THE OPEN 2007 - CHELTENHAM
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
COUNTRYSIDE DAY, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2007

RECORD CROWD ON COUNTRYSIDE DAY

A new record crowd of 22,351 was seen for the Friday of The Open, Countryside Day, at Cheltenham today.

The previous record for the day came last year when 21,505 attended.

GUINNESS MOMENT

There is a Guinness Moment on each day of The Open.

The shortlist for today, as chosen by a panel of journalists, is Spot Thedifference (A), Graham Lee (B) and Katie Walsh (C).

People vote for the winner by texting “moment” followed by A, B or C to 80818.

GOING STILL GOOD

The going at Cheltenham remains GOOD on the Chase & Hurdle Courses following the first day of The Open 2007.

Simon Claisse, Cheltenham’s Clerk of the Course & Director of Racing, said: “The forecast is for the weather to be fine overnight with temperatures getting down to minus one degrees Celsius.

“Tomorrow is also forecast to be dry, with some weak sunshine followed by cloudier conditions.

“The jockeys reported the ground to be just on the easy side of good and that is what we were aiming for.

“All credit must go to the groundstaff at Cheltenham who for the second meeting in a row have had to work hard to produce safe jumping ground, which has been difficult given the lack of recent rain.”

Race 1 - Royal Bank Of Canada Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle - Winning Quotes

ELLIOTT OPENS CHELTENHAM ACCOUNT

Irish trainer Gordon Elliott, who won the 2007 John Smith’s Grand National at Aintree with Silver Birch, saddled his first winner at Cheltenham when Newton Bridge collected the opening race of The Open 2007, the Royal Bank Of Canada Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.

Newton Point was Elliott’s first winner at Cheltenham as a trainer, although he did saddle Silver Birch to finish second in the Cross Country Chase at The Festival last season and as a jockey won the amateur riders’ handicap chase on Iris Bleu at The Open in 2002.

The 11/1 winner was partnered to victory by Joey Elliott, the trainer’s brother, and travelled well throughout, asserting after the last to score by three lengths from Peacock.

Gordon Elliott said: “I am delighted to have had my first winner at Cheltenham. We went close last year when Silver Birch was second in the Cross Country Chase.

“He was declared to run at Uttoxeter tomorrow, but that was only if something happened today and he definitely won’t be going there.

“Newton Bridge will have a break through the winter now and will come back in the spring.

“He must have this nice ground and we could look at something like the Topham Chase at Aintree for him. He could also maybe run in one of the handicap hurdles at The Festival.

“He jumps very well and is also a very versatile horse.”

RIDERS GIVE THUMBS UP TO CHELTENHAM GOING

Riders who took part in the first race at this year’s Open Meeting, the Royal Bank of Canada Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, were generally happy with the going.

Joey Elliott, who rode the winner Newton Bridge, said: “It’s patchy, a little bit slow in places, but generally good.

David England, who partnered runner-up Peacock, said: “It’s good, but they are definitely getting their toe in.”

Robbie Colgan said: “It’s lovely good ground.”

Ryan Cummings said: “It’s good ground, but sticky down the back where the frost got in.”

Gerard Tumelty said: “It’s lovely ground, and there’s a little bit of juice in it.”

Sean Quinlan said: “It’s dead ground.”

Tom Malone said: “It’s good to firm, but it’s got some dig in it.”

Andrew Lynch said: “It’s slightly false, because it’s quick, but loose on top.”

Liam Treadwell said: “It’s good ground. Lovely.”

Race 2 - paddypower.com Graduation Chase
Winner’s Quotes

RUN OF THE MILL PROVES SPOT ON

Henrietta Knight and Graham Lee combined to win paddypower.com Graduation Chase over three miles and half a furlong with Glasker Mill, who got up close home to win by a short-head and defeat his five rivals.

Glasker Mill fell twice last season, and was last seen over hurdles, but he was given a fine ride by Lee in today’s race, as Knight acknowledged.

Knight said: “He’s been schooled every day this week and Graham came down to ride him, because we had a lot of troubles with his jumping last season.

“Glasker Mill jumped 16 fences yesterday and I wasn’t sure whether we would get away with it.

“He’s always had ability and won a point-to-point as a four-year-old - I was thinking of the Royal & SunAlliance Chase here for him at one time because we know he stays well.

“He terrified himself the first time he fell and on the second occasion he just shut his eyes and didn’t take off at all. He had two crashing falls so we had to go back to basics.

“We had to come here because there are so few races for him to run in. He’s too high in the handicap - but I love Cheltenham fences because they are very fair. They are fairer here than any track in the country, and they have room, so horses can see what they are doing.

“He’s not in the Hennessy [Cognac Gold Cup] because I didn’t think of putting him in. He tends to run fresh and win first time out, so perhaps I’ll retire him for the season!”

OFAREL D’AIRY JUST TOUCHED OFF

The 15/8 favourite Ofarel D’Airy was just touched off in the second race of the day, going down by a short-head to Glasker Mill in the paddypower.com Graduation Chase.

Trainer Paul Nicholls said: “He was just a bit careful with his jumping today. I was a little bit worried when he jumped the last with his ears pricked.

“I thought we might just have it on the run-in. He has probably just hit the front a fraction too soon.

“It’s just one of those things. I don’t know where he will go next next.”

KATIE WALSH GAINS SUCCESS AT CHELTENHAM

Amateur rider Katie Walsh enjoyed her first British success on Hordago in the Beards The Jewellers Cup at Cheltenham today.

The 22-year-old daughter of Ted Walsh and brother of top professional jockey Ruby Walsh has partnered over 50 winners in Ireland, mainly in National Hunt Flat races.

Katie Walsh said: “Hordago helped me all the way, he’s really brave this horse. He travelled as well as we thought he would. I just cannot believe it (riding a winner at Cheltenham).

“It doesn’t matter whether it is the November meeting, December or March, Cheltenham is the place to ride winners, isn’t it? I am just delighted to ride a winner here whatever time of year.

“He wasn’t even starting to tire up the hill - he just wasn’t doing his stuff.”

Ruby Walsh commented: “That was brilliant for her. She works her heart out. It is great. Dad is here but Mam is at home and I think she will be in tears.”

Ted Walsh, a top amateur rider before concentrating on training, added: “It is marvellous. Anybody who is a parent will know what I am feeling. Katie is the baby of the family and my heart was in my mouth.

“It is what she wants to do. It is great thrill to ride a winner at Cheltenham - there is nothing like it and she will remember this day for the rest of her life.”

Race 3 - Beards The Jewellers Cup - Winning Quotes

THIRD OPEN WIN FOR HORDAGO

Hordago won at The Open for the third time when landing the Beards The Jewellers Cup, a handicap chase for amateur riders, giving jockey Katie Walsh (sister of Ruby Walsh) her first Cheltenham winner.

The winning jockey was in tears as she returned to an emotional winner’s enclosure where her overjoyed father Ted was present.

The 6/1 winner collected the conditional jockeys’ handicap hurdle in 2004 and the intermediate handicap hurdle at The Open in 2005, as well as finishing runner-up in the 2006 Pertemps Final at The Festival.

Eric McNamara, the winning trainer, said: “Katie gave Hordago a great ride and he has been a very lucky horse for us.

“He has won twice at Cheltenham before and finished second in a Pertemps Final.

“This place obviously switches him on - he loves it.

“Katie had a ride for me at Limerick earlier this week and I asked her if she’d like to ride Hordago today and she said she would be delighted to - there was no hesitation at all from her.

“I think we have to come back to The Festival again with him now. The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Chase could be an option.

“We put the blinkers back on him today - it just switched him on.”

Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Chase on Openide’s agenda

Trainer Brendan Duke is eyeing a race at next year’s Cheltenham Festival for Openide, who finished third in the Beards The Jewellers Cup for amateur riders.

Richard O’Sullivan could retain the ride in the Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Chase, said Duke, adding: “So long as he keeps telling me the right things!”

Duke added: “I’m delighted with his run. It was a cracking run and a cracking ride. Now I’ll be minding him and sleeping with him until the Kim Muir.

“He’s more of a spring horse so we’ll be patient.”

Carmarthenshire trainer Alison Thorpe was pleased with the ride Brian Toomey gave her horse, Henry’s Pride, a strapping chesnut who finished second and at seven can improve with age.

Thorpe said: “Brian had never ridden the horse before, but in amateur races it’s about finding one who can do the weight. He’s based with Brendan Powell and was recommended by agent Dave Roberts.

“I think a lot of Henry’s Pride - he’s been with us since the summer and could be a decent horse. He needs time between races, so we’ll look for the right race on the right track when the time is right.”

Race 4 - BGC Cross Country Chase
Winner’s Quotes

Rise and fall makes Spot The difference

Spot Thedifference took his many fans (and the whole of racing) to hell and back during a fabulous performance at Cheltenham today.

The 14-year-old showed the courage of a gladiator to fight back on the run-in after being headed in the home straight by runner-up Casadei, but then crashed to the floor soon after the winning post. For a few seconds it appeared the old warrior’s heart had given all and been sacrificed in the struggle, but he was soon back on his feet.

He was given a tremendous reception on his way back to the winner’s enclosure, where rider J T McNamara explained: “I was going so fast past the winning post that when I went to pull up he simply slipped and lost his footing on the bend.”

This was Spot Thedifference’s fourth win in this race, and his seventh at Cheltenham, all in cross-country races.

Winning trainer Enda Bolger was almost overwhelmed with emotion, but said: “It was a worrying few moments when he went down, but he simply slipped. This matches and beats his win in the La Touche Cup [at Punchestown in April]. He was given a great ride by a great jockey.

“Turning in I could see the other horse had first run on us, but our fellow is an amazing horse and when he gets to the last hurdle here he just flies. That’s his forte - he’s never been beaten around here when he gets into a fight.”

Winning the BGC Cross Country Chase at The Festival invariably proves more difficult for Spot Thedifference, because it is a handicap, and he will get no respite after today’s gigantic effort. Bolger said: “Today was the plan, and we’re not looking too far ahead - it’s just one day at a time.”

Owner J P McManus said: “I love all my horses, but this one has a special place in everybody’s heart. He only really came to life at 10 or 11, but thank goodness for cross-country races because they give horses like him a second career.”

McCOURT & PIPE HAPPY - AUCLAIR UNLUCKY

Trainer Tom McCourt was more than satisfied with the effort of Casadei, who belied his 66/1 odds to finish second, beaten a length, to Spot Thedifference in the BGC Cross Country Chase.

The County Meath handler commented: “He landed good over the last but you always know the winner is going to be hard to beat up the Cheltenham hill!

“I am delighted with his performance and we will look to come for the Cross County Chase at The Festival with him.

“With that race being a handicap, he might struggle to get in, although I expect he will get a fair hike in the ratings for his run today.

“Casadei is a horse that loves jumping and jumped from fence to fence today - he really enjoyed it out there.”

A further two lengths back in third was Puntal, who took the wrong course before rejoining the race (for which his jockey Noel Fehily incurred a 12-day ban) and his trainer David Pipe said: “Puntal has run a brilliant race.

“He has taken the wrong course and rejoined the race and still finished third.

“I don’t know where he would go next. He could maybe go to for the National again - his owner (Terry Neill) loves Aintree.”

Royal Auclair finished fourth, a further five lengths back and his jockey Liam Heard was left wondering what might have been.

He said: “I lost between seven and 10 lengths approaching the final bend when a loose horse baulked him.

“He then stayed on and hasn’t been beaten that far.”

David England, rider of fifth Florida Dream, was also banned for 12 days for taking the wrong course early on, though Oliver Dayman, partner of Happy Hussar, the third horse to go wrong, escaped punishment as he was deemed to have been carried out.

Race 5 - Anglo Irish Bank Private Banking Novices’ Hurdle - Winning Quotes

NICHOLLS SLIGHTLY SURPRISED AT BLUES SUCCESS

Champion trainer Paul Nicholls was slightly surprised with the success of 14/1 shot I’msingingtheblues in the Grade Two Anglo Irish Bank Private Banking Novices’ Hurdle as the five-year-old recorded a half-length success.

The winner stayed on well to overhaul longtime leader Snap Tie, running on resolutely up the Cheltenham hill.

Paul Nicholls said: “This horse is still quite green. He had only run on a Flat track before today as he was a bit too keen and enthusiastic.

“He settled better today in this better race. It was a big step up in class today, but I told John Hales (owner of I’msingingtheblues) that I thought it was worth a chance to run today.

“I think he could improve again and is certainly going in the right direction. He is still learning and could be better on a flatter track.”

As to future targets, Nicholls said: “I was a bit gobsmakcked he won today but it is a pleasant surprise to win a Grade Two.

“I hadn’t really thought about much beyond today’s race for him but I think there could be a suitable race for him - a National Hunt novices’ hurdle - here next month (at the Boylesports International meeting).

Paddy Power have introduced I’msingingtheblues at 16/1 for the Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle and 20/1 for the Anglo Irish Bank Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at The Festival. Snap Tie is a 25/1 with Paddy Power for the Anglo Irish Bank Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. Boylesports quote I’msingingtheblues at 25/1 for the Ango Irish Bank Supreme Novices’ Hurdle while Stan James go 20/1. Cashmans quote I’msingingtheblues at 16/1 for the Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle.

Last hurdle error no help to Tie

Five-year-old Snap Tie had his rivals at full stretch running to the final flight, but an awkward jump and flat-footed landing hampered his impetus, and I’msingingtheblues stormed ahead for victory in the Grade Two Anglo Irish Bank Private Banking Novices’ Hurdle.

Trainer Philip Hobbs said: “With a young horse having only his second run over hurdles it’s not ideal to be in front, but we wanted to make sure there was enough pace.

“At the last Richard [Johnson] knew that if he went long he would have to go very long, and he was probably wise to take the safe option. He was still in front after the last and someone said to me, ‘your horse has won,’ but it’s a long way up the hill here and I was not confident.

“I’m still very happy with the horse and think he’s very decent, but I’ve got no plans for him.”

Somerset-based Hobbs also had news of The Grey Berry, who he and bloodstock agent Aiden Murphy bought at Tattersalls’ Horses-in-Training Sale recently for 340,000gns, a record at that event for a potential jumper.

Hobb said: “He’s settling in fine and he’s jumped some baby hurdles at home.”

Race 6 - Steel Plate And Sections Novices’ Chase
Winner’s Quotes

Commander imperial in final-race romp

The Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Imperial Commander won the Steel Plate And Sections Novices’ Chase in fine style.

A strapping bay gelding, the six-year-old motored clear from the final bend under Tony Evans, and looks a horse who could be worth following.

Twiston-Davies said: “It’s wasn’t much of a race, but we’ve had so much bad luck today - we could have had a four-timer, but one winner is always good.

“He’ll be better over further and he loves galloping and jumping. We will probably bring him back here for the next meeting [14 & 15 December] for a race over two and a half or three miles.”

Imperial Commander’s fine physique is tarnished by old scars on his knees. Twiston-Davies’s head lad, Fergal O’Brien, who also trains a string of ten pointers, said: “He won a good point-to-point in Ireland, but fell down on the road while he was over there and cut his knees quite badly.

“They have healed and it doesn’t affect him - he’s a lovely, stamp of chaser and a kind horse, too.”

GOING NEWS AT 10AM

The going for the first day of The Open 2007 is:

GOOD on the Chase & Hurdle Courses

GOOD TO FIRM on the Cross Country Course

Simon Claisse, Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Cheltenham, reported this morning: “The temperature went down to minus six Celsius last night although the frost was only on the grass and not in the ground.

“With the bright sunshine we are experiencing this morning, the course is thawing nicely.

“We continued selective watering up to yesterday. The weather hasn’t helped us in so far that we have had to continue watering right up to the meeting, but I am very pleased with the condition of the course.

“Some trainers came to walk the course yesterday and reported it to be in first-class condition.”

PADDY POWER MARKET MOVERS

This morning has been pretty quiet in the Paddy Power offices, although the firm reports money for three runners today.

In the opening Royal Bank Of Canada Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle (12.45pm), the Tony Martin-trained Top The Charts is in demand and is now 2/1 from 5/2.

Another horse from the Tony Martin stable, The Roney Man, is one of two horses for money in the Beards The Jewellers Cup Amateurs Riders’ Handicap Chase (1.55pm) and is 5/1 (from 6/1). In the same contest, Henry’s Pride, trained by Alison Thorpe, has come into 7/1 (from 8/1).
