TOTE SPONSORED RACES FORM BACKBONE OF £110,000 SCOOP6 ROLLOVER WEEKEND
Three top-class Tote sponsored races form half the puzzle punters will need to crack to give themselves a chance of landing the rollover cash in this Saturday's Scoop6, with racing from Kempton, Catterick and Wincanton hosting the six legs.
Two of the races-the £80,000 Tote Exacta Chase from Kempton and the £40,000 Tote Tolworth Hurdle from Wincanton-have only gone ahead after the Tote stepped in take over the sponsorship following the abandonment of fixtures due to the recent freeze. The two new sponsorships complement the £50,000 Tote Lanzarote Hurdle to be run for the fifth consecutive year under the Tote banner.
No winners on the Scoop6 last Saturday mean £61,095 sits in the Win pool, while £52,261 lines the Bonus prize fund.
"It's great to see three top-class races all under Tote sponsorship making up the backbone of what is a top quality Scoop6 card this Saturday," said Tote spokesman Jeremy Scott.
"With clues to potential Cheltenham Festival stars littering the cards up and down the country, tomorrow is a day any punter worth their salt won't want to miss, and with over £110,000 already lining the rollover pools, who knows, a Scoop6 winner tomorrow could find themselves owning a Festival runner!"
Saturday's Scoop6 legs are:
leg 1 1.50 Kempton - Sunbury Antiques Market Handicap
leg 2 2.05 Catterick - Skybet.com Handicap Hurdle
leg 3 2.25 Kempton - Tote Exacta Chase
leg 4 3.00 Kempton - Tote Scoop6 Lanzarote Hurdle
leg 5 3.15 Wincanton - Tote Tolworth Hurdle
leg 6 3.35 Kempton - Fulwell Handicap Chase
TATTERSALLS DISMAYED AT GOFFS CHANGES
Commenting on the decision by Goffs to move the Orby Yearling Sale into the dates already occupied by the Tattersalls (Ireland) September Yearling Sale, Tattersalls (Ireland) Chairman Edmond Mahony said:
"We are deeply dismayed by this extraordinary decision by Goffs which can not benefit clients of either Company, least of all Irish breeders.
"Goffs has stated that its decision was 'forced upon them' in response to the changes to our own sales dates in England which we announced a full five months ago in August. This is plainly not the case. In rearranging our sales dates to avoid congestion and to allow four weeks for four different sales, we took painstaking care to avoid clashes with any other sale in the Northern Hemisphere. Furthermore we would never have contemplated changes if they had involved clashes with competing sales.
"We are horrified not only that Goffs has chosen to move in on a successful and established Irish Yearling Sale, but also at the utter disregard it has shown for Irish Breeders who have made the Tattersalls (Ireland) September Yearling Sale such a success. It is even more bizarre following a meeting called by the Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association at which we were advised of Goffs' disquiet at our dates changes. We promptly offered to make mutually acceptable changes in 2004 if the same doubts persisted after the 2003 sales season.
"The Goffs decision is regrettable at best. In deference to the interests of all Irish breeders, Tattersalls (Ireland) will now hold the 2003 September Yearling Sale from 23rd - 25th September. The Houghton Yearling Sale will have to revert to its former dates and will take place on October 1st and 2nd, while the October Yearling Sale Part 1 will have to move a week later and will run from 7th - 11th October.
"It is with regret that we are altering our carefully thought out sales dates changes, but having worked hard to establish the Tattersalls (Ireland) September Yearling Sale, we are not prepared to sacrifice its long term future or further jeopardise the interests of Irish breeders".
FANTASTIC RACING ON PILLAR PROPERTY CHASE DAY
Cheltenham's £80,000 Pillar Property Chase, over three miles, one and a half furlongs, is a fantastic prospect, with the race usually having a strong influence on the chasing championship, the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, which takes place on March 13.
Three of the last seven runnings of the Pillar Property Chase, run this year on Saturday, January 25, have generated the winner of the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same season.
The 2000 Pillar Property Chase was won by the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble, who returned to Prestbury Park two months later to take chasing's Blue Riband event.
The 1999 renewal saw See More Business, who had been successful in the 1998 Pillar Property, finish third to Cyfor Malta and the Paul Nicholls-trained chaser then captured the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup shortly afterwards.
See More Business also won this race in 2001 but was denied the opportunity to capture the Gold Cup again when that year's National Hunt Festival was cancelled, though he ran well to be third in the 2002 Gold Cup.
One Man took the 1997 Pillar Property Chase, the first occasion that the fine chaser had won at Cheltenham, and, after his sixth in that year's Gold Cup, he returned to Prestbury Park in 1998 to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Festival.
The big Cheltenham chase at the end of January did not happen in 1996 because of the weather but the 1995 Pillar Property Chase was won by Master Oats, who beat the previous year's heroine Dubacilla by 15 lengths. The pair returned two months later to compete in the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, filling the same positions and by exactly the same margin.
Rince Ri, who was successful last year in the Pillar Property Chase, finished a good third in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown the following month but then did not run again during the season.
Pillar Property has generously backed this prestigious race since 1995 and there is a strong supporting card.
This is headed by the £75,000 Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle whose prize money has been boosted by 50% from last year.
The Robert Alner-trained Kates Charm, who appreciated the heavy going, got the better of Montalcino in 2002.
Lady Rebecca made the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle her own in the three previous years There was hardly a dry eye in the house when Venetia Williams' charge came up the hill to win well in 2001 and so complete her treble.
The calibre of the winners of the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle is exemplified by Large Action, who was twice placed in hurdling's top event, the Smurfit Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham's National Hunt Festival in March (third to Flakey Dove in 1994 and runner-up to Alderbrook the following season). Flakey Dove herself had won this contest in 1994, just less than two months before she took up her place in the annals of racing history under a fine ride from Richard Dunwoody for Herefordshire-based trainer Richard Price.
Crystal Spirit, the Ian Balding-trained 1991 Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle winner, was successful earlier in the season in the Cleeve Hurdle. A year earlier Balding Snr's brother Toby won the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle with Beech Road who, the previous season, had caused a major shock when winning the Smurfit Champion Hurdle at 50/1.
A fine seven-race programme begins at 12.55pm with the £15,000-added Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Novices' Handicap Hurdle, won last year by Polar Red who went on to take the Sunderlands Imperial Cup at Sandown.
The £20,000-added Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase follows at 1.30pm and Martin Pipe and Tony McCoy, responsible for Polar Red, followed up with Royal Auclair who captured the Cathcart Chase at the National Hunt Festival at Cheltenham less than two months later.
The £40,000 Ladbroke Trophy Chase (3.10pm), a handicap over two miles, five furlongs, has been won by plenty of good chasers including Foly Pleasant (2002), Young Spartacus (2001), Papillon (1998), Dublin Flyer (1997), Couldn't Be Better (1995) and Waterloo Boy (1994).
The £30,000 Wragge & Co Finesse Juvenile Novices' Hurdle (3.45pm) is one of the top races of the season for juvenile hurdlers, with Vol Solitaire (2002), Jair Du Cochet (2001), Mister Banjo (2000) and the subsequent Smurfit Champion Hurdler Hors La Li III (1999) the last four victors.
The great afternoon is rounded off by the £20,000-added Western Daily Press Handicap Hurdle which has been won by a Pipe-trained horse in three of the last four years, Copeland (2002), The French Furze (2000) and Rainwatch (1999). Landing Light, the 2001 scorer, has turned into one of Britain's best hurdlers.

LATEST DUBAI ACTION
Kiaran McLaughlin and Willie Supple strengthened their claims for the forthcoming Dubai Racing Carnival with a winning treble and dominating two important lead-ups at Nad Al Sheba last Thursday night.
Al Ash Hab made it a winning treble for the McLaughlin-Supple combination when leading throughout to win the final event.
Seattle Fitz restored a tarnished reputation cemented his place in the UAE 2000 Guineas after his defeat of Channel Four in the UAE 2000 Guineas Prep, while stablemate Nowrass will now go for the Al Rashidiya after his success in the Al Rashidiya Prep.
The US$250,000 Group III UAE 2000 Guineas is on February 13 with the AED350,000 Al Rashidiya on February 6.
Seattle Fitz, the equal top price at the Pearls of Dubai International Sale disappointed at his previous effort when unplaced behind the South African Victory Moon in the Al Nakhlee however that form was turned around with his impressive performance last Thursday and McLaughlin said that he would definitely run in the UAE 2000 Guineas.
Awaiting him there will be a return clash with Victory Moon as well as a guaranteed powerful representation from Godolphin.
From there Seattle Fitz will run in the AED500,000 Pearls of Dubai International Sales Stakes on March 6 where a win there would make him exempt from the ballot on the US$2,000,000 Group II UAE Derby on March 29.
Nowrass, formerly with Godolphin, returned to his best form with his defeat of the South African Kelly and Lightning Arrow.
Supple's treble took his seasonal tally to 15, just six behind leader Wayne Smith. Ted Durcan, currently lying second narrowed Smith's gap to five in the defence of his jockey's title when winning aboard Mr Magistrate in the opening event while apprentice Trevor Naughton registered his first win at Nad Al Sheba, scoring on the impressive Yajree for Allan Smith.
Qatari trainer Alban de Mieulle struck again in one of the Emirates' major Purebred Arabian features when his quality sprinter Mutabahi won the fourth running of the Group II Bani Yas.
Mutabahi, who caused a minor surprise when defeating the previously unbeaten Big Easy in the Al Ruwais at Ghantoot last season, again proved superior to that horse when winning the Bani Yas.
