IRISH THOROUGHBRED NEWS
GOSSAMER RETIRED TO STUD
The brilliant Sadler's Wells filly Gossamer, winner of the Group 1 Entenmann's 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh in May, has been retired.
The highlight of an unbeaten two-year-old career came at Ascot where she won the Group 1 Fillies Mile. Gossamer finished third to Rock Of Gibraltar in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp in October of this year.
On her final start was a close fifth behind Starine in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Arlington.
SENSATIONAL BEEF OR SALMON LANDS ERICSSON
On only his third start over fences, Beef Or Salmon landed the EUR150,000 Grade 1 Ericsson Chase at Leopardstown.
The star novice arrived with his challenge at the final fence and quickened in devastating style to beat Colonel Braxton by six lengths.
He had some highly talented and experienced rivals trailing in his wake and this performance arguably makes him the leading staying chaser in the country.
Now the winner of six of his 12 starts, Beef Or Salmon was sold at Tattersalls (Ireland) for IR5,400gns as a 3yo and in Goffs for Ir6,500gns as a 4yo.
MATE SIMPLY THE BEST AT KEMPTON
Best Mate landed yet another significant success when winning the Grade 1 Pertemps King George VI Chase at Kempton.
The Irish-bred son of Un Desperado, last season's outstanding staying chaser, gamely held off Marlborough (Strong Gale) to win for trainer Henrietta Knight and jockey Tony McCoy.
Best Mate was sold for just IR2,500gns as a foal by Tattersalls (Ireland) November Sale in 1995.
This season's renewal of the King George proved to be a triumph for Irish breeding as the first five horses home were all bred in Ireland.
VALUABLE COMPENSATION FOR KIELY'S STAR
Liss A Paoraigh, runner-up to Limestone Lad on three occasions already this season, scored a deserved success in the EUR75,000 Evening Herald December Festival Hurdle.
The talented daughter of Husyan made all the running to win by 25 lengths from Stage Affair and was never seriously threatened as she galloped clear throughout.
Trainer John Kiely hopes to run his winner in the AIG (Europe) Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown next month but at this stage is not too keen on bringing Liss A Paoraigh to Cheltenham.
INTELLIGENT SUCCESS AT LIMERICK
The Jessica Harrington-trained Intelligent won the EUR45,000 Grade 2 Guinness Greenmount Park Novice Chase at Limerick.
The Irish-bred scored by five lengths from favourite Barrow Drive to record his fourth success and his second over fences.
Intelligent was sold at Tattersalls (Ireland) Derby Sale for IR12,000gns.
GRADE 2 SUCCESS FOR BE MY BELLE
Be My Belle landed the EUR45,000 Grade 2 William Neville & Sons Novice Chase at Leopardstown.
Although soundly beaten by Intelligent at Limerick a couple of days earlier, Be My Belle bounced back to win this valuable contest in fine style.
The daughter of Be My Native clearly appreciated the step up to three miles and she has now two of her four starts over fences.
LIMESTONE LAD MAKES IT 35 WINS
The amazing Limestone Lad recorded his 35th career win when taking the woodiesdiy.com Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown.
A real crowd favourite, he once again made all the running to win as he liked and came home nine lengths clear of Boss Doyle with Bannow Bay third.
Some observers are even of the opinion that the son of Aristocracy is still improving as he turns 11 years of age but there is little doubt that he will take all the beating in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham if the ground comes up soft.
The Bowe family who have looked after Limestone Lad so well throughout his career could well have another star in the shape of Solerina.
She landed her fourth success this season when easily winning the EUR50,000 Grade 2 paddypower.com Future Champions Novice Hurdle, a race Istabraq won at the beginning of his glittering career.
FLYER SHAPING UP WELL
Moscow Flyer, last season's Arkle winner at the Cheltenham Festival, bounced back to winning ways with success in the EUR45,000 Grade 2 Paddy Power Dial-A-Bet Chase.
The leading novice of last season, Moscow Flyer was unlucky to be brought down at Sandown last time but showed that he was none the worse for that experience with a comfortable five length win from Knife Edge.
The son of Moscow Society was bred by Edward Joyce and sold at Tattersalls (Ireland) Derby Sale for IR17,000gns.
GRADE 1 WIN FOR NAS NA RIOGH
Nas Na Riogh, a daughter of King's Theatre, coped admirably with testing underfoot conditions to win the Grade 1 Western Daily Press Finale Juvenile Hurdle at Chepstow.
The Irish-bred came home a clear winner and will now be trained for the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham.
NATIONAL VICTORY FOR SENSATION
Jonjo O'Neill's Mini Sensation (Be My Native) won the Grade 3 Coral Welsh National Handicap Chase at Chepstow for leading owner J P McManus.
Out of the Strong Gale mare Minorettes Girl, Mini Sensation certainly lived up to his name as he went clear from the final fence to win by seven lengths.
O'NEILL STRIKES WITH PROMISING COOLNAGORNA
Coolnagorna continues to go from strength to strength and landed a hat trick of wins when taking the Grade 1 Stan James Challow Novices' Hurdle at Newbury.
Now the winner of three of his five starts for Jonjo O'Neill, Coolnagorna was clear into the straight and won by all of 29 lengths under jockey Tony McCoy.
The winner was bought at the 1997 Goffs December Sale for Ir2,800gns.
PIPE WINS AGAIN WITH CONTROL MAN
The Martin Pipe-trained Control Man made it two win from as many starts when taking the Grade 1 Galaxy 101 'Championship' Stakes National Hunt Flat Race at Chepstow.
Bought as a store horse in Ireland by owner David Johnston, Control Man (Glacial Storm) was an impressive winner on his debut at Plumpton and kept on strongly here to maintain his unbeaten record. He certainly looks like one to follow and connections believe that he will be at his best when racing over fences.
GOFFS ACCEPTING FINAL ENTRIES
Final entries are now being taken of the Goffs February Mixed Sale.
The sale runs from February 10-12 and those interested can contact Goffs on 045 886600.
