NICHOLLS KEEN TO RUN LORD NOELIE IN RED SQUARE VODKA GOLD CUP
Bridget Nicholls today revealed that she is aiming Lord Noelie at Haydock's most valuable jump race, the £120,000 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup on Saturday, February 28.
The 11-year-old is among 36 high-class British and Irish chasers entered for this prestigious extended three and a half mile handicap.
"The Red Square Vodka Gold Cup would be the plan for Lord Noelie if the ground dried up - the next five days are forecast as dry but obviously I can't see any further than that. So if it dries up then we'd very much like to go up to Haydock," said the Somerset-based trainer.
Lord Noelie provided the first-season handler, who assisted former husband Paul Nicholls for nine years and then spent three years with Henrietta Knight, with her first winner at Cheltenham on New Year's Eve.
On that occasion Lord Noelie was given a brilliant ride by champion jockey Tony McCoy, who drove him out on the run-in to get the better of Imperial De Thaix by four lengths.
According to Nicholls, the Lord Americo gelding is in rude health.
"Lord Noelie is terribly well and in good form. We were hoping that we could have taken him to Doncaster for the Sky Bet Chase but unfortunately it obviously got too soft there for him. So we've just backed off and we're picking him up again for the race at Haydock," she explained.
Lord Noelie gained the biggest success of his career when victorious in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in 2000, when proving a length and a quarter too powerful for Alexander Banquet. Nicholls is considering another tilt at the Festival.
"The Red Square Vodka Gold Cup would be Lord Noelie's last race before Cheltenham. After Haydock then we would look at the William Hill Handicap Chase at Cheltenham and then after that the Scottish National [at Ayr] is a possibility," continued
Nicholls.
Joe Tizzard rode Lord Noelie on his first two outings this season before McCoy replaced him in the plate when the 11-year-old gained his first success since his Royal & SunAlliance Chase victory.
"I would love Tony McCoy to ride Lord Noelie at Haydock but I expect he'll be claimed by Martin Pipe," added the trainer.
IRISH THOROUGHBRED NEWS
TITUS LIVIUS SIRES FIRST GROUP 1 WINNER
Sold for Ir£250,000 at Goffs yearling sales, Tiber became the first Group 1 winner for Titius Livius when he won the Gr. 1 Hong Kong Mile at Sha Tin on Sunday. Formally trained by John Gosden for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, his Newlands House Stud bred colt, took the win by ¾ length from the favourite Lucky Owners.
Tiber was winning for the second time for his new trainer John Moore. Moore said, "This horse has great talent and to defeat an international Group 1 winner like Lucky Owners is a big plus." Tiber now heads for another Gr.1, the Hong Kong Derby, which is to be run next month.
GEORGES GIRL GETS OFF THE MARK AT GOWRAN PARK
Drying ground at Haydock Park put paid to the original plan of letting AIG (Europe) Champion Hurdle runner-up Georges Girl take her chance in the Tote Gold Trophy and the Francis Flood-trained mare stayed closer to home to record her first success of the season at Gowran Park on Saturday.
Owned and trained by Glenn Martin, Georges Girl landed the EUR60,000 Grade 2 Red Mills Trial Hurdle and trainer Francis Flood all but ruled out a trip to Cheltenham for his highly consistent mare.
He said, "We do not have any real plans and it is unlikely at this stage that she will go to Cheltenham, but we will have to wait and see before making any definite decision."
Georges Girl led over the final hurdle in the two-mile contest and edged out long-time leader Hardy Eustace who has emerged as a Champion Hurdle prospect.
RATHGAR BEAU TOO STRONG IN RED MILLS CHASE
The Eamonn Sheehy-trained Rathgar Beau scored his fourth success over fences and his seventh in all when taking the EUR37,500 Grade 3 Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park on Saturday.
Running over the two and a half mile trip for the first time, Rathgar Beau was produced by Shay Barry after the final fence to beat the long time leader and favourite Barrow Drive by three quarters of a length.
"The County Hurdle at Cheltenham has always been the plan and that's where he will go next. He will have one more run over hurdles in the meantime."
Commented Sheehy after the race.
WALSH FATHER AND SON COMBINE FOR NAVAN SUCCESS
True Blue Victory was the comfortable winner of the EUR50,000 Grade 2 betfair.com Flyingbolt Novice Chase for Ted and Ruby Walsh at Navan on Sunday.
The eight-year-old arrived full of running to stalk the front running Jim between the final two fences and quickened in fine style from the last to win by two and a half lengths.
The son of Catrail was winning for the third time over fences and scored his seventh career success in the process.
ALL TOO EASY FOR ROSAKER AT NAVAN
With the smart Solerina an absentee, the locally-trained Rosaker never came off the bridle as he won the EUR50,000 McCabe Builders Ltd Boyne Hurdle at Navan on Sunday.
Trained by Noel Meade and ridden by Paul Carberry, Rosaker was sent off at long odds-on and did not disappoint with a winning performance that mirrored his win at Gowran Park last month.
The Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham is now on the agenda and Meade said, "There isn't anything suitable for him in Ireland until the Punchestown Festival and while it is hard to see him winning the Stayers', he'll have no chance if he stays at home."
SHOOTING LIGHT WINS GRADE 2 AON CHASE
The 11-year-old Shooting Light held off the late surge of better fancied rivals Irish Hussar and Keen Leader to win the Grade 2 Aon Chase at Newbury on Saturday.
An Aintree Grand National hope, Shooting Light went clear before the last and held on well to record his biggest win over fences. As far back as 1997, he won at a similar level over hurdles.
The first three horses across the line were all Irish-bred and both Irish Hussar and Keen Leader will be leading contenders for their respective Cheltenham targets in four weeks time.
HAZELHATCH WINS IN DUBAI
The former Dermot Weld trained Hazelhatch was the winner of the Al Rostamani Cup at Nad Al Sheba last Thursday. Having his third run in the UAE this son of Mukaddamah ran out the comfortable winner in the colours of Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, beating the Gerald Butler trained Boston Lodge (Grand Lodge) into second.

However, horses who have contested a bumper in the interim will not be qualified.
