SOUTHWELL JACKPOT POOL EXPECTED TO TOP £70,000
Big rollovers will make the Tote Jackpot the major focus of betting interest tomorrow for the first time since the minimum stake was increased to 50p at the beginning of this week.
Over £17,000 was added to the £24,859 Jackpot pool which arrived at Southwell this afternoon, but lines soon went tumbling and King Priam winning leg three of the bet saw off the last £2 in the pool. By the time the pools close tomorrow the Tote expects there to be over £70,000 up for grabs for punters playing the Jackpot at Southwell.
"It is a good test for the new look Jackpot in its first week," said Andy Clifton from the Tote.
"Unlike previous Jackpots which have had rollover momentum behind them, this will be the first time that the larger staking customers will not be able to swamp the pool by doing a multitude of small lines for a relatively small outlay."
RESULT OF DAVID WINTLE ENQUIRY
Panel: Andrew Merriam (Chairman), William Bethell and John Wallinger
David Wintle
The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club held an enquiry on 9th January 2003 to consider whether or not David Wintle, a licensed trainer, had committed a breach of Rule 220 (iii) of the Rules of Racing, in respect of the conversations portrayed in the BBC TV programme Kenyon Confronts, screened on 11th June 2002, and in a collection of video footage obtained subsequently from the BBC which included material used in the programme.
The Panel also considered whether or not Wintle had committed a breach of Rule 155 (i) and/or (ii), in respect of the running of SEATTLE ALLEY (USA) at Warwick on 9th March 2002 and at Fontwell Park on 23rd March 2002; and his possible breach of Rule 220 (ii) in respect of his behaviour towards Mr Paul Kenyon at Stratford racecourse on 31st May 2002.
The Panel heard evidence from Wintle, who was legally represented. It also viewed extracts from the video recording of Kenyon Confronts and a collection of video footage obtained from the BBC.
Having considered the evidence the Panel found Wintle to be in breach of Rule 220 (iii) in that he had indicated to the Kenyon Confronts team that he would be prepared not to run SEATTLE ALLEY on its merits to enable them subsequently to back the horse off a lower handicap mark and in breach of Rule 155 (i) and (ii) in that he had prepared SEATTLE ALLEY to run at both Warwick and Fontwell in such a way as to prevent the gelding from obtaining the best possible placing.
The Panel also found Wintle in breach of Rule 220 (ii) in that he had acted in a violent manner towards Mr Kenyon at Stratford albeit that he was provoked.
The Panel imposed a fine of £4500 upon Wintle in respect of Rule 220 (iii), a fine of £2200 in respect of Rule 155 (i) and (ii), and a fine of £500 in respect of Rule 220 (ii).
TOTE GOLD TROPHY ATTRACTS MASSIVE ENTRY
The Tote has revealed today that the £120,000 Tote Gold Trophy, Europe's richest handicap hurdle, which closed yesterday, has attracted 87 entries, including 17 from Ireland. The full list will be published in next week's Racing Calendar, but the Tote expressed delight at the news.
Public Relations Director Andy Clifton said: "We're really pleased with the number of entries. Last year the race closed in December and received 53 eligible entries, but after discussing the closing date with the BHB's Race Planning team and Newbury Racecourse we decided to close a little later this year, partly to assist owners and partly to give the handicapper more evidence to work with, and it has clearly paid dividends. I'm sure that this year's Tote Gold Trophy will be of the highest quality and as competitive as always."
RACING CHANNEL TO CLOSE
The Racing Channel, which is owned by US sports broadcaster TRNI, is to close, it was announced today. Broadcasts will terminate after January 31 2003.
Mr David Holdgate, Chief Executive of SIS which produces the Racing Channel programming and handles distribution on behalf of TRNI, said that he had been informed of TRNI's decision following their failure to reach agreement for continued coverage of racing in Ireland.
Broadcasting rights revenues for the 10 British racecourses whose races are broadcast on the Racing Channel will be unaffected. Mr Holdgate explained: "We retain the broadcast rights for these courses, and their payments for these rights are fully protected. We are now considering other possible opportunities for the use of these rights in the future".
Mr Holdgate said that staff of the Racing Channel had been informed of the decision. "Of course, we are all very sad that this excellent team has to be disbanded. It should be remembered that, when we started The Racing Channel, it was ground-breaking as the first single sport service of its type. The professionals behind the Racing Channel have made a tremendous contribution to the popularity of the sport in this country, and their professionalism and enthusiasm have been widely and rightly recognised."
MONDAY START TO DONCASTER'S 2003 CAMPAIGN
Doncaster's opening meeting of 2003 takes place on Monday (13 January) - the first of 29 scheduled racedays during the year on Town Moor (20 days staging Flat racing and nine over Jumps).
The feature race on Monday is The Tote Exacta Chase - a ś12,000 Showcase Handicap over three miles - while the titles of the other five races refer to the Exhibition & Conference Centre at Doncaster Racecourse.
With indoor space of 4,300 square metres and state-of-the-art facilities, The Exhibition Centre is a leading venue of its kind in Britain, hosting many large events such as The Festival of British Railway Modelling Exhibition (8 & 9 February), The National Custom and Sports Car Show (12 & 13 April) and The Driffield Championship Dog Show (9 - 12 October). All three events have races named after them on Monday, when racing is scheduled to begin at 1.25 p.m.
The Civil Marriage Ceremony Venue Novices' Hurdle draws attention to the fact that Doncaster is licensed to conduct marriage ceremonies in the historic weighing-room.
