WRITING AWARDS FOR UNDER 26s/19s
£2,500 in prizes plus the opportunity to be published
The Martin Wills Memorial Trust, a UK-registered charity, is offering its 13th annual awards for creative writing (fact or fiction) on, or with a background in, any aspect of horseracing by young people resident in the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland. Particular importance will be attached to originality, use of language and entertainment. Quality of writing is much more important than a detailed knowledge of horseracing.
Those aged under 26 at 1 January 2005 (other than employees of the national and racing press and previous winners in their category, who are not eligible) are invited to submit a single typewritten article of under 1,000 words by 28 February 2005 to the Trustees, The Martin Wills Memorial Trust, Henley Knapp Barn, Fulwell, Chipping Norton, Oxon, OX7 4EN (fax: 01608-678 052) or by e-mail to willsct@ukonline.co.uk .
Name, date of birth, address and telephone number should be stated. The article must not be published prior to the announcement of the winners of the awards. No correspondence will be entered into, entries will not be returned, and the judges’ decision is final.
The prizes will be £1,250 to the winner and £750 to the runner-up, with £500 for the best other entry from someone aged under 19 at 1 January 2005.
In addition, the winning articles will be published in the Racing Post and Irish Field, and the winner of the under 26 award will both retain for a year a bronze trophy of two galloping horses by Gill Wiles and have the opportunity of a week’s work experience at the Racing Post.
The awards will be announced and presented at Newmarket on Wednesday 13 April 2005 (Free Handicap and Earl of Sefton Stakes Day at the Craven Meeting), where those successful will be given an expenses paid day’s racing, including a reception in a private luncheon room made available by the Racecourse, plus a tour of two leading stables.
This year’s six judges are: Brough Scott, Editorial Director of the Racing Post, sports feature writer of The Sunday Telegraph and for 30 years until 2001 chief presenter of Channel 4 Racing (Chairman); Rachael English, a radio current affairs journalist who presents the “Five-Seven Live” programme on RTE; Colin Mackenzie, Chief Racing Correspondent of the Daily Mail; J A McGrath, Hotspur of the The Daily Telegraph and Senior Racing Commentator of the BBC; Jon Ryan, Sports Editor of The Sunday Telegraph; and Catherine Wills, art historian sister of Martin Wills.
The 2004 under 26 competition was won by 25-year-old Neil Walsh from Dublin who was employed as Web Manager of the international business of Stan James, the bookmaker, in Gibraltar, having studied journalism for two years in Dublin.
The 2004 under 26 runner up was 25-year-old Andrew Plant from Cambridge, who was studying for an MA in Television Journalism at The Nottingham Trent University, having secured a BA in Media & Culture from the same establishment.
The 2004 under 19 competition was won by 15-year-old Jonathan Monro from London, who was preparing for his first GCSEs at Eton College.
The Martin Wills Memorial Trust commemorates Martin Wills, an amateur jockey, point-to-point rider, racing enthusiast and journalist who died in April 1992, aged 39.
Information on the awards is available on www.mrwc.org.uk/willswritingawards

Great, Late Run for Better Mix
Better Mix, trained by Musabah Al Muhairi, came with an impressive late run to claim the 1,600 metre Qadfa’a Handicap under stable jockey Stanley Chin.
Better Mix led in the early stages, but then settled in fourth with Orchestrated taking the field along. As the winning post approached there was a line of four horses, Valdancer, the mount of Pat Smullen, was slightly ahead of Egyptian, Delude and the fast finishing Better Mix.
Better Mix managed to get up on the line to win by three quarters of a length from Valdancer and the David Hayse-partnered Egyptian.
Jawad Al Kheir, the mount of Ted Durcan, made all to win the Tarif Handicap for Purebred Arabians over 1,200 metre.
Trained by Mazin Al Kurdi, Jawad Al Kheir kicked clear close home to cross the line three and a quarter lengths clear of Halwa de Faust, the mount of Chin.
Al Kurdi and Durcan enjoyed back to back wins at Nad Al Sheba with Clasp running away with the second race of the evening, the Umm Khanoor Thoroughbred Maiden over 1,300 metres.
Clasp, a three-year-old son of Singspiel, raced in second with the pace being set by the Daragh O’Donohoe-partnered Dancing Flair. Clasp was ridden to take the lead four hundred metres from home and ran on to a comfortable three and a quarter length win over stablemate Al Sahim Al Aswad.
Aditiyan Selvaratnam saddled a winner at each of the weekend’s race meetings when Dolbear, the mount of Gary Hind, won the third race of the evening, the Awaffi Handicap over 1,600 metres. Selvaratnam saddle his first winner of the season with Tarfaa bint Swain at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday and followed up with a win at Jebel Ali on Friday with Qixl.
Dolbear raced in mid-division with the field being taken along by Dubai Banner, into the straight Lanzador, trained by Paddy Rudkin and the mount of Dean Mernagh, had the lead and held on until close home when Dolbear began to come through the field, he was short of room between horses at the 200 metres, but then got the gap and ran on to a neck win over Lanzador.
Elmonjed, the mount of Richard Hills, was an easy winner of the fourth race, the Khor Ajman Thoroughbred Handicap over 1,300 metres.
Wilde, Mullen up, led the field into the home straight with the Erwan Charpy-trained Elmonjed making smooth progress to lead 400 metres out and run on to a two length win. Mr Magistrate was closing with every stride as the post loomed and took second with Dubai Guest, the mount of Smullen in third.
Attentive, trained by Satish Seemar and the mount of Durcan, broke his maiden on his 27th attempt when winning the final race of the evening, the Biyatah Handicap over 2,400 metres.
Attentive took up the lead from the Hayse-partnered Arch Of Light in the straight and ran on to win by an easy five and three quarter lengths.
