THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

WETHERBY, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2004

3.15pm £10,000 added Rocom Handicap Hurdle 2m

GOING: Soft, heavy in places

BP = best odds offered from Coral Eurobet, Ladbrokes, Tote, Stanleybet. Bet365, William Hill

1) -F99 Through The Rye 28 Alan Swinbank 8-11-12 Jim Crowley 138
Has yet to sparkle this season but is not without talent and likes this very soft ground.

BP=16/1 Ladbrokes. Tote, Bet365 & William Hill

2) P0-P Bernardon 14 Rae Guest 8-11-06 Henry Oliver 139
Saddle slipped last time on his first outing for 12 months. Has a chance on his eighth in last year’s Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury and cannot be dismissed especially as his trainer is in form and so is the jockey after his biggest success last week.

BP=9/1 Coral Eurobet, Ladbrokes, Tote & William Hill

3) F-03 Nas Na Riogh 64 Nicky Henderson 5-11-06 Marcus Foley 139
Useful juvenile hurdler. His most recent start was in a novice chase. Is a shorter price than he should be because of the trainer and is worth opposing.

BP=13/8 Coral Eurobet & Bet365

4) 6365 Maceo 17 Mary Reveley 10-10-06 D C Costello(10) 137
His form seems to have been deteriorating rather than improving this season.

BP= 14/1 Tote

5) 3F5F Avitta 14 Venetia Williams 5-10-05 Tony Dobbin 135
Had every chance when falling at the last at Cheltenham at the end of last month. Her jumping is the problem, also she also fell in a hurdle earlier in the season. Must be respected though on her ability as along as she can negotiate the obstacles.

BP=3/1 Ladbrokes, Stanleybet & William Hill

6) P280 Talarive 2 Peter Niven 8-10-05 Alan Ross 138
Has had plenty of racing and only showed good form when second at Uttoxeter three runs ago.

BP=18/1 William Hill

7) 3-03 Witch ìs Brew 14 Tim Easterby 7-10-00 D O ìMeara(3) 132
Consistent mare who has a chance. Third at Catterick last time out.

BP=7/1 Tote

8) 2430 I Got Rhythm 19 Mary Reveley 6-10-00 Mr O Nelmes(7) 132
Mare who has shown some ability and was not disgraced last time out at Doncaster despite her placing. Heavy ground is a query though.

BP=9/1 Tote & William Hill

SUMMARY
This is a very open race so it is worth opposing the two market leaders. Nas Na Riogh is at ridiculous odds while Avitta has fallen in two of her last three outings. It is worth taking a chance with BERNADON who could pay to back each-way at Tote pool odds.
