JONJO O'NEILL ENQUIRY RESULT

The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 13th February 2003, held an enquiry to consider whether or not Tom Siddall, the rider of TOP OF THE LEFT, had committed a breach of Rule 158, and whether or not Jonjo O'Neill, the trainer, had committed a breach of Rule 155(ii) and Rule 221B(i) in the light of Jockey Club Instruction H2 headed 'Schooling in Public', concerning the running and riding of the gelding in the Sparkle Cleaning Service Novices Hurdle Race (Div 11) at Exeter on 27th January 2003. This was referred to the Stewards of the Jockey Club by the Exeter Stewards following their enquiry of the same day.

The Panel heard evidence from Siddall and O'Neill, who were both legally represented, viewed video recordings of the race and considered other evidence.

Having considered the evidence the Panel found Siddall to be in breach of Rule 158 in that he had made insufficient effort from the third last flight.

Siddall stated that his instructions were to settle him in, take his time, not to hit him behind the saddle, to do his best and not knock him about because he had been off the track for just short of two years. He admitted that he had appeared to use insufficient effort from the third last flight and on reflection should either have pulled up or been more vigorous. His concern that the horse was getting tired led him to let it come home on its own time.

However, the Panel did not accept that this was an adequate reason for not making more effort. The Panel was not satisfied that O'Neill had given adequate instructions bearing in mind the horse's lengthy lay off and felt Siddall might have ridden differently had O'Neill given Instructions as to what to do if the horse got tired; that is, either to pull up or ride out.

Consequently it found O'Neill to be in breach of Rule 155 (ii).

It suspended Siddall from riding for five days from Friday 21st February to Wednesday 26th February on days on which jump racing is scheduled to take place. It imposed a fine of £6000 on O'Neill, this being his third offence under Rule 155 during the previous twelve months.

It also suspended TOP OF THE LEFT from running in any race for 30 days from Friday 21st February to Saturday 22nd March.

BROADWAY SCORE TO GO STRAIGHT FOR THE FREEPHONE STANLEY LINCOLN

John Hills revealed today that Broadway Score will have his next outing in the £100,000 Freephone Stanley Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday, March 22.

The five-year-old, who has 8st 11lb in the famous mile handicap, has won three times in 12 starts and was only beaten a length when sixth to Riverse Angle in a Listed contest at Longchamp in October. He is currently priced at 33/1 with the sponsors.

"Broadway Score is on schedule for the Lincoln and I'm happy with him - he l
ooks a picture and he's slowly building up in his work," said the Lambourn trainer. "I would imagine he'll go straight for the race rather than have a prep - I might take him for a gallop around Lingfield. I think he's a horse who is a worthy candidate for the Lincoln."

Broadway Score's three successes have all come on good or faster ground.

"I certainly wouldn't mind the ground being on the easier side. If it was heavy we might dodge the bullet and wait. One of the reasons he's not having a prep for this race is that there's a long season ahead of us," explained Hills.

"He's a horse who runs good races when he's had a break. He won first time out last year [in a classified stakes at Haydock in April] and we can probably have him near spot on first time out although, if it was very heavy, it might find him out."

Broadway Score, on his most recent start, was fifth to Brilliant Red in a 10-furlong conditions event on Lingfield's all-weather track in December. He ran over a mile on five occasions and 10 furlongs the same number of times last year.

"I think Broadway Score's best trip is a mile - I'd love to say 10 furlongs as he's got the stamina to get the longer trip but his running style is quite free. He likes to be up with the pace and, when we run him over 10 furlongs, he tends to be a little keen.

"Last time I ran him over 10 furlongs but it was on the Lingfield Polytrack so that was slightly different. A good stiff mile is probably his ideal trip. If he settled better this season than he did last year, when he was a relatively inexperienced horse, then he might get 10 furlongs in time."

Paul Johnson is hoping to have his first runner in the Freephone Stanley Lincoln in the form of recent Wolverhampton scorer Sarraaf. The seven-year-old has 7st 10lb for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln, run over Doncaster's straight mile, and is a 40/1 chance with Stanley.

"Barring anything unforeseen, we'll be declaring Sarraaf for the Lincoln with the option of going for the Spring Mile if he's balloted out [a maximum of 24 runners can compete in the Freephone Stanley Lincoln with the Freephone Stanley Spring Mile run the day before, Friday, March 21].

"If he could sneak into the Lincoln it would be even better but he's rated 82 on the turf and historically horses who have got into the Lincoln have been rated somewhere around the 85/86 mark, so to be realistic we've got to look at the Spring Mile."

Sarraaf has raced 71 times during the course of his career, winning seven times and being placed on another 14 occasions. He has won three times for Johnson, who only had his first runner as a trainer in August, and the victories include a seven-furlong classified stakes on the all-weather at Wolverhampton on Monday (February 10), when he was too strong for the favourite Voluptuous.

While this was Johnson's first success this year, the County Durham-based handler made an immediate impact in the training ranks with his six-strong string in the last five months of 2002, obtaining 11 victories from 61 runs at a strike rate of 18%

Asked if Sarraaf would run again before Doncaster, he replied: "We're still looking at that and it's up to the owner. Realistically the horse is so much better on turf than he is on sand.

"We'd have to consider Lingfield, which is nearer a simulation of turf, but it's a difficult journey from here. Wolverhampton is bad enough - we set off at 5am on Monday and got back just after 11pm at night. Lingfield is a two-day job at least."

Johnson, who is a fully qualified dentist, is unconcerned about the mile trip of the Freephone Stanley Lincoln or the ground conditions which Sarraaf will encounter, although he feels his charge must have a strong pace.

"Sarraaf is actually very, very good anywhere from six furlongs to nine furlongs depending on the conditions," explained Johnson. "He was second last year over this trip in the Thirsk Hunt Cup when with Ian Semple and he's won for me over six furlongs at Catterick.

"He is very versatile as far as the ground goes and he won at Leicester over seven furlongs in very sticky conditions.

"The main problem is that if you get a falsely run race and it turns into a sprint, then he's no use at all. The strong pace at Leicester allowed Sarraaf to have the run of the race in exactly the way that he wanted. He must get a strong pace and I'm sure the Lincoln and the Spring Mile will both have strong paces!"

After the forfeit stage on January 21, 134 of the record 137 original entries for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln go forward. The second forfeit stage is on March 4.
