TROPICAL STAR MAKES IT A WINNING RETURN AT NAD AL SHEBA
Tropical Star made it a winning return to Nad Al Sheba when easily winning the 1,200 metre Al Shindagha Sprint Prep under Dean Mernagh on Thursday evening.
Tropical Star, who was having his first run since finishing runner-up to Firebreak in the Godolphin Mile (Gr.II) on Dubai World Cup day, was always in the first two. The son of Machiavellian took the lead at the 400 metre post and ran on to a comfortable five length win.
The Mazin Al Kurdi-trained pair of Estimraar and San Salvador took the second and third placing respectively.
After the race Mernagh commented, "That was an easy win and it was his preparation for the Carnival (the Dubai International Racing Carnival which begins on January 20th). He has a lot of class and a serious amount of ability. We have a plan mapped out for him and this was just a stepping stone."
It is likely that Tropical Star will return to Nad Al Sheba for the first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.III) on the opening night of the Carnival, a race in which he finished a head runner-up to State Shinto a year ago.
Egyptian, trained by Rashid Bouresly and ridden by Pat Smullen, was a comfortable winner of the 1,500 metres Welcare Hospital Cup. The son of Green Desert was always in the first two, leading into the straight the six-year-old was soon well clear and ran on well to a four and a quarter length win.
Alma'arry, the mount of Dean Mernagh, looked to be going well approaching the 200 metre marker but found little close home, the six and a half kilogrammes he was giving to the winner may have taken its toll.
Sarrab, trained by Yancey Carter Jr and ridden by Smullen came with a good run to win the opening race of the evening, the Bu Hassa Handicap for Purebred Arabians over 2,000 metres.
The field were led into the straight by Ted Durcan-partnered Millennium Storm, but Sarrab was always going well and took the lead just after the 400 metres post. The son of Tidjani stayed on to win by one and a quarter lengths from the fast finishing Elnaawi, the mount of Richard Hills.
Brazilian Jockey Tiago Pereira won on his first ride at Nad Al Sheba when partnering the Aditiyan Selvaratnam-trained Tarfaa bint Swain to win the Al Khan Maiden for Thoroughbreds over 1,200 metres. Although it was the first win in Dubai for Pereira it was his 1,000th career
victory.
Tarfaa bint Swain made all and kicked clear as the line approached to win by five lengths from the David Hayse-partnered Maqadeer and Portland Coup, the mount of Ryan Moore.
Hazelhatch landed his second win in a week when claiming the Sha'am Handicap over 1,100 metres under Richard Mullen. Trained by Mazin Al Kurdi, Hazelhatch was towards the rear of the field and began to make progress to go third 700 metres out.
Mullen kept pushing Hazelhatch to lead close home and ran on to a length victory ahead of Grand Eastern.
Arch of Light, Hayse up, made all to win the Al Surra Handicap over 2,000 metres. Trained by Rashed Bouresly the son of Rainbow Quest held of the consistent challenge of the Royston Ffrench-partnered Naiad to win by a neck.

Delude can claim second win in a week
Delude can continue his successful season with back to back Nad Al Sheba wins by claiming the Qadfa'a Thoroughbred Handicap over 1,600 metres on Thursday evening.
Trained by Mazin Al Kurdi and the mount of Ted Durcan, Delude was a three quarters of a length winner over 1,500 metres here on New Year's Day when beating Mythical Jinks.
Mawwal, trained by Doug Watson and ridden by Willie Supple, was an impressive course and distance winner on December 18th and is a real danger to Delude.
Racing begins at 7.00pm with the Gillian Duffield-trained Al Kesbe, the mount of Richard Hills, having every chance in the Tarif Handicap for Purebred Arabians over 1,200 metres.
Al Kesbe is having his second run of the season following a third place here over 1,300 metres in November. Paddy Rudkin's Al Tareek looks to have the ability to sneak a place following a third place finish behind Velte at the end of December.
Al Kurdi's Clasp, Durcan in the saddle, can claim the Umm Khanoor Maiden for Thoroughbreds over 1,300 metres. The well bred son of Singspiel was runner-up to Burgundian nine days ago and should win in this company on Saturday.
Clasp's stablemate Al Sahim Al Aswad was fifth behind Burgundian last time and has place claims this time along with the Rashed Bouresly-trained Falick Tayeb, the mount of Gary Hind.
Al Kurdi could have a good evening at the races if the Richard Mullen-partnered Attlee can win the third race of the evening, the Awaffi Handicap over 1,600 metres.
Attlee was a course and distance winner on December 16th and followed up quickly with a win over 1,500 metres here two weeks later. Pfennig, trained by Rod Simpson, was over six lengths runner-up to Attlee last time and should fill the same slot on this occasion.
Elmonjed, trained by Erwan Charpy with Hills in the saddle, can take the fourth race of the evening, the 1,300 metre Khor Ajman. The son of Gulch
was a half length second to Junction Line nine days ago over this course
and distance.
Al Kurdi's Mr Magistrate has definite place claims following a third behind Hazelhatch over the straight 1,200 metres on December 30th.
The final race of the evening, the Biyatah Handicap over 2,400 metres should go to the Ali Rashid Al Raihe-trained Musaayer, the mount of Dean Mernagh. The four-year-old son of Erhaab was a comfortable three length winner over 2,000 metres nine days ago.
Placings in the race should go to Attentive, trained by Satish Seemar, and the Watson-trained Babylon's Hero.
