HAYDOCK PARK, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2009
HAYDOCK PARK DELIGHTED WITH BETFAIR CHASE DAY CROWD
Today’s attendance came in at just under 10,000 people - right up there with Haydock Park’s expectations.
Dickon White, Haydock Park’s managing director, said: “It has been a fantastic day for jump racing at Haydock Park and a fantastic day for jump racing in the North of England.
“The development of our courses at Haydock Park has gone very well and we mean business in jump racing.
“The jump course is now fantastic and exactly where we want it to be. Kirkland Tellwright (the clerk of the course) and his team led by Maurice Crooks, the head groundsman, have done an amazing job.
“High-profile days like this are absolutely key to the future of the racecourse. Betfair have been very pleased with today and we have seen a jump racing legend in Kauto Star.”
ALL SET FAIR FOR AINTREE TOMORROW - DAY TWO OF THE NORTHWEST RACING MASTERS
Tomorrow sees the second day of the Northwest Racing Masters take place at Aintree, with the two main races of the day both over the Grand National fences - the £70,000 totesuper7 Grand Sefton Chase (12.35pm) and the £100,000 Listed totesport.com Becher Chase (1.45pm). This is the only date in the racing calendar when there are two races over the Grand National fences on the same afternoon.
After a dry night, the going at Aintree is currently:
MILDMAY AND HURDLE COURSES - GOOD TO SOFT
GRAND NATIONAL COURSE - GOOD TO SOFT, SOFT IN PLACES
Aintree’s Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing, Andrew Tulloch, commented this morning: “Rain is expected to arrive at Aintree later this morning through to the evening, before clearing. Between 6 and 10 millimetres is expected, so that could obviously have an effect on the going.
“Sunday is forecast to begin with a cloudy start and showers, some of which may be heavy, and these could again ease the ground.
“Everything is in great shape at Aintree and we are all set for tomorrow.”
Race 6 - Betfair Chase - Winning Quotes
“HE NEEDED IT” - THE THREE WORDS I WANTED TO HEAR SAYS PAUL NICHOLLS
Kauto Star, partnered by Ruby Walsh, clinched his third victory in the £200,000 Grade One Betfar Chase at Haydock Park today, but connections had to wait for the judge to determine a photo finish after Imperial Commander came with a final late thrust near the line.
From some way out it looked as if the race was between Imperial Commander and Kauto Star, with the latter asserting a clear advantage approaching the penultimate fence. While he looked to have the race in the bag, 4/6 favourite Kauto Star had to dig deep to hold off a renewed challenge from Imperial Commander and just a nose separated the pair at the finish.
Trainer Paul Nicholls reported: “Ruby (Walsh) got off him and said ‘he needed it’ - they were the three words I wanted to hear.
“He has just got a little bit tired today but he kept finding. He is a real professional.
“Of the three races he is going to have this season, today was always going to be the day he was least forward. Our horses have just took a bit longer to come to hand this year and we couldn’t have taken him to the King George without a run beforehand,
“I was not worried about the ground today. I was more worried about the fact that he might need the race.
“Nigel’s horse (Imperial Commander) has run very well. I feared him as Nigel’s horses go so well fresh. I didn’t know whether we had won on the line, all I knew was that he had run a great race whatever happened.
“I have learnt over the year that horses need their first run. When you see this horse at his age putting his head down in his chest and fighting like that it’s just great. Today was a great spectacle for the sport.
“This week has been one of the most nerve-wracking weeks of my life. We had to run him today but there was all the talk about the ground and as I said, it’s hard to get horses fit for their first outing.”
Kauto Star, owned by Clive Smith, previously won the Betfair Chase in 2006 and 2007. He fell at the last when disputing the lead in 2008. He also won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2007 and 2009, while he has taken the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on three occasions (2006, 2007 and 2008).
Kato Star remains the 10/11 favourite for the King George VI Chase with totesport, while he is also unchanged at 6/4 with the same firm for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

AS GOOD A HORSE AS WE HAVE EVER SEEN - WALSH
Ruby Walsh, the winning rider on Kauto Star in the Betfair Chase, said afterwards: “I thought I had to go at Imperial Commander (entering the straight) - he was the doubtful stayer - we had won the Gold Cup.
“Kauto Star just got tired going to the last and then he has dug deep to hang on.
“I thought I was beaten but Kauto Star came back. He has won anyway. I thought Imperial Commander got by me for a stride and I was back ahead a stride later.
“I was thinking I had used up my gas too early when Kauto Star got a bit tired coming to the last but that was the decision I had made by taking on Imperial Commander.
“My tactical decision was to test Imperial Commander’s stamina and it just paid off - I thought it wasn’t going to for a time.
“The ground probably took it out of him a bit - I know he is a better horse on better ground but I have been saying to Paul (Nicholls - the trainer) all week that good horses win on any ground.
“Kauto Star is as good as last season - he is a wonderful horse - how many Grade Ones is that now ? (12) They were still knocking him in the paper all last week - it is like Manchester United - when you are on the top they want to knock you.
“He is as good a horse as we have ever seen and we need to start appreciating him.”

SECOND AND THIRD IN THE BETFAIR CHASE
Nigel Twiston-Davies, trainer of the second Imperial Commander, was devastated by the result and so was the jockey Paddy Brennan - getting beat by a nose when looking all over the winner.
Twiston-Davies commented: “It is horrible but Imperial Commander did bloody well.
“From every angle I saw, he had got it but there you are. I am sure the camera doesn’t lie. He has run a hell of a race.
“We will keep trying at all the top races. We have to think whether we go back to the King George or not - I don’t know. He obviously prefers this way around (left-handed).
“All the so-called experts said he couldn’t stay but how couldn’t he. He won around 2m 5f in the Paddy Power on soft ground ane he was powering up the hill. If this had been three miles, two furlongs, he would have won easily. Bring on the Gold Cup.
“The King George - where else is there to go? Unless someone gives me a nice left-handed race then we have to do that.
“I have got to talk to the owners. The Letheby & Christopher at Cheltenham towards the end of January is probably better than the Aon Chase for us.“
David Pipe said about Madison Deu Berlais, the third: “It was a good first run back - I don’t know why but he always improves for his first run.”
JOCKEYS QUOTES AFTER THE BETFAIR STEEPLE CHASE
Tom Scudamore, rider of the third placed Madison Du Berlais, said: “He’s run a great race. His first time out record wouldn’t be that great, he normally improves for a race, but he’s still run a great race. He’s been beaten by two very very good horses.
“As far I know we will look forward to the King George (Kempton Park).”
Andrew Lynch, on board Notre Pere, said, after the 4/1 second favourite could do no better than a distant fifth, “ It is disappointing he never really travelled, we weren’t going quick. I’d say he was feeling something, we will check when we get him home.”
IMMEDIATE REACTION PHIL SMITH - HEAD OF HANDICAPPING
Phil Smith, head of handicapping at the British Horseracing Authority, after a thrilling renewal of the Grade One Betfair Chase at Haydock Park today, said: “Kauto Star and Imperial Commander have come miles clear of anything else.
“Imperial Commander seems to have improved, while Kauto Star was probably not quite at his best. I will have a think about it.
“Imperial Commander might be the new Exotic Dancer - that sort of horse who is very good.
“But he happened to bump into Kauto Star who is very, very good.”
Race 1 - New Download At Betfair Casino Novices’ Hurdle - Winning Quotes
PERFECT START FOR NICHOLLS
The first day of the Northwest Racing Masters began perfectly for Kauto Star’s trainer Paul Nicholls when Pepe Simo was the comfortable winner of the opening New Download At Betfair Casino Novices’ Hurdle, a Listed contest over an extended two miles.
Partnered by Ruby Walsh, the five-year-old had Any Given Day in his sights from the home turn and quickened away impressively after the last to record a five-length success.
Paul Nicholls said of the 10/11 favourite: “He is a progressive horse.
“Coming here today was a bit of an afterthought to be honest, as I thought it might come a bit quick after his last race. I entered him on Monday and then when the race cut up we thought we might as well come here.
“We will now give him a month off and go for the Tolworth Hurdle at Sandown just after Christmas. After that, he will then have a holiday and we will bring him back and aim him at the best races in the spring.
“He is the sort of horse that doesn’t want to be in front too soon. He will be better when he races in a big field. He has lots of speed and will be given an entry in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.”
totesport make Pepe Simo 33/1 for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle while William Hill were more impressed and go 16/1.
Talking about the ground, Nicholls added: “Ruby (Walsh) thought the ground was not too bad.”

RUBY WALSH HAPPY WITH WINNER
“Pepe Simo is a nice horse. He is improving and I hope he keeps improving.
“The ground is soft, a bit heavy passing the stands, but not bad - it is the end of November.”
WALSH ONE-DAY WHIP BAN
The stewards asked Walsh about his use of the whip after the last. They found he had used his whip in the incorrect place and suspended him for one day - Sunday, December 6.
MCCAIN PLEASED WITH SECOND ANY GIVEN DAY
Donald McCain junior, trainer of the five-length second Any Given Day who took up the running entering the straight but had to give best on the run-in, said: “There are no excuses.
“Jason (Maguire - the rider) thinks Any Given Day has probably run his best race. We tried to stretch Pepe Simo but he has gone and done us well.
“We might step up Any Given Day to two and a half miles next time because he seemed to just keep galloping.
“He handled the ground which probably was not as soft as some people thought it might be.”
GOING AFTER THE FIRST RACE
Ruby Walsh, rider of the winner, the10/11favourite Pepe Simo, described the going as: “Soft, and a bit heavy in places.”
Jason Maguire, jockey of the five-length second, Any Given Day, thought the going: “Soft, I struggled to find the heavy places. Not bad at all.”
Paddy Brennan, rider of the third, Candle, said: “Soft, no worse.”
Michael McAlister, on Oddsmaker, said: “Quite dead.”
Paddy Aspell, partner of Quatro Pierji, said: “Soft, and dead.”
Race 2 - Betfair Mobile Handicap Chase - Winning Quotes
FIRST HAYDOCK WINNER FOR EWART WITH SA SUFFIT
Trainer James Ewart, who is based at Langholm in Scotland, enjoyed his first winner at Haydock Park when Sa Suffit was the game length and a half winner of the Betfair Mobile Handicap Chase.
The six-year-old was making his seasonal reappearance in the two-mile contest and was partnered to victory by 5lb conditional Harry Haynes.
James Ewart commented: “It’s difficult to come here first time out for a good race like this to Haydock - is he good enough, is he fit enough - but he has done it today and I am very proud of him and hopefully there will be more improvement to come. He still is only six.
“He is a horse that has improved and matured both mentally and physically since last year. When he had his first outing last year, he looked like a starved whippet and I couldn’t get weight on him.
“We have been giving him flax oil, sunflower oil and cod liver oil and that seems to have helped.
“Today he has carried a big weight and done it well, but I’m not sure how good the race was. I need advice as to where we go now with him.
“I think we have found his ideal trip though, which is two miles on soft ground on a stiff track. Cheltenham seems to be crying out for him. Hopefully we can find a two-mile handicap there for him.
“I worked for Guillaume Macaire for five years and his ex girl-friend, a permit holder in France - had the horse and he went off the rails - basically I picked up the pieces after buying him very cheaply.”
Race 3 - Tune Into Timeform Radio Hurdle -
Winning & Placed Quotes
THRILLER MAKES IT A THRILLER
Backers of Starluck were surely counting their money as the 5/2 chance looked to have the £50,000 Tune Into Timeform Radio Hurdle at his mercy after he took up the running shortly after the final flight, going a couple of lengths clear - after all one Betfair punter staked £12,000 at 1/100 in running.
However, the gutsy 8/15 favourite Mr Thriller, who had led for much of the two-mile contest, rallied and found a second wind to prevail by half a length under Tom Scudamore. Mr Thriller drifted to 99/1 in running with Betfair and was backed to £17 at that price.
Winning trainer David Pipe said: “The plan was to go out and a make it a test of stamina. It looked as if Starluck had it, but our fellow is a battler.
“He’s a half-brother to Gaspara and has always had a great attitude.
“Joe (Moran, owner) and I had a chat before today’s race and we weren’t entirely sure that the betting or the prices were correct today.
“He was dropping back half a mile and the main reason we came here today was for the soft ground. I would imagine we would look at stepping him up in trip again now. All he does is gallop and is a very gutsy horse - that’s what you need in this game.
“He will make a grand chaser in time but there are sure to be few hurdles to be won with him on the way.”
Trainer Alan Fleming said of the runner-up Starluck: “I think the ground was probably just a bit too soft for him today. It’s nothing ventured, nothing gained.
“We will now look at taking him to Kempton now, where hopefully conditions will be livelier.”
Jokingly, Fleming added: “I think Timmy (Murphy) held on to him for a bit too long!”
TOM SCUDAMORE SUSPENDED FOR ONE DAY
Tom Scudamore was asked about his use of whip after the third-last hurdle when winning the Tune Into Timefom Radio Hurdle on Mr Thriller.
The stewards decided he had used it with excessive frequency and suspended him for one day - Sunday, December 6.

PEDDLERS CROSS MAKES PERFECT DEBUT FOR McCAIN
Peddlers Cross, a winning Irish point-to-pointer who was sold for £100,000 at Brightwells sale at Cheltenham in April, made a perfect start for trainer Donald McCain in the Betfair Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.
Partnered by Jason Maguire, the four-year-old travelled well and after overhauling favourite 2/1 favourite Sure Josie Sure, ran on strongly to register a three-length success over Bescot Springs.
Donald McCain said of the 11/4 winner: “He’s a grand horse.
“We just came here hopeful, but he’s done it well.
“He had been working well at home, but got held up with a couple of little setbacks. He is a bit keen and has lit up at home on occasions.
“Jason (Maguire) just thought that the ground might be a bit soft for him today but he’s done it well. He was a bit keen today, but is still only a baby.
“I’m not sure where we go next but I’m not a huge fan of keeping horses in bumpers. He has schooled well and has won a point to point in Ireland.
“We have a lot of exciting young horses at the moment. It’s pressure, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I just hope I don’t make a mess of things!”
Race 5 - Timeform Betfair Racing Club “Fixed Brush” Handicap Hurdle - Winning Quotes
TOP WEIGHT NO PROBLEM FOR DIAMOND HARRY
Diamond Harry could not have been more impressive when taking the £100,000 Listed Timeform Betfair Racing Club “Fixed Brush” Handicap Hurdle in the hands of Timmy Murphy.
Depsite being burdened by top weight of 11st 12lb, the six-year-old travelled supremely well throughout and after taking a clear advantage ahead of the final obstacle, he proved two and a half lengths too strong for the favourite Burton Port. Diamond Harry was returned at 9/2.
Successful trainer Nick Williams said: “With his mark of 149, this race was an obvious target.
“People like to see top-class horses winning good races with top weight and he is a very exciting horse. I was confident coming into the race as he was very fit and well.
“Today was his first start against handicappers, rather than Grade One horses, so I think he was entitled to run a good race.”
Despite the ease of his win today, Williams is in no rush to identify the next target for Diamond Harry, who has the option of either the Ladbrokes World Hurdle or the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival later in the season.
Williams continued: “I don’t want to commit where he will go next. Both the RSA Chase and the World Hurdle are options for him this season. We will just keep an eye on the opposition.
“I made a mistake with him last year by not going for the three-mile novices’ hurdle. If he had run in that race, he could still be unbeaten.
“Will we just take each day as it comes.”
Totesport make Diamond Harry 7/1 (first show) for the World Hurdle, while for the RSA Chase the Wigan firm go 12/1 (from 16/1).

A PROPER HORSE SAYS TIMMY
The winner Diamond Harry scored most impressively under top-weight of 11st 12lb in the £100,000 Timeform Betfair Racing Club “Fixed Brush” Handicap Hurdle, cruising into the lead two out and winning hard held.
The winning jockey Timmy Murphy said: “I was very impressed.
“He is a proper racehorse - he is. The only doubt was because he was travelling too well.
“He was a bit keen all the way round and I could not get him to drop it (the bit). And yet he still picked up off that.
“Diamond Harry is a lovely horse and I knew he would pull out a bit more in the straight if necessary.”

SHINING GALE SHINES THROUGH
The 7/2 favourite, Shining Gale, who finished a brave head winner after sustaining an injury and pulling up lame after the post, had to survive a lengthy stewards enquiry into possible interference with the second, Kia Kaha in the concluding Betfair Racing Multiples Handicap Chase.
When the announcement came that the placings were to remain unaltered Charlie Mann, trainer of the winner, commented: “It’s just upsetting that he got hurt, obviously we would rather have finished second and in one piece than like this.
“He has hung because he is lame, it could be a fracture or a tendon I don’t really know. It’s off to the vets when we get home.
“I hope it is a fracture rather than a tendon because it won’t take as long to heal.”
PAUL NICHOLLS PLEASED WITH KAUTO STAR
Paul Nicholls, trainer of the leading chaser Kauto Star who is going for his third Betfair Chase victory today, told Channel 4's Morning Line this morning: “We have not done anything different with him this year. The idea was to keep him fresh for whatever race we ran in.
“That is why we opted to go here fresh rather than run in Ireland and everything has been fine with him.
“Clive (Smith - the owner of Kauto Star) was keen to go to the Betfair Chase rather than Down Royal and so the race has been the main aim.
“We have got to start somewhere - it is easy leaving him in his box all of the time - and he is not going to have that many runs this season. There are five weeks to Kempton and he has run in this race every year before he won the King George.
“They cannot win every day and they don’t always get their optimum ground every time. His main two big targets are the King George and the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
“Master Minded’s targets are the Tingle Creek and the Champion Chase. He needed the run last week - we knew that and he ran like it.
“Kauto is a lot straighter. He is a different type of horse. You could say that a lot of things are not in his favour today but he is very fresh and very, very fit.
“No matter what you think at home, until you run them on the day, you don’t really know for sure.”
GOING NEWS
The going for day one of the Northwest Racing Masters at Haydock Park today is:
SOFT, HEAVY IN PLACES
(GoingStick readings - Chase Course: 5.3; Hurdle Course 6.1)
Kirkland Tellwright, Clerk of the Course at Haydock Park, reported this morning: “There was no rain overnight and the going remains soft, heavy in places.
“Rain is forecast to arrive later today but we are all set for what promises to be a great day’s racing.”

CONWAY HOPING FOR THE BEST FROM PERE
Jarlath Conway, son of owners Pat and Tillie Conway, is looking forward to this afternoon’s feature race, the £200,000 Betfair Chase (2.55pm), where the family will be represented by Notre Pere. Notre Pere, who is trained by Jim Dreaper in Ireland, made great strides last season winning the Welsh National at Chepstow and ending the campaign with a Grade One success at Punchestown in April.
Conway said today: “We have had runners at Haydock before over hurdles, but Notre Pere is a different class of horse to those.
“He is a very willing horse and always does his best. We are hopeful of a good run today.”
Notre Pere fell on his reappearance in a Grade One contest at Down Royal on November 7, but Conway puts that down to an unfortunate turn of events.
He continued: “Andrew (Lynch, jockey) said the slow pace at Down Royal didn’t suit him. It had also rained before the race, making it very slippery as there was water lying on top. He went to do one of his spectacular leaps and has just slipped. These things happen in racing.
“Fortunately, he came out of the Down Royal race in great form and ate up well.”
Conway is very realistic as to the challenge Notre Pere faces today. He said: “You have a dual Gold Cup winner (Kauto Star), who is exceptional, and a Hennessy winner (Madison Du Berlais) in the line-up today, and you would also have to respect the chance of Imperial Commander as he goes so well fresh.
“Whatever happens, happens. This horse owes us nothing. He won three big races last season and I think on official ratings he improved 26lb. He has put himself into this bracket and so deserves to take his chance. We had the option of waiting for the Hennessy next week, but he would have had 11st 6lb there and there are some good horses in that race just above 10 stone.”
Looking ahead to later in the season, Conway thinks Cheltenham may play to Notre Pere’s strengths: “If the going was yielding or on the soft side of good, then I think Cheltenham should suit him.
“We will try and aim him at the Gold Cup but there is a long way to go before then.”
KAUTO STAR BACKED - NOTRE PERE DRIFTED ON BETFAIR
With no rain overnight at Haydock Park and showers holding off so far today (11.50am), the main impetus on Betfair for today’s thrilling £200,000 Betfair Chase has been the support for Kauto Star and opposition to Notre Pere.
Kauto Star has been backed into 1.94 (around 10/11) from 2.26 (about 5/4) from yesterday evening, while Notre Pere has drifted to 4.4 (just under 7/2) from 3.1 (over 2/1).
Tony Calvin, Betfair’s Head of Media, said: “The longer the rain stays away, the longer Notre Pere’s price will be and the shorter Kauto Star’s odds.”

Winning Trainer: PAUL NICHOLLS Date of birth: 17/05/62 Based: Heighes House, Manor Farm Stables, Ditcheat, Shepton Mallet, Somerset Background: Paul Nicholls, the son of a policeman, was born in Olveston, Bristol, on April 17, 1962, and has been training at Manor Farm Stables in Ditcheat, Somerset, since taking out a licence on November 1, 1991. He started out as a jump jockey and twice rode the winner of the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury, in 1986 and 1987. He partnered 130 winners between 1980 and 1989, and nominates the best horses he rode as Broadheath, Playschool and Seagram. Between 1989 and 1991, he was assistant trainer to former Devon-based David Barons, who sent out Seagram to win the 1991 Grand National at Aintree during that time. Having strongly challenged Martin Pipe for the jump trainers’ championship for several years, most notably when pushing his great rival right to the last day of the 2004/05 campaign, he claimed his first title in the 2005/06 season. Nicholls pulled off the amazing feat of saddling seven winners and three seconds from his 10 runners on Saturday, November 7, 1998, and made history when he became the first trainer to saddle six winners on the same card, at Wincanton, his local track, on Saturday, January 21, 2006. Winning Jockey: Ruby Walsh Born: May 14, 1979 Background: Ruby (short for Rupert) is associated with the powerful stables of Paul Nicholls in Britain and Willie Mullins in Ireland. He is the son of 11-times Irish amateur champion jockey, Ted Walsh, now a trainer and television pundit. Ruby is the second of Walsh's four children and his younger sister Katie is a successful amateur. He secured his first success under Rules aboard Siren Song at Gowran Park on July 25, 1995, and followed in his father's footsteps when capturing the Irish amateur riders’ championship (1996-97) at the age of 19 while still studying for his Leaving Certificate. He was crowned champion Irish National Hunt jockey in his first season as a professional (1998/99) and has taken the title a further five times (2000/2001, 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/7 and 2007/08). Walsh has won the John Smith's Grand National twice. His first success came in 2000 on his first ride in the race aboard Papillon, trained by his father, less than a month after returning from a fractured leg sustained in a fall in October, 1999, in the Czech Republic. The Willie Mullins-trained Hedgehunter provided him with a second success in 2005 and the pair finished a creditable runner-up in 2006. He followed Papillon's Aintree triumph with an Irish Grand National victory aboard his father's Commanche Court but surpassed that achievement in the 2004/2005 season when his John Smith's Grand National success aboard Hedgehunter was augmented by wins in the Welsh National (Silver Birch) and Irish Grand National (Numbersixvalverde). He narrowly missed out in that season's Scottish Grand National when his mount, Cornish Rebel, finished a short-head second to Joes Edge. In the 2007/08 season he was leading rider at the Cheltenham Festival for a third time (he also took the accolade in 2003 and 2007) with three wins aboard Fiveforthree in the Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle, Celestial Halo in the JCB Triumph Hurdle and Master Minded in the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase. Donald learnt to ride on his sister Joanne’s pony Gambol and rode in his first race on the Flat aged 15 (his father told a few white lies so he could ride) at Haydock Park. He subsequently became a jump jockey, firstly as an amateur and then a professional, riding around 40 winners under Rules. He rode several times over the Grand National fences, finishing fifth aboard Harley in the 1992 Fox Hunters’ Chase and 17th on Sure Metal in the 1996 Grand National. He also spent time working in the stables of Luca Cumani, Sir Michael Stoute and Oliver Sherwood. Donald subsequently became assistant trainer to his father at Bankhouse Stables at Cholmondeley in Cheshire and played a significant role in Amberleigh House’s Grand National victory in 2004. He was expected to take over the licence from his father at the start of the 2006/7 jump season, but had to wait until June, 2006, before he was able to train in his own name as he needed to complete the appropriate British Horseracing Authority courses. Donald’s first winner as a licensed trainer came with Bearaway in a handicap chase at Newton Abbot on June 8, 2006. He secured his first Cheltenham Festival triumph with Cloudy Lane in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase in his first season when he had 40 winners and had a second Festival success in 2008 via Whiteoak in the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle.
