PUNTERS PLUNGE ON KORELO FOR CORAL CUP

Coral today reported the biggest ante post gamble yet on this year's Cheltenham Festival after some of their biggest hitters piled on Korelo for next month's Coral Cup.

Korelo had only yesterday been installed as Coral's 10-1 favourite for their Festival race but just after 11am this morning a host of Coral's shrewder punters began to back it over the phones, in the shops and on the internet.

Coral first cut the horse to 8-1, before cutting it again to 6-1 shortly afterwards as the bets continued to mount up. At lunchtime Coral were forced to go 5-1 in the face of continued support.

"This is the biggest Cheltenham gamble so far but we still don't know what caused it. It was not a major telephone tipping line and as far as we know the connections of the horse are not involved", said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.

"One thing is for sure. These punters would not be smashing into a 10-1 chance for the most competitive Cheltenham Handicap before the weights have even been published unless they had a very good reason", added Clare.

In other market moves, Maximize is 10-1 from 12-1 for the Racing Post Chase. Another Raleagh is 12-1 from 20-1 and Zafarabad is 16-1 from 25-1 for the same race.

Kingscliff is 7-2 from 5-1 for the Foxhunters after continued support and Marble Arch was trimmed to 14-1 from 16-1 for the Champion Hurdle after winning on the all weather at Lingfield Park.

Baci In Front was also trimmed to 4-1 favouritism from 5-1 for the Supreme Novices Hurdle after winning at Limerick today.

PULAU TIOMAN TO MAKE SEASONAL DEBUT IN FREEPHONE STANLEY LINCOLN

Trainer Michael Jarvis today reported that the recently-gelded Pulau Tioman is likely to make his seasonal bow in the £100,000 Freephone Stanley Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday, March 22. The seven-year-old, who has 8st 12lb in the first major Flat race of 2003, is currently priced at 33/1 with the sponsors.

Jarvis said: "If Pulau Tioman comes through his preparation alright, he will probably run in the Lincoln - he ran in the race a couple of years ago when he was fifth [to Nimello in 2001]. He has been gelded in the winter and he might be a bit behind still but if he comes to hand and we are happy with him, he'll take his chance."

Pulau Tioman was a revelation in 2001 winning a conditions event at Kempton followed by the Group Three Vodafone Diomed Stakes at Epsom, but fared less well last season when unplaced in five outings. However, Jarvis is hoping that his recent operation will assist the horse in regaining his old form.

The trainer continued: "Pulau Tioman had a very good year two seasons ago when he won the Diomed and ran some good races and consequently went up a long way in the handicap. He had a poor season last year and seemed to lose a little bit of confidence.

"We've cut him and hopefully it will sweeten him up and his attitude will be a little bit better this year. He definitely did lose some enthusiasm last back end and with him being gelded and the good break that he's had now, hopefully we've rekindled it."

Pulau Tioman has won on both soft and good to firm ground and when Jarvis was asked if he acted on all surfaces, he replied: "Pretty well. He just prefers getting his toe in a bit and he's less effective on very firm ground."

Malton-based John Quinn is also hoping to be represented in the Freephone Stanley Lincoln with Captain Venti, although a maximum of 24 runners in this valuable mile contest may mean that the four-year-old, who is on a mark of 7st 11lb, will have to line-up in the Freephone Stanley Spring Mile, the race for those ballotted out of the main event, run the day before, Friday, March 21.

"We would hope that Captain Venti will run in the Lincoln, but obviously off a mark of 83 he may not get in," said Quinn. "If that happened, we would run him in the Spring Mile."

Captain Venti is a 33/1 chance with Stanley for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln. Last season he was successful on three occasions, including in a mile handicap at Town Moor in June when he dead-heated with Style Dancer. The four-year-old has had 22 career outings, winning five times and being placed on a further four occasions.

All three of his victories in 2002 came over a mile although the first was on soft ground at Haydock while the Doncaster success came on a good to firm surface.

"Captain Venti is in very good form and will probably go straight to Doncaster," continued Quinn. "He goes on every ground and is one of those tough and genuine horses.

"He seems fairly effective over a mile and while I can't say that we'd never run him over further, we would stick to this trip for the time being."

After the forfeit stage on January 21, 134 of the record 137 original entries for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln went forward. The second forfeit stage is on Tuesday, March 4.

RICHARD PHILLIPS APPEAL RESULT

Richard Phillips

The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 19th February 2003, considered an appeal lodged by Richard Phillips, the trainer of NEWSPLAYER (IRE), against the decision of the Haydock Stewards on 8th February to find him in breach of Rule 155 (ii) and to fine him £1700 following the gelding's run in the Levy Board Novices Hurdle. They also found Jodie Mogford, the rider, to be in breach of Rule 158, suspended him for 10 days and suspended NEWSPLAYER (IRE) from running for 40 days.

The Panel heard evidence from Phillips, who was legally represented, and Mogford. It also viewed video recordings of the race and the gelding's two previous runs at Fakenham and Kempton.

Having considered the evidence from Phillips, the Panel was satisfied that he had given adequate instructions to Mogford and furthermore that if Mogford had followed these instructions he would not have been found in breach. It therefore found Phillips not to be in breach of Rule 155 (ii).

The Panel therefore upheld Phillips's appeal, quashed the fine imposed on hm and the suspension imposed on NEWSPLAYER (IRE).

RECORD 135 GO FORWARD IN MARTELL COGNAC GRAND NATIONAL

A record total of 135 horses remain in the 2003 Martell Cognac Grand National after the first forfeit stage, including plenty of the best chasers in training.

The number going forward compares with 121 at the same stage a year ago, 100 in 2001, 85 in 2000 and 80 in 1999. There are 33 Irish-trained entries as against 23 at this point in 2002. The maximum field for the world's most famous chase, run at Aintree on Saturday, April 5, for the 156th time, is 40.

This year's renewal is not only the most valuable ever with £600,000 in prize money but could feature the highest-quality field ever assembled for the Martell Cognac Grand National.

The weights are still jointly headed by Florida Pearl and Marlborough on 11st 12lb, after only 14 defections at the first forfeit yesterday, details of which are announced today, Wednesday, February 19.

The most notable horse withdrawn is last year's second What's Up Boys whose trainer announced at the weights lunch on February 4 that he had run out of time to get his charge back from injury in time for the big race.

There are no surprise withdrawals with all the main contenders in the ante-post betting still entered, including Chives, Ad Hoc, Carbury Cross, David's Lad and Gingembre who has been withdrawn from the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup. Trainer Lavinia Taylor is aiming her stable star Gingembre at the Martell Cognac Grand National.

Her husband John Taylor explained: "Since Gingembre's run in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby in the autumn, he has had an ongoing set of problems which we hope we have now finally nailed down to very low copper levels in his blood. If you have this, you are more likely to suffer from azoturia or tying up'."

Gingembre was last seen in action when third to Behrajan in the Pillar Property Chase at Cheltenham, having previously finished the half-length runner-up to Be My Royal [the winner has subsequently tested positive for morphine and faces disqualification] in the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury in November.

He continued: "When a horse ties up, it does set preparations back and we weren't all that happy with him running in the Pillar but the vets said they were happy for him to run even though he had a relatively low blood count."

The trainer now is happier with Gingembre. She said: "He did come out of the Pillar quite well - the problem was it was very, very sticky ground and neither he nor Valley Henry could cope with it. Our horse was fine for a week afterwards and then all his blood levels went wrong again.

"He did a fairly strong canter on Tuesday (February 18) for the first time since then and seemed to come out of it well and appeared back to his best.

"We would hope to be able to gallop him for the first time on Saturday but it just didn't give us enough time for the Gold Cup. The Martell Cognac Grand National is the main target without a run beforehand, which will give me endless sleepless nights, but he won the Scottish Grand National [in 2001] when he hadn't run since January.

"Gingembre is at his best on fast ground on a flat left-handed track. We would run him on good to soft at Liverpool but we would not run him on heavy ground and we'd think strongly about soft."

Charles Barnett, Aintree's Managing Director, commented: "Obviously, we were sorry to hear that last year's second What's Up Boys would miss the race and our commiserations go to the connections. We hope he will be back next year.

"Despite this, we are delighted to see that the quality has, as expected, remained and that there are still 63 horses in the handicap."

THE MARTELL COGNAC GRAND NATIONAL

Class A, Showcase Handicap, Total Prize Fund £600,000, 3.45pm, Aintree, Saturday, April 5, 2003. Four Miles & Four Furlongs (Over the Grand National Course). Horses which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain or Ireland at January 22 may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible for a weight providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse's racecourse performances to February 1 would merit a minimum rating of 110, and that the horse has either won a Steeple Chase or Hurdle Race, or has run at least three times collectively in Steeple Chases or Hurdle Races run under the Rules of Racing of the same Recognised Turf Authority by February 1. At the Handicapper's discretion, such horses may be allotted a rating. The decision of the Senior BHB NH Handicapper shall be final. Entries closed Wednesday, January 22, 2003 (149 entries), entries revealed Thursday, January 23, 2003. Weights revealed Tuesday, February 4, 2003. TOP-CLASS GRADE 1 AT CHELTENHAM CLASHES AFTER FORFEIT STAGE

A series of ultra-competitive contests are in prospect for the nine Grade 1 chases and hurdles at Cheltenham's National Hunt Festival from Tuesday to Thursday, March 11 to 13, following the forfeit stage.

Last year's brilliant winner Best Mate is one of 32 horses remaining in the TOTE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP as he bids to become the first dual winner of chasing's Blue Riband since L'Escargot in 1970 and 1971. But he faces stiff competition including Ireland's rising star Beef Or Salmon, last season's Royal & SunAlliance Chase hero Hussard Collonges, the Pillar Property Chase winner Behrajan, recent Newbury victor Valley Henry and the 1999 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup hero See More Business, who looked as good as ever at the age of 13 when winning at Wincanton on Saturday. Keen Leader, a facile novice chase winner at Ascot the same afternoon, remains in the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup although he might go for the Royal & SunAlliance Chase. Gingembre is a notable absentee.

The SMURFIT CHAMPION HURDLE looks fascinating with the new star Rhinestone Cowboy, trained by Jonjo O'Neill, leading the ante-post betting following his success in Saturday's Axminster Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton. Also among the 26 remaining entries are Rhinestone Cowboy's stablemate Intersky Falcon, winner of the Pertemps Christmas Hurdle, Victor Chandler Bula Hurdle winner Rooster Booster, last year's first and second, Hors La Loi III and Marble Arch, 2002 Gerrard Wealth Management heroine Like-A-Butterfly and the progressive Flame Creek.

Last season's Irish Independent Arkle Chase winner Moscow Flyer is one of 20 remaining entries in the QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE with previous winners Flagship Uberalles (2002) and Edredon Bleu (2000) also still in the line-up. Trainer Paul Nicholls looks to have a strong hand including Cenkos and Kadarann while Florida Pearl remains in the race.

The French-trained 2002 winner Baracouda is one of 22 entries still in the BONUSPRINT STAYERS' HURDLE as is Ireland's favourite racehorse Limestone Lad. Classified, winner of Monday's National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell, and last season's Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle victor Galileo are also entered.

For the first time this year there are supplementary entry stages for the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, Smurfit Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle five days before the races.

There are 91 entries in the GERRARD WEALTH MANAGEMENT SUPREME NOVICES' HURDLE including Rhinestone Cowboy - who looks more likely to go for the Smurfit Champion Hurdle - and the Kingwell Hurdle second Thisthatandtother. The Edward O'Grady-trained Back In Front, an easy winner at Leopardstown last month, looks to be one of Ireland's main hopes.

The ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE NOVICES' HURDLE entries include the exciting Coolnagorna, who has been taken out of the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle, and a strong Irish-trained contingent headed by Weatherbys Champion Bumper hero Pizzaro and Limestone Lad's stablemate Solerina.

Ante-post favourite Saintsaire is one of 80 horses still remaining in a typically competitive JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE in which Martin Pipe's Don Fernando, the German-trained Moneytrain and Jonjo O'Neill's East Tycoon are others prominent in the betting.

THE IRISH INDEPENDENT ARKLE CHASE has 28 novice chasers engaged, among them the Paul Nicholls-trained Azertyuiop, Best Mate's stablemate Impek, Seamus Mullins' stable star Farmer Jack and Bust Out, trained like last year's winner Moscow Flyer by Jessica Harrington in Ireland.

Possible Gold Cup contender Keen Leader is among 41 still engaged in the ROYAL & SUNALLIANCE CHASE along with the Irish-trained pair Barrow Drive and Le Coudray, French star Jair Du Cochet and five Martin Pipe-trained entries including It Takes Time and Tarxien. Beef Or Salmon's connections have discounted the novice chase option by taking the horse out of the Royal & SunAlliance Chase.

Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham's Managing Director, commented: "It is pleasing that the winners of last season's Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, Smurfit Champion Hurdle, Queen Mother Champion Chase and Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle all look set to defend their crowns next month against some exciting new stars. There is also great strength in depth to the novice hurdles and chases, boding well for the future."
