HIGH-CLASS 36-STRONG ENTRY FOR RED SQUARE VODKA GOLD CUP

The 2002 Martell Cognac Grand National second What's Up Boys heads the weights, revealed today, for this year's 120,000 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup on 11st 12lb.

The famous 3m 4f 110yds handicap chase takes place at Haydock on Saturday, February 28, and has proved an excellent pointer to the Martell Cognac Grand National, a record that looks set to continue this year with a string of fancied Aintree contenders engaged among the 36 entries.

Bindaree (11st 7lb), the 2002 National winner, showed he has lost none of his ability with a Coral Welsh National success at Chepstow on December 27. His trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, who also has Shardam (11st) entered in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, was successful with Frantic Tan in 2001.

Bear On Board (10st 4lb), winner of his last three starts for Alan King, is rated Britain's best chance of Martelll Cognac Grand National glory by bookmakers with other leading contenders including Jonjo O'Neill's pair Clan Royal (10st 7lb) and Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup second Joss Naylor (11st). O'Neill's Haydock entry is completed by Native Emperor (10st 11lb) and World Wide Web (10st)

Paul Nicholls, successful with Shotgun Willy last year in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, has two possibles in Exit To Wave (10st 7lb) and Fasgo (10st 1lb). The former has been third on two of his three starts this season including last time when five lengths adrift of Over The Storm in a handicap chase at Sandown last month. Fasgo has reaped the benefits of a breathing operation over the summer, finishing in the first two on all four outings this term including a five-length victory on his seasonal bow at Newton Abbot in November.

Tyneandthyneagain (10st 11lb) gave Richard Guest the biggest success in his 11-month training career when winning the Sky Bet Chase at Doncaster on the last day of January by six lengths from Magical Bailiwick (9st 10lb).

Guest has also entered Red Striker (10st 11lb), who won Haydock's Peter Marsh Chase in 2002, and was also six lengths runner-up to Goguenard in the Favourites Racing Handicap Chase at Haydock in March, 2003.

Artic Jack (11st 11lb), trained by Sue Smith, could also represent winning Peter Marsh Chase form. He was successful in that prestigious event in January, staying on well to beat Kingscliff by 13 lengths.

Kingsmark (11st 11lb) and Just In Debt (10st 8lb) could be Martin Todhunter's first runners in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup. Kingsmark has a fine record at Haydock, where he has won three Edward Hanmer Memorial Chases (2000, 2001 and 2002), while Just In Debt, who has yet to run for Todhunter having formerly been under the care of Pat Doyle in Ireland, was third in the Kerry National at Listowel on his last start in September.

Champion trainer Martin Pipe, who won this valuable event in 1998 with Dom Samourai, has nine entries. Stormez (11st 6lb) is ultra-consistent, having been in the first three on 16 of his last 18 starts including when runner-up in both lasts season's Scottish Grand National and attheraces Gold Cup, Jurancon II (10st 10lb) was second to Southern Star in the Tote Classic Chase at Warwick last month, while Akarus (10st 7lb) was second in last year's Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter.

Pipe's contingent is completed by You're Agoodun (10st 12lb), Maximize (10st 4lb), Dark Stranger (10st 3lb), Carryonharry (9st 12lb), Magical Bailiwick and Imperial De Thaix (9st 2lb).

Lord Noelie (11st 5lb), won a handicap chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Eve to give Bridget Nicholls her first training success, while former leading Irish hunter chaser Joe Blake (10st 6lb) beat Tyneandthyneagain on his only start this season in a Wetherby handicap chase on November 27.

The Noel Meade-trained Coq Hardi Diamond (9st 9lb), winner of the Grand National Trial at Punchestown on February 1, and What Odds (10st), trained by Tucker Geraghty, are the two Irish possibles.

Adam Waterworth, Haydock's Managing Director, commented: "We are delighted to have attracted the very best staying handicap chasers for this year's 120,000 Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, which is Haydock's top jump race. The Red Square Vodka Gold Cup is both an extremely important event in its own right and an excellent pointer to the Martell Cognac Grand National."

CLOSING DATE APPROACHING FOR 2004 BHB GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME APPLICATIONS

Just over a fortnight remains before the closing date for the 2004 British Horseracing Board Graduate Development Programme. Those interested in securing one of up to 18 places on this unique and highly acclaimed course must apply by 29th February.

The programme, now in its 14th year, begins with a two-week residential course in July at the British Racing School in Newmarket which includes presentations from senior executives from the racing and betting industries, and visits to the National Stud, Weatherbys, Newmarket Racecourse and other places of interest.

This fortnight is then followed by a paid eight-week placement at one of the sponsoring racing and betting industry organisations, who in 2004 are the British Horseracing Board, Coral, Darley Stud Management Co. Ltd, the Horserace Betting Levy Board, Horse Racing Ireland, the Jockey Club, Letheby and Christopher, the Press Association, the Racecourse Association, Racecourse Holdings Trust, RaceTech, the Racing Post, Tattersalls, the Tote, Weatherbys and William Hill.

The list of sponsors illustrates the breadth of potential career interests covered by the Programme and the very high-profile organisations who greatly value the scheme as a recognised entry point for talented graduates. The success of the Programme is reflected in the significant number of influential racing and betting positions which have been secured by those who have been on the course in the past.

The Programme is aimed at students in their penultimate or final year although applications will be considered from those who have recently completed their degree. In most cases the sponsor company does not mind what degree the applicant is studying as long as there is evidence of high academic achievement.

Applicants, who should have a serious interest in a career in the racing or betting industries, should send a CV (including A Level grades), the names of two referees (one character and one academic) and a full covering letter to BHB Graduate Development Programme, British Horseracing Board, 42 Portman Square, London, W1H 6EN, or by e-mail to gradcourse@bhb.co.uk by the last day of February.

The letter should state, in no more than 500 words, the applicant's interest in racing, the qualities they offer and what they would seek to gain from the Programme. Interviews take place in London, Doncaster and Ireland during April.

VICTORY MOON HEADS AN INTERNATIONAL MAKTOUM CHALLENGE

Victory Moon, the 2003 UAE Derby winner, flies the flag for South Africa in the second round of the 1,800 metre US$ 200,000 Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.III), sponsored by Al Rostamani, at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday evening, one of the many highlights of the inaugural Dubai International Racing Carnival.

The Mike de Kock-trained four-year-old was a fast finishing third in the first round of the Maktoum Challenge and he will appreciate the extra 200 metres on Thursday. State Shinto, trained by Mazin Al Kurdi, picked up the first round of the Maktoum Challenge by a head from the Ali Rashid Al Raihe-trained Tropical Star, the pair meet again on Thursday.

Ed Dunlop saddles his first runner of the Dubai International Racing Carnival with the Jamie Spencer-partnered Anani in the Maktoum Challenge. The son of Miswaki was a half length runner-up last time out in the Group Three Frankfurt Trophy over 2,100 metres.

Saeed bin Suroor and Frankie Dettori team up with Inamorato who defeated Victory Moon by six lengths over this course and distance in the Al Bastikiya last season with a six and a half kilogramme advantage, on Thursday they meet on level weights.

Eddie Ahern partners the Clive Brittain-trained Dutch Gold, winner of the Chester Vase (Gr.III) in May. St Expedit will represent the Rashid Bouresly stable in the race and was a four lengths fourth to D'Anjou on Saturday.

Ayhan Kasar from Turkey runs his Dinyeper, ridden by Halis Karatas, winner of his last three starts in Istanbul, landing the most recent win by four lengths over 2,400 metres.

Kerrin McEvoy has the ride on the Ismail Mohammed-trained Blatant, who was eighth behind State Shinto last time out, but his previous outing was a half length second in the Premio di Vittorio di Capua (Group I) in Milan.

Mark Johnston runs West Country, the mount of Stanley Chin, in the second race - the Al Rostamani Trophy three-year-old maiden over 1,600 metres. West Country was fourth on his Nad Al Sheba debut and will have come on for the run. The Gone West colt faces five challengers including the Al Kurdi-trained Slane Hill, Ted Durcan in the saddle, who was a short head second at Jebel Ali over 1,200 metres in December.

Satish Seemar runs two debutants the Gary Hind-ridden Houbara, a son of Octagonal, and Manunited.

India-based trainer Sadakshara Padmanabhan runs Classical Act in the 1,600 metre Al Rostamani Stakes. Padmanabhan has sent two horses to Dubai for the Carnival but due quarantine regulations the pair had to travel to Dubai via a four week stopover in the USA.

Classical Act, the mount of championship leader Richard Mullen, has won five of his ten starts including the Indian St Leger at Bangalore.

Gerard Butler will be represented by Self Evident, the mount of Ahern, with Manuel Santos riding top Swedish filly Halfsong.

John Oxx, who enjoyed his first win in the Emirates last Saturday with D'Anjou, runs Legacy, Pat Smullen partners the son of Carnegie who finished seventh behind Crimson Palace on his first Nad Al Sheba outing.

David Loder's Royal Dignitary should have come on from his first Dubai outing at the opening meeting of the Carnival, where he finished third behind Bold Demand

De Kock's National Icon, will prefer the switch to turf when he runs in the fourth race of the evening, the Al Rostamani Cup over 1,300 metres. The son of National Emblem finished sixth behind San Salvador at the Dubai International Racing Carnival opening meeting, and may have not suited the dirt.

Adrian McGuiness runs Jack's Estate, who is another who will prefer to be back on the turf as he appeared not to handle the dirt when finishing eighth behind San Salvador. Boston Lodge will be Butler's representative in this race and was a decent third over 1,600 metres on the dirt two
weeks ago.

Mick Channon's Fruit of Glory makes his Nad Al Sheba debut and has some useful place form back in England, Ryan Moore has the ride. Channon is also running the Ted Durcan-partnered Pic Up Sticks, a five-year-old son of Piccolo. Another with decent form coming into this race is the Malcolm Thwaites-trained Storm Racer, the mount of Mark du Plessis.

Butler's Compton Bolter arrives in Dubai fresh from a win in the Listed Churchill Stakes at Lingfield, and should be ready for his run in the final race of the evening, the Al Rostamani Plate over 2,000 metres.

Butler also runs Camelot, owned by the International Carnival Partnership, a sixth behind Grand Stand a week ago over 1,600 metres.

Padmanabhan runs his other challenger, Zurbaran, a winner of his last two starts and winner of nine of his 16 outings including the St Leger and Maharaja's Cup.

Dunlop's second runner of the evening is Swift Tango, a winner on the all weather track at Lingfield at the end of January over Thursday's trip.

Agrab Al Nas, trained by James Frazier Jr, heads the runners for the opening race of the evening, the Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Challenge round two for Purebred Arabians. Also in the field is last year's Kahayla Classic winner Bopp Moon and the winner of the first round of the Maktoum Challenge Velte.
