WEIGHTS REVEALED FOR THE FREEPHONE STANLEY LINCOLN
Smirk heads record 137 entries with 9st 11lb
The weights for the £100,000 Freephone Stanley Lincoln, run over the straight mile at Doncaster on Saturday, March 22, 2003, are headed by the David Elsworth-trained Smirk, who has been allotted 9st 11lb, it is revealed today, Wednesday, January 15, 2003.
The five-year-old is one of a record 137 horses to have been entered for the first major event of the 2003 Flat Turf season. The Michael Tabor-owned Smirk was extremely progressive last season winning a valuable handicap at Glorious Goodwood, before rounding off the campaign with a smooth five-length victory in the Listed Ben Marshall Stakes at Newmarket in November.
Elsworth, who won the Freephone Stanley Lincoln in 1983 with Mighty Fly, also has Finished Article (8st 3lb) and Highland Reel (8st) in the famous handicap.
Barry Hills has fond memories of the Freephone Stanley Lincoln, having funded his setting-up as a trainer through a large bet on the John Oxley-trained Frankincense, successful in 1968, while employed as travelling head lad to Oxley.
Hills' two entries this year include Pablo, who is the likely ante-post favourite. The four-year-old, who won a showcase handicap at Newmarket in November on his last start, is on a mark of 8st 11lb, while Hills' other candidate Marlo has been given 7st 7lb.
Bryan Smart's Atlantic Ace (8st 8lb) is also prominent in the early betting at 25/1, while the Thirsk-based trainer's other entry Creskeld (6st 11lb) is a possible for the Stanleybet.com Spring Mile, a contest for horses that fail to make the cut for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln which has a safety limit of 24, held the day before (Friday, March 21).
Smart said today: "Atlantic Ace will go down the same road as last year - the Lincoln [unplaced in 2002 behind Zucchero], a couple of conditions races, a couple of handicaps and then he'll run in the William Hill Mile at Goodwood [the head runner-up to Smirk].
"He's wintered really well and I'm very happy with him. He looks great and he's just back in work now. Whether or not he'll have a prep race on the all-weather, we'll have to wait and see. He has run on the all-weather and, if there was a mile race somewhere like Southwell, then I might give him a run but I haven't decided yet. He's in good order and I'm looking forward to running him at Doncaster."
Creskeld has won two of his last three races on the all-weather at Southwell since November. "I'd like to get Creskeld in the Spring Mile - that's why he was entered in the Lincoln," explained the handler.
"He's come on and he'll carry on running - he'll probably have another one or possibly two outings before Doncaster and hopefully I'll get in the Spring Mile with him."
Andrew Balding, who gained his first winner with a licence in his own name at Lingfield on Saturday after taking over from his father Ian on January 1, has seven possibles, with the most weight being allotted to Bourgainville (9st 3lb). His contingent is completed by Dumaran (8st 11lb), Pentecost (8st 7lb), Passing Glance (8st 7lb), Golden Chalice (8st 3lb), Travelling Band (7st 9lb) and Highland Shot (6st 9lb).
The four Irish-trained hopes for the 2003 renewal of the Freephone Stanley Lincoln are led by Avorado, trained by Jim Bolger, on 8st 13lb. The Royal Academy gelding was a very useful handicapper in 2001, and his one success last term came in a mile contest at Cork in October. The others are the Ted Walsh-trained Atlantic Rhapsody (8st 11lb), Private Ben (8st 7lb), trained by Jessica Harrington, and the Willie Mullins-trained Arch Stanton (7st).
Steven Clarke, General Manager at Doncaster, said: "The £25,000 additional prize money this year for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln, backed by Stanley Racing for the first time, gives a record total prize fund £100,000 which is well worth aiming for.
"The unveiling of the weights shows that we have in prospect one of the most competitive Lincolns ever run at Doncaster and, with the race just over two months away, there will be plenty of excitement in the build-up."
