PIPE NOW 10 BEHIND WALWYN’S RECORD AT CHELTENHAM
Following two victories at last year’s National Hunt Festival, the record-breaking Martin Pipe is just 10 victories behind the late Fulke Walwyn in the list of most successful trainers at jump racing’s biggest event.
Walwyn trained 40 Festival winners in a 40-year period between 1946 and 1986 but Pipe moved on to 30 successes after wins for Royal Predica in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase and Liberman in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.
Pipe, who passed Fred Winter’s record of 28 successes last season, is now five winners clear of his nearest current rival Nicky Henderson (25 winners), who surprisingly failed to gain a victory at the 2003 Festival, ending the meeting with three seconds.
Pipe and Henderson are some way clear of their rivals, with Irish-based Edward O’Grady (17 winners) and veteran handler Toby Balding (10 winners) the only other current trainers to have managed double-figure successes at the National Hunt Festival.

Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham’s Managing Director, commented: “There is no more competitive meeting than the National Hunt Festival with every one of the 20 races intensely contested, making the records of trainers such as Martin Pipe, Nicky Henderson and Edward O’Grady outstanding.”
This media information pack contains trainers’ records at the Festival, a feature on Paul Webber bidding for his first success and the announcement of The Daily Telegraph Award for leading trainer at the National Hunt Festival.
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH REWARDS THE BEST AT CHELTENHAM AND AINTREE
The Daily Telegraph is to sponsor the Leading Trainer Award at both the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival and Aintree’s Martell Cognac Grand National Meeting. The paper already sponsors the Leading Rider Award at these meetings.
Both Awards will be decided by the number of winners ridden or trained over the three days, but while Jockeys will have placed horses taken into account in case of a tie, the Trainers Award will be based on prize money won if two or more trainers end up with the same number of winners.
At Cheltenham, as well as trophies for both Awards, The Daily Telegraph will give both the Leading Trainer and the Leading Rider a holiday for two at the Hyatt La Manga Resort in Murcia, Spain, while Guinness will donate a keg to both winning parties.
Mark Dixon, Marketing Director of The Daily Telegraph, commented:
“As a committed supporter of horseracing, we’re delighted to increase our involvement with these two great race meetings, which are extremely popular with existing and potential readers.
“The Daily Telegraph is dedicated to providing the best in racing coverage through its team of top writers and columnists including National Hunt Champion jockey Tony McCoy and trainer Henrietta Knight“
Peter McNeile, Commercial Director of Cheltenham Racecourse commented: "We are very pleased to see The Daily Telegraph extend its awards to the training fraternity at the Festival. Training racehorses is a frustrating experience, and it is an achievement in itself to get a horse to the Festival ready to run, let alone win. This new award will go some way to redressing the balance in recognizing the challenge that faces our foremost trainers and their staff in preparing their equine athletes for the annual Olympics at Cheltenham".
The Daily Telegraph has teamed up with Ladbrokes to offer early betting on The Daily Telegraph leading trainer award. Leading Jockey prices will not be available until jockeys bookings are confirmed.

WEBBER HOPING TO RECORD HIS FIRST FESTIVAL SUCCESS
Since taking over the licence in 1995 at his family’s famous Cropredy Lawn training yard near Banbury, Paul Webber has enjoyed no shortage of success both on the Flat and over jumps but there is one omission in his career to date that he would like to fill above all others - a victory at the National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham.
The 43-year-old’s main hopes for a first Festival success this year rest with Patricksnineteenth, a game winner of the Grade 1 Tote Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown on February 7, who stayed on resolutely to defeat L’Aventure by six lengths.
Prior to his Sandown success, the seven-year-old had run just five times, winning a bumper at the same course in February, 2003, before showing considerable promise on his first two starts over fences when chasing home Mister Banjo at Bangor and Calling Brave at Sandown. The Royal & SunAlliance Chase on Wednesday, March 17, is now very firmly on the agenda.
“If the ground is good to soft, or softer, then we would be looking forward to running Patricksnineteenth in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase,” said Webber.
The trainer is also hoping to have a representative in the other championship novice chase at Cheltenham - the Grade 1 Irish Independent Arkle Trophy on Tuesday, March 16. His representative could be either Atum Re or Tidour.
We also have two horses in the Irish Independent Arkle Trophy - Atum Re and Tidour,” added Webber. “They are long-priced horses but both have good bits of form.
“At the moment, it depends on what the ground is like. They both need a run in the next two weeks before we make any decision regarding Cheltenham. If everything went well on their next outings, one of them would run in the Arkle but they both want different types of ground - Atum Re wants decent going while Tidour wants it soft.
“The novice chases look to be our best shot at this year’s Festival.”
In the 1980/81 season, Webber was champion amateur National Hunt rider while his late father John sent out Elfast to land the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup Handicap Chase in both 1992 and 1994. Understandably, Webber junior is keen to get his name on the Festival roll of honour.
“It’s a big blot on my copybook that I haven’t managed to train a winner at Cheltenham yet,” said Webber. “We’ve managed one at Royal Ascot [Ulundi in the 2002 Wolferton Rated Stakes] but so far Cheltenham has eluded us. Hopefully, that will change this year!”
