saw Forest Gunner (allocated 10st 5lb this year by the handicapper) come home a length and a half in front of Double Honour (10st 5lb) in the extended three and a half mile handicap chase before running a fine race to finish fifth in the Grand National. Both horses are entered again this year in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup which is part of the British Horseracing Board's Order Of Merit bonus scheme.

Martin Pipe is the trainer with the largest number of entries, with nine to choose from at this stage. Pipe's possible representatives are Therealbandit (11st 4lb), successful in this season's Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby, Joaaci (11st 3lb), an impressive winner of his seasonal debut at Cheltenham on New Year's Day, last season's Grand National fourth It Takes Time (11st 3lb), Comply Or Die (10st 13lb), Iris Bleu (10st 6lb), useful novice Bannow Strand (10st 3lb), Control Man (9st 10lb), 2004 Grand National third Lord Atterbury (9st 9lb) and recent Chepstow scorer Korelo (9st 8lb).

Paul Nicholls is also well represented with seven horses engaged. They are last season's Grand National runner-up Royal Auclair, who has top-weight of 11st 12lb, recent impressive Warwick Classic Chase scorer Eurotrek (10st 13lb), the 2004 Welsh National victor Silver Birch (10st 7lb), this season's Welsh National heroine L'Aventure (10st 5lb), Colourful Life (9st 13lb), Heros Collonges (10t 2lb) and Lou du Moulin Mas (9st 7lb).

There are five entries from Ireland, including Another Rum (10st 2lb), winner of the National Hunt Chase at last season's Cheltenham Festival, and What A Native (9st 4lb), who landed the valuable Pierse Leopardstown Handicap Chase last month.

Francois Doumen provides the three French-trained entries in the form of Innox (10st 8lb), last seen out when taking a valuable handicap chase at Cheltenham in November, King George VI Chase victor First Gold (10st 5lb) and Moulin Riche (9st 7lb), victorious in the Brit Insurance Novices' Hurdle at the 2005 Cheltenham Festival.

Moulin Riche is an intriguing entry, having won the three-mile Grade Two Brit Insurance Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last year. He was last seen when falling four hurdles from home behind Mighty Man back at Cheltenham in December.

Doumen revealed today: "Moulin Riche could be a runner in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, but he may run in the Agfa Diamond Chase at Sandown on Saturday first. I'm having a bit of trouble training horses at the moment because of the frost in France, but he is well.

"He was never right from the beginning at Cheltenham last time and I didn't manage to find out why, but the horse seems to be in such good form that I'm quite keen to run him on Saturday to start with. That will let us see how he's doing and then we'll consider Haydock."

Moulin Riche has never raced over fences in Britain but won the Prix Nupsala at Auteuil in November, 2004 on the most recent of his five chase starts, when he held Mort De Rire by one and a half lengths.

The French handler revealed: "He is a horse who has always respected his jumps, so I don't envisage that the English fences will be a problem.

"I would like to give him two runs before Cheltenham and then we'll know which way he goes."

Doumen reports First Gold in rude health ahead of his intended start in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, which could be a stepping-stone to the Grand National.

The trainer said: "I might run First Gold at Haydock because he hasn't been better for a long time. He's amazingly well. Freshness suits him and he's on top form.

"I have the Grand National at the back of my mind, because that has been the wish of Mr McManus for a long time. I have always preferred to go for the Betfair Bowl (at Aintree), but First Gold is now 13 and has calmed down, and it is probably the right time to try the National."

Innox has had the Grand National as his long-term aim since winning over three miles, three and a half furlongs at Cheltenham in November.

The 10-year-old has not raced since and, while he holds an entry for the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, Doumen revealed a more likely target for his charge on the same card.

He commented: "Innox will go for the Grand National and he could run in the two mile seven furlong Brit Insurance Prestige Novices' Hurdle at Haydock."

Other interesting entries for the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup include Iris's Gift (10st 12lb), who could use the race as a springboard to the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup, Haydock Park regular Chives (10st 11lb), successful in the 2004 Tommy Whittle Chase, the 2003 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner One Knight (11st 4lb) and Ginger McCain's duo of 2004 Grand National victor Amberleigh House (9st 12lb) and Ebony Light (10st 5lb), last seen out when defeating Kingscliff to cause a 33/1 upset in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock Park on January 21.

Kirkland Tellwright, Clerk of the Course at Haydock Park, commented: "We are absolutely delighted to have received a record entry of 50 for the 2006 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup.

"The contest's stature continues to grow year after year and it is very pleasing to see so many high-class performers among the possible starters at this stage.

"The position of the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup in the racing calendar makes it a perfect trial for both Cheltenham and Aintree, as well as offering a very significant prize in its own right."

RED SQUARE VODKA GOLD CUP HISTORY

Haydock's most valuable handicap chase, the £125,000 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, previously known as the Greenalls Grand National Trial and the De Vere Gold Cup, takes place on Saturday, February 18.

This prestigious extended three and a half mile event, supported by Red Square Vodka for the fourth time, always attracts some of the big names in racing and is an ideal prep race for the John Smith's Grand National.

Red Rum ran at Haydock before every one of his five Grand Nationals, of which he won three and came second in the other two, and Party Politics (1992 Grand National) and Earth Summit (1998 Grand National) also used the race as their stepping stone to Aintree success. Party Politics finished fifth at Haydock before going on to success at Aintree while Earth Summit was fifth in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup prior his Grand National win.

Last season saw Forest Gunner put himself firmly in the picture for the John Smith's Grand National with a length and a half defeat of Double Honour in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup. He went on to run a fine race at Aintree under Carrie Ford, coming home fifth to Hedgehunter. Last year's third, Kelami, subsequently tasted success in the William Hill Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, while the fourth L'Aventure has captured this season's Welsh National at Chepstow.

Champion jump trainer Martin Pipe enjoyed his second Red Square Vodka Gold Cup success two years ago, when Jurancon II came home 15 lengths clear of Bear On Board under conditional jockey Joey Elliott.

The Paul Nicholls-trained Shotgun Willy won the 2003 renewal in a thrilling finish, beating his half-brother, Welsh National winner Mini Sensation, Grand National winner Bindaree and Take Control, the 2002 Scottish Grand National hero.

Frantic Tan enjoyed a runaway success when winning for Nigel Twiston-Davies in 2001, while The Last Fling, trained by Sue Smith and owned by Trevor Hemmings, completed a memorable treble when successful in 2000, having already landed two other major chases at Haydock, the Edward Hanmer Memorial Chase and Peter Marsh Chase

The Peter Beaumont-trained Young Kenny jumped to the front and never looked likely to relinquish his lead when he won in 1999. The Ardross gelding went on to justify favouritism in that year's Scottish Grand National.

Martin Pipe had his first winner when the bold jumping Dom Samourai earned a well-deserved success in 1998, with Earth Summit in fifth.

Suny Bay produced a near-faultless display of jumping to win in 1997, and had his odds slashed for the Grand National at Aintree, where he finished runner-up to Lord Gyllene. The following season he filled the same position at Liverpool, this time behind Earth Summit.

In 1993 the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup was won by top-weight Party Politics, who had been victorious in the previous year's Grand National. He also went on to finish seven lengths runner-up to Royal Athlete in the 1995 renewal at Aintree.

Not just a pointer towards Grand Nationals, the race also bodes well for future totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup winners.

Adrian Maguire steered Cool Ground to victory at Haydock in 1992 and was again in the saddle when defeating The Fellow by a short-head at Prestbury Park in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup less than a month later.

The Peter Easterby-trained Alverton, the 1979 Haydock victor, also followed up in that year's Gold Cup when he justified joint-favouritism at Cheltenham under a fine ride from Jonjo O'Neill.

Three years earlier Royal Frolic also achieved this magnificent big race double for owner Sir Edward Hanmer. He ran on well in the Gold Cup to beat Brown Lad by five lengths in an 11-strong field which also consisted of Glanford Brigg (the 1974 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup hero) in fifth and beaten favourite Bula one place further back.

Bregawn was hampered two out when the length second behind Scot Lane in the 1982 renewal of the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup. The following year he triumphed in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

FACTS AND FIGURES FOR THE RED SQUARE VODKA GOLD CUP

- The late Ken Oliver holds the best record of trainers in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, having won the race three times with Young Ash Leaf in 1972, Tregarron the following season and The Benign Bishop in 1975. Two other trainers who are no longer with us - Tony Dickinson and Gordon Richards - were successful twice. The former scored with Rainbow Valley in 1971 and Cavity Hunter in 1980, while Richards struck with Rinus in 1990 and Twin Oaks the following year. Martin Pipe is the only current to trainer to have recorded more than one success, with Dom Samourai (1998) and Jurancon II (2004).

- Four jockeys have been successful twice. The first was Tommy Stack, victorious on Half Awake in 1968 and Young Ash Leaf in 1972, followed by the now leading trainer Jonjo O'Neill, who won on Rambling Artist in 1978 and Alverton the following year. Chris Grant was successful on Sunset Cristo in 1981 and Midnight Love in 1984, while the only current jockey to have scored twice is Carl Llewellyn - on Party Politics in 1993 and Frantic Tan in 2001.

- No owner has won the Red Square Vodka Gold Cold Cup on more than one occasion.

- Eight-year-olds have the best record, having won on nine occasions. Next best are nine and seven-year-olds with seven successes each, followed by 10-year-olds on six victories and six-year-olds with two wins. Twin Oaks in 1991 and Forest Gunner in 2005 were both 11-year-olds.

- In 2003 the Paul Nicholls-trained Shotgun Willy produced the best weight-carrying effort when shouldering 11st 12lb to victory. At the other end of the weight spectrum, four horses have carried the minimum of 10st to glory - Scot Lane in 1982, Lo Stregone in 1996, Dom Samourai in 1998 and Young Kenny in 1999.

- Favourites have a fair record, having been successful eight times in 33 renewals (24%). However, only one market leader has scored since 1992. The longest-priced winner was Party Politics in 1993, when Nick Gaselee's charge was sent off at 16/1.

- The highest number of horses to go to post was 18 in 2001, the year that Nigel Twiston-Davies's Frantic Tan justified favouritism. The smallest field was four in 1989. There were 11 runners last year.

- There has been one Irish-trained victor - Nuaffe who won in 1995 for trainer Pat Fahy, jockey Sean O'Donovan and owner John Doyle.
