The weights for the 2003 Martell Cognac Grand National, worth a record £600,000 and run at Aintree, England, at 3.45pm on Saturday, April 5, are announced today, Tuesday, February 4.

Irish challenger Florida Pearl and Marlborough, trained by Nicky Henderson, share the top-weight of 11st 12lb and the British Horseracing Board's senior National Hunt handicapper Phil Smith has used his discretion to allocate 67 horses 10st or more.

The weights for the record 149 entries in the world's most famous jump race go down to 8st 4lb. The maximum field that can line up on April 5 is 40 horses and they have to negotiate 30 fences.

TRAINERS' REACTION TO NATIONAL WEIGHTS

FRANCOIS DOUMEN: (First Gold 11-6, Djeddah 9-13):

"At this stage I'm concentrating on getting First Gold to the Cheltenham Gold Cup. There is no decision at the moment for the Grand National. He has always been aimed at the Gold Cup and that is where he's going to run. I've decided that he will run at Wincanton next Saturday week.

"I'm very happy with the horse at this stage and I'll not commit my self for the Grand National. He is not too badly treated in the National I can't complain.

"Djeddah - we could call it an ideal situation. He is practically in the handicap but the horse needs to prove himself now he's turned 12. I'm going to run him in the next two weeks. I'm definitely trying to get him to the Grand National again. He has always preferred good ground. Last year he was going very well when he was brought down."

RICHARD GUEST assistant to NORMAN MASON (Red Marauder 10-6, Red Striker 10-6, Red Ark 9-12, Mr Bossman 8-4)

"I'm delighted with those weights - they are spot on. All we need to do now is stay healthy and keep in one piece and get soft ground. We've got the weight where we want it. We are ideally handicapped.

"The two brothers want soft (Red Marauder and Red Striker), Red Ark if he gets in wants good ground.

"The Racing Post Chase next for Red Striker and then the National. Red Marauder, if the meeting is on, will run a week on Saturday at Newcastle in a two and a half mile chase. He'll have one run and then go for the National. Red Ark will probably run at Sandown a week Friday and he may have another run before Sandown because he's not sure to get in.

"We are very happy in the Mason camp."

DESSIE HUGHES (Rathbawn Prince 10-5, Delgany Royal 9-2):

"We'd love to run them if we got them in. Rathbawn should get in but the other one might struggle.

"Rathbawn hasn't run for a while in fact he fell last time down in Cork but he is a good jumper. He'll have two runs before Aintree. He could possibly run him at the Cheltenham Festival. Kieran Kelly will ride Rathbawn Prince.

"Delgany Royal will run if he gets in."

JAMES MANGAN: (Monty's Pass 10-5):

"I thought he might have been on 10-7 so I'm happy enough.

"He's been doing well. He's had a winter's break and he's been back in since Christmas - just riding out - so we'll be stepping up his work

"He may just have a run in a novice hurdler or two before the big race.

"Aintree is the big target. He was second in the Topham.

"Barry Geraghty rides him usually and I hope Barry will stick with him."

TONY MARTIN (Davids Lad 10-13 and It's Himself 9-7):

"Davids Lad carried more than that last year (11-1) and he was going well until he came down (four out).

"He's in good order and I'd be happy enough with him and hopefully that's where we'll head with him. We'll just try and get a couple of runs into him.

"He'll have to have good ground - there's no point going there if it was very soft. Yielding and soft ground he'd get away with it but not heavy.

"Hopefully Timmy (Murphy) will be available he won the Irish National on him.

"We'll play it by ear with It's Himself and see what he does in the meantime. He's getting on in years. He'd love a slog like it was a couple of years ago when there were only two finishers. Fences like that might bring the best out in him - make him pay attention."

GINGER McCAIN (Amberleigh House 10-2, Ackzo 9-4, Lambrini Gold 8-4)

"It's spot on, exact actually - it's amazing what the threat of castration can do to a handicapper! It's perfect and I'm delighted.

"It was always at the back of your mind last year that he was just struggling a bit (to get in). I was quite confident early on that we would get in and then you start to lose your bottle and then we didn't.

"But we're 49th this year and it's nearly a certainty that 10 or 15 of those are going to come out at least.

"I am well, well pleased and we just need to get there fit and well. He's a tough little horse and we'll certainly go with a very good chance. No question.

"He's a proven Liverpool horse, he's been there four times and he's never put a foot wrong - I know he was brought down in the first one but that wasn't his fault in any way, shape or form.

"He's in over hurdles at Bangor on Friday in a two-miler so he'll possibly run there and then it will be one chase although I don't know where that would be at the moment, and then Liverpool.

"He's sparkling at the moment but we've obviously left a fair bit to work on. He's an easy horse to train. He's a bouncy little horse and tough.

"Unless it's a bog of ground or something like that I'd expect him, given luck in running, to run a big race.

"I think Warren Marston will ride one of Sue Smith's but we could possibly go for Tony Dobbin, obviously it will depend if Nicky Richards' (Lord Jack) horse gets in, he'd be very keen to ride him and he rode him very well in the Becher Chase.

"Ackzo is going to be struggling to get in so he'll go for the Midlands National or perhaps even the Whitbread (attheraces Gold Cup).

"Lambrini Gold's not going to get in."

NOEL MEADE (The Bunny Boiler 10-8, Coq Hardi Diamond 8-10 and Sigma Dotcom 8-9)

"It sounds like he (The Bunny Boiler) has plenty (of weight), it seems to be well above his rating I would have thought.

"Obviously I'll need to sit down and look at it but he seems to have plenty.

"He ran disappointingly the other day but some of ours haven't run a bit disappointingly over the last couple of weeks.

"But the plan is he to run in the National and he probably wouldn't have a run beforehand I wouldn't think. He does come out and run well fresh so I would think he'd go straight there.

"I don't know what the plan would be at this stage with the other two - I suppose they probably wouldn't get in anyway, it's very unlikely."

MOUSE MORRIS (Foxchapel King 11-8):

"That's plenty of weight but we'll be tempted all right. I'll talk to the owners but I think it's the race for him. I just think he's a National horse - I wouldn't mind riding him anyhow.

"He'll probably run in the William Hill at The Cheltenham Festival first. He's been running great this year and doesn't owe us anything. I'd say he'd be up to it."

PAT MURPHY (Supreme Glory 10-0)

"I'm happy with that, the fact that he's about number 65 isn't such a happy mark to be on but I suppose at this stage of the game you'd settle for just being in the handicap.

"It's absolutely incredible when you think back over the years when we've had nine or 10 horses in the handicap, I think looking at it Phil Smith has done a fairly good job in compressing this race and giving the horses at the top a real incentive to run - the one that jumps out at you is Chives.

"All I've got to hope is that enough come out for me to get in it at this stage. He'll be entered in the Scottish National a week later as a fallback but it's all systems go towards Aintree and I just hope we get there.

"He may run at Newbury on Saturday to have a run and then Haydock in the Red Square Vodka Gold Cup, and then on to Aintree.

"I just hope that we can run him on some better ground, he doesn't handle heavy ground. He wants good. good to soft and I just hope we can get a couple of runs into him on that sort of ground, that's the important thing."

BARRY SIMPSON, racing manager to SIR ROBERT OGDEN: (Marlborough 11-12, Kingsmark 11-9, Fadalko 11-5, Ad Hoc 10-13, Halexy 9-8):

"All five are intended runners. Sir Robert is very keen to support the race.

"I expected Marlborough to be top weight, rated 168. I'm disappointed that Kingsmark is as close as he is to Marlborough. You have to strike a balance somewhere between official ratings and the Aintree factor.

"My initial reaction is Ad Hoc has 5lb more than I expected and he is only getting 6lb from Fadalko, who is rated 161.

"Halexy looks as though he might not get in the race."

SUE SMITH (Ardent Scout 10-2, Goguenard 10-0):

"I'm very happy with Ardent Scout's weight. He ran well the other day (second to Mini Sensation at Uttoxeter).

"Goguenard's 10st is superb. That suits us down to the ground - we couldn't have a lot better than that.

"All being well the jockeys will be Dominic Elsworth (Ardent Scout) and Warren Marston (Goguenard). Ardent Scout will perhaps have one more run and with Goguenard we'll just play it by ear and see how we go with him."

TED WALSH: (Rince Ri 11-7, Papillon 10-11):

"The National would be Papillon's prime target but he hasn't run since last year and he might not come back to himself and he might never run again. We'll just have to see how he is. He'd be a hopeful rather than a possible or probable.

"Rince Ri runs in the Hennessy on Sunday. Unless he could win or go close on Sunday he'd probably go for the National. The National would always look the kind of race that would suit him."

WESSEX RACING FESTIVAL IS WINCANTON'S BIGGEST EVER DAY

Wincanton racecourse is all set the greatest day in its history, with the WESSEX RACING FESTIVAL on Saturday, February 15.

The Wessex Racing Festival offers a superb seven-race programme of top-quality National Hunt action and prize money of £152,000, as against £97,500 last year, a rise of over 50%.

A wide array of trade stands will be at the course as well as the exciting Grand National simulator, which gives people a chance to experience the thrills and spills of riding over the famous Aintree fences.

Topping the bill are the £40,000 (£25,000 last year) Listed COUNTRY GENTLEMEN'S ASSOCIATION CHASE (2.10pm) and the £50,000 (£35,000 last year) Grade Two AXMINSTER KINGWELL HURDLE (2.45pm).

The Country Gentlemen's Association Chase has proved to be a highly-informative trial for the Blue Riband of chasing, the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, as well as providing a thrilling spectacle in its own right. Last year's victor See More Business, winner of the 1999 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, went on to finish a fine third at Cheltenham while the 2001 victor Marlborough was subsequently triumphant in the Grade One Tote Gold Trophy Chase at Sandown (the substitute for that year's Cheltenham Gold Cup which was cancelled due to foot and mouth disease). Double Thriller, the winner in 1999, finished fourth at Cheltenham while the 1998 victor Go Ballistic was subsequently runner-up in both the 1999 Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grade One Tote Gold Trophy Chase at Sandown at in 2001.

Barry Simpson, racing manager to See More Business's joint-owner Sir Robert Ogden, recently revealed that the 13-year-old would probably attempt a repeat win in this year's Country Gentlemen's Association Chase, while his stable companion Valley Henry could also join him. Another possible for the race is Francois Doumen's First Gold, the French-trained winner of the 2000 King George VI Chase at Kempton.

Equally impressive is the roll of honour for the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle. In 2002 Hors La Loi III was triumphant at Wincanton before going on to lift hurdling's top prize - the Smurfit Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham - the following month. The same horse was triumphant in the 2000 Axminster Kingwell Hurdle and only found the mighty Istabraq too good at Cheltenham that year. Hors La Loi III's trainer James Fanshawe has said that the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle is on the agenda once again this year. I'm Supposin took the 1998 renewal prior to finishing an excellent third to Istabraq in the Champion Hurdle that year. In 1995 Alderbrook was another horse to complete the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle/Champion Hurdle double.

The Wincanton/Cheltenham double has been achieved over the years by such great names as Bula, who captured both races in 1971 and 1972, Lanzarote in 1974 and also Kribensis in 1990.

Hors La Loi III could be joined in the 2003 Axminster Kingwell Hurdle by Paul Nicholls' exciting prospect Thisthatandtother, who was an impressive winner of the Grade One Tote Tolworth Hurdle at Wincanton on his latest appearance on January 18. Other possibles are Jonjo O'Neill's talented pair of hurdlers, Intersky Falcon, who is the favourite for this year's Champion Hurdle, and Rhinestone Cowboy, who put up another impressive performance on Saturday at Wetherby.

Opening the Wessex Racing Festival is the £25,000-added TOTE EXACTA HANDICAP HURDLE (1.40pm), over two miles and six furlongs. This valuable handicap and competitive handicap was won in 2002 by the Paul Nicholls-trained Iverain, who landed a novice chase at Wincanton earlier this season. The next two races on the programme are the Country Gentlemen's Association Chase and the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle. These first three races will be broadcast live on Channel 4.

Race four of the day is the £15,000-added ILCHESTER HANDICAP CHASE (3.20pm) over two miles and five furlongs, followed by the £12,000-added GEORGIE NEWALL NOVICES' CHASE (3.55pm) over two miles. Ten years ago Viking Flagship triumphed in the Georgie Newall Novices' Chase and went on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham in 1994 and 1995. Paul Nicholls' exciting chasing prospect Azertyuiop will hopefully run in this race ahead of the Irish Independent Arkle Chase at Cheltenham.

The fifth race of the day is the £7,000-added WESTERN DAILY PRESS NOVICES' HURDLE (4.30pm), won by Nicky Henderson's high-class performer Landing Light in 2000, over two miles.

The Wessex Racing Festival closes with the £3,000-added DOVE AT CORTON TBA "BRITISH BRED" STANDARD NATIONAL HUNT FLAT RACE (5.05pm) over two miles. This race is restricted to four, five and six-year-olds who were bred in Britain.

Stephen Higgins, racecourse manager at Wincanton commented: "The Racing In Wessex Festival is truly the highlight of the season at Wincanton and offers some of the finest National Hunt racing to be found anywhere.

"Our feature races, the Country Gentlemen's Association Chase and the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle, have proved to be two of the best trials for the Cheltenham Festival championships and we anticipate highly-informative contests again this year.

"This is sure to be a popular day, being on a Saturday for the first time."

Admission charges for the Wessex Racing Festival are Club Enclosure £17 (17-25s with ID £12), Tattersalls Enclosure £12 (17-25s with ID £10), Course Enclosure £6 and cars parked in the Course Enclosure £6. Other parking is FREE. Children aged 16 and under, accompanied by a responsible adult, gain FREE admission to all enclosures.

There are lots of facilities at Wincanton to help ensure that racegoers are able to thoroughly enjoy their afternoon at the racecourse. Wincanton offers snack bars in every enclosure and a choice of seven public bars, including the "See More Business" bar, which also offers seafood, in the Club Enclosure.

The excellent restaurant overlooking the paddock needs to be booked in advance by contacting the racecourse. The indoor viewing gallery with seats, opposite the winning post in the Club Enclosure, provides good viewing in a warm environment and has a bar and snack bar.

Before Saturday, February 15, Wincanton races on Thursday, February 6, and then has another fixture on Thursday, March 6.

CHELTENHAM HONOURS THE QUEEN MOTHER

A bronze statue of the Queen Mother is to be unveiled at Cheltenham Racecourse by Her Majesty the Queen on Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup Day, Thursday, March 13.

The statue is a head study by the world-renowned sculptor Angela Conner, commissioned by her patron, the Duke of Devonshire. The statue will be unveiled in the winners' enclosure before racing and will be displayed permanently in a location close to the Royal Box.

The Queen Mother regularly attended the Cheltenham Festival , which hosts the race named in her honour, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, on the Wednesday of the meeting. It was announced last week that the Queen will be attending the Cheltenham Festival this year for the first time since 1951.

Making this announcement, Cheltenham's Managing Director, Edward Gillespie, said: "Following the death of the Queen Mother in April, we invited people to suggest how best they would like Cheltenham to remember her. Far and away the most popular idea was for there to be a statue and we are enormously grateful to the Duke of Devonshire for allowing Angela Conner to work on this project.

"Anyone who has visited Chatsworth, home of the Duke, will be aware of her wonderful talent and it is a great honour for Cheltenham to be able to display this bronze.

"We shall be paying tribute to the Queen Mother in many ways on the Wednesday and look forward to welcoming Her Majesty the Queen to unveil the statue on the Thursday."
