LINGFIELD & SOUTHWELL GO AHEAD BUT HAYDOCK OFF

Lingfield’s all-weather Flat racing fixture today is to go ahead despite snow.

Southwell’s all-weather fixture is also going ahead

A third inspection about jump racing on turf at Haydock Park at 10am resulted in the decision to call off the fixture because parts of the course were frozen.

THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

Lingfield, Satuday, January 4, 2003

2.40pm Littlewood Bets Direct Handicap 12 furlongs

Going- Standard

BP= best price of Coral, William Hill, Ladbrokes and the Tote

1(14) 003- Herodotus 24 Clive Brittain 5-10-0 Ian Mongan BP= 18/1 Tote & Coral
Ran well on his first run for over five months when third over 10 furlongs in December at this course. Will be suited by these extra two furlongs and won a similar race in February. Excellent value each way.

2(1) 212- Linning Wine 14 B G Powell 7-9-10 Jimmy Quinn BP= 4/1 Tote & William Hill
Consistent sort who won over course and distance in December and has been second twice over 10 furlongs. In theory has the beating of Herodotus when they were second and third here but the latter was having his first run for a while.

3(11) 15/ Green Ideal 497 (275J) Nicky Henderson 5-9-04 Darren Williams(3) BP= 10/1 Ladbrokes
Has not raced for nearly a year but is lightly raced and could have a chance as he is being prepared no doubt for a jump campaign. A shortish price.

4(16) 153- Madeline Bassett 21 Gerard Butler 5-9-01v P J Scallan(3) BP= 14/1 Ladbrokes & Coral
A winner over the course over 10 furlongs in November but has since finished third in a claimer.

5(12) 055 Compton Commander 14 Gerard Butler 5-9-00v Eddie Ahern BP= 12/1 Tote & William Hill
Has been staying on his last two races here over 10 furlongs and 12 furlongs.

6(10) 818- Sphinx 32 Nick Littmoden 5-8-13 J Guillambert (7) BP= 16/1 Coral
Beat Compton Commander by a length over 12 furlongs and is 2lb worse off.

7 (4) 307- Shayadi 15 Mark Johnston 6-8-12 Keith Dalgleish BP= 25/1 generally
Having first all-weather run. Quite useful on the turf and not out of it.

8 (13) 069- Expected Bonus 94 Stuart Williams 4-8-11 Gary Carter BP= 20/1 Coral & Tote
First all-weather run but has disappointed on the turf.

9 (3) 171- High Hope 46 (17J) Gary Moore 5-8-10 Shane Kelly BP= 11/2 William Hill
Won on his all-weather debut in amateur event in November and has since been fourth over hurdles. Shortish price.

10 (15) 240- Forest Tune 75 (17J) Ben Hanbury 5-8-05 Wendyll Woods BP= 22/1 Tote & Coral
Won over a mile at Wolverhampton and Southwell in April and June respectively. First run since October.

11 (9) 024 Harik 301 (17J) Gary Moore 9-8-05 Roby Brisland BP= 40/1 Ladbrokes & Coral
Form at two miles on the all-weather and has it to do at this shorter trip.

12 (5) 412- Kristensen 28 Don Eddy 4-8-04 J F McDonald (7) BP= 12/1 Coral
Consistent sort but this is a much tougher contest.

13 (7) 269 Talldark ìN ìAndsome 14 Nick Littmoden 4-8-03 Paul Doe BP= 10/1 except Coral
Consistent sort who has had just one on the all-weather which he may have needed. Worth another chance. Not great value though.

14 (6) 201- Theatre 21 Jamie Poulton 4-8-02 Simon Whitworth BP= 12/1 Ladbrokes
Won a maiden over course and distance last month but has more to do here.

15 (2) 112 Sudden Flight 35 Roger Ingram 6-8-00 Jamie Mackay BP= 16/1 Tote
Won a couple at Wolverhampton but has more to do here.

16 (8) 767 Street Life 24 Willie Musson 5-7-12 Matthew Henry BP= 8/1 Ladbrokes & Tote
May have needed his first run on the all weather last time. Had shown improvement on the turf. But shortish price offers little value.

SUMMARY
This is an open race but HERODOTUS is excellent value each-way.
