JONJO'S GEM

Jonjo O'Neill's Rhinestone Cowboy proved his potential against the more experienced horses in emphatic style today in the Axminster Kingwell Hurdle and has shot to favouritism for the Smurfit Champion Hurdle at 3-1 (from 6-1) with William Hill.

Also at Wincanton, See More Business proved he is still a force to contend with at 13 and had his odds halved to 20-1 for the Gold Cup after winning the big chase for the second year in a row.

Over at Ascot, Keen Leader benefited from a late blunder by Jair du Cochet and has been promoted to favourite at 3-1 for the Sun Alliance.

Tiutchev is now 8-1 for the Champion Chase with Hills after his victory at Ascot this afternoon.

£340,000 PRIZE MONEY BOOST FOR ROYAL MEETING

PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES UP £100,000 TO £350,000

Prize money for Royal Ascot, to be run from Tuesday 17th to Saturday 21st June this year, has been increased by £340,000 to £3,381,000 for 2003, with the most notable increases going to the Prince of Wales's Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes.

An injection of £100,000 brings the value of the Prince of Wales's Stakes to £350,000 to reflect the fact that after just three runnings as a Group One, it has achieved the second highest three year average rating in Britain in the International Classifications, behind just the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

Last month it was announced that the Queen Anne Stakes would receive a £115,000 boost to £250,000 following its promotion to Group One status. The Gold Cup also goes up £30,000 to £250,000 to bring it into line with the St James's Palace Stakes, Queen Anne, Coronation and Golden Jubilee Stakes.

In all, 19 of the 30 races at Royal Ascot have been increased in value this year, including boosts of £15,000 for the Ribblesdale and £10,000 for the Sandringham. Last month it was announced that the Queen Anne Stakes, which will now be restricted to four-year-olds and upwards, would become the fourth race on the opening Tuesday card, switching places with the Coventry Stakes, which will now open the Royal Meeting.

The full running order for Royal Ascot 2003 has now been confirmed. The Albany Stakes switches from Saturday to Friday this year with the Windsor Castle Stakes moving in reverse.

All other races will be run on the same day as in 2002, although there are some minor alterations to the order of running on all days except Wednesday. These alterations are in place to stage the opening race on each day on the straight course so that the Heath car park entrances can remain open for as long as possible.

“The increased prize money at this year's Royal Meeting, especially the international championship races, is essential in this era of global competition,” said Douglas Erskine-Crum, Chief Executive at Ascot Racecourse.

“Royal Ascot is Europe's flagship race meeting in terms of the action on the track, attendance, media interest and its worldwide reputation. It is crucial that we continue to build on its established position so that its status as the world's premier meeting over more than one day is strengthened.”
