Malton trainer Malcolm Jefferson is hoping that Roman Ark will line up in the £150,000 Boylepsorts.com Gold Cup (2.40pm), run over two miles and five furlongs at Cheltenham on Saturday, December 15, the second day of the Boylesports International.
Currently rated a 14/1 chance with Boylesports, Roman Ark made a winning seasonal reappearance at Haydock Park on November 24 in a two-mile handicap chase, when he defied top-weight of 11st 12lb to record a comfortable three-length success over Some Touch.
Jefferson said today: “There is a good chance Roman Ark will go for the Boylesports.com Gold Cup if everything is in his favour.
“The main consideration is the ground - the softer the better for him.
“He looks to me as if he has come out of Haydock very well and he is just taking it easy at the moment before he starts cantering again next week. The horse looks great and doesn’t seem to have lost any weight since Haydock.
“So I think, if everything is right, then the Boylesports.com Gold Cup is where we will go with him.”
The nine-year-old Terimon gelding has posted some very good efforts at Cheltenham in the past, most notably when fourth to Non So in the Grade Three Racing Post Plate over the same distance of two miles and five furlongs at The Festival in 2006 and when fourth behind Whispered Secret (also entered in the Boylesports.com Gold Cup) in the Grade Three Ladbrokes Trophy, also run over two miles and five furlongs, on Festival Trials Day in January, 2007.
Jefferson continued: “In the Ladbrokes Trophy, four fences were missed out (because of low sun on the day impairing visibility) and I think that cost him the race as he jumps so well. He was in great fettle that day and it was very soft. The ground is worth a lot to him.
“You don’t have many options for a horse like Roman Ark, when they are up in the handicap. You have to go where you can run.
“The thing is, he is a very good horse and, if everything was in his favour, he might have a big chance in a race like the Boylesports.com Gold Cup.”
A total of 45 entries have been received for the Boylesports.com Gold Cup, including the first seven horses home from the Paddy Power Gold Cup - L’Antartique, Il Duce, Knowhere, Palarshan, Patman Du Charmil, Bob Hall and Copsale Lad.
Weights for the £150,000 contest will be revealed on Wednesday, December 5.
