TWO IN RACE FOR £26,000 BONUS PRIZE FUND

Two anonymous Tote Credit clients, one from Godalming in Surrey and one from Fareham in Hampshire have their eyes firmly fixed on the Scoop6 Bonus Prize fund this weekend which stands at £26,077.

The two shared last Saturday's Scoop6 Win fund with each taking home a dividend of £30,423, and can now add the Bonus Prize fund money by picking the winner of the 2.40 at Lingfield tomorrow.

"Last week an anonymous punter from Stockon-on-Tees landed the entire Bonus Prize fund to himself bringing his total winnings on the bet to more than £175,000 and became the 7th biggest 'small-staking' winner on the Scoop6," said Tote spokesman Jeremy Scott.

"Indeed overall 2002 was a great year for small staking Scoop6 punters, with Paul Freeman setting the standard by turning his £8 Scoop6 bet into a whopping £517,000 back in November and climbing to the top of the 'Hall of Fortune'."

"The challenge for small staking punters in 2003 is to knock him off his perch, and who knows, by the end of the year we could have seen our first ever small staking Scoop6 millionaire!"

Saturday's Scoop6 races are:
leg 1 2.05 Lingfield - Bet Direct Handicap
leg 2 2.20 Haydock - cantorsport.co.uk 'Dipper' Novices' Chase
leg 3 2.40 Lingfield - Littlewoods Bet Direct Handicap
leg 4 2.55 Haydock - Cantor Index Handicap Chase
leg 5 3.15 Lingfield - betdirect.co.uk Classified Stakes
leg 6 3.45 Lingfield - Bet Direct Football Cashback Fillies' Handicap

BRILLIANT CURULE ON COURSE FOR THIRD GODOLPHIN MILE ATTEMPT

Curule brilliant on return Just a fortnight after Conflict announced himself a runner at the Dubai World Cup meeting for the fourth time, Curule did likewise with a brilliant return to racing in the DRC Carnival Trophy at Nad Al Sheba.

The DRC Carnival Trophy was the lead-in for the AED350,000 Group III opening round of the Maktoum Challenge in three weeks time and trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said that was the next obvious target for the horse after his impressive neck win over Estimraar.

Like Conflict, Curule has competed at the three previous Dubai World Cup programmes, finishing third in China Visit¹s UAE Derby in 2000, second to Festival Of Light in 2001 Godolphin Mile and third behind Grey Memo in the 2002 Godolphin Mile and the two are likely to meet in the opening round at Nad Al Sheba on January 23.

Curule was originally trained by McLaughlin before being transferred to Godolphin and was one of the stable¹s inaugural representatives in the Kentucky Derby.

He remained with the stable until the end of the 2001/2002 season in the Emirates before being transferred back to McLaughlin.

"We were happy to hand him back to Godolphin and everyone at the stable was more than happy to have him back," McLaughlin said.

Ironically Curule will now provide the major competition to Godolphin who usually have their first representatives in the opening round of the Maktoum Challenge.

McLaughlin will also take confidence from last year¹s result when Skoozi won the Maktoum Challenge Prep, defeating Conflict, before going on to defeat China Visit and Royal tryst in the opening round.

It was a strong performance by Curule who wore down Estimraar to win by a neck with Sobieski over six lengths away third.

Estimraar was attempting to win his fifth race from as many starts this season but was run down in the final 50m.

"For most of the way up the straight, no I didn¹t think I was going to get to Estimraar but in the final 100m I thought I would," winning jockey Willie Supple said.

"He will certainly improve, he is old enough to take the runs and I wouldn't call it tough for him."

Estimraar's defeat halted a possible treble for the in form Mazin Al Kurdi stable who had earlier been represented by Tala Ya and Jamrr, the latter coming back from 2,400m to 1,600m in a week.

John Sadler also secured a double winning with Biographer (Michael Hussey) and Afghan (Ted Durcan), bringing up a double for Durcan who was successful aboard the opening winner Channel Four.

Durcan's two winners continues his good recent form which has seen him cut into the lead of runaway leader Wayne Smith in the race for the 2002/2003 Jockeys' Championship.

Willie Ryan denied McLaughlin a big race winning double when continuing his strong association with Purebred Arabian trainer Yancey Carter when Djezebel secured the Group II Mazrat Al Ruwayah.

Djezebel made it three wins from as many starts this season when holding on to defeat the McLaughlin-trained Bopp Moon with the Gillian Duffield-trained Jiyush.

Comment: DJEZEBEL's two wins from her only two starts this season was impossible to fault however the big question leading into this Mazrat Al Ruwayah was whether she would stay the strong 1,600m against some of the very best Purebred Arabians in the Emirates. She was going from handicap class to set weights however she showed herself to be a filly on the improve and there is no reason why she wouldn't carry on to the Group I opening round of the Maktoum Challenge. The question was whether she could get to the front and then have enough in reserve to hold the strong challenges that were bound to come. She did lead on the inside of MUSHAAGIB and then got a gap at the top of the straight, big enough to hold off the late challenges of BOPP MOON and the newcomer JIYUSH. The story of the race could come done to the time of the race, DJEZEBEL clocking 1:48.88 and in comparison to the three previous runnings of this event, the filly was able to dictate, go along at her own pace, an advantage she held right to the line. Parador had recorded 1:46.05 in 2000 and 1:46.19 in 2001 while Ezil ran 1:45.3 in 2000 when the race was called the ERA Conditions Stakes. BOPP MOON again ran well and this second here goes with similar placings behind DJIIN in the Prep race to this and behind Khoutoubia in the National Day Cup and the opening round of the Maktoum Challenge is sure to suit. JIYUSH will improve a great deal for this, having shown outstanding form in England prior to his arrival, he appeared to handle the dirt race quite well and he will be better suited in three weeks time. DJELMIDOR didn't begin well but was soon up behind the leaders and tired in the final 400m however he will be much improved in three weeks. DJIIN didn't repeat his effort of three weeks ago when beating BOPP MOON and never really put himself into the race.

Race Seven. The Quavering Handicap 2,400m
Thoroughbreds. NH & SH 3YOs & Up 65-90.

RESULT OF IAN MONGAN APPEAL

Panel: Andrew Merriam (Chairman), Alistair Macdonald-Buchanan and John Wallinger

Ian Mongan

The Disciplinary Panel of the Jockey Club, on 3rd January 2003, considered an appeal lodged by Ian Mongan, the rider of TRUE COMPANION, unplaced in the Happy New Year From Bet Direct Maiden Stakes, against the decision of the Stewards at Lingfield to find him guilty of careless riding and to suspend him from riding for four days, following an enquiry on 30th December 2002.

The Panel heard evidence from Mongan and Oscar Urbina, the rider of HASINA (IRE), placed third. It also viewed video recordings of the race.

The Panel found that TRUE COMPANION had interfered with HASINA (IRE) and accepted Mongan's admission that it was caused by careless riding on his part. The Panel found that, from the furlong marker, he allowed TRUE COMPANION to drift across from the centre of the course to the rail taking HASINA (IRE) off her intended line, when it ought to have been obvious to him that interference would result.

It dismissed the appeal and suspended Mongan from riding for 4 days, from Wednesday 8th January to Saturday 11th January inclusive. The Panel ordered the deposit money to be forfeited.
