SUPERB ENTRY OF 34 FOR SMURFIT KAPPA CHAMPION HURDLE
STEWART AND NICHOLLS SET TO BE DOUBLE-HANDED IN CHELTENHAM FEATURE
The previous four winners of the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle could all re-oppose at The Festival in March, with Hardy Eustace (2004 & 2005), Brave Inca (2006), Sublimity (2007) and last season’s champion Katchit among the 34 entries for this year’s race, the highlight of the first day of The Festival on Tuesday, March 10.
The extended two-mile contest is one of the few races to elude Paul Nicholls and this year the champion trainer looks set to rely on Celestial Halo and Rippling Ring, who both run in the famous red, white and black silks of the Stewart Family.
Celestial Halo’s first season over hurdles culminated with victory in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at The Festival last year and the five-year-old started the current campaign with a fine second to last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle runner-up and current ante-post Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle favourite Binocular in the Grade Two Boylesports.com International at Ascot last time out.
Rippling Ring also enjoyed a good first campaign over hurdles last season and was fifth in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at last year’s Festival on only his second appearance over hurdles.
Owner Andy Stewart revealed: “We have entered both Celestial Halo and Rippling Ring in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle and the plan at the moment is for both of them to run. We thought that Celestial Halo had to do the donkey work in the Boylesports.com International and set the race up for Binocular so we hope that Rippling Ring can set a strong pace at The Festival.
“Celestial Halo led from start to finish in the JCB Triumph Hurdle and he needs to go at a good gallop because he’s probably a two and a half miler around Cheltenham and a three miler elsewhere. He won’t run in the Irish Champion Hurdle, but he could make an appearance in the totepool Contenders Hurdle at Sandown on January 31.
“I was very impressed with Binocular and you can see why he’s a short-priced favourite for the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle, having beaten Celestial Halo by seven lengths at Aintree (in April) and then by four and a half lengths at Ascot in the Boylesports.com International.
“Even though it was Celestial Halo’s first run of the season, Binocular still looks the one to beat. It would be quite nice for (his owner) Mr McManus because when we beat Franchoek in the JCB Triumph Hurdle, he was the first person to congratulate me.
“I thought that Rippling Ring was going to win at the top of the hill in the Supreme Novices’ last season but he was tapped for toe in the closing stages. He has been entered to run at Ascot on Saturday, but he will only take his chance if the ground is very fast and he might go to Newbury for the totesport Trophy on February 7.”
Other notable entries for the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle include last year’s second and third Osana and Punjabi, Snap Tie, who lowered the colours of Katchit on his seasonal reappearance at Kempton, as well as Crack Away Jack and Ashkazar, who finished first and second in last season’s Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
A strong Irish challenge of 15 also includes Sizing Europe, successful in last season’s Irish Champion Hurdle, Grade One winners Jered, Catch Me, Harchibald and Won In The Dark, and the classy novice Hurricane Fly. The French entry is the Francois Doumen-trained Onnix, who was sixth in last year’s Pertemps Final at The Festival and is owned by Sir Michael Smurfit.

SMURFIT KAPPA CHAMPION HURDLE FACTS
1. The Champion Hurdle was inaugurated in 1927, with a value to the winner of £365. The race was abandoned in 1931 due to persistent frost, in 1943 and 1944 because of the Second World War, and in 2001 because of foot and mouth disease.
2. There have only been two sponsors of this great race since its inception. This statistic conceals a dramatic turn of events in 1990, when a major banking group, whose intended sponsorship was to raise the added value of the race by 66 per cent to £120,000, withdrew before its first running. The Smurfit Group stepped in at that point and has remained a loyal sponsor ever since. In 2009, the race will have total prize money of £370,000. Kappa was added to the title in 2006 to reflect the company’s new corporate identity.
3. The largest field has been 24 (1964 and 1991) and the smallest three (1932). The first five runnings of the race saw a total of only 24 runners between them. The current safety limit is 28.
4. The Champion Hurdle is a contest for multiple winners. Peter Easterby won the race most often as a trainer, with five victories from three horses, Saucy Kit (1967), Night Nurse (1976 and 1977) and Sea Pigeon (1980 and 1981). Vic Smyth and Fred Winter both had four wins, and a further five trainers have captured the hurdling crown on three occasions.
5. Among jockeys, Tim Molony won the race most often with four victories, on Hatton’s Grace (1951) and Sir Ken (1952, 1953 & 1954). Fred Winter, Jimmy Uttley, Steve Smith Eccles and most recently Charlie Swan were each successful three times.
6. The most successful owner is still Dorothy Paget, who won the race four times thanks to Insurance (1932, 1933), Solford (1940) and Distel (1946).
7. Istabraq, successful in the three Champion Hurdles from 1998 to 2000, was retired after failing to become the first horse to win the race four times in 2002. The four other three-time winners are Hatton’s Grace (1949-51), Sir Ken (1952-54), Persian War (1968-70) and See You Then (1985-87).
8. The race has been won seven times by entires, but only twice by mares - Dawn Run (1984) and Flakey Dove (1994).
9. Four greys have won, the most recent being Rooster Booster in 2003. The others were Kribensis in 1990, Victor Norman in 1936, and Our Hope in 1938. Only one roan horse has won the Champion Hurdle, Anzio in 1962.
10. Istabraq’s success in 2000 in a time of 3 minutes 48.1 seconds beat the previous Champion Hurdle record time, set by Make A Stand in 1997, of 3 minutes 48.4 seconds.
11. Dessie Hughes, who trained Hardy Eustace to win in 2004 and 2005, is only the fourth person to have both ridden and trained a Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle winner, having partnered Monksfield in 1979. The others to have achieved this double were Fred Winter, Fred Rimell and Gerry Wilson.

Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle - Analysis
The 2009 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle has attracted 34 entries, with 15 hailing from Ireland and one from France.
Among the entries this year are no less than four previous winners – Hardy Eustace (2004 and 2005), Brave Inca (2006), Sublimity (2007) and Katchit (2008). Hardy Eustace proved that he was no back number with victory in a Grade One contest at Punchestown in December while Brave Inca has returned from injury this season and has posted promising efforts when placed in Grade One contests at Fairyhouse and Leopardstown. Sublimity was an impressive winner of the Grade One December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown on December 29, when he had Won In The Dark in second place, Brave Inca third, Muirhead fourth, Sizing Europe fifth, Aitmatov sixth and Hardy Eustace seventh. Last year’s winner Katchit has failed to fire on his three starts so far this season but has often reserved his best for Cheltenham in the past.
Nicky Henderson famously landed three consecutive renewals of the Champion Hurdle with the great See You Then in 1985, 1986 and 1987. This time around, he looks to hold his strongest hand in the contest for many years with his five entries including the current ante-post favourite Binocular, runner-up in last year’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, who was so impressive when landing the Grade Two Boylesports.com International, which was run at Ascot on December 20 following the abandonment of Cheltenham the previous weekend. The master of Seven Barrows could also be represented by the 2007 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle third Afsoun, Aigle D’Or, runner-up in the Greatwood Hurdle at The Open in November, Punjabi, the impressive winner of the Grade One Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Wetherby earlier this season before falling two out in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton and Sentry Duty, who won the highly-competitive Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle at Ascot on December 20.
Osana only found Katchit a length too good last year and is one of two entries for David Pipe alongside Ashkazar. In addition to Katchit, other Festival winners from 2008 who could bid for further glory this time around are the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle hero Crack Away Jack, Celestial Halo, who collected the JCB Triumph Hurdle and Whiteoak, who landed the inaugural running of the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle.
Significant entries among the 15-strong Irish contingent also include the Edward O’Grady-trained Catch Me, successful on his last three starts including the Grade One Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, and the Cheltenham regular Harchibald. Harchibald, one of five entries for champion Irish trainer Noel Meade, has competed in two previous renewals, just getting edged out by Hardy Eustace when he was second in 2005 before finishing 10th last year. However, he showed that he retains plenty of ability with success in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton last month, beating Snap Tie by three quarters of a length. Meade could also be represented by Jered, a Grade One winner at Punchestown last season, Aitmatov, Jazz Messenger and Muirhead.
Two exciting novices that could take their chances are the Willie Mullins-trained Hurricane Fly, successful in Grade One company on his latest two starts and Dee Ee Williams from the Nick Gifford yard who was a short-head runner-up in Grade Two company at Ascot last month.
The French entry is the Francois Doumen-trained Onnix, who was sixth in last year’s Pertemps Final at The Festival and is owned by Sir Michael Smurfit.

RAPTOR RAZOR SHARP AHEAD OF WILLIAM HILL LINCOLN BID
BURKE TRIO AMONG 115 ENTRIES FOR THE WILLIAM HILL LINCOLN
The £125,000 William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday, March 28, is the prime early season target for the Karl Burke-trained Raptor, one of three entries for the Middleham handler among an entry of 115. That total marks an increase of one on the 114 horses entered at the initial stage in 2008.
There is a safety limit of 22 runners for the William Lincoln and the owners of horses that fail to make the cut have the option of declaring to run in the consolation race, the £50,000 William Hill Spring Mile.
Raptor, a Listed winner in Germany as a three-year-old and a 40/1 chance with William Hill, has contested the last two renewals of the William Hill Lincoln. The six-year-old made his debut for the trainer in the 2007 running of the prestigious mile handicap, which was staged at Newcastle while Doncaster racecourse underwent a stunning redevelopment.
Raptor finished fourth to Very Wise on his first attempt and, although unable to better that when 11th to Smokey Oakey in 2008, Burke believes his charge is now better than ever.
The trainer revealed today: “Raptor ran a very good race to finish fourth in the William Hill Lincoln - when it was run at Newcastle - on only his first run in this country after arriving from Germany. Last year, his preparation wasn’t quite as good and he disappointed a little bit. He also got quite badly hampered at the start which knocked him completely out of the race and that was probably the main reason he ran below expectations.
“This year, he’s physically in better shape than I’ve ever had him going into this time of the year and is a stone lighter than when he first arrived in the yard before finishing fourth. If I can get him there in top-class form, I think he goes there handicapped to have a major chance in the race, rather than just a hopeful chance.”
Burke could also be represented in the William Hill Lincoln by Philario, winner of the Group Three Sirenia Stakes at Kempton as a two-year-old and 33/1 hope with the sponsor. The Captain Rio colt ran well in sprints last season and showed a mile to be well within his scope when a head runner-up to Banknote over the distance at Lingfield on December 20.
Burke said: “Philario ran a great race at Lingfield when he was narrowly beaten behind Banknote on only his second run there. We are very pleased with him so entered him in the William Hill Lincoln, although he would not be a definite runner at this stage because he could go to Keeneland for their spring meeting. Having said that, we might consider running him in the Lincoln and then still go out there.
“He’s in good form and goes for a Listed race back at Kempton on February 8 - that will be his only run before the Lincoln or America. We kept him to sprinting and that probably wasn’t the right thing to do as he saw out the mile really well last time. He’s out of a Grand Lodge mare, so there’s stamina in there, and the trip shouldn’t be a problem for him if he goes to Doncaster.”
Electric Warrior completes Burke’s trio, although the trainer sees the six-year-old as more likely to line up for the William Hill Spring Mile, the consolation race for the William Hill Lincoln, which takes place over the course and distance also on Saturday, March 28.
He opined: “Electric Warrior is unlikely to get in the Lincoln so I’m thinking of the William Hill Spring Mile for him. He ran well at Kempton last time and is a consistent horse - he loves the all-weather. He goes to Doncaster fit, which could be an advantage for the Spring Mile.”
Newmarket trainer Mark Tompkins has entered last year’s winner Smokey Oakey as well as Alan Devonshire, while 2006 victor Blythe Knight has been engaged by trainer John Quinn.
Sir Michael Stoute won the William Hill Lincoln with Stream Of Gold in 2005 and could bid for a repeat with Decameron. Paul Cole is the most successful current trainer thanks to victories with Kuala Lips (1997) John Ferneley (2000) and Nimello (2001). He has entered Dubai Dynamo and the lightly-raced Pravda Street. David Barron saddled Amenable to win in 1991 and could rely on Flipando
Luca Cumani has entered Cambridgeshire third Swop, the 10/1 joint-favourite with William Hill, while William Haggas, successful with High Low (1992) and Very Wise (2007) has entered Roaring Forte.
Barry Hills set up as a trainer as a result of a major gamble on the victorious Frankincense in the 1968 Lincoln victory. The Lambourn trainer won the William Hill Lincoln with Pablo in 2003 and has entered Huzzah alongside Zaahid, who was fourth to the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Don’t Panic in the 2008 William Hill Spring Mile.
Dandy Nicholls has entered 10 of his charges including Royal Hunt Cup third Royal Power, Group Two UAE Derby runner-up Jack Junior, King’s Point and Fathsta.
Lady Deauville won a Group Three race over 10 furlongs at Hanover in November and has been entered by Roger Curtis, while David Pipe has engaged the former Sir Mark Prescott-trained Master Of Arts, unbeaten in his last six starts.
Group Three-placed Whistledownwind could line up for trainer Jeremy Noseda, while John Gosden has entered Charm School and the progressive Expresso Star who landed a hat-trick when winning at Nottingham in October and is the other 10/1 joint-favourite with William Hill.
Richard Fahey could run four including Benandonner, Bolodenka and Extraterrestrial. Kevin Ryan has eight entries headed by Cobo Bay, Majuro and Flawed Genius.
Jim Goldie saddled Nanton to take the runner-up spot in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket in October, while the Mick Channon-trained Eva’s Request landed a Listed race at Ascot in September.
Trainer Jonjo O’Neill and owner J P McManus, better known for their exploits at Cheltenham in March, have engaged Spectait, successful in the 2006 totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood when trained by Sir Mark Prescott and an easy winner at Wolverhampton on January 7.
The one Irish-trained entry is the Tony Mullins-trained Rock And Roll Kid, twice a winner over seven furlongs at the Curragh last season.
The weights for the William Hill Lincoln will be announced on Wednesday, January 21.
The Lincoln Meeting at Doncaster takes place this year on Saturday and Sunday, March 28 and 29.
