NEWS AND QUOTES FROM MEDIA DAY AT CHRISTIAN VON DER RECKE'S STABLE IN GERMANY
Trainer Christian von der Recke today worked his Cheltenham Festival hopes Moneytrain and Barito at his stable outside Cologne in Germany, although both horses are for sale.
Moneytrain, winner of the Grade Two Wragge & Co Finesse Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham last month, has been the subject of several offers and von der Recke believes that the horse is certain to race in new ownership in next month's JCB Triumph Hurdle (March 13).
"He's improved and come on a lot since Cheltenham," said von der Recke.
"He's had four runs over hurdles, time-wise it has been ideal and he has won a Grade Two over the course. The JCB Triumph Hurdle is an open race but there is no reason why he shouldn't have a good chance. We sold Saitensohn for £150,000 and I'd say we definitely don't want less than that for Moneytrain."
Moneytrain is currently owned by the wife of Liverpool footballer Dietmar Hamann but von der Recke admitted: "I have never actually spoken to him and he would not be able to make Cheltenham, so that is another reason to sell the horse.
"If we have the decision on Moneytrain, Robert Thornton, who won on him in January, will keep the ride although we haven't spoken about it. I don't like to jock them off when they've won on a horse."
Von der Recke could also be represented by Double Fun, who finished second in a juvenile hurdle at Ascot in November, in the JCB Triumph Hurdle. He said: "It's 50-50 whether he runs - if he is bucking and kicking I will send him to Cheltenham."
The handler plans to saddle Barito in the Cathcart Challenge Cup. Barito was successful on his last start in Britain when landing a novice chase at Plumpton in January while last season, when trained by Francois Doumen in France, he took a novice hurdle at Kempton.
"He'll definitely come over for the Festival and there's a bit of interest in him, although he's not as hot as Moneytrain. He's a solid, sound horse and is for sale for £75,000, a price that includes the bonus of having a runner at Cheltenham. He's a bit short of class but is a really good jumper which will help him.
"I try and sell the ice cream in the summer and not in the winter. It looks like I'll have only runners on the Thursday of Cheltenham and they will travel over on the Wednesday. Cheltenham is the home of racing and has a great atmosphere.
"Manfred Hofer, who has ridden over 1,000 winners around the world and has ridden in the Dubai World Cup, the Japan Cup and in Canada, said he has never seen anything like Cheltenham."
Von der Recke was speaking at a media open day organised by Cheltenham Racecourse on Wednesday, February 26, 2003. The trainer has been based at his current 40-hectare establishment since 1996. Out of his 100 horses in training, five are jumpers.
Edward Gillespie, Managing Director of Cheltenham Racecourse, said: "Christian is adding a further dimension to the anticipation for this year's Festival, and with his already outstanding strike rate, he knows as well as anybody what it takes to be successful."
,b>Christian von der Recke Background Information
Christian von der Recke's record of 10 victories and six seconds from just 24 runs over jumps in Britain this season - a winning strike rate of 41% - make his horses formidable opposition.
It has not always been like this for the 42-year-old Cologne-based trainer. From the day in 1996 when Reveillon, his first runner in Britain, unshipped his rider in a Sandown novices' hurdle, von der Recke had to wait until January 24, 2002, to enter a British winner's enclosure.
Multiple German champion jump jockey Peter Gehm partnered Eluna to victory in a juvenile novices' hurdle at Warwick that memorable day.
Von der Recke, who is officially a Freiherr, which is roughly equivalent to Baron, was born into a racing background - both his father and grandfather were celebrated amateur jockeys - and he rode 13 winners, 11 of them on the Flat, as an amateur.
He then set about attaining a firmer footing in the sport, first taking up an apprenticeship at Rottgen, one of Germany's top studs and racing stables, before spending time in England with David Morley and Alan Jarvis as a pupil-assistant in 1982. The trainer also worked for Liam Browne in Ireland, prior to travelling home to become assistant for four seasons to Sven von Mitzlaff in Cologne.
He has fond memories of his time in England and Ireland. "It was a very good experience - first of all to learn the language and then working with decent people. While you can't compare everything - for example they worked the horses uphill and we haven't got a hill - but that is not the main point - it was to get into the mind how people who train racehorses think," he enthused.
"I was so involved at Liam Browne's that I was living as part of the family. If you do that, you get the plans of what he wants to do with all the horses. If you have a good trainer, he is always too busy in the yard but once you are a bit closer to him you have more time to ask him silly questions!"
The decision to go it alone in 1991 saw von der Recke begin with two family-owned horses, but the duo of jumpers were good enough to win a lot of races, making him the leading owner over jumps in Germany that year.
This strong beginning allowed von der Recke to soon become his country's top jump trainer and the dual-purpose handler has been champion jump trainer for the past nine seasons, winning around a third of all contests since 1994.
With only about 75 races over obstacles in Germany last season, the size of the winter game is not big enough to allow a trainer to make a living from it and he began training Flat horses in 1997.
Von der Recke can never be accused of being parochial in his thinking. During 2001 he saddled horses in 12 nations and, in addition to his successful raids in Britain, he has won races in 10 other countries - Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden.
The vast majority (95%) of the 100-strong string at his Weilerswist yard race on the Flat, a sphere in which von der Recke has also enjoyed plenty of success.
Denaro provided him with his first Group winner in 2001, proving too strong for the eight-strong opposition in a Group Two event at Cologne. Other notable victories on the level include the Piast - Wielka Warszawska, Poland's richest event, with Vishnu in 1999, and the Gran Premio Dia de Andalucia, Europe's most valuable contest on dirt, with Montalban at Mijas, Spain, last year.
Von der Recke had been set to have his third National Hunt Festival runner last year, courtesy of Eluna, but she was purchased by John Poynton shortly beforehand and finished 16th in the JCB Triumph Hurdle for trainer Ian Williams.
The same race provided him with his first Cheltenham Festival participant when Reveillon was ninth to Paddy's Return in the 1996 renewal. He then saddled San Suru to be 17th behind subsequent Smurfit Champion Hurdle winner Hors La Loi III in the Gerrard Wealth Management Supreme Novices' Hurdle three years later.
Moneytrain, running in the colours of Tina Hamann, the wife of Liverpool footballer Dietmar, was sent out by von der Recke to become the first German-trained winner to triumph at Cheltenham when taking the Grade Two Wragge & Co Finesse Juvenile Novices' Hurdle on January 25 this year.
While von der Recke considers himself to be the equine equivalent of a bank manager, advising his owners when to sell their horses at a good price, perhaps the soccer star's wealth will prevent prospective buyers taking the four-year-old to alternative stables.
This would give the trainer the opportunity to gain first success at the Cheltenham Festival, jump racing's greatest three days, which take place on March 11, 12 and 13.
-421 Moneytrain (Ger) 4 br g Platini - Miss Esther (Alkalde)
Trainer: Christian von der Recke, Germany; Owner: Tina Hamann
A winner on the Flat over an extended 10 furlongs at Mulheim in October, Moneytrain runs in the colours of Tina Hamann, the wife of Liverpool midfielder Dietmar. He holds an entry in this year's JCB Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham's National Hunt Festival on March 13.
Explaining how he came to train the horse, Christian von der Recke said: "Manfred Hofer [the Hamanns' racing manager] looks after Moneytrain and Dietmar Hamann has got his Flat horses with Ralf Suerland. Once they decided to train Moneytrain over hurdles, it was automatic that I got the horse. There is no problem with the other trainer as he doesn't train jumpers."
Despite being extremely pleased to train for the Hamanns, the trainer revealed that he has never actually met them.
"I think Manfred and Dietmar met each other and I know that Dietmar already had parts in Belenus when he won the German Derby [in 1999 in the colours of the Turf Syndikat 99] but I don't even know which was his first horse," explained von der Recke. "To be quite honest with you, I haven't even spoken to Dietmar Hamann yet."
A son of Platini, which seems appropriate for a horse owned by a footballer, Moneytrain made his jumping debut in a two-mile juvenile novices' hurdle at Haydock in November, when he was unable to justify favouritism though running promisingly to be fourth behind Silver Buzzard.
The following month von der Recke saddled Moneytrain in a similar event at Leicester, where he found just Lewis Island too good, with 20 lengths back to the third Bodfari Rose.
The trainer believes Moneytrain was defeated by the heavy going which he encountered then.
"He wasn't beaten at Leicester by a better horse - he was just beaten by running on the wrong side of the course," he commented.
"The decision by the jockey [John Kavanagh] was to use the inside and the other one [Carl Llewellyn] used the outside, which was much better ground, so the winner ran away from us. If it had been the other way around, the form would have looked a lot better and I can't blame the horse for that defeat."
Moneytrain was stepped up in class on his most recent start in the Grade Two Wragge & Co Finesse Juvenile Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham on January 25, and did not let connections or a German television crew down.
Von der Recke explained: "Before Moneytrain ran at Cheltenham, I had got a German TV crew saying that they needed one more horse to film on the way to the Festival. I said film Moneytrain and they replied, "No, no we want to go with Saitensohn [subsequently sold to an American owner and now trained by Jonjo O'Neill] when he runs at Sandown. I said no, go with Moneytrain as I was so confident."
The four-year-old powered up the famous Cheltenham hill, staying on strongly under a great ride from Robert Chocolate' Thornton to beat Don Fernando by one and a half lengths.
Moneytrain's victory will go in racing history as it was the first time that a German-trained horse had prevailed at Prestbury Park.
Immediately after that historic win, von der Recke revealed that his charge was definitely on the market if the right offer came along.
He explained: "The Hamanns are very keen to run at Cheltenham but, on the other hand, they are keen to take an offer for Moneytrain it comes up," said the trainer on Monday.
"It's a bit of both. I think that I am expecting Moneytrain to be sold to someone else before he runs at Cheltenham."
If von der Recke can keep control of Moneytrain, then it would be no surprise to see the four-year-old create a new record by becoming the first German-trained horse to score at the Cheltenham Festival.
"We always had the plan to run at Cheltenham [in January] and then keep him fresh for the Festival. He's definitely improved a bit since then," he added.
-421 Barito (Ger) b g Winged Love - Blumme (Jadar)
Trainer: Christian von der Recke, Germany; Owner: Gestut Karlshof
The six-year-old Barito is a possible for the Cathcart Challenge Cup Chase at the National Hunt Festival on March 13, having also entered the record books by becoming the first German-trained horse to win a chase in Britain when he beat Kock De La Vesvre by six lengths in a novices' event at Plumpton last month.
Barito had previously finished runner-up to Monte Cristo in a similar event at the same venue in November.
Just under a year earlier, he had won a novices' hurdle at Kempton for French trainer Francois Doumen on his British debut.
WEIGHTING IS OVER FOR FESTIVAL HANDICAPS
Ante-post betting looks sure to reach full swing from today onwards following the publication of the weights for the seven great handicaps run at Cheltenham's National Hunt Festival on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, March 11, 12 & 13.
The seven handicaps - the William Hill National Hunt Handicap Chase, Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase, Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle), Coral Cup (Handicap Hurdle), Mildmay of Flete Handicap Chase, Grand Annual Handicap Chase and Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle - are always among the most fiercely-contested events of the whole jump season.
Martin Pipe has 91 entries in these handicaps but unusually supplies only one of the top weights this year, Lady Cricket (11st 12lb) in the £75,000 Mildmay of Flete.
The top weights are as follows:
WILLIAM HILL NATIONAL HUNT HANDICAP CHASE 12-02 FOXCHAPEL KING
FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR HANDICAP CHASE 11-12 RED STRIKER, RED MARAUDER & KATARINO
PERTEMPS SERIES FINAL (HANDICAP HURDLE) 11-12 IRIS'S GIFT
CORAL CUP (HANDICAP HURDLE) 11-12 SACUNDAI
MILDMAY OF FLETE HANDICAP CHASE 11-12 LADY CRICKET
GRAND ANNUAL HANDICAP CHASE 12-08 KADARANN
VINCENT O'BRIEN COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE 11-12 SANTENAY
La Landiere, winner of Saturday's Racing Post Chase at Kempton - her sixth consecutive victory, has been raised 8lb for that success with her new rating being 155.
The much-improved eight-year-old mare, who could be supplemented for the £350,000 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup - the Festival's highlight, is third in the weights on 11st 10lb for the £80,000 William Hill National Hunt Handicap Chase, with Foxchapel King on 12st 2lb and Foly Pleasant on 11st 13lb.
It is a similar story in the Mildmay of Flete, the other Festival handicap that La Landiere holds an entry for, with the Richard Phillips-trained chaser being third in the weights on 11st 3lb, following on from the Pipe-trained pair of Lady Cricket and Cyfor Malta (11st 11lb).
Stable companions Red Striker and Red Marauder, the 2001 Martell Cognac Grand National winner who made a promising comeback over hurdles on Monday, share top weight in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase with Katarino on 11st 12lb.
Trainer Jonjo O'Neill is responsible for three of the four highest weights in the £60,000 Pertemps Final, with Iris's Gift leading the way on 11st 12lb, followed by Native Emperor on 11st 10lb and Sudden Shock on 11st 9lb. Pipe's Tucacus has been allocated 11st 10lb.
In the £75,000 Coral Cup, it is Irish trainer Edward O'Grady who keeps Pipe's Upgrade (11st 7lb) off the top spot with Sacundai (11st 12lb), while he is also responsible for Over The Bar (11st 7lb).
The Paul Nicholls-trained Kadarann, a probably contender for the Queen Mother Champion Chase on the middle day of the Festival, has a stone more than any of his rivals in the £75,000 Grand Annual Handicap Chase, with 12st 8lb as against Eskleybrook on 11st 8lb.
The concluding race of the 2003 National Hunt Festival, the £65,000 Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle, has another of Nicholls' horses as top weight, Santenay (11st 12lb), who is being aimed for the Smurfit Champion Hurdle on the opening day of the Festival.
