Petit Robin and Our Vic share top-weight of 11st 12lb for the £150,000 Grade Three Paddy Power Gold Cup (2.35pm) at Cheltenham on Saturday, November 14. The weights allotted to the 49 entries are revealed today, Wednesday, November 4.

The David Pipe-trained Our Vic landed the prestigious handicap in 2005, while the Nicky Henderson-trained Petit Robin ran his best race when third in the Grade One Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase at The Festival in March.

The Paddy Power Gold Cup is the feature contest of The Open at Cheltenham, which offers fantastic racing over three days - Friday, November 13, to Sunday, November 15.

Poquelin shares 6/1 ante-post favouritism with stablemate Chapoturgeon, winner of the Listed Jewson Novices’ Handicap Chase at The Festival in March. The Paul Nicholls-trained pair have been allotted 11st 1lb and 11st 4lb, respectively. Poquelin landed the zeturf.com Handicap Chase over two and a half miles at Cheltenham on October 17. The six-year-old held Gaelic Flight (9st 9lb) in second, with Hold Em (9st 13lb) third.

Another from the Nicholls yard, Tatenen (11st) was a high-class novice last year and defeated the former top-class hurdler Straw Bear (10st 4lb) when winning the Grade Two Independent Newspaper Novices’ Chase at The Open last season.

The JP McManus-owned Straw Bear, winner of the Grade One Christmas Hurdle at Kempton in December 2007, is still seeking a first win over fences but could open his account at Warwick this afternoon.

The eight-year-old’s trainer, Nick Gifford, revealed: “The Paddy Power Gold Cup is an option at this stage. It is by no means certain and we will no more after he runs today. He is in great form and all his best runs have come with cut in the ground. As long as we are not looking at extremes of going, he won’t mind.”

The well-supported Alan King-trained Tarotino (10st 10lb) is seeking a four-timer, while Kerry National hero Northern Alliance, from the shrewd Irish stable of Tony Martin, has 10st 12lb.

Another potential Irish raider, the Edward O’Grady-trained Tranquil Sea (10st 13lb), was a Grade One winner over hurdles and notched a Grade Three victory over fences at Naas on October 31.

At Ascot the same day, Shining Gale (10st 10lb) ran a promising race to take third in the United House Gold Cup behind The Last Derby (10st 5lb), while the Robert and Sally Alner-trained Master Medic (11st 1lb) completed a four-timer in the Listed Byrne Group Handicap Chase.

Sally Alner said today: “He is in the Paddy Power Gold Cup and we will monitor the situation but at the moment we could wait for Ascot as the Cheltenham race may come a bit quick.”

Bible Lord (10st 8lb) travelled well for a long way in last year’s Paddy Power Gold Cup before fading to finish eighth behind Imperial Commander. The Andy Turnell-trained eight-year-old showed himself to be in cracking form with a Listed victory over the distance at Wetherby on October 30.

Gauvain has 10st 13lb, while others of note include last year’s runner-up Barbers Shop (11st 7lb), owned by the Queen, Watch My Back (9st 11lb) and From Dawn To Dusk (10st 1lb).

Latest sponsor prices on the Paddy Power Gold Cup: 6/1 Poquelin, 6/1 Chapoturgeon, 7/1 Tarotino, 10/1 Northern Alliance, 10/1 Tatenen, 10/1 Tranquil Sea, 12/1 Barbers Shop, 12/1 Shining Gale, 12/1 Master Medic, 14/1 Watch My Back, 14/1 Bible Lord, 16/1 From Dawn To Dusk, 16/1 Gauvain, 16/1 Ballyfitz, 16/1 My Petra, 16/1 Pepsyrock, 16/1 Straw Bear, 20/1 Petit Robin, 20/1 Gwanako, 20/1 Tartak, 20/1 War Of The World, 20/1 Akilak, 20/1 Hold Em, 20/1 The Package, 25/1 Battlecry, 25/1 Our Vic, 25/1 Tamarinbleu, 25/1 Il Duce, 25/1 According To Pete, 25/1 I'm So Lucky, 25/1 Pop, 25/1 Three Mirrors, 25/1 Valley Ride, 25/1 Sir Harry Ormesher, 25/1 Abragante, 25/1 Gaelic Flight, 25/1 Jaamid, 25/1 Razor Royale, 33/1 Always Waning, 33/1 My Will, 33/1 Knowhere, 33/1 Stan, 33/1 Palomar, 33/1 Leslingtaylor, 33/1 Strawberry, 33/1 Commemoration Day, 33/1 Island Life, 50/1 Knight Legend

MORGAN SETS HEART ON GREATWOOD HURDLE

Raise Your Heart is in the form of his life at present and the six-year-old’s trainer Joanna Morgan is hoping he can carry that into the £100,000 Grade Three Greatwood Hurdle (2.20pm) at Cheltenham’s The Open on Sunday, November 15.

The weights for the extended two-mile handicap hurdle are revealed today, Wednesday, November 4. Raise Your Heart has been allotted 10st 7lb.

Morgan, who trains in County Meath, Ireland, revealed today: “The plan is to take Raise Your Heart to Cheltenham for the Greatwood Hurdle. He is good on the Flat and he is good over hurdles, he is just a good horse. He will go on any ground, as all good horses do. I wouldn’t run him on firm going because I wouldn’t want to break him up, but he handles anything.”

Successful four times and runner-up twice from six starts on the Flat this year, Raise Your Heart posted his best effort to date when winning a Listed race on the level at Leopardstown on October 26.

Lightly-raced over hurdles in the past year, the gelding was 11th in both the Galway Hurdle in July and the Grade Three Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle at The Festival in March, but previously landed a Listed hurdle at Punchestown in October, 2008.

Morgan, who is forced to adopt unorthodox training methods with her charge, continued: “His last run was his best on the Flat. He has always been very giddy and keen but for some reason the penny has suddenly dropped. He is much better now because he doesn’t have the revs up the whole way, he is settling better.

“He is impossible to train in the winter, he is a disaster when the weather turns. I train him out of the field because that is where he is happiest. He is usually out there about 23 hours a day and with the inclement weather we had here last winter, I had to give up on him last year. I brought him back for The Festival at Cheltenham but he wasn’t quite right.

“I have a plan this year to maybe take him to Dubai on the Flat and then come back for Cheltenham in March. I think he will thrive in the warmth out there so I want to run him in the Greatwood and then head out to the sun for a few runs before bringing him back for the Festival.

“I am pleased with the weight he has, 10st 7lb is ideal. I just hope I can keep him right.”

Celestial Halo came within a whisker of winning the Grade One Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle at The Festival and the Paul Nicholls-trained hurdler tops the weights with 11st 12lb.

Blue Bajan, trained by Andy Turnell is another who is classy on the Flat and over hurdles. The seven-year-old, allotted 11st 6lb, won the 2008 Grade Three Swinton Handicap Hurdle and was fourth in the Group Three Jockey Club Cup over two miles at Newmarket on October 17.

Ashkazar (11st 2lb) defeated Whiteoak (10st 11lb) to win the Grade Two Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton last term and won at the first attempt over fences at Stratford on October 29. The five-year-old could revert to the smaller obstacles in the Greatwood Hurdle.

The Alan Fleming-trained Starluck (10st 8lb) was impressive when seeing off Classic Swain (9st 9lb) and Simarian (10st 2lb) to win over the course and distance on October 17, while the Charlie Mann-trained Katies Tuitor (10st 9lb) held the Howard Johnson-trained Red Moloney (10st 4lb) at Kempton a day later.

Medermit (10st 7lb), El Dancer (10st 6lb) and Cape Tribulation (10st 6lb) were all classy novices last term, as was the Nicholls-trained American Trilogy (10st 13lb), winner of the Grade Three Vincent O’Brien County Hurdle at The Festival.

Numide landed the Greatwood Hurdle in 2008 for trainer Gary Moore and has 9st 10lb.

KAUTO STAR HEADS SUPERB ENTRY OF 26 FOR THE BETFAIR CHASE AT HAYDOCK PARK

After suffering last fence heartache in last year’s Betfair Chase, owner Clive Smith is looking forward to seeing his outstanding chaser Kauto Star bid for a third success in this year’s £200,000 Grade One Betfair Chase.

The Paul Nicholls-trained nine-year-old is one of 26 horses entered for the prestigious three-mile chase, highlight of racing on the first day of the Northwest Racing Masters at Haydock Park on Saturday, November 21.

Kauto Star announced himself as one of the leading staying chasers with a crushing 17-length victory over Beef Or Salmon in the 2006 Betfair Chase before going on to further top-class success in the Tingle Creek Chase, the King George VI Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

He returned to Haydock Park the following season to register a half-length verdict over Exotic Dancer and followed up with another triumph in the King George VI Chase but unseated Sam Thomas at the final obstacle when mounting his challenge in last year’s race, allowing Snoopy Loopy to get the better of Tamarinbleu in a thrilling finish.

After bouncing back to form with a third success in the King George VI Chase, Kauto Star ensured his place in the history books by becoming the first horse ever to regain the Cheltenham Gold Cup, exacting revenge over the previous year’s winner Denman.

Smith commented: “Kauto Star is in very good form at the moment and Paul and myself are very happy with his preparation for the Betfair Chase. We had the option of going for the Down Royal Champion Chase but we believed that returning to Haydock Park was the right thing to do and it was only a question of keeping an eye on the weather and the ground.

“This will be the first time that he will going into the race as a fresh horse. He has run at Aintree and Down Royal the previous two seasons but we wanted to limit him to three appearances this year. He will start off in the Betfair Chase and then hopefully go back to Kempton and Cheltenham - although we have to get through each race at a time.

“I’m not worried about returning to Haydock Park after last year. He has won the race twice before and it was just a series of events that didn’t work out last season - it’s possible that his run at Down Royal may have taken the edge off him. I think that he is going to be all right this year and I am very happy with him.

“He’s nine now and has had a few races but he is a remarkable horse. People have always talked about French horses starting too young and therefore their careers end earlier than other horses but Kauto Star seems in great shape. He just seems to want to go on and he is certainly still thoroughly enjoying himself.”

A strong hand from the Ditcheat stable of the champion trainer is further enhanced by Denman, Grade Three scorer Nozic and last year’s Grade One RSA Chase sixth What A Friend, who is part-owned by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Nicholls may also be represented by My Will, who was fifth behind Kauto Star and Denman in last season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup before going on to end his campaign with a fine third behind the Venetia Williams-trained Mon Mome in the John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree.

Apart from Tamarinbleu, David Pipe could also rely on 2008 Grade One Ryanair Chase winner Our Vic and Madison Du Berlais, who got the better of the Charlie Mann-trained Air Force One in last year’s Hennessy Gold Cup before going on to Grade Two victories at Kempton and the totesport Bowl at Aintree.

Nigel Twiston-Davies has entered Imperial Commander, successful in last season’s Ryanair Chase, and recent recruit Roll Along, sixth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup for former handler Carl Llewellyn, while Nicky Henderson and the Queen may be represented by Barbers Shop, who easily scored in a Listed chase at Sandown before coming sixth behind Kauto Star at Cheltenham.

Monet’s Garden rolled back the years with a vintage display of jumping for trainer Nicky Richards in the Grade Two totetentofollow Old Roan Chase at Aintree last month and the 11-year-old chaser may re-oppose the second from that race, the Howard Johnson-trained Tidal Bay.

A strong potential Irish challenge includes the Jim Dreaper-trained Notre Pere, who stormed to victory on his only previous start in the UK in the Grade Three Welsh National. The eight-year-old soft-ground specialist triumphed in the Grade One Punchestown Gold Cup in April, beating Schindlers Hunt, from the stable of Dessie Hughes, by 13 lengths.

Other notable entries include 2006 Welsh National hero Halcon Genelardais, from the yard of Alan King, the Tom George-trained Nacarat, successful in the Grade Three Racing Post Chase at Kempton in February and Albertas Run, victorious in the 2008 Grade One RSA Chase at Cheltenham for trainer Jonjo O’Neill.

Betfair's Head Of Media, Tony Calvin, commented: "We are thrilled with the entries and the fact that 14 of the 26 are rated 160 or more by Timeform is a very impressive statistic. All the best staying chasers, with the exception of Voy Por Ustedes, have been given an entry and let's hope that many stand their ground.

"Kauto Star, who looks a probable starter once again, already has a hat-trick of King George wins under his belt, and this season could well see him repeat the feat in the other two Grade One staying chases in this country. He has already won two Betfair Chases and two Gold Cups, and to add to those successes would be an astonishing achievement."

A superb seven-race card on the first day of the Northwest Racing Masters also includes the £100,000 Listed Timeform Betfair Racing Club "Fixed Brush" Handicap Hurdle and the £50,000 Tune Into Timeform Radio Hurdle.

The second day of the Northwest Racing Masters at Aintree on Sunday, November 22, features two excellent contests over the world-famous Grand National course among six races, the £100,000 totesport.com Becher Chase and the £70,000 totesuper7 Grand Sefton Chase.
