RUDKIN TAKES THE AL ASAYL CHAMPIONSHIP

Paddy Rudkin’s Al Tareek made a winning racecourse debut when landing the Listed Al Asayl Championship for Purebred Arabians over 1,600 metres at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club on Sunday evening.

Ridden by Willie Supple, Al Tareek, a three-year-old son of Bengali d’Albret, raced in sixth with the Erwan Charpy-trained Mleeh taking the field along and into the straight. Al Tareek began to make steady progress to challenge the Sebastien Castellier-ridden Mleeh from the 200-metre marker and the pair battled hard as the line approached.

Three strides out Al Tareek got to the lead and put his head down to win by half a length from Mleeh, with the Richard Mullen-ridden Al Zaeem in third. Mudarik played up in the stalls and was withdrawn from the race.

The Al Asayl Championship was Supple’s second win of the evening after Zaajel, trained by Charpy, came with a very late run to get up in the last stride to win the opener, the Shahama Handicap for Thoroughbreds over 2,200 metres. Stablemate Marciale, under Seb Sanders, took the field along with the Kieren Fallon-partnered Emteyaz leading into the straight.

Race favourite Monjez, with Brett Doyle in the saddle, came between horses to take up the lead 200 metres from the line and ran for home. But it was not to be and Zaajel, a four-year-old son of Nashwan, came to challenge and the pair battled to the line with Zaajel getting up by a short head. Lancewood, trained by Satish Seemar, finished in third.

Castellier came with a well-timed run aboard the Julio Peromingo-trained Al Nab’a to win the second race of the evening The Seih Al Sideirah Handicap over 1,400 metres for UAE bred Arabians.

Al Nab’a, who was a nose runner-up over 1,600 metres here on his last outing, raced in seventh in the early stages with AF Athhalatni, the mount of Craig Arnold, disputing the lead with the Rod Simpson-trained Al Wahyd. Al Nab’a moved up to be fifth into the straight and made smooth progress to lead 50 metres out and was pushed out to win by three quarters of a length from AF Athhalatni with the Seamus O’Gorman-partnered running on late to take third.

Peromingo’s success continued with victory in the fourth race the Emirates Daughters of the Desert a Prestige race over 1,600 metres for three-year-old UAE bred Arabian fillies, with the debutant Marinette, half sister to the winner of the second race of the evening.

Marinette, daughter of Bengali d’Albret, under Paul Hanagan was always going well in third place on the rail, with Omniat, under Chris Taylor, taking the twelve runners along. Into the straight Marinette made progress to take the lead 250 metres out and set sail for home. Rayyah, a winner on her only outing, challenged but had to settle as runner-up with Hope running on late to take third.

The evening of close finishes continued in the third race, the Al Ashaab Handicap for Purebred Arabians over 1,600 metres. Into the straight it was the long-term leader, Doug Watson’s Fine Fellow in control with a wall of horses starting to launch a challenge. Ali Rashid Al Raihe’s Dormanor, a course and distance winner last time out, soon took up the
lead but Kasid, under Supple, and Sarrab, the mount of David Hayse, were neck and neck with Dormanor as the line approached.

At the wire it was the Yancey Carter Jr-trained Sarrab who put his head down to cross the line a neck in front of Kasid and Dormanor, who wereseparated by a nose.

Carter Jr landed his double with Badran in the final race of the evening, the Al Wathba Purebred Arabian Handicap. Brett Doyle had the son of Dormane well placed throughout the race with RS Samin in the lead until Badran took up the running 150 metres from the line. He was challenged by the Michael Hussey-partnered Karim de la Prade approaching the line but held on to win by a short-head.
