RIGHT APPROACH LANDS THE AL RASHIDIYA FOR DE KOCK

Right Approach trained by South African-based Mike de Kock got up in the shadow of the wire to win the US$140,000 Al Rashidiya (Listed) over 1,777 metres on the Nad Al Sheba turf, on Saturday evening, the sixth meeting of the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

Formerly owned by The Queen and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, Right Approach was having his first run for de Kock. Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, the son of Machiavellian was settled in the rear with the Rashid Bouresly-trained St Expedit giving the field an 11 length lead. Into the straight it was St Expedit that still had the lead with the de Kock-trained Surveyor eating into his stride.

From the 100 metre market Right Approach began to make progress, getting up in the final strides to win by a neck from Surveyor, with St Expedit a neck back in third with Mick Channon’s Checkit a head back in fourth.

After the race de Kock said, “We wanted to buy a horse for no money and have a bash in Dubai and so we went to England and bought Right Approach. He was given a great ride by Kerrin (McEvoy) and we will now look at the Dubai Duty Free.”

Big Easy won the opening race of the evening, the Bani Yas (Gr. II), sponsored by Shadwell Farm, on his third attempt at the race. Trained by Satish Seemar and ridden by Ted Durcan, the consistent seven-year-old made all to win by three and a half lengths. Stable mate Mushaagib was second with the Qatari raider Al Anood in third.

Al Kurdi’s and Durcan’s success continued in the second race when Prince of Demark lead from pillar to post in the Shadayid Stud Stakes for Thoroughbreds over 1,700 metres. The three-year-old was challenged close home by the fast finishing Tamarillo, John Carroll up. Clive Brittain’s Forthright was finishing best of all for fourth beaten only just over two lengths.

Rawyaan, the mount of Richard Hills, gave trainer John Gosden his first winner of the Dubai International Racing Carnival when landing the US$100,000 Aljabr Stakes over 2,400 metres on the turf.

The race was taken into the straight by the Paddy Padmanabhan-trained Classical Act under Mark du Plessis, approaching the 400 metres Rawyaan came wide and ran on to take the lead in the final 50 metres to win by three quarters of a length going away.

Smith’s Kayseri stayed on for second with Classical Act in third and David Loder’s Shami in fourth.

After the race Gosden said, “They have really been looking after us well at the International Stables and it is a highly professional outfit, we could not be more pleased, I think there will be a long line of trainers queuing to get here next year.

“The race was run at a fairly slow and Rawyaan managed to get out of the pocket when he was in the straight and had 400 metres to make his run. He did well and travelled well throughout.

“We will look at another race in the carnival or go straight to the Dubai Sheema Classic on Dubai World Cup night.”

Cat Belling, who has now run in five out of the six Carnival meetings so far, came with a great late run to snatch victory from Godolphin’s Western Diplomat in the fourth race, the US$100,000 Nashwan Stakes over 1,500 metres on the turf.

Cat Belling, under Willie Supple, was always going well with the Frankie Dettori-partnered Western Diplomat setting the pace. As the wire approached Cat Belling was switched out wide and ran on to win by two and a quarter lengths.

Bouresly followed up quickly by landing the fifth race the US$90,000 Erhaab Stud Stakes over the straight 1,200 metres with the Hills-partnered Conceal. As the gates opened the Macau runner Elegance Champion got badly bumped by the Du Plessis-ridden Magic Master, who then went into the lead.

Conceal took the lead from 100 metres out and stayed on to win by just over half a length from the fast finishing Elegance Champion and the McEvoy-partnered Dantana in third.

Godolphin’s Three Graces made all to win the 1,500 metre US$100,000 Swain Stud Stakes under Dettori. One More Round, trained in Ireland by Dermot Weld, came with a challenge but Three Graces had run clear and went on to win by three and a half lengths with Maidaan in third.

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “Three Graces won very well - he was impressive. We will try and find another race for him at the end of the Dubai International Racing Carnival.”

Frankie Dettori added: “He picked the bridle up and took me to the front. He does not show a lot in the morning when training, saving his best for the racetrack - I always had the race under control.

“I was impressed by him and I am sure that there is plenty more to come.”

Mark Johnston landed his first winner in the Dubai International Racing Carnival with Scott’s View and Stanley Chin getting their head in front in the final strides to win the US$100,000 Sahm Stud Stakes over 2,400 metres on the turf.

Fantastic Horse took the field along with the Brittain-trained Dutch Gold taking up the lead in the straight, but he could not hold off the challenge and was a half length second to Scott’s View, with de Kock’s Prince of War in third and Fantastic Horse in fourth.
