JACKPOT POOL SET TO BREAK £200,000 BARRIER AS ROLLOVER TRAVELS TO LINGFIELD
Jackpot punters came within a whisker of landing a monster dividend on the bet this afternoon when the pool at Taunton reached a massive £134,926, only to be cruelly denied on the last.
Over £60,000 was added to the £74,109 rollover which travelled from yesterdays Jackpot fixture at Kempton and with no one winning the cash this afternoon, well over £200,000 is expected to be up for grabs by the time the pool closes tomorrow at Lingfield.
"With £7.50 running onto the last leg covering the 13-8 favourite and 2-1 second favourite the bet looked as good as won this afternoon," said Tote spokesman Jeremy Scott.
"However the biggest priced winner of the day from the Somerset track, (12-1 chance No Visibility) in the last Jackpot leg put paid to the hopes of the owners of the final few lines and ensured another day of big-betting Jackpot excitement is on the cards tomorrow when well over £200,000 will be up for grabs."
HIGH-CLASS RACING AT WETHERBY ON SATURDAY
Wetherby Racecourse hosts a fantastic seven-race programme on Saturday, February 1, 2003, with a Grade Two double-header, kicked off by the £35,000 Grade Two WEATHERBYS TOWTON NOVICES' CHASE (2.50pm).
This prestigious three mile, one furlong, contest gives an opportunity to future star staying chasers to win a valuable prize at this fine Yorkshire jumping venue.
The Venetia Williams-trained Arctic Camper took the last running of this excellent race in the 1999/2000 campaign, getting the better of subsequent attheraces Gold Cup winner Beau and future 2001 Coral Eurobet Welsh Grand National hero Supreme Glory.
Two seasons earlier the Weatherbys Towton Novices' Chase went to one of that campaign's best novice chasers in Escartefigue who finished runner-up to subsequent Pertemps King George VI Chase winner Florida Pearl in the 1998 Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and was then successful in the Martell Cup at Aintree.
The 1996 renewal was won by the Noel Chance-trained Mr Mulligan, who was 15 lengths superior to nearest rival Call It A Day. Two months later, Mr Mulligan was second to Nahthen Lad in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase and the following season returned to Cheltenham, where he entered the annals of racing history by winning the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The current going at the Yorkshire course is soft, good to soft in places, and the forecast is mixed.
Scottish trainer Len Lungo today revealed that The Bajan Bandit is "a probable" runner in the Weatherbys Towton Novices' Chase.
The eight-year-old has won 10 of his 12 starts under Rules, sustaining his only defeats in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle at the 2002 Cheltenham Festival and on his last start in a two mile, six furlong novices' chase at Haydock earlier this month, when beaten nine lengths by the smart It Takes Time.
"The Bajan Bandit is fine and in A1 condition," said Lungo. "He doesn't need the going to be soft. Although he goes on heavy ground and he's won on heavy, I would prefer not to run him on it - you can lose the rest of the season if a horse has too hard a race in those conditions. I don't think the step up in trip will worry him "
The Bajan Bandit is one of 10 entries for the £35,000 chase, with intended runner Keen Leader, trained by Jonjo O'Neill, Telemoss, from Nicky Richards' Cumbria yard and the George Moore-trained dual Wetherby winner Jungle Jinks, who are all unbeaten in completed starts over fences, among the others.
The second part of Wetherby's Grade Two double-header on Saturday is the £30,000 Grade Two GERRARD WEALTH MANAGEMENT NOVICES' HURDLE (3.25pm), over two miles, for novice four-year-olds and upwards, which has attracted 18 entries, including Rhinestone Cowboy, who has won all three of his races this season for O'Neill and is a likely runner.
The Nicky Henderson-trained Dusk Duel justified long odds-on favouritism in 2000 in this valuable event, which is sponsored by Gerrard, one of the U.K.'s leading private client investment management companies.
Mary Reveley, who trains in Cleveland, was successful in 1998 with Foundry Lane, who denied Wahiba Sands by four lengths. The latter went on to become one of only two horses to have beaten last year's Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate over fences, when triumphant in Ascot's First National Gold Cup in 2001.
The 1994 renewal went to Cumbrian Challenge, who became one of the most popular racehorses associated with Wetherby, winning an amazing 10 times at his favourite racecourse. These victories included success in the 1998 Castleford Chase.
Three years previously Ruling was victorious in the Gerrard Wealth Management Novices' Hurdle for trainer Fulke Johnson Houghton and subsequently finished third to Morley Street in the Smurfit Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham's National Hunt Festival, and he filled the same position again in hurdling's top race the following season behind Royal Gait.
Lungo has entered Jupiter De Bussy and Brooklyn Breeze in this year's Gerrard Wealth Management Novices' Hurdle, although the latter runs in a novices' hurdle at Musselburgh today.
"I'll have to wait and see on the ground and how Jupiter De Bussy is in at the weights, but he's a possible for Wetherby," explained the Carrutherstown handler. "We try to pick races where our runners are not exposed to horses much higher in the ratings so I'll have a look at the other runners and then make a decision."
Jupiter De Bussy has won his last two races over hurdles, including a novices' handicap at Ayr on Boxing Day but in the long run Lungo sees him as a chaser in the making.
"He is a horse who will go novice chasing next year so I will not run him too often," added the trainer.
Noel Chance today revealed that Beyond The Pale would run in the Gerrard Wealth Management Novices' Hurdle as long as the ground does not come up too soft for the winner of his only start over timber. Beyond The Pale won a novices' hurdle at Newbury from Derivative over Christmas.
Chance commented: "Beyond The Pale's participation at Wetherby depends on the ground - if it was good to soft he'd run, if it was soft or heavy he wouldn't go. He's come out of Newbury in excellent form."
Prior to his Newbury victory, Beyond The Pale was a nine and a half length fifth behind Rhinestone Cowboy in a bumper at Cheltenham in November.
The Lambourn-based trainer commented: "If you cast your eye back to that bumper at Cheltenham, that's blue-chip form. He was fifth there but probably should have finished third if he hadn't been interfered with and the form of that race has worked out great.
"Flame Creek [who is being targeted at this year's Smurfit Champion Hurdle] is the quickest horse we have - Beyond The Pale would be the quickest novice."
Other quality contests include the £20,000-added TOTE EXACTA HANDICAP CHASE (1.40pm) over an extended two miles and four furlongs with Barton among the entries, and the £10,000-added EUROTEL HANDICAP HURDLE (2.15pm) over two miles.
Another race of interest to jump racing enthusiasts is the WILMOT-SMITH MEMORIAL CUP (4pm), over three miles and a furlong, which is Britain's first hunters' chase of 2003 and has Earthmover entered.
This contest is held in memory of brothers Nick and Pat Wilmot-Smith. The former chaired the Wetherby Steeplechase Committee Limited, while his brother was a director.
RACING IN WESSEX CHASE THE HIGHLIGHT AT WINCANTON ON FEBRUARY 6
The £17,000-added K J PIKE & SONS RACING IN WESSEX CHASE (3.30pm) is the highlight of Wincanton's next fixture on Thursday, February 6.
The two miles and five furlong contest has been won by some very useful chasers in previous years including the 1991 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup hero Garrison Savannah, who landed back-to-back renewals in 1994 and 1995 for trainer Jenny Pitman, while the great Desert Orchid was successful in 1990. Last year Upgrade triumphed for record-breaking Somerset-based Martin Pipe.
The action gets underway on February 6 with the £7,000-added EBF/CRANDON PARK STUD MARES' ONLY NATIONAL HUNT' NOVICES' HURDLE (2.00pm) over two miles and six furlongs. Mares that finish in the first six in this race will be eligible to contest the EBF/Crandon Park Stud Mares' Only Novices' Hurdle Final at Newbury on March 22. The best winner of this race in recent years was Josh Gifford's Brief Gale, successful in 1994, who went on to win the following season's Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Race two on the card is the £8,000-added BETTY HUNT NOVICES' CHASE (2.30pm) over three miles, one and a half furlongs. Chives took in this race last year prior to finishing third in the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. This season he was second under top weight in the Welsh National at Chepstow and could run in the 2003 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup and Martell Grand National.
A valuable novices' hurdle is the third race of the day, the £14,000-added DICK REYNOLDS NATIONAL HUNT' NOVICES' HURDLE (3.00pm) over two miles and six furlongs. Past winners of this event include Lord Noelie in 1999, who went on to take the Royal & SunAlliance Chase at Cheltenham the following season.
The fifth race of the afternoon should prove to be a competitive affair, the £7,000-added WINCANTON RACECOURSE ANNUAL MEMBERS HANDICAP HURDLE (4.00pm), a two-mile contest for horses rated 0-125. Wincanton specialist Achilles Wings won last year for trainer Karen George, while the 1997 winner Northern Starlight went on glory in Cheltenham's Tripleprint Gold Cup and the Topham Chase at Aintree.
Concluding the afternoon's racing is Wincanton's first hunter chase of the season, the STEWART TORY MEMORIAL TROPHY HUNTERS' CHASE (4.30pm) over three miles, one and a half furlongs. Double Silk, twice a winner of the Christie's Foxhunter Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and also the Martell Foxhunters' at Aintree, landed this race in 1997 while Horus was successful 12 months ago and has gone on to prove a useful performer in handicap chases this season.
Stephen Higgins, Racecourse Manager at Wincanton, said: "The K J Pike & Sons Racing In Wessex Chase is usually a very good race and we look forward to another exciting contest this year. A number of highly-informative novice events are also run."
EXCELLENT RACING AT WINCANTON IN FEBRUARY
Wincanton racecourse holds the first of its two February fixtures on Thursday, February 6, when there is a good quality six-race programme on offer.
The highlight of the day is the £17,000-added K J PIKE & SONS RACING IN WESSEX CHASE (3.30pm) over two miles and five furlongs. Past winners of this race include the likes of 1991 Tote Cheltenham Gold winner Garrison Savannah and the great grey himself, Desert Orchid.
The racing starts at 2.00pm with the EBF/CRANDON PARK STUD MARES' ONLY NATIONAL HUNT' NOVICES' HURDLE and runs through to the STEWART TORY MEMORIAL TROPHY HUNTERS' CHASE at 4.30pm.
Admission charges on February 6 are Club Enclosure £15 (17-25s with ID £9), Tattersalls Enclosure £10 (17-25s with ID £8), Course Enclosure £6 and cars parked in the Course Enclosure £6. Other parking is FREE. Children aged 16 and under, accompanied by a responsible adult, gain FREE admission to all enclosures.
There are lots of facilities at Wincanton to help ensure that racegoers are able to thoroughly enjoy their afternoon at the racecourse. Wincanton offers snack bars in every enclosure and a choice of seven public bars, including the "See More Business" bar, which also offers seafood, in the Club Enclosure and is named after the Paul Nicholls-trained 1999 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup hero.
The excellent restaurant overlooking the paddock needs to be booked in advance by contacting the racecourse. The indoor viewing gallery with seats, opposite the winning post in the Club Enclosure, provides good viewing in a warm environment and has a bar and snack bar.
Wincanton is then scheduled to race on Saturday, February 15, when the £150,000 Wessex Racing Festival, the Somerset course's richest day of the season, takes place.
The first race then is due off at 1.50pm and two valuable trials for the Cheltenham Festival take centre stage - the Listed £40,000 Country Gentlemen's Association Chase and the Grade Two £50,000 Axminster Kingwell Hurdle, won in 2002 by the subsequent Smurfit Champion Hurdle winner Hors La Loi III.
ARENA ANNOUNCE MAJOR FOLKESTONE REFURBISHMENT
Folkestone, Kent's only racecourse, enjoyed an exceptionally successful year in 2002, and its owners, Arena Leisure, have decided to capitalise on the progress made by spending £250,000 to improve spectator facilities at the course at Westenhanger, close to the Channel Tunnel.
Although one of the smaller tracks in the Arena Leisure stable of six courses, Folkestone has always had a loyal bedrock support, but in 2002, this expanded to such a degree that attendances over the year increased by 30 per cent and were 50 per cent higher at some fixtures. The trend, it seems, is set to continue, as annual membership levels for 2003 are 40 per cent higher than a year ago, while restaurant and corporate attendance bookings are also greatly increased.
It is not only the crowd figures that offer encouragement for a secure future. The return to Folkestone of caterers Letheby & Christopher has enhanced food quality and variety in all food outlets; and the media rights deal and lunchtime television broadcasts have also heightened interest and broadened income.
Kate Hills has been promoted to become Marketing Manager at Folkestone, a second strand to the similar post she holds at Lingfield, which with its much higher level of fixtures, especially in the winter period, takes the majority of her time.
Kate's affections, however, are firmly with Folkestone. Born and bred as well as living in Kent, Kate comes from a horse racing and riding background and identifies with the type of racing that Folkestone offers throughout the year. She said: "People might think that being the only track in Kent means that Folkestone is out on a limb, but I actually believe it is a great location. The area is not only the gateway, via the Tunnel, between Europe and London, but is also a fast developing business centre.
"We have been able to build relationships with some of the larger companies in the area and joined in some of their marketing activities. Several new charity race days have become very well supported, while the holiday coastal resorts near the course have been targeted for special offers and incentives," said Kate.
The present phase of refurbishment began with the now completed overhaul of the stable lads' hostel. Arena realise the importance of treating the people who look after valuable horses with a suitable level of comfort. To that end, the old dormitory-style accommodation has been converted to individual rooms with televisions and a communal relaxation area. It is fully heated and has been redecorated throughout.
A similar refurbishment will now be focused on all the bars and eating areas on the track. Special attention will be paid to the highly-successful Glover restaurant, where racegoers can enjoy an excellent lunch and retain a table with a first-class view of the finishing straight. Demand for this facility has been very strong, and Folkestone have decided to extend it to increase capacity. At the same time, some grandstand boxes will be enlarged to cater for bigger corporate entertainment parties.
A central element of the refurbishment is the modernisation of the owners, trainers and members bar, close to the paddock. The public viewing bar at the top of the old stand and the Paddock Café, which will become a self-service brasserie restaurant, will also be renovated and redecorated over the next few months as Folkestone aims to continue its development as a vibrant, dual-purpose country course.
