LITTLE JIM LANDS THE UAE 2000 GUINEAS
Little Jim and Ted Durcan put up an impressive display to win the UAE 2,000 Guineas (Gr.III) over 1,600 metres on the second race meeting of the Dubai International Racing Carnival at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday evening. Trained by Satish Seemar, the Argentinean bred was always well placed, with the field being taken along by the Frankie Dettori-partnered Rosencrans.
Jack Sullivan, owned by the International Carnival Partnership and trained by Gerard Butler, was towards the rear early on, but jockey Eddie Ahern looked to have a lot of horse under him. Into the straight Little Jim cruised to the lead and set sail from home. Rosencrans was staying on, but finishing fastest of all was Jack Sullivan, who battled hard to finish two and a half lengths second to Little Jim with Rosencrans in third.
After the race Durcan said, "He is a lovely horse and there is improvement in him. I would think a mile is his shortest trip and we will check with the owner but the UAE Derby could be his target."
National Currency set the Nad Al Sheba dirt ablaze with an awesome run to win the Al Shindagha Sprint (Listed) over 1,200 metres under Weichong Marwing. Drawn in the six gate, the Michael Azzie-trained sprint sensation, broke well and went straight to the front. The son of National Assembly was shaken up approaching the line and ran to an easy six and a half length win.
Persuasivo Fitz, trained by Allan Smith, stayed on for second with last week's sprint winner San Salvador in third.
After the race Azzie said, "We have no doubt that he would handle the dirt, he is a good horse and good horses can handle any surface. He has been a champion from the start of day one, he is an awesome horse and a pleasure to train. I have to thank the Sheikh and all the people here in the Emirates for the Carnival, they have put on a great show.
"The plan is now to run him in the Mahab Al Shimaal (Gr.III) on Super Saturday and then the Dubai Golden Shaheen (Gr.I), but we will see how he has come out of today's race, though Weichong said that he pulled up well."
Grand Stand, trained by Peter Leyshan, put one up on the board for Macau when he won the opening race, the Family & Favourites International Rated Stakes over 1,800 metres. Richard Hills took the field along aboard the Erwan Charpy-trained Elghani, but Grand Stand, under Kerrin McEvoy, came with a great run to lead at the 400 metre marker. The New Zealand bred seven-year-old kept on to win by three quarters of a length from Elghani.
After the race McEvoy, who was winning on his seasonal debut in the Emirates said, "Peter (Leyshan) said he might be a run short, but he had a turn of foot when I asked and it was a good effort. I enjoyed myself here last season and am looking forward to my time here. This was a
great win for Macau,"
It was Grand Stand who started the international ball rolling on the second day of the Dubai International Racing Carnival, on a day that saw overseas contenders pick up US$252,500 in win and place prize money.
Litigado went pillar to post in the second race of the evening, the Fillies & Fashion International Rated Stakes over 2,000 metres. Partnered by Paul Hanagan, the Paddy Rudkin-trained seven-year-old set a good pace and was shaken up when challenged by the Charpy-trained
Nooshman.
Race favourite Deodatus, also from the Charpy stable, could not catch the winner and had to settle for third.
Michael Kinane rode his first winner in the UAE when partnering the Smith-trained Seihali in the Picnics & Paddocks International Rated Stakes over 1,600 metres on the turf. St Expedit, under Brett Doyle made the running until Seihali came to lead at the 200 metre pole and ran on to a length and a half win.
Jeremy Noseda's Wizard of Noz, under Dettori, ran well for second with Butler's Boston Lodge staying on for third.
After the race Kinane said, "It has taken a while to ride my first winner here, but I have not been over here that much."
Zaajel, Hills up, held on to win the final race of the evening, the Jockeys and Jazz Handicap over 2,400 metres on the turf, by a neck from the fast finishing Kayseri, Brett Doyle in the saddle.
