RECORD 137 ENTRIES FOR THE FREEPHONE STANLEY LINCOLN

Zucchero on course to defend his crown

A modern-day record of 137 entries has been received for the first major race of the turf Flat racing season, the £100,000 Freephone Stanley Lincoln, run over the straight mile at Doncaster on Saturday, March 22, 2003.

The number of entries is well up on last year's figure of 111 and the 108 in 2001, while there were 132 entries in 2000, 78 in 1999, 107 in 1998 and 93 in 1997.

The Freephone Stanley Lincoln has received a significant boost in prize money for 2003, up by £25,000 to give a total prize fund of £100,000, in the first year of sponsorship by Britain's fourth-biggest bookmakers, Stanley Racing.

Andrew Balding, who on January 1 took over the training licence from his father Ian, has the most entries, with seven horses engaged - Bourgainville, Dumaran, Passing Glance, Pentecost, Golden Chalice, Travelling Band and Highland Shot.

Whatcombe-based Paul Cole has won the Freephone Stanley Lincoln three times in the past six years with Kuala Lipis (1997), John Ferneley (2000) and Nimello (2001). This year he has six possible contenders in the shape of Cornelius, Certain Justice, Scent Of Victory, Camberley, The Judge and Yakimov.

Zucchero was triumphant 12 months ago and trainer David Arbuthnot today confirmed that the seven-year-old is after the double, something no horse has achieved since the Lincoln has been staged at Doncaster since 1965.

The Lambourn-based trainer commented: "It is currently the plan for Zucchero to run in the Freephone Stanley Lincoln again this year.

"He only had one run at Sandown after the race last year as he injured his back quite badly that day and I couldn't get him ready again before the end of the season, so I thought I would wait and try and prepare him for the Lincoln this year.

"He is fine at the moment and has just started out on his training this year. He won without a prep run last year and it depends on whether he is ready for a run before Doncaster or whether we go straight there this year - I wouldn't worry either way.

"I don't expect my other entry Fabrian will get into the Lincoln and I entered him hoping that he might get into the Stanleybet.com Spring Mile."

Adiemus, who went down by a head to Zucchero last year could reoppose while the fourth, fifth and sixth from 2002 - Thihn, Scotty's Future and Norton - are also engaged again.

There are potential overseas challengers, with four from Ireland - Arch Stanton, Atlantic Rhapsody, Avorado and Private Ben - and one from Spain. Lord Protector, trained at Mijas racecourse in southern Spain by Irishman Eddie Creighton, finished seventh in the 2002 Lincoln for David Arbuthnot.

Yorkshire trainers are well represented with David Nicholls having five entries, while Lynda Ramsden, successful with High Premium a decade ago, could run the progressive Lingo, a winner on the corresponding card 12 months ago.

Horses that fail to make the cut for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln, which has a maximum field of 24, will be eligible to run in the Stanleybet.com Spring Mile the day before, Friday, March 21. The draw for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln, where connections can choose their own draw position, will take place on Thursday, March 20, with a celebrity picking the stalls positions.

Steven Clarke, General Manager at Doncaster, said: "We are thrilled to be able to announce record entries for the £100,000 Freephone Stanley Lincoln.

"Doncaster racecourse is extremely grateful for the support of Stanley Racing and we look forward to a very exciting contest."

Weights for the Freephone Stanley Lincoln will be revealed on Wednesday, January 15.

CHELTENHAM SEEKS NEW SPONSOR FOR THE OPEN'S FEATURE RACE

Thomas Pink will not be taking up the option to continue sponsorship of the £100,000 Thomas Pink Gold Cup at The Open after three years of backing the feature race at the three-day Cheltenham November meeting.

Cheltenham is now looking for a new sponsor to support the well-known handicap chase, the first jump classic of each National Hunt season.

During Thomas Pink's sponsorship, the race grew in stature and the value rose from £80,000 to £100,000.

Over the past three years, The Open has prospered through the support of Thomas Pink and a number of other key sponsors and this year offered prize money of more than £540,000. Attendances have risen by 12 per cent from 2000 to 2002 to over 62,000.

The chase was run prior to 2000 as the Murphy's Gold Cup and before that the Mackeson Gold Cup, with both sponsored by Whitbread for 40 years from the inaugural running in 1960.

Champion jump trainer Martin Pipe has won the three runnings that Thomas Pink has been associated with, via Lady Cricket (2000), Shooting Light (2001) and Cyfor Malta (2002).

Peter McNeile, Cheltenham's Commercial Manager, commented today: "The Open has thrived with the support of Thomas Pink and all our other sponsors, further consolidating its status as the course's highest-profile event outside of the Festival.

"We look forward to finding a new sponsor for one of Cheltenham's major races and working with them and our existing sponsors to build on The Open in 2003."

TOTE STEPS IN TO SPONSOR VALUABLE OPPORTUNITIES AT KEMPTON & WINCANTON NEXT SATURDAY

The Tote today announced that following the abandonment of turf racing at Warwick, Ascot and Uttoxeter on Saturday, it has agreed to sponsor 2 high class races next weekend for horses that have missed out during the recent freeze. The Tote Exacta Chase, worth £80,000, will take place at Kempton on a card that already features the £50,000 Tote Scoop6 Lanzarote Hurdle. A limited handicap over two miles, it aims to attract those horses due to run in the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot and has exactly the same conditions as that event. The Tote is also sponsoring the Grade 1 Tote Tolworth Hurdle, run over 2 miles for novices, worth £40,000, now due to take place at Wincanton, which has been transferred from Sandown via Warwick.

Tote Chairman Peter Jones said: "The recent spate of abandonments has been difficult for everyone in racing, so I'm delighted that we can play a major part in providing these two valuable opportunities at Kempton and Wincanton.

I hope that owners and trainers support our initiative and provide two more fascinating contests on what is already shaping up to be a fantastic weekend for National Hunt fans who have been starved of high class competitive action in the last 10 days."

The Tote is racing's largest commercial sponsor and will spend around £3m on race sponsorship in 2003.

BETFAIR TO SPONSOR ALL RACES AT PLUMPTON ON MONDAY

Betfair opens its racing sponsorship programme for 2003 on Monday afternoon when the leading betting exchange sponsors all the races on the card at Plumpton, which looks set to feature the first jump racing in Britain for a week.

David McHarg, Plumpton's Clerk of the Course, said today: "We have no inspections planned at all and could almost have raced this afternoon (Friday). The forecast is for no frost on Sunday night, when the temperature is predicted to be 4 degrees, and for a sunny day on Monday when temperatures should reach 9 degrees. So unless something very weird happens, we will be racing on Monday."

The total prize money on offer for the 6 races is £43,500. The 12.45pm betfair.com Handicap Hurdle will be the lunchtime race on Channel 4.

In terms of number of races, Betfair is the 4th biggest sponsor of UK horse racing on top of its recently launched sponsorship campaign in Ireland.

Mark Davies, Betfair's Director of Communications, said, "Alongside its voluntary contributions to racing charities, race sponsorship is a very important part of Betfair's commitment to horse racing. We are delighted to be starting our 2003 programme with a jumps meeting that will hopefully not succumb to the weather and that has attracted entries from as far afield as Germany."

LATEST DUBAI ACTION

Champion jockey Ted Durcan continued to cut into the gap of current leader Wayne Smith in the race for the 2002/2003 title with a winning treble at Jebel Ali on Friday.

Going into the weekend Smith was eight clear of Gary Hind and nine in front of Durcan however that lead was reduced to six with Hindıs double at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday night and Durcanıs treble the following afternoon.

Smith is suspended for Sunday nightıs HH The President Cup meeting at Abu Dhabi providing Durcan and Hind with further opportunities to cut into the lead, Durcan riding Conflict and Hind on Historic Treble in the main event of the evening.

Durcan began with Tala Yaıs victory in the 60-90 rated handicap over 1,000m before Avionicıs impressive debut in the Limited Conditions event. He completed the treble when Northern Rock made it four wins from five starts this season in the 70-100 rated handicap.

Tala Ya and Northern Rock are owned by Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, taking his seasonally tally to 34 wins and he is assured of a successful defence of his championship.

Al Kurdi continues to lead the race for the trainerıs championship, Tala Ya giving him 21st winner of the season while closest to him, Kiaran McLaughlin and defending champion Erwan Charpy also picked up winners with Saint Malo and Danidor respectively.

John Sadler prepared his 17th winner of the season, his winning double at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday night preceding the victory of Northern Rock on Friday.

Saint Maloıs victory provided apprentice Catherine Gannon with her first winner in the Emirates, the horse clearing out to win the 45-70 rated handicap by 11 lengths.

Richard Mullen enjoyed his most successful meeting of the season, combining with the Purebred Arabian Danidor and newcomer Golden Fitz for a winning double.

John Stack also continued his recent good run, combining with the Jaber Bittar-trained Saken to win the inaugural running of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum EAHS Maiden Plate, a 1,400m event for the Purebred Arabians bred in the UAE.
