OSBORNE AND POULTON TARGETING THE FREEPHONE STANLEY LINCOLN

Jamie Osborne today revealed that Sahaat goes on trial for the £100,000 Freephone Stanley Lincoln either on Friday or Saturday.

The former John Hammond-trained five-year-old has 8st 9lb in the great Doncaster handicap which is run on Saturday, March 22.

Sahaat, quoted at 33/1 by the sponsors Stanley Racing, finished 10th to Kirovski after making the running for a long way in a 0-105 mile and a quarter handicap on Lingfield's polytrack surface on January 18, when having his first start for the Lambourn trainer

Osborne said: "Sahaat has only had the one run for us and he's going to run twice more on the all-weather. Plans are all up in the air but, if he found his form, he's a possible for the Lincoln."

The Machiavellian horse has a choice of two engagements this weekend, either over an extended mile at Wolverhampton on Friday or a mile and a quarter at Lingfield the following day.

"Sahaat will probably run at Wolverhampton because of the trip more than anything," explained the trainer. "At the moment, I'd like to keep him to a mile and I'd like to try him at Wolverhampton - I think getting his toe in the ground there will suit him. He needed the outing at Lingfield a bit."

Sahaat ran in three French Listed races and a Group Three last year after winning over a mile on soft ground at Lyon Parilly in April. His best performance of 2002 came when he was a close fourth in the Listed Prix de Boulogne over 10 furlongs at Longchamp in September.

Osborne's other possible Freephone Stanley Lincoln contestant Spindor is on a mark of 7st 10lb, which makes him much less likely of getting into the big race, with a maximum of 24 horses being allowed to line up. There is the consolation race, the Stanleybet.com Spring Mile, at Doncaster the day before, Friday, March 21, but the trainer needs to see an improvement in form first before considering this option.

Jamie Poulton today said that he would like to run Brilliant Red in the Freephone Stanley Lincoln. However, his charge's participation in the £100,000 contest depends on the right ground conditions and getting a run as Brilliant Red is currently joint 60th in the weights on a mark of 7st 12lb.

The East Sussex trainer explained: "I think we'd have a go with Brilliant Red in the Lincoln. He's got in on a very favourable weight as he split Kirovski and Adiemus at Lingfield the other day [when the head second to the former in the mile and a quarter handicap on January 18].

"If the ground was anything like good and he's fresh and well in the spring, he would run, especially after running those two that close."

The 10-year-old Royal Academy gelding has had one outing since that fine performance, finishing third Sharmy in a 0-95 handicap over a mile and a half at Lingfield on Saturday.

He has been entered in another mile and a quarter handicap at the Surrey course this weekend, but will not run according to Poulton who said: "I was a little bit disappointed with Brilliant Red last weekend. His blood results have since confirmed my fears that he was just feeling the effects of his recent runs a little bit but that's not to say he's not still in good nick.

"Also, while he finished third, a mile and a half is not really his distance. I'm going to miss the race this weekend for another one in two weeks' time - a 0-100 handicap over a mile and a quarter at Lingfield."

Brilliant Red had his first outing for Poulton in November. He has won twice and been in the first three on three of his other four outings for his new trainer.

Poulton believes that a change of scenery and routine have made the difference: "He's been a model of consistency, running very well for a 10-year-old. The horse has always had an engine and he's obviously got a buzz about being in a new place. We've worked hard on him and he's done very well.

"We've shown him a different life as well - he swims at the beach, has been hunting twice and the girl that will have him when he retires - who is at university but works for me during the holidays - jumps him over the mini cross-country locally and just lets him enjoy himself."

Brilliant Red has run in 70 races, winning 11 of them, six on the turf over distances ranging from seven to 10 furlongs, and five on the all-weather at Lingfield over 10 furlongs. Poulton has also entered Learned Lad (6st 2lb) at Doncaster, hoping to get a run in the Stanleybet.com Spring Mile. This is a race that Poulton would dearly love to win as his Zurs was the head runner-up to Bomb Alaska in the 1999 renewal.

"I'm going to take my revenge for four years ago when Zurs was narrowly beaten," said the trainer. "I see Learned Lad as a very similar type to Zurs and the Spring Mile will be where we shall have a crack if he gets in. He is another horse who has to have good ground.

"If it was good ground and Brilliant Red had to settle for the Spring Mile, he would still take some beating in that race even though the weights would go up and he'd probably have about 9st. He's put in some great performances off over 9st and he carried 9st 12lb on his last run."

After the forfeit stage on January 21, 134 of the record 137 original entries for Freephone Stanley Lincoln go forward for the big handicap. The second forfeit stage is on March 4.

BUMPER JACKPOT ROLLOVER GRACES LINGFIELD CARD

A Tote Jackpot rollover of £207,666 will start the bet off tomorrow after-for the second day in a row-Jackpot punters saw a huge dividend ripped from their grasp on the final leg of this afternoons Jackpot meeting at Lingfield.

Tomorrow's Jackpot will return to Lingfield, where this afternoon over £70,000 was added to the £134,926 rolling over from Taunton yesterday. With the additional funds swelling the pool tomorrow a total Jackpot pool of over £300,000 is likely to be up-for-grabs.

"With the first Jackpot leg being screened live on Channel4, punters have more reason than ever to have a go at playing into what should prove to be the second biggest Jackpot pool of the last 12 months," said Tote spokesman Jeremy Scott.

"Gin Harbor proved this afternoons 'Jackpot buster' in leg 4 of the bet. The 25-1 chance (paying £44 on the Tote) saw off over 99% of the running-on money surviving from leg 3, leaving just £49.50 still 'live'."

"By the last leg just £7.50 remained, none of which was covering eventual winner Scarlet Secret."
