PIPE LEADS WAY IN FESTIVAL HANDICAPS
Champion trainer Martin Pipe boasts a formidable team among the entries, revealed
today, for the seven handicaps run at next month's National Hunt Festival at
Cheltenham from Tuesday to Thursday, March 11 to 13.
There are a total of 613 entries for the seven races, of which Pipe accounts for 91 or
14.8%. The champion trainer has an excellent record in the handicaps and has won the
last three renewals of MILDMAY OF FLETE CHALLENGE CUP HANDICAP CHASE,
run on the Wednesday.
Pipe has a dozen of this year's 75 Mildmay Of Flete entries, including last year's winner
Blowing Wind and such high-class performers as Lady Cricket and dual Thomas Pink
Gold Cup hero Cyfor Malta. There are also 16 Irish-trained entries.
The 92 entries for the WILLIAM HILL NATIONAL HUNT HANDICAP CHASE, run on
Tuesday, March 11, include a string of top performers such as the 2000 Pertemps King
George VI Chase hero First Gold, who was due to have run at Wincanton on Saturday.
Tuesday's FULKE WALWYN KIM MUIR HANDICAP CHASE for amateur riders has 111
entries, including a bumper 29 trained in Ireland as well as Trinitro from Rune Haugen's
Norwegian stable.
Martin Pipe accounts for 14 of the 62 entries in the PERTEMPS FINAL, run on the
Tuesday, although trainer Jonjo O'Neill also has a strong hand with eight entries.
There are 109 entries in the CORAL CUP on Wednesday, March 12, and among them
are 29 trained in Ireland and no less than 23 from the Pipe stable.
The 131st running of the GRAND ANNUAL CHASE on Thursday, March 13, has
attracted 54 entries, including recent Game Spirit Chase winner Kadarann.
The concluding race to the 2003 National Hunt Festival, the VINCENT O'BRIEN
COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE, promises to be as competitive as ever with 110 entries,
including 30 trained in Ireland and one from France. In 1995 Cheltenham added to the
race title the name of Vincent O'Brien, who was on Friday voted the number one racing
great of all time by readers of the Racing Post.
Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham Racecourse's Managing Director, said: "The seven
handicaps run over the three days of the National Hunt Festival are always among the
most competitive races of the entire season and this year looks to be no different with
very strong entries from Britain, Ireland and further afield."

4. Only two horses have won the race twice - Sentina in 1957 and 1958, and Scot
Lane in 1982 and 1983. Unguided Missile, successful in 1998, had been runner-up in
1996.
THE WILLIAM HILL NATIONAL HUNT HANDICAP CHASE
Analysis
The William Hill National Hunt Chase has attracted an entry of 92 for the 2003 renewal,
11 more than 12 months ago and the second highest since 1992. There are 18 entries
from Ireland, three from France and one from Norway.
Champion trainer Martin Pipe has the highest number of entries with 15 horses
engaged. These are attheraces Gold Cup winner Bounce Back, French import Burlu,
Carryonharry, Chicuelo, Horus, recent impressive Sandown winner Iris Bleu, last
season's Royal & SunAlliance Chase runner-up Iznogoud, Jurancon II, Majed,
Montreal, 2002 Cathcart Chase victor Royal Auclair, Royal Predica, this season's
Intervet Trophy hero Stormez, Scottish Grand National winner Take Control and You're
Agoodun.
The Irish contingent is headed by Harbour Pilot, who has finished third behind Ireland's
leading Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup hope Beef Or Salmon on his latest two starts. Also
featuring among the Irish entries is the 2000 Tripleprint Gold cup winner Go Roger Go,
former smart hurdler Youlneverwalkalone, last year's Irish Grand National hero The
Bunny Boiler, the high-class Foxchapel King and Silver Steel from Christy Roche's yard
who looks to be an improving sort.
France's trio of entries are all trained by Francois Doumen who has given an entry to
First Gold, although his main target remains the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, along with
seasoned performer Djeddah and Innox.
Trinitro is the one Norwegian entry. On his three previous visits to Britain he fell at the
first in the 2000 Grand National and most recently fell in the Sporting Index Shield
Account Handicap Chase also over Cheltenham's cross-country course on December
13 and came third in the 2002 Sporting Index Cross Country Chase.
Several of the leading fancies for this season's Martell Grand National also hold entries
in this contest. They include the current ante-post favourite Ad Hoc, last year's Aintree
hero Bindaree and Carbury Cross, who was runner-up in this event 12 months ago, with
Ad Hoc third, while Bindaree completed his Grand National programme by finishing a
staying-on seventh. The 2001 Grand National winner Red Marauder also holds an
entry, along with his stable companion and brother Red Striker.
A potentially interesting runner could be Batman Senora, trained by Ian Williams. Also
entered in the Martell Grand National, Batman Senora was one of the leading chasers
in France and finished nine lengths third in France's top chase, the Grand
Steeple-Chase de Paris, last season.
Trainer Richard Phillips looks to have a strong hand with the progressive pair Another
General and La Landiere both holding entries. Another General, formerly a useful
hurdler, put up a gutsy display to win a novice chase at Doncaster last time while La
Landiere was very resilient in winning the Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase under
11st 12lb at Cheltenham on January 25, achieving a fifth consecutive victory. Phillips
could also run the veteran Go Ballistic, who has competed at every National Hunt
Festival since 1994.
Some of this season's best novices' hold entries including Jonjo O'Neill's Joss Naylor
and Skipper's Cleuch, trained in Scotland by Len Lungo.
Other entries include the Henrietta Knight-trained Maximize, winner of last season's
Grade One Feltham Novices' Chase at Kempton, and Charles Egerton's Killusty, who
appeared to be a progressive performer when he was last seen out two seasons ago.

THE PERTEMPS FINAL (HANDICAP HURDLE)
Analysis
The Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Final always provides a spectacular finale to the first
day of the National Hunt Festival and is sure to again in 2003 with a good entry of 62,
including 14 trained in Ireland.
Champion trainer Martin Pipe has 14 entries for the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle Final,
by far the highest number of any trainer.
The entries from Nicholashayne are Aquarius, Ballysicyos, Carlovent, Dubai Seven
Stars, Galant Moss, Guard Duty, Imperial De Thaix, Jurancon II, Kerrigand, Miss Fara,
Perkys Pride, Polar Champ, Ravenswood and Tucacas.
Of Pipe's entries Jurancon II won both over hurdles and fences since arriving from
France. He has looked as if there is more to come and also holds entries for the William
Hill National Hunt Chase and the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase.
Miss Fara is a useful Flat performer on her day, as when winning the Cesarewitch at
Newmarket in 2002, but has not been seen out since pulling up at Market Rasen in
November. The 10-year-old Polar Champ has been in good form over hurdles and
fences and is a thorough stayer, having finished second in the marathon Miles Gosling
Chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day. Tucacas was impressive in landing the JETS
Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham's Open Meeting in November but disappointed on her
only subsequent start at Wincanton on Boxing Day.
Another stable well-represented is that of Jonjo O'Neill and he has eight entries in total
- Ballysicyos, Creon, Inching Closer, Iris's Gift, Lorenzino, Native Emperor, Prokofiev
and Sudden Shock.
Creon looks a slightly in-and-out performer but could not have been more impressive
when winning his latest start at Chepstow while Inching Closer was a very comfortable
winner on his only run this season in a handicap hurdle at Haydock in February. Iris's
Gift is undefeated in four starts this season in novice company and also holds entries
for the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle and the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle.
Lorenzino has yet to recapture his best form this year but caught the eye when finishing
well at Sandown last time while last year's fourth Native Emperor was triumphant in the
Listed Tote Bookmakers Hurdle at Cheltenham's Open Meeting and also holds a
Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle entry.
Two horses that have been in tremendous form this season are Chopneyev and Royal
Emperor. Chopneyev, trained by Richard Phillips, has won his last three starts and was
most recently seen out in the highly-competitive Tote Scoop6 Handicap Hurdle at
Sandown on February 8, when he put up a determined performance to win by three
quarters of a length from Camden Tanner. Royal Emperor, trained by Sue Smith, has
won four times in total this season at Carlisle (twice), Wetherby and Haydock. His most
recent win was in a qualifier for the Pertemps Final at Haydock, where he put up a gutsy
performance to win by nine lengths with Fairwood Heart (2nd), Guard Duty (3rd), Moss
Harvey (4th), Kerrigand (5th), Tribal Venture (6th), Galant Moss (7th), Effectual (8th),
Legal Lunch (12th) and Alpha Blues (13th) all in arrears.
Of the 14 Irish entries, the strongest challengers look to be Fairwood Heart and the
Mouse Morris-trained Keepatem, who won a qualifier for this contest at Leopardstown
on January 12 (with Native Estates in third and Jack High fifth) in impressive fashion
and last time out won another handicap hurdle at Punchestown on February 2. Tony
Martin's Rare Ouzel has looked an improving sort this year and already has experience
of Cheltenham, having finished second in the JETS Handicap Hurdle at the Open
Meeting.
Finally, the Robert Stronge-trained Sure Future has been in good form this season and
was impressive when winning a good handicap hurdle at Kempton over Christmas.
Facts and Figures:
1. The Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle) was introduced to the National Hunt
Meeting in 1974, replacing the George Duller Handicap Hurdle. Until 1993, it was run
under the Coral banner. Other sponsors since then have been American Express
(1993), Hamlet Cigars (1994 & 1996), Astec Vodafone (1995), Hamlet Extra Mild Cigars
(1997), Unicoin Homes (1998) and Stakis Casinos (1999). Ladbrokes inherited
sponsorship in 2000 after acquiring Stakis Casinos and Pertemps took over in 2002.
2. The Pertemps Final (Handicap Hurdle) is the final of the Pertemps series, six
qualifiers of which took place at Chepstow (November 9), Market Rasen (November
21), Cheltenham (December 13), Wincanton (December 26), Leopardstown (January
12) and Haydock (February 8). The scheduled qualifier at Warwick on January 11 was
abandoned.
3. The smallest field to have competed in this race is 17 in 1976 when Good Prospect
won at 10/1.
4. Willie Wumpkins won this race in three consecutive years from 1979-81 when
11,12 &13. He died in 1995 at the ripe old age of 27.
5. Forgive 'N' Forget is the only Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup winner to have won this
race, beating 22 rivals in 1983 and going on to take the Gold Cup two years later.

THE CORAL CUP (HANDICAP HURDLE)
Analysis
The Coral Cup has the honour of being the newest race at the National Hunt Festival,
with the inaugural running taking place in 1993.
Champion trainer Martin Pipe was successful that year with Olympian and his third
victory last year, courtesy of Ilnamar, means that he has now won a third of the
runnings - he also struck with Big Strand in 1997.
The Nicholashayne handler has 23 of the 109 entries in 2003, the most that he has ever
entered for this heat. Among these are the 1998 JCB Triumph Hurdle winner Upgrade,
Tucacas, who justified favouritism when successful in the Jockeys Employment &
Training Scheme Handicap Hurdle at Prestbury Park in November, and Mr Cool, the
length runner-up to Classified in the Grade One Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle at
Cheltenham on January 25.
The Pipe battalion is completed by Galant Moss, Samon, Image De Marque II, Dream
With Me, Chicuelo, Ravenswood, Miss Fara, Ideal Du Bois Beury, Anatar, Miss Cool,
Neutron, Dubai Seven Stars, Murray River, Korelo, Tango Royal, Miss Tango,
Shemdani, Perkys Pride, Samsaam and Safari Paradise.
Three winners of this 2m 5f contest have emerged from Ireland. Time For A Run was
successful for Edward O'Grady in 1994, the following year Chance Coffey prevailed for
Pat O'Donnell and three years ago Christy Roche saddled Khayrawani for J P
McManus.
There are 29 entries from the Emerlad Isle this season, including Yeoman's Point who
represents the same connections as the 1999 winner. This Sadler's Wells gelding found
just Native Emperor too good on his last start in the Tote Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle
at Cheltenham in November. Roche has also entered Calladine, who was unplaced in
last year's Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
Tom Taaffe is represented by Emotional Moment, who was unfortunate not to get a run
in the Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury on February 8, after missing the cut by one. This
Religiously gelding won three handicap hurdles in Ireland between October and
December of last year.
Spirit Leader, trained by Jessica Harrington, did run in the Tote Gold Trophy which was
bad news for her 26 rivals as she was one and a half lengths too good for the best of
them. This was the second time that connections had launched a successful raid in
Britain this season, having won the William Hill Handicap Hurdle at Sandown in
December.
Other notable home-based entries include the Declan Carroll-trained Benbyas, who was
the seven length runner-up to Native New Yorker in the Western Daily Press Handicap
Hurdle at Cheltenham in January and has had this race as his main target all season,
and Quazar, trained by Jonjo O'Neill, who was a top-class novice hurdler last season,
winning Graded contests at both Aintree and Punchestown.
Facts and Figures:
1. The Coral Cup is the newest race at the National Hunt Festival, having been
introduced in 1993, the year after the first running of the Weatherbys Champion
Bumper.
2. The first winner, Olympian, picked up an additional 50,000 bonus having won the
Imperial Cup at Sandown Park the previous weekend. The same bonus, increased to
60,000 this year, is offered again by Sunderlands, bookmaking sponsor of the Imperial
Cup, to any horse that wins the Sandown race and then goes on to success in any
contest at the Cheltenham Festival.
3. The fastest time in the eight runnings was set in 2000 by What's Up Boys, who
scored in 4m 53.8s, beating the previous best of 4m 57.0s set by Big Strand in 1997.
4. The Irish have won the race on three occasions. Time For A Run lifted the prize for
Edward O'Grady in 1994, Chance Coffey, trained by Pat O'Donnell, followed up in 1995
and Khayrawani won for Christy Roche in 1999.

THE 130th YEAR OF THE CHELTENHAM GRAND ANNUAL CHASE CHALLENGE
CUP (HANDICAP)
Analysis
The Grand Annual Chase Challenge Cup is a historic contest as it remains the oldest
race in the National Hunt calendar, with the inaugural running taking place in 1834. This
year there are 54 entries for this extended two-mile handicap - the third highest number
ever.
Champion trainer Martin Pipe is still searching for that elusive first victory and this year
the master of Nicholashayne has made three entries. Exit Swinger found only the Arthur
Moore-trained Fadoudal Du Cochet too good last year and this pair could draw swords
again in 2003.
The Pipe trio is completed by Wahiba Sands, who also holds a Queen Mother
Champion Chase entry and is one of only two horses to have beaten last year's Tote
Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate over fences, and Golden Alpha, an Irish
Independent Arkle Trophy entry who has finished the runner-up in two novice chases
at Prestbury Park this term having earlier won four similar events at smaller
racecourses.
Eight other horses have been given entries in both this contest and the Queen Mother
Champion Chase - Armaturk, Dark'N Sharp, Kadarann, Killultagh Storm, Redemption,
Strong Run, Turgeonev and Young Devereaux.
Fadoudal Du Cochet's victory was the second Irish-trained winner in the last three
renewals. Space Trucker was successful for Jessica Harrington in 1999, to give the
Irish their first winner since Churchfield Boy had prevailed for Michael Cunningham in
1983.
This season 17 entries have been received from the Emerald Isle. As well as last year's
winner, Moore could be represented by Glenelly Gale, who was third behind Kadarann
on his last outing in the 40th Anniversary Handicap Chase at Cheltenham on December
14.
Fellow Irish handler Edward O'Grady has also made two entries. Go Roger Go has
already won a major handicap chase at Prestbury Park, successful in the 2000 renewal
of the Tripleprint Gold Cup, while Satchmo has not been seen on a racecourse for over
a year and on his only previous visit to Cheltenham was sixth in the 2001 Thomas Pink
Gold Cup behind Shooting Light.
Venetia Williams was the last home-based trainer to win the Grand Annual, saddling
Samakaan three years ago. Her three entries include Davoski, who won a handicap
chase at Ascot last November, Bleu Superbe, a winner of four such races since May,
and Harvis, a remarkably consistent type who has been placed on six of his last nine
runs without managing to get his head in front.
Paul Nicholls is another high-profile trainer who has yet to win this contest. He is
represented by eight entries - Kadarann, Young Devereaux, Armaturk, Epervier D'Or,
Vol Solitaire, Devon View, Asador and Ivanoph.
Facts and Figures:
1. The Grand Annual is the oldest race at the National Hunt Meeting, and
the oldest in the chasing calendar. It was first run at Andoversford, near Cheltenham,
in April, 1834 over three miles of open country.
2. The race died out in the 1860s, like much of the steeplechasing calendar, but was
revived at the turn of the century. In fact, for some time, it was the single most important
National Hunt race, surpassing even the Grand National. During the early 1900s, it was
held at Melton Mowbray, Leicester and Warwick, before finally returning to Cheltenham
in 1913.
3. The longest-priced post-war winner is Hipparchus at 100/1 in 1954.
4. The fastest winning time was recorded by Samakaan when successful in 2000 in
3m 52.40s. This beat a record of 3m 54.20s set by Hal's Farewell back in 1968.

VINCENT O'BRIEN COUNTY HANDICAP HURDLE
Analysis
The Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle, the final race of the National Hunt
Festival, is always an extremely competitive contest and a tremendous betting heat.
Last year's winner, the Philip Hobbs-trained Rooster Booster, is being aimed at this
season's Smurfit Champion Hurdle, but the 2002 runner-up The Gatherer, trained by
Arthur Moore, is once again among the 110 entries. This is the fourth highest number
of entries received for this two mile, one furlong event, only surpassed by 115 last year,
114 in 1999 and 112 in 2001.
Champion trainer Martin Pipe was successful in 1998 with Blowing Wind and this year
the master of Nicholashayne has 17 representatives to choose from. Principal among
them are Polar Red, last year's Sunderlands Imperial Cup hero, Copeland, the 2002
winner of the Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury, and Westender, a winner of five hurdles
last season and runner-up in the 2002 Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the
Cheltenham Festival.
The Pipe contingent is completed by Tucacas, Image De Marque II, Dream With Me,
Idaho D'Ox, Bernardon, Anatar, Maragun, Miss Cool, Lunar Crystal, Murray River,
Canada, Perkys Pride, Samsaam and Tactful Remark.
The County Hurdle has been won by eight Irish-trained contestants since 1953,
although the most recent winner to emerge from the Emerald Isle was the Edward
O'Grady-trained Staplestown in 1981. This year 30 horses have been entered from
Ireland.
Jessica Harrington has already launched two successful raids in Britain this season with
Spirit Leader and the seven-year-old could bid for her hat-trick. After winning the
William Hill Handicap Hurdle at Sandown in December, she returned this month to beat
a high-class field by one-and-a-half lengths in the Tote Gold Trophy.
Other Irish-trained possibles who ran in the prestigious Newbury event who have been
entered here include Atlantic Rhapsody (13th), Holy Orders (23rd), Scolardy (24th) and
Calladine (unseated rider).
Home-based Tote Gold Trophy runners who could line-up at Prestbury Park include
Non So (2nd), Monkerhostin (6th), Bernardon (8th), Warjan (9th), Polar Red
(10th), Chauvinist (11th), Copeland (15th), Joe Cullen (21st) and Majlis (25th).
Facts and Figures:
1. Vincent O'Brien's record at Cheltenham's National Hunt Festival was outstanding,
with 25 victories, including four Gold Cups, three Champion Hurdles, ten Supreme
Novices' Hurdles and a flurry of supporting races. This will be the ninth year that the
County Hurdle bears the name of Vincent O'Brien, who retired from training in 1994
.
2. The first County Hurdle was run in 1920, and won by Trespasser, ridden by George
Duller, who until has also had a race named after him at Cheltenham's premier meeting.
3. The County Hurdle has suffered more abandonments than any other race at the
Festival. Since the war, the race has been lost on five occasions, including last season
because of the foot and mouth crisis.
4. The race has been a favourite for the Irish with eight winners since 1953.
5. The longest-priced winner in recent years was Winnie The Witch at 33/1 in 1991.
6. The fastest time for the winning horse is 3 mins 51.2 secs by Moody Man in 1990.
7. In 1998, Blowing Wind, picked up an additional 50,000 bonus having won the
Imperial Cup at Sandown Park the previous weekend. The bonus, increased to 60,000
this year, is offered again by Sunderlands, bookmaking sponsor of the Imperial Cup,
to any horse that wins the Sandown race and then goes on to success in any contest
at the Cheltenham Festival.
