MAGIC SEASONS HOLIDAYS QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE IN PROSPECT - RECORD 57 IN FIRST GRADE ONE RYANAIR CHASE

Twist Magic heads a powerful four-strong entry for champion trainer Paul Nicholls in what promises to be an outstanding renewal of the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham on Wednesday, March 12.

The six-year-old most recently beat last year’s Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes in the paddypower.com Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown and could be joined in the £310,000 event by stablemates Andreas, winner of last season’s Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup, French import Master Minded, a facile handicap winner at Sandown on Saturday, and Hoo La Baloo.

My Way De Solzen and Fair Along, who were first and second in The Irish Independent Arkle Chase last season, as well as Kevin Bishop’s stable star Ashley Brook are also entered.
A five-strong entry from Ireland includes the 2006 winner Newmill as well as Mansony, Nickname and Schindlers Hunt who filled the first three places in the Grade One Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown on December 27.

A number of rapidly-improving chasers have been given entries including the Ferdy Murphy-trained Another Promise, winner of the Grade One Swordlestown Cup Novice Chase at Punchestown in April, Jack The Giant, who scored easily at Leicester on Tuesday, Boylesports.com Gold Cup winner Tamarinbleu and the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Don’t Push It, who made a winning return over hurdles at Chepstow in October.

The fourth running of the Ryanair Chase and the first carrying Grade One status has attracted a biggest-ever 57-strong initial entry including an unprecedented 18 from Ireland.

Last season’s Irish Independent Arkle Chase winner My Way De Solzen, who also has a Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase entry, is among those engaged as is King George VI Chase runner-up Our Vic while the Michael Hourigan-trained Mossbank chased home Denman in the Grade One Lexus Chase at Leopardstown on January 28.

Other Irish-trained entries include Michael O’Brien’s pair In Compliance and Forget The Past, the Jessica Harrington-trained Knight Legend, a 20-length winner at Tramore on January 1, novice Sky’s The Limit, the 2006 Coral Cup hero and winner of his last three starts for trainer Edward O’Grady, last season’s John Smith’s Grand National third Slim Pickings and Newmill.

Another Promise and his stablemates Aces Four and L’Antartique are also engaged as is Jack The Giant, Hobbs Hill, winner of all his four starts over fences, The Listener, a dual Grade One winner for Robert Alner, David Pipe’s in-form pair Tamarinbleu and Vodka Bleu, as well as Faasel and Monet’s Garden, trained by Nicky Richards.

Paul Nicholls - who has won two of the three Ryanair Chases to date - has five chances of adding to that record via 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner Star De Mohaison, Master Minded, New Little Bric, Sporazene and Turko.

Edward Gillespie, Managing Director of Cheltenham Racecourse, commented: “The Ryanair Chase has been a huge success since it was added to The Festival in 2005 and we are delighted to see such an outstanding entry for this year’s race, when it will be run as a Grade One for the first time. The Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion is long-established as one of the most exciting events of the season and - with the last two winners set to be taken on by a whole host of up-and-coming performers - the 2008 race is every bit as eagerly-awaited as past renewals.”

Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase - Analysis

The 2007 Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase victor Voy Por Ustedes is among a tremendous 25-strong entry for this year’s renewal of the prestigious Grade One event, which takes place on day two of The Festival, Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

Entries for the thrilling championship contest, worth £310,000, also include 2006 victor Newmill, as well as the rising star of the two-mile chase division, Twist Magic, who has won his last three starts over fences.

The Alan King-trained Voy Por Ustedes took the prize last term with a length and a half victory over Dempsey. He landed the Grade Two Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton on December 27 last time out, but was previously no match for the Paul Nicholls-trained Twist Magic, who was three lengths superior when the pair met in the Grade One Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown on December 8.

Alongside the reigning champion, King has entered last season’s impressive Grade One Irish Independent Arkle Trophy hero My Way De Solzen, who has disappointed in two starts over three miles this term at Haydock and Kempton.

A classy Irish quintet has been entered, including Newmill, who took the prize for trainer John Murphy two years ago. The Arthur Moore-trained Mansony held a fast-finishing Nickname to take the Grade One Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase at Leopardstown on December 27, with Schindler’s Hunt third. Moore won the prize in 1981 with Drumgora and in 1996 with Klairon Davies. The progressive Mansony also saw off the Eamon Sheehy-trained Justified when taking the Grade One Kerrygold Champion Chase at Punchestown in April, while the top-class Nickname won six of seven starts last term for trainer Martin Brassil.

Champion trainer Nicholls won the prestigious contest in 1999 with Call Equiname and again in 2004 with Azertyuiop. His four-strong entry this season also includes French import Master Minded, successful in a two-mile Sandown handicap chase on January 5, last season’s Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase victor Andreas and Desert Orchid Chase runner-up Hoo la Baloo.

Ferdy Murphy has engaged the classy Another Promise, winner of the Grade One Swordlestown Cup Novice Chase at Punchestown in April, while Kevin Bishop could run Ashley Brook, who was runner-up in the 2005 Irish Independent Arkle Trophy to Contraband, now trained by Paul Murphy.

Philip Hobbs was successful in 2002 with Flagship Uberalles and he has entered Fair Along, who was five-lengths second in last season’s The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy in which the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Don’t Push It fell when in contention two out.
Nicky Henderson saddled the brilliant Remittance Man to take the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase in 1992 and he has entered 2007 The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy third Jack The Giant, winner of the The Ladbroke over hurdles in December and impressive when returned to chasing at Leicester on January 8.

David Pipe could saddle Grade Three Boylesports.com Gold Cup winner Tamarinbleu and Grade Two William Hill Gold Cup victor Pablo Du Charmil, while the latter’s half-brother, the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Patman Du Charmil, is also entered.

Howard Johnson has entered the smart Lennon, while Oneway, fourth in 2005, could take his chance for trainer Mark Rimell and Michael Scudamore has engaged Azulejo.

The French challenge consists of the Richard Chotard-trained pair Fustrien Du Paon and Majadal.

SEASONS HOLIDAYS QUEEN MOTHER CHAMPION CHASE FACTS

1. The National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase was first run in 1959 and the Queen Mother’s name was added to the race title in 1980, the year of her 80th birthday.

2. The race’s roll of honour includes plenty of multiple winners. Badsworth Boy (1983-85) is the only three-time winner. The double winners are Fortria (1960 and 1961), Drinny’s Double (1967 and 1968), Royal Relief (1972 and 1974), Skymas (1976 and 1977), Hilly Way (1978 and 1979), Pearlyman (1987 and 1988), Barnbrook Again (1989 and 1990), Viking Flagship (1994 and 1995) and Moscow Flyer (2003 and 2005).

3. Irish-trained runners have a good record in the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase, winning 19 of the 48 runnings. Newmill, trained by John Murphy and ridden by Andrew McNamara, was the most recent Irish-trained scorer in 2006.

4. Tom Dreaper has the best record of any trainer in the race, winning six runnings with Fortria (1960 and 1961), Ben Stack (1964), Flyingbolt (1966), Muir (1969), and Straight Fort (1970). Of current trainers, Arthur Moore (Drumgora 1981 and Klairon Davis 1996), Paul Nicholls (1999 Call Equiname and Azertyuiop 2004) and Jessica Harrington (Moscow Flyer 2003 and 2005) have the best record.

5. Flyingbolt was the shortest-priced winner when succeeding at 1/5 in 1966, while Another Dolly, who was awarded the 1980 race at odds of 33/1, provided the biggest upset.

6. Pat Taaffe is the most successful rider with five wins, while Moscow Flyer’s partner Barry Geraghty is the only current jockey to have landed more than one Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase.

7. The oldest horse to have triumphed was the 12-year-old Skymas in 1977, while the youngest victors were the six-year-olds Inkslinger in 1973 and Voy Por Ustedes in 2007.

8. A small but select field usually lines up for the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase. The largest field was in 1999 when 13 runners went to post, one while only five runners lined up in 1985, 1972, 1968, 1964, 1963 and 1961.

9. The most successful owners are George Ansley, who enjoyed three wins with Fortria (1960 and 1961) and Straight Fort (1970), and Doug Armitage who had three victories with Badsworth Boy (1983, 1984 and 1985).

10. Michael Dickinson trained the winner for three consecutive years with Rathgorman (1982) and Badsworth Boy (1983 & 1984). His mother Monica had taken charge of the training operation for Badsworth Boy’s final success in 1985.

11. In 1986, the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Buck House subsequently met with that year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup heroine Dawn Run in a special match race at Punchestown in April, 1986. It was Dawn Run who prevailed by two and a half lengths.

12. The Irish Independent Arkle Chase is a good guide for future success in the Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase. Voy Por Ustedes (2007), Azertyuiop (2004), Moscow Flyer (2003 and 2005), Flagship Uberalles (2002), Klairon Davis (1996) and Remittance Man (1992) all won the novices’ event before their Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase victory.

Ryanair Chase – Analysis
With an upgrading to Grade One status, this year’s £200,000 Grade One Ryanair Chase, run over two miles and five furlongs at Cheltenham on Thursday, March 13, has attracted a record entry of 57.

Paul Nicholls, responsible for sending out last year’s victor Taranis and 2005 hero Thisthatandtother, has five possibilities, headed by 2006 Royal & SunAlliance Chase winner Star De Mohaison, who delighted his trainer when finishing third on his first start for two years in the Unicoin Homes Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day. The champion trainer has also entered Master Minded, New Little Bric, Sporazene and Turko.

The Charlie Mann-trained Moon Over Miami has scored on both his previous visits to Cheltenham, most recently in the Grade Two Independent Newspaper Novices’ Chase on November 18.

Last year’s second, Our Vic, could aim to go one place better for David Pipe and the trainer has also entered Boylesports.com Gold Cup scorer Tamarinbleu, Pablo du Charmil and Vodka Bleu, who won the TurfTV New Year Chase at Cheltenham on January 1.

Monet’s Garden, who finished fourth behind Taranis in last year’s Ryanair Chase, could represent Greystoke-based trainer Nicky Richards, who has also entered last season’s The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy fourth Faasel.

The first three from that race, My Way De Solzen, Fair Along and recent Ladbroke Hurdle winner Jack The Giant could all reoppose Faasel, while 2005 Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle runner-up Racing Demon, fifth in last year’s Ryanair Chase, is another possible starter.

Dual Grade One scorer The Listener is engaged (as well as in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup), while Nigel Twiston-Davies could be represented by 2004 Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle winner Fundamentalist and Knowhere.

Ferdy Murphy has three possibilities for the race, including this season’s Paddy Power Gold Cup scorer L’Antartique. The Leyburn-based handler could also rely on last year’s Royal & SunAlliance Chase fourth Aces Four and Grade One Swordlestown Cup winner Another Promise.

A strong Irish challenge of 18 entries is headed by John Murphy’s 2006 Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase hero Newmill, and the Michael O’Brien-trained pair of In Compliance and Forget The Past, who finished third in the totesport Gold Cup two years ago.

Justified finished fifth in last season’s Seasons Holidays Queen Mother Champion Chase while Tom Taaffe has entered 2007 Grand National third Slim Pickings.

Other notable Irish entries include Dessie Hughes’ dual Grade One victor Schindler’s Hunt and the Willie Mullins-trained Snowy Morning, who chased home Denman in last season’s Royal & SunAlliance Chase.

The Festival’s current winning-most Irish trainer, Edward O’Grady, has made an entry for 2006 Coral Cup winner Sky’s The Limit while Charlie Swan has entered a talented trio of Drunken Disorderly, Offshore Account and Foreman, who finished behind Voy Por Ustedes and Monet’s Garden in The Irish Independent Arkle Trophy two seasons ago.

RYANAIR CHASE - Facts & Figures
1. The Ryanair Chase was introduced to The Festival in 2005. It replaced the Cathcart Chase, although the conditions of the race changed slightly with it being open to all horses rather than being restricted to first and second season chasers.

2. The first three renewals were run as Grade Two contests. It becomes a Grade One affair in 2008.

3. The Daily Telegraph backed the inaugural contest, with Irish airline Ryanair taking over the sponsorship for 2006.

4. Fondmort, the 100/30 joint-favourite, was landing his fourth race at Cheltenham when victorious in 2006.
