PRA announces Edward Gillespie as Chairman
The Pony Racing Authority (PRA) is delighted to announce Edward Gillespie, former Managing Director of Cheltenham Racecourse, has been appointed Chairman of the Pony Racing Authority as of January 1, 2013, taking over from Charles Barnett who recently completed his three year term as Chairman.
Edward has always been very involved and supportive of Pony Racing since it was introduced to this country in 2004, following a 12-month review of British Jump Racing in which Edward was instrumental. Throughout his years at Cheltenham, Edward provided unstinting support for Pony Racing enabling the initiative to flourish and grow.
In just eight years Pony Racing has become one of the country’s fastest growing equestrian sports and is pivotal in the training and developing of many talented young riders in horseracing.
Commenting on the appointment, Charles Barnett, retiring Chairman of the PRA, said: “I'm thrilled that Edward has agreed to take on this vital role within an area of the industry that is so important to the future of the sport.
“Edward has such enormous knowledge and it will be very exciting for Pony Racing to benefit from this and his huge experience.”
Clarissa Daly, Chief Executive, commented: “It is such an exciting time for Pony Racing with some great initiatives planned.
“With Edward’s experience, passion and knowledge we really should be able to take the sport to the next level.
“Over 100 graduates from Pony Racing have already gone on to ride Under Rules with many more working within the racing industry; we are aiming to provide many more.
“The PRA is committed to increase the numbers from non-racing and non-horsey backgrounds and to make racing more accessible to children and young people from all walks of life. With Edward as our new Chairman we are better placed than ever to achieve this.”
Edward Gillespie commented: "Pony Racing in Britain is a massive success story.
“I feel greatly honoured to be asked to chair the PRA and shall do all I can to help the board, executive and the extensive support group build on that success.”
