THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

CHELTENHAM, SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2003

3.10pm, Ladbroke Trophy Handicap Chase (Listed), 2m 5f

GOING: Good to Soft
BP= best price offered by Ladbrokes, William Hill, Coral Eurobet and the Tote

1) 12-2 Lady Cricket Martin Pipe 9-11-12b Tony McCoy
Grand performer round Cheltenham and goes well fresh but is probably still too high in the handicap and therefore no value.

BP= 11/2 Coral

2) -212 Poliantas Paul Nicholls 6-11-02 Ruby Walsh
Progressive this season but no match for Edredon Bleu last time at Wincanton and handicapper is catching up with him.

BP= 10/1 Ladbrokes, William Hill

3) P331 Ballinclay King Ferdy Murphy 9-11-00 Davy Russell
Returned from the doldrums with a win well here last time. This is more competitive, he is 12lb higher in the ratings and probably needs softer ground to be seen at his best.

BP= 8/1 Ladbrokes, William Hill

4) 13-2 Katarino Nicky Henderson 8-10-12 Marcus Foley (3)
Former Triumph Hurdle winner, who has had his problems. Fair reappearance behind Ballinclay King last time and now 12lb better off. Faster ground will suit but this price is not very generous..

BP= 6/1 Ladbrokes, Coral

5) 1114 Horus Martin Pipe 8-10-11 Barry Geraghty
Former decent hunter who has made a good transition to handicaps, but disappointed here last time over a longer trip and is another one the handicapper may have in his grip. The return to this distance is interesting though.

BP= 13/2 William Hill

6) 3-36 Blowing Wind Martin Pipe 10-10-10 Tom Scudamore
Goes well here but is more a National horse these days and has not shown much form so far this season.

BP= 25/1 Ladbrokes, Tote

7) 1P-1 Run For Paddy Heather Dalton 7-10-09 Paul Hourigan
Useful novice last season who put made a winning reappearance at Chepstow in October. Any drying of the ground would suit and open to further improvement but has yet to prove he is up to this class.

BP= 11/1 except Coral

8) -212 Just Jasmine Kevin Bishop 11-10-06 Barry Keniry
Consistent mare but not a great win record overall. Should go well, but likely to find one to two too good again and ground may not be soft enough.

BP= 12/1 except Coral

9) -111 Hermes Iii Nicky Henderson 8-10-05 Richard Johnson
French import who put up bold display to win on British chasing debut last time. Could well be more to come but this is a much tougher race.

BP= 8/1 Coral

10) -F13 Shamawan Jonjo O’Neill 8-10-04 Noel Fehily
Has been running over two miles but looks as if he will get further. Could still be well handicapped and another to consider - probably good value.

BP= 12/1 Tote and Coral

11) 316P Akarus Martin Pipe 8-10-01 Mr Jamie Moore(7)
Another French import but didn’t shown much when pulling up at Kempton on British debut last week.

BP= 66/1 William Hill

12) -11U Halexy Venetia Williams 8-10-00 Brian Crowley
Won here earlier in the season before unseating last time behind Ballinclay King but form has not worked out so well.

BP= 8/1 Ladbrokes, Tote

13) 5373 Be My Manager Henrietta Knight 8-10-00 Jim Culloty
Useful novice a couple of seasons ago and is a very big price on his best form. Amateur ridden on to of his last three starts. Also tried over three miles which did not work, He will be suited by the fast pace and will be making his run up the hill. Terrific each way value.

BP=25/1 Tote

14) -1F2 Arlequin De Sou Philip Hobbs 9-10-00b Paul Flynn
Good enough form at a lower level and likes Cheltenham but likely to struggle from 6lb out of the handicap and with the ground not that soft.

BP= 33/1 Ladbrokes and Coral

15) 8/F4 Banner Gale Dr Philip Pritchard 14-10-00 Vince Slattery
No chance whatsoever from almost 3st out of the handicap.

BP= 1,000/1 Ladbrokes

SUMMARY
BE MY MANAGER is great value at 25/1 each way and probably 20/1 as well. Worth a punt.

GOOD LUCK
