THE FOURTH 2007 CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL INFORMATION PACK
35 AIMING TO BE ON TOP OF THE WORLD
The £250,000 Ladbrokes World Hurdle, the championship event for three-mile hurdlers and the centrepiece of day three of The Festival has attracted 35 entries for its 2007 renewal with nine entries from Ireland and three from France bidding to take on the sponsors’ red-hot 4/5 favourite Black Jack Ketchum.
The winner of last year’s Brit Insurance Novices’ Hurdle, Black Jack Ketchum remains unbeaten after eight starts, including on his seasonal debut in the Mears Group “Relkeel” Hurdle at Cheltenham on December 9. His trainer Jonjo O’Neill has a five-strong entry that also includes East Tycoon, Fire Dragon, Refinement and the now 11-year-old Rhinestone Cowboy.
Inglis Drever, successful two years ago, could bid to become only the second horse to recapture his crown in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle following Crimson Embers in 1982 and 1986. He showed he retained his ability with a Grade Two success at Newbury in November.
There are nine entries from Ireland, including the star mare Asian Maze and Hardy Eustace, successful in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle in 2005 and 2006. Adrian Maguire never won the Ladbrokes World Hurdle as a jockey but is now rapidly making a name for himself as a trainer and he could be represented by Celestial Wave, successful in Grade Two company on her latest two starts at Navan and Leopardstown.
One of France’s best performers, the Francois Cottin-trained Princesse d’Anjou, is an intriguing entry. He won the Grade One Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris at Auteuil in May and also landed the Grade One Prix La Haye Jousselin under Philip Carberry in November. Last season’s Adonis Hurdle winner Kasbah Bliss, trained by Francois Doumen, and Millenium Royal also represent France.
Mighty Man, third when favourite in 2006, is entered again while other interesting contenders include Blazing Bailey, who chased home Black Jack Ketchum at Cheltenham last month, the progressive Flight Leader, successful twice at Cheltenham this season, and Dom D’Orgeval, a winner at Fakenham yesterday afternoon.
Edward Gillespie, Managing Director at Cheltenham, commented: “The Ladbrokes World Hurdle frequently produces one of the best finishes at The Festival and the quality of the entries again this year suggest that we could well be in for another treat in 2007.”
Mike Dillon, Director of Public Relations at Ladbrokes, added: “Everyone is waiting with bated breath to see if Black Jack Ketchum can make the transition from novice to champion in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.”

LADBROKES WORLD HURDLE FACTS
1. The Ladbrokes World Hurdle is one of the youngest races at The Festival. Known as the Stayers’ Hurdle up to and including 2004, it was only introduced with its current race conditions in 1972. Before that, it was known as the Spa Hurdle.
2. The Ladbrokes World Hurdle has been run on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the meeting. It moved to its current Thursday slot in 1993.
3. Its first year of sponsorship was 1972, under the title of the Lloyds Bank Hurdle. There have been four sponsors of the race, Waterford Crystal from 1978 to 1990 and Bonusprint from 1991 to 2004. 2005 was the first year of Ladbrokes’ sponsorship and prize money currently stands at £250,000, up £20,000 on last year.
4. The Ladbrokes World Hurdle used to be a favourite with the Irish, who have won it nine times, most recently in 1995 with Dorans Pride. Baracouda provided a first success for France in 2002 and followed up again in 2003. In 2004 and 2005, he was runner-up behind Iris’s Gift and Inglis Drever respectively, while last year he ran fifth behind My Way De Solzen.
5. The late Fulke Walwyn is the only trainer to have won it more than twice. The race was dominated in the mid-eighties by Crimson Embers, trained by Walwyn, and the winner in 1982 and 1986. Indeed, Crimson Embers would have been awarded the race in the stewards’ room in 1985 had his rider not declined to give evidence to the enquiry afterwards, but the trainer won the race anyway with Rose Ravine. The owner, Pam Smart, was ambivalent about the result - she owned both horses!
6. Gaye Chance, the winner in 1984, was a full-brother to the 1983 Champion Hurdle winner Gaye Brief. Both horses were trained by Mercy Rimell.
7. No horse has managed to win both the Smurfit Champion Hurdle and the Ladbrokes World Hurdle.
8. A total of 10 favourites have been successful.
9. The smallest field to go to post was eight in 1973 while the largest was 22 in both 1985 and 1990. 20 ran last year.
10. There have been three dual winners - Crimson Embers (1982 & 1986), Galmoy (1987 & 1988) and Baracouda (2002 & 2003). No horse has won the race three times.
11. Tommy Carberry, Stuart Shilston, Tommy Carmody, Mark Perrett, Charlie Swan, Jamie Osborne and Thierry Doumen are the most successful jockeys, each recording two victories. No current jockey has won the race more than once.
12. The Ladbrokes World Hurdle forms part of the British Horseracing Board’s 65-race Order Of Merit competition. Royal Shakespeare and Monkerhostin shared the £200,000 first prize last season.

Ladbrokes World Hurdle - Analysis
The Grade One Ladbrokes World Hurdle over three miles is the feature championship event on Thursday, March 15, at The Festival, and has attracted a top-class entry of 35 horses, including nine from Ireland and three from France.
Inglis Drever, the 2005 Ladbrokes World Hurdle hero, could bid to regain his crown having missed last year’s renewal due to injury. The eight-year-old made a winning return to action in the Grade Two VC Casino.com Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury on November 25.
Howard Johnson’s charge faces stiff competition from a powerful Jonjo O’Neill-trained contingent, which is headed by the brilliant Black Jack Ketchum, unbeaten in eight starts including the Grade Two Brit Insurance Novices’ Hurdle over the course and distance at the 2006 Festival.
The top-class eight-year-old scored a decisive victory on his sole start this season in the Grade Two Mears Group “Relkeel” Hurdle over two miles, five and a half furlongs at Cheltenham in November, defeating the Alan King-trained Blazing Bailey by three lengths.
O’Neill’s five-strong entry also includes Rhinestone Cowboy, who defeated the 2004 Ladbrokes World Hurdle victor Iris’s Gift when winning the Grade One Ballymore Properties Champion Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown in April that year. The 11-year-old did not race again until being pulled up behind the Lucy Wadham-trained Grade One winner United in a heavy ground handicap hurdle at Haydock in December and missed an intended start on Saturday when suffering from colic.
The Jackdaws Castle quintet also includes Grade One bumper winner Refinement, East Tycoon and Fire Dragon.
Henry Daly has entered the high-class Mighty Man, who won the extended three-mile Grade One BGC Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot on December 16, from the David Pipe-trained Lough Derg, having finished second to dual Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdler winner Hardy Eustace on his previous outing over just short of two and a half miles in the Coral Ascot Hurdle.
The Emma Lavelle-trained Labelthou landed both the Grade Two Ballymore Properties Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown on December 1 and the Grade Two Ballymore Properties Leamington Novices’ Hurdle at Warwick on Saturday. But she was no match on December 9 for the Colin Tizzard-trained Flight Leader in the Grade Two Brit Insurance Novices’ Hurdle over course and distance. Flight Leader went on to score back-to-back Cheltenham victories when three quarters of a length too good for Temoin in the Steel Plate And Sections Hurdle on New Year’s Day.
Alongside Hardy Eustace, the high-class Irish entry includes the brilliant Tom Mullins-trained mare Asian Maze, winner of Grade One contests two years running at both the Aintree and Punchestown Festivals. She could be joined by the Adrian Maguire-trained mare Celestial Wave, the easy winner of the Grade Two woodiesdiy.com Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown in December.
John Queally could send Grade One winner Al Eile across the Irish Sea, while Finger Onthe Pulse, Our Ben, Powerstation, Santa’s Son and Strangely Brown could also make the journey.
Francois Doumen took the Ladbrokes World Hurdle in 2002 and 2003 with the great Baracouda and the French handler has entered the high-class Kasbah Bliss and Grade One winner Millenium Royal. Compatriot Francois Cottin may run Princesse d’Anjou, winner of the Grade One Prix La Haye Jousselin at Auteuil in November.
The one-eyed mare Material World, trained by Suzy Smith, won over the course and distance in the Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (Qualifier) on December 8, while Overstrand gave Dr Richard Newland the biggest success of his embryonic training career in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle at Sandown six days earlier.
Irish Wolf, Redemption, Lord Sam, Sleeping Night, Just Beth, Korelo and the David Pipe-trained pair, Over The Creek, runner-up in the 2005 Brit Insurance Novices’ Hurdle at The Festival, and Dom d’Orgeval complete the entry.
