JOHN SMITH'S GRAND NATIONAL CLOSES ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 26
Connections are reminded that entries for the £700,000 John Smith's Grand National at Aintree on Saturday, April 9, 2005, close at noon on Wednesday, January 26.
This is the first year of sponsorship by John Smith's and the value of the world's most famous chase has been increased by £100,000.
Entries will be revealed on Thursday, January 27, while the weights are unveiled at the annual Weights' Lunch at the Savoy Hotel in London on Tuesday, February 8.
All the other 20 races at this year's John Smith's Grand National meeting, which runs from Thursday, April 7 through to Saturday, April 9, close at the five-day stage.
Prize money for the John Smith's Grand National meeting is at a new record level of £2,145,000, with 15 races worth £50,000 or more.
AUTUMN TOP WEIGHT FOR MORE SPRING GLORY
The Geoff Wragg-trained Autumn Glory heads the handicap for this year's Stanleybet Lincoln, run at Doncaster on Saturday, April 2, it is revealed today, Wednesday, January 19.
The five-year-old won last season's Stanleybet Spring Mile, for horses that fail to make the Stanleybet Lincoln cut, and progressed to capture Group Three events at Deauville and Newmarket.
He tops the weights for the famous mile handicap with 10 stone and is quoted a 20/1 chance for victory by the sponsors.
Stanleybet's 14/1 favourite for the £100,000 event is the lightly-raced four-year-old Stream Of Gold, trained by Sir Michael Stoute for Ballymacoll Stud, and guaranteed to get into the race with a weight of 8st 12lb.
Stoute also trains the 16/1 co-second favourite Desert Star, who has run only five times despite now being a five-year-old. But the Queen's home-bred has no shortage of ability and has been allotted 8st 13lb.
Mine, trained in Middleham by James Bethell for Yorkshireman Mike Dawson, landed last season's Victoria Cup and Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, and will have to shoulder 9st 8lb if bidding for another big handicap win at Doncaster, for which he is rated a 20/1 chance.
There is an international feel to this year's race with two entries from Ireland, including last season's Irish Lincolnshire winner Tolpuddle (9st 7lb), representing the shrewd connections of trainer Tommy Stack and owner Patsy Byrne, Royal Guard (8st 7lb), trained in France by John Hammond, while the Spanish-based Englishman Peter Haley puts up two including Scapolo, who has 8st 10lb.
Trainer Barry Hills and owner Guy Reed, who teamed up to win the 2003 Stanleybet Lincoln with Pablo, have entered a similarly impressive sort in Alfonso. The four-year-old is quoted at 20/1 but has a low weight of 7st 12lb and is far from guaranteed to get a run with 63 currently above him in the handicap - the maximum field is 24.
David Barron landed the race in 1991 with Amenable and he has two progressive representatives in Zero Tolerance (8st 12lb) and Flipando (8st 4lb), both offered at 25/1, while Lynda Ramsden - who landed the spoils in 1993 with High Premium - could bid for more Stanleybet Lincoln glory with five-year-old Polygonal, who is another on 25/1 having been given 8st 8lb.
Steven Clarke, Doncaster's General Manager, said: "Autumn Glory has made great progress since winning last season's Stanleybet Spring Mile and it will be fascinating to see whether he can complete a unique double off top weight in the Stanleybet Lincoln on April 2.
"This year's race looks as competitive as you could possibly imagine and it will not be an easy prize to capture."

Class 1, Heritage Handicap, Total Prize Fund £100,000, one mile, Doncaster, Saturday, April 2, 2005. For 4yo+. Weights: Lowest weight 7st 12lb. Highest weight not less than 9st 10lb. Any horse rated above 110 shall initially be treated as having that rating and the highest weight allotted shall be 9st 10lb.
