THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY
LINGFIELD, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2003
3:10PM LITTLEWOODS BET DIRECT HANDICAP (CLASS C) (4YO+,0-100), 1M 2F
GOING: STANDARD
1) (9) /48- Compton Bolter Gerard Butler 6-10-00 Eddie Ahern
BP=7/1 Coral & Ladbrokes
Has not raced since March last year but Gerard Butler has his horses in good form. This is not a particularly strong race and he could have a chance.
2) (10) 3-56 Herodotus Clive Brittain 5-9-13b Ian Mongan
BP=12/1 generally
Has run well enough in his two starts in similar races to this but is an unlucky sort who does not seem to get the breaks.
3) (13)217- Shami David Loder 4-9-09 Jimmy Fortune
BP=10/1 Ladbrokes
Won a 12-furlong maiden at Doncaster in July but the form is nothing special. Disappointed on his only subsequent run and this is a much tougher race.
4) (2) 61-4 Eastern Breeze Paul D’Arcy 5-9-06 Michael Fenton
BP=6/1 Tote
Won over a course and distance in December and ran well when fourth last time out but the handicapper may have him.
5) (7) 131- Courageous Duke Jeremy Noseda 4-9-01 Shane Kelly
BP=4/1 Ladbrokes, Coral & Tote
First run on the all-weather. Successful in Newcastle maiden and a Newmarket handicap on the turf. No value.
6) (12) 560- Give Back Calais Peter Makin 5-8-12p Jimmy Quinn
BP= 33/1 Ladbrokes, William Hill & Tote
Has been overall disappointing. This trip is new - he has raced over seven furlongs mostly.
7) (1)314- The Glen Mark Tompkins 5-8-11 Richard Quinn
BP= 16/1 Tote
First run on the all-weather. Won a Leicester claimer and then ran well when fourth in a York handicap.
8) (11)30-7 Medallist NON RUNNER
9) (14) 20-3 Dream Magic Mick Ryan 5-8-08 Simon Whitworth
BP=8/1 Ladbrokes, William Hill & Tote
Ran well when third on his first all-weather run on January 22. Must have a chance.
10) (4) 687- Movie King Alan Jarvis 4-8-07 Neil Pollard
BP= 20/1 Ladbrokes & Tote
Won a three-year-old handicap here last year but the form was not that good. Ran disappointingly after winning over a mile at Windsor on turf but may need to drop down the weights a bit. Makes the running and has a chance. Fair value.
11) (6) 0-90 Burgundy Simon Dow 6-8-07p Paul Doe
BP=25/1 generally
Dropped 5lb for his latest poor run but may need to come down further. Won a similar race in March off 4lb higher.
12) (8) 1-25 Gallant Boy David Evans 4-8-06t Keith Dalgleish
BP=7/1 Coral
Very consistent sort who was knocked back last time out here over this distance before running on. Has a good chance with luck in running. Excellent value.
13) (3) 1282 Arpeggio David Nicholls 8-8-03 Franny Norton
BP=16/1 Ladbrokes
Been running at Southwell and Wolverhampton and was second in a claimer last time. This is much tougher.
14) (5) -229 Kelpie Andrew Balding 4-8-01v1 Martin Dwyer
BP= 9/1 Coral & Ladbrokes
Won over a rating of 62 here in December and has run second twice off 72 and is now racing off 74. Had no luck last time out. Has a chance.
SUMMARY
A fascinating race with quite a few imponderables but GALLANT BOY has an excellent chance and is great value each-way at 7/1.
