CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING 2010, NEWMARKET
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
totesport.com CAMBRIDGESHIRE DAY, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2

A SUCCESSFUL THREE-DAY MEETING

Stephen Wallis, managing director of Newmarket Racecourses, was delighted with the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting.

"We had three top-class days racing and, as well as showcasing the very best of the sport to our regular racegoers, we have introduced racing to a number of people for the first time.

"Over the three days, 12,000 people attended the Adnams East Of England Festival of Food and Drink that was held in the Rowley Enclosure, with well over 3,000 of these gaining access to the food festival and racing free of charge.

"We hope to persuade some of those who came racing for the first time to return.

"Overall, the paid crowd of 9,857 today is over 1,000 up on last year and, over the three days, the crowd figures have bettered 2009 by more than 1,500."

£300,000 Tattersalls Millions 2-Y-O Fillies’ Trophy

MASAYA SCORES FOR LYRICAL CLIVE

Clive Brittain danced his customary shuffle as Masaya returned to the winner’s enclosure after seeing off 19 rivals to capture the £300,000 Tattersalls Million 2-Y-O Fillies’ Trophy.

“Cheveley Park eat your heart out; 1000 Guineas next year, the secret is here,” rapped the septuagenarian trainer in reference to yesterday’s impressive Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes heroine Hooray.

20/1 chance Masaya had finished a staying-on third to Khor Sheed in the £100,000 Tattersalls Millions Fillies’ Auction Stakes over six furlongs of the Rowley Mile last time and the Dansili filly relished the extra furlong as she made virtually all to clinch the £167,338 first prize.

Brittain’s charge reversed placings with £100,000 Tattersalls Millions Fillies’ Auction Stakes runner-up Tale Untold, who was a short-head second, while 13/8 favourite Together was a further neck away in third after drifting left across the course inside the final furlong.

Brittain continued: “We’ve had a bit of a lean time but when you put me on a diet, I come out strong. She’s a tough little filly. You see the superstars, well mine are superstars in my eyes.

“I told him (Tom Queally) to ride the race as he found it. She travelled well and they had to come by her. She was third in the race last week and I was not sure how the ground would suit her but it suited her all right. We’ll look at the 1000 Guineas - the windmills will be tilting at us - but that will be it for the year.”

The Saeed Manana-owned Masaya was a 140,000 guineas purchase from last year’s Tattersalls October Sale Book One.

Winning rider Tom Queally said: “She stuck her head out and really tried for me. It was nice when we got the verdict - personally I didn’t think that we had got there as I went by but luckily it went our way.

“I had my head down and was pushing. I actually thought Hughsie had got me and I said to him whether the one on the far side had got us both. When you are in a ding-dong battle like that, you just have to keep your head down and keep trying.

“Clive didn’t give me any instructions and she jumped out and was happy in front. At halfway I thought that we were going really well so I gave her a little bit of rein and she kept lengthening. She was really trying and that is half the battle won.

“It can be difficult to make ground up here because, when you run down into the dip - that last 100 yards, almost a furlong - it can be quite tough. It helps when you have got the animal underneath you.”

BREEDERS’ CUPJUVENILE FILLIES A POSSIBILITY FOR TALE UNTOLD

Trainer Richard Hannon reported that the filly Tale Untold, who finished second in the Tattersalls Millions 2YO Fillies’ Trophy, might now be in line for a trip to America.

“She is a nice filly, I am delighted with her performance. We might be heading to the Breeders’ Cup for the Juveniles Fillies race now,” he said.

Bloodstock agent Gordian Troeller, who was with Hannon and representing Tale Untold’s owner Mr Marc Keller, continued: “She is eligible for the Breeders’ Cup,” he said. “Mr Keller is an American and would love to have her run at the meeting.

“We will see how she comes out of this, but taking her to America is a definite possibility.”

Troeller bought Tale Untold for Keller from previous owners Trevor Stewart and Anna Doyle. The filly had cost Peter Doyle Bloodstock 26,000gns at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales, Book 1.

John Gosden, trainer of the fourth-placed filly Aneedah said: “She ran great. I will probably put her away now.”

JOCKEYS REPORT ON THE GROUND AFTER THE FIRST

Tom Queally, on board the short head winner Masaya, said: "It is a bit dead and their getting in to it."

Richard Hughes, rider of second placed Tale Untold, said: "Dead."

Johnny Murtagh, partner of the third Together, said: "Soft."

William Buick, rider of the fourth home Aneedah, said: "Soft."

Colm O'Donoghue, partner of Queen Of Spain, said: "It is riding dead, but not tacky or holding. Considering the weather they have had it's not too bad."

Ryan Moore, on board Apace, described the going as: "Soft and Sticky."

Steve Drowne, partner of Daffydowndilly, said: "Soft and gooey."

Jimmy Fortune, rider of I Love Me, said: "Tacky."

Richard Hills, jockey of Musharakaat, said: "Tacky."

Frankie Dettori, jockey of Rumh, said: "Soft and a bit rough."

George Baker, on board Secret Love, said: "It is dead, gluey and hard work."

Michael Hills, jockey of Lucky Legs, said: "Tacky."

Race Two - £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy

TWO BIG WINNERS IN TWO DAYS FOR CHEVELEY PARK STUD

Fury justified 11/2 joint-favouritism in the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy when the convincing length and three quarters winner from Pisco Sour.

His victory made it two great days for owner breeder Cheveley Park Stud, which also enjoyed success at Newmarket on Friday in the Group One Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes with Hooray.

“You need a bit of luck and we had a good draw in 24,” said Fury’s trainer William Haggas. “He ran out the clear winner and I thought he quickly put the race to bed.

“He is a nice horse and did it well, considering that he had his first run only two weeks ago. His owner Mrs Thompson asked me before the race what I thought of him and I said that I think he could be a black-type horse.

“I have not got him entered in anything and he will probably be put away now. He will have an entry for the 2000 Guineas, but that is six months away - anything might happen by then!

“You need so much luck in maximum-field races like this and we got the luck by getting the draw on the outside. We have always like this horse - great nature and a good head on him - he might go to a higher level. We geared everything to this - there is a possibility of going for the Horris Hill but I have never liked that race so we will probably put him away.

“One of his hind limbs had a moderate trip in it when x-rayed at the sales and he was withdrawn. That is where I got lucky to get him.”

Fury, like Cheveley Park’s Hooray, is by the Irish National Stud stallion Invincible Spirit.

Mrs Patricia Thompson of Cheveley Park joked: “That is two juvenile winners in two days for us by the sire Invincible Spirit. The Irish National Stud will have to think about giving us a free nomination next spring!”

Fury, who was withdrawn from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sales Book 1, has been given a 33/1 quote by Paddy Power for next year’s 2000 Guineas.

The winning rider Kieren Fallon said: “I loved him when I rode him at Newbury but I was a bit worried about the ground today, but he has moved through it with no problem.

“It has dried out since yesterday so it is sticky and gluey now. It is a little bit like a ploughed field but you would expect that - there has been a lot of racing and a lot of horses have run down there. But he was moving through it nicely.

“It is very hard to compare that to a Group race but some horses there had very good speed figures. This fellow travelled there so well and he has a great attitude. He has done that smoothly and I think that he has a big future. I don’t think that the draw made a difference to this fellow - I think that he could have won from anywhere.”

Race Two Place Quotes -
£500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2-Y-O Trophy

SOUR LEAVES A SWEET TASTE IN DEFEAT

There were no sour grapes in defeat as Pisco Sour (14/1) thrilled owner Michael Kerr-Dineen when finishing a length and three-quarters second to Fury in the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2-Y-O Trophy to collect place money of £114,092.

The cleverly-named Lemon Drop Kid colt, successful over a mile on soft ground at Windsor last time, was doing his best work at the finish and trainer Hughie Morrison could now target Pattern company in France.

Kerr-Dineen commented: “The winner was very impressive so we are absolutely thrilled to bits. We knew he needed a mile plus and he had already won on soft. We would not have run him if the word firm had appeared at all in the going - we took our chance and he has run great.

“He’s a fantastic prospect for next year and he already wants a mile and a quarter really. Hughie was talking about a race in France for him before the end of the season. After that run today, clearly we would be disappointed if he’s not up to at least Group Three.

“Our other runner, Ryton Runner (18th), trained by John Gosden, is a horse to keep an eye on. He had no chance drawn one but he’s a Sadler’s Wells and he’s a serious horse for next year.”

Richard Hughes, rider of fourth-placed Measuring Time, said: “He ran a blinder. They were probably going a bit too fast for him, he’s a horse that will be upped in trip. He managed to get through the ground all right but not many love it like that.”

Race Three Win Quotes -
Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes (Group One)

SAHPRESA CRUISES INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS

Sahpresa today became only the second mare to complete back-to-back wins in the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes and the first since the mile contest attained Group One status.

The Rodolphe Collet-trained French raider was a shock winner when defeating Ghanaati at odds of 16/1 last year, but there was little surprise about the way she swept aside her 10 rivals to register a length and three-quarters triumph as the 9/2 second-favourite.

Sahpresa, who was given time to recover from a disappointing defeat in the Group Two Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, made a winning return to action in the Group Three Prix du Pin at Longchamp last month, a victory that put her spot on for today’s assignment.

Collet said: “That was impressive. I was afraid about the ground because at three she was not going on the very soft ground. She has never been trained on the turf in the morning, only on the all-weather sand.

“She’s now a mature mare. She came in late and I wasn’t sure what happened when she came in after the race at Royal Ascot. I thought there was something wrong because after one furlong as she was not going well. We had a virus in the yard at the start of the year so it must have been something like that.”

The five-year-old Sahm mare followed last season’s Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes success with a fine third, beaten a length and a quarter, in the Group One Mile Championship at Kyoto, Japan. That prestigious contest is once again on the agenda.

Collet revealed: “We are going to engage again in the Mile Championship because she ran last year and was impressive in the race - she was beaten by a collar and a collarb, so why not. She could go for that or also maybe Hong Kong. Hopefully they will call me Monday morning to invite her to the Mile Championship.

“I am very pleased - very pleased.”

Sahpresa was always cruising under Christophe Soumillon in the mile contest and quickened impressively to match the achievement of the Luca Cumani-trained Free Guest, who won the prize in 1984 and 1985 when the race was a Group Two 10-furlong contest.

Soumillon said: “She was always travelling very easily. She has a good turn of foot so sometimes you have to wait to go. What she did today was something special, winning two years in a row. In France, we know how hard it is to come to England and win Group One races.

“She is a great filly and I always knew that she was probably good enough to do a double like this. But we were a bit worried about her at the beginning of the season because the trainer had some problems, so you never know.

“She didn’t run a good race at Ascot but last time she won really well in France. Today we had a bit of a problem with the ground but she was travelling well in the race.

“I tried to come as late as possible but she came there a bit early and I needed to ride her hard to make her concentrate because she was trying to stop a little in front.

“Now she will probably go to Japan again. She is probably more mature this year and she can travel a long way. She ran well there last year but the ground was a bit too sticky for her - I think that she can do something more this year.”

STRAWBERRYDAIQUIRI PICKS UP GROUP 1 FORM FOR NEW OWNER

Strawberrydaiquiri justified her purchase by owner Fawzi Nass from Newsells Park Stud when coming home a length and three-quarters second in the Group 1 Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes. It is the first Group 1 form for the filly, who won the Windsor Forest Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot in June.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: “She never runs a bad race. She is a tough and honest filly and is always trying. We will see about another run this year, but she has had a hard race today and you never quite know with fillies at this time of year. She will definitely stay in training next year.”

The filly’s purchase by Nass was brokered by his stud manager Oliver St Lawrence.

“Oliver has not smiled for four days!” joked Stoute regarding St Lawrence, who was relieved that Strawberrydaiquiri’s purchase has already reaped rewards for her new owner.

Mark Johnston, trainer of the third-placed Rainfall, was delighted with the staying-on run from the Oasis Dream filly.

“That was very good,” he said. “I knew she would have to raise her game today and things would have to go her way, but she did it nicely.

“All ground comes alike to her and she coped well with the soft surface here. She is entered in a 6f race in Canada in the next two weeks, but it is very unlikely that she will go there.

“A mile was always her maximum for this year, but we will discuss her trip in future as she got the mile well today.”

Johnson was unsure as to whether Rainfall will remain with him for next season or will instead be transferred into training with Godolphin.

Race four winning quotes - totesport.com Cambridgeshire

THIRD TIME LUCKY FOR CREDIT SWAP

Credit Swap, who was having his third run in six days, made it a winning one when the 14/1 chance led home his 34 rivals in the totesport Cambridgeshire Handicap.

But the race came almost as an afterthought for trainer Michael Wigham.

“It is unbelievable,” said the delighted trainer, “We train him for this time of year and the consolation race for the Cambridgeshire was the race (run yesterday) we had in mind - we did not think we would get into this and we thought the ground would be too deep for him as he does not get a mile and a quarter.

“He was unlucky at Ascot on Sunday and again here on Thursday. But then the rain did not come and
we thought we might as well take our chance in this because he was in great form and one or two of my horses have half-needed their races. The horse is all heart and it is great that something like this can happen to smaller owners.”

Jockey Jim Crowley reported that he did not have a moment’s doubt throughout the race.

“Michael told me to ride him to get the trip as this is as far as he wants to go. The horse settled nicely and was always travelling well. It was just a matter of pressing the button and getting the gaps. And all the gaps came at the right time. He is as tough as old boots, travelled well throughout and really is a super horse.”

“It was the first time I have ridden the horse and he can be a bit keen, so the plan was to drop him out and creep away. He travelled lovely and everything went to plan - he got the gaps and he was always travelling nicely, which was a bit help. I was drawn 33.

“I wanted to stay near the far side and I probably could have but I saw the gap opening. I was just starting the horse rolling and getting his momentum going so I didn’t want to switch him again. He did it really well and that was his third run in nearly a week.

“He went super on the ground and I think that it probably brings out the best in him. It’s tacky ground - what you would call jumping ground. I was third or fourth on Take A Bow and this is a hot race to win - you need a Group horse usually to win it - and he has done it nicely. I was supposed to be going to Epsom but I got switched at the last minute at around about declaration time.”

Credit Switch’s registered owner Your Golf Travel is a partnership of Ross Marshall and Andrew Harding.

They were not at Newmarket to enjoy the victory - Marshall was acting as a best man at a wedding, while Harding, predictably given the name of the company ownership, was at the Ryder Cup.

Anne Marshall, Marshall’s mother, said: “This is wonderful. This horse has run three times in a week - he is just so tough.”

PLACED CONNECTIONS GIVE THEIR totesport.com CAMBRDIGESHIRE VERDICTS

Steele Tango was unable to overhaul the victorious Credit Swap as the 16/1 shot went down by three quarters of a length in the totesport.com Cambridgeshire.

The five-year-old was the second big-race runner-up of the week for trainer Roger Teale, whose Surrey Star was a short-head second in the Group Three Somerville Tattersall Stakes here on Thursday.

Teale said: “All I get is seconds! He has run a blinder. He loves it here and John (Fahy) has given him a beautiful ride.”

The Tony Martin-trained Pires (18/1) closed late to take third, a further half-length away, under Wayne Lordan, and is now bound for The Open at Cheltenham.

The trainer commented: “All going well, we will go to Cheltenham for the Greatwood Hurdle in mid-November. He’ll mix it through the winter but there’s no point saying where he’ll go long term - he wouldn’t handle real soft jumping ground.

“He’s shown us that he’s good enough for good Flat handicaps and we’ll look at Royal Ascot, so we’ve got next year to look forward to.”

Sandor was another length back in fourth at 50/1 for trainer Peter Makin and jockey Steve Drowne.

Makin said: “It was a fantastic race from a bad draw and he hated the ground. On firmer ground I think we would have been a bit closer. He’s quite a hardy horse and we might look to run him again before the end of the season.”

TRAINER JOHN GOSDEN REPORTS ON HIS THREE RUNNERS IN THE CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Trainer John Gosden had three runners in the Cambridgeshire: Taqleed who finished sixth, High Twelve who came home in 12th, and 7-1 favourite Nationalism, who finished 28th of 35 runners.

“I was delighted with Taqleed - he ran a nice race and was just found out by a lack of experience,” said Gosden.

“High Twelve was running a great race until he was practically knocked over and creamed at the furlong pole. I see suspensions have already been handed out.

“Nationalism had no chance from his draw in three. Currently, if you are drawn in 1,2,3 or 4 here you might as well stay at home as you have no chance. The winner came from draw 33, which I think tells its own story.”

Unfortunately for Gosden the horse that knocked over the Franny Norton-ridden High Twelve was Taqleed, who was ridden by Richard Hills. High Twelve, in turn, interfered with Pendragon, who was ridden by Richard Mullen.

Hills was found in breach of Rule (B) 54.1 and guilty of careless riding for allowing Taqleed to drift left away from his whip. Hills has been suspended for two days on Sunday, October 17 and Monday, October 18.

Race Five Win Quotes -
E.B.F. Jersey Lily Fillies’ Nursery

SOFT GROUND SUITS HONEYMEAD

Honeymead relished the seven-furlong trip and ease in the ground as she powered to a three quarters of a length victory over the fast-finishing Humdrum in the E.B.F. Jersey Lily Fillies’ Nursery.

The Richard Fahey-trained filly scored at 16/1 under Hayley Turner, while the Queen’s Humdrum was a 12/1 chance for trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Frankie McDonald.

Fahey said: “I think the ground has helped her a lot, being by Pivotal, and she’s relished the trip too. She’s a filly we have always liked and I ran her in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot but the ground was maybe a bit quick for her that day. There’s not a lot left so I don’t know whether we’ll run her again this year.”

Hannon was delighted with the way Humdrum flew up the final rise to the finish line but was otherwise rueing the Rowley Mile’s distinctive contours.

The handler commented: “It’s that dip again! She ran into that dip and then flew home when she hit the rising ground. She probably wants a mile too.

“I hope the handicapper doesn’t do anything to her. We’ll talk to Her Majesty and John (Warren - the Queen’s racing manager) and see whether she runs again this season. She’ll be a really nice filly next year.”

Race six - the totesport 0800 221 221 Handicapwin quotes

SHORT-HEAD VICTORY GOES TO CARNABY STREET

The prevailing soft ground on the Rowley Mile played to Carnaby Street's strengths in the totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap, the sixth race on the Cambridgeshire card. Ridden by Richard Hughes, the Noodles Racing-owned colt came home a short-head winner from Iver Bridge Lad.

"Carnaby Street loves it soft," said winning trainer Richard Hannon. "It is only the second time this year that he has run on the ground that he wants.

"He really is an autumn horse and might be turned out again quite quickly: he is in at York this week and will be in at Salisbury a week on Monday."

In the race for the Flat jockeys' championship, Hughes is now ten wins behind long-time leader Paul Hanagan, who rode two winners today at Redcar and is now on 165 wins for the season.

Race Six Place Quotes -
totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap

GAME LAD JUST FAILS TO BRIDGE GAP

Iver Bridge Lad missed out by a rapidly diminishing short-head in the totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap under Michael Hills.

John Ryan's charge was travelling sweetly with a furlong to race but had to switch wide around horses to make his challenge, by which time Richard Hughes had stolen a march on the victorious Carnaby Street. Iver Bridge Lad flew at the death but the line came a stride too soon for the 9/1 shot.

Ryan said: "He just didn't get the split when he wanted it. When he did get running, he just took a stride to get level and he was maybe a bit hesitant to put his head down and go but when he did, he really finished.

"Michael thought he had got it and Richard did too."

The blinkered top-weight was competing over seven furlongs for the first time since finishing sixth over the course and distance in the Listed Free Handicap in April.

Ryan continued: "He wears the headgear but he's a genuine horse. It just helps him concentrate and it helps the jockey. We put them on him to help him out because he seems to get a lot of bumps in his races and they just act as an aid for the jockeys. He's definitely not ungenuine, far from it. He's run from five furlongs to seven furlongs and he always finishes like that.

"The handicapper makes a difference to horses like this. When you've been a good two-year-old like he has, you tend to get penalised. We've never taken the soft option with him, we've taken on the best. He's honest and consistent - he always runs his best so the handicapper doesn't give an inch.

"Hopefully, he will keep going. There's York and Ascot coming up - he's in good form and you have got to let them run.

"He's not an All-Weather horse here but there is Dubai and potentially he could go there. He's at the top of his game and you can't ignore that kind of prize money."

Race Seven Win Quotes -
La Hogue Farm Shop & Café Handicap

HANNON MAKES IT A DOUBLE

Richard Hannon completed a 168/1 double when Ryan Moore guided Lethal Glaze to a two and a quarter-length triumph in the concluding La Hogue Farm Shop & Café Handicap.

The four-year-old Verglas gelding was returned at 25/1 for the mile and a half contest, and followed the success of 11/2 shot Carnaby Street in the preceding totesport 0800 221 221 Handicap.

It was the grey's fourth success on ground described as soft.

Moore commented: "He enjoys that ground and it didn't suit him coming up the middle like that because he always wants to go left but he did it nicely in the end."

totesport.com CAMBRIDGESHIRE - TRENDS

Betting
Market leaders have a relatively poor record in today’s £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire, with just 10 favourites (15.4%) prevailing in the 65 runnings since Word War II. While on the face of it this may not augur well for the John Gosden-trained Nationalism, who is currently the strong favourite at 4/1 with totesport, it should also be noted that since 1990 seven favourites have won including Blue Monday in 2005 and Pipedreamer, also trained by Gosden, in 2007.

The totesport.com Cambridgeshire is one of the most competitive handicaps of the entire season and has something of a reputation for shock results. The 2008 winner Tazeez was sent off at 25/1, while Spanish Don recorded a famous 100/1 victory in 2004. However, over two thirds of Cambridgeshire winners go off at less than 25/1, with only 20 post-war winners (31%) starting at 25/1 or greater.

Age
Open to three-year-olds and upwards, results since 1945 show that the older generation (four and above) with 38 winners (58%) has the upper hand.

However, winners older than six are certainly a rare occurrence with only Rambo’s Hall (7 in 1992) and Baronet (8 in 1980) bucking this trend.

Among this year’s declared field, Camerooney (7), Pendragon (7) and The Cayterers (8), do not have age on their side.

Draw
With 35 runners spread across the expanse of Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the totesport.com Cambridgeshire offers a real “cavalry charge” spectacle.

Unlike a lot of courses however, clues as to the draw are often very hard to find at Newmarket.

One trend is that horses with a single-figure draw (who this year are Tameer (1), Northern Fling (2), Nationalism (3), Tartan Gigha (4), Set The Trend (5), Tiger Reigns (6), Dream Lodge (7), Jo’burg (8) and Start Right ((9)) do not fare well with only Risen Moon (drawn 2 in 1990), Rambo’s Hall (drawn 7 in 1992) and Spanish Don (drawn 3 in 2004) winning with a draw number in single figures since 1990.

Stall 17 has been lucky in recent years with Clifton Fox (1996), Pasternak (1997), Chivalry (2003) and Formal Decree (2006) all scoring from this position. This year Viva Vettori starts from stall 17.

Last year’s victor Supaseus was drawn 26 and this stall has been responsible for three winners since 1990, with Beauchamp Pilot (2002) and Cap Juluca (1995) the other two. The John Gosden-trained Taqleed emerges from 26 tomorrow.

Stall 11 suppled the recent winners I Cried For You (2001) and Pipedreamer (2007). Sweet Lightning takes stall 11 this year.

Weight
Horses with weights less than 9st have been dominant since 1945. Only 20 (31%) winners in that time have scored with 9st or more. 12 of this year’s field have 9st and above.

Trainers
The most successful current trainers with a runner in this year’s totesport.com Cambridgeshire are John Gosden, who saddles three strong contenders in ante-post favourite Nationalism, Taqleed and High Twelve, and Sir Mark Prescott, responsible for Speed Dating. Both are seeking their fourth totesport.com Cambridgeshire victory. Gosden has won with Tazeez (2008), Pipedreamer (2007) and Halling (1994), while Sir Mark sent out Chivalry (2003), Paternak (1997) and Quinlan Terry (1988).

Jockeys
Surprisingly, no current jockey has won the totesport.com Cambridgeshire more than once.

UP TO £1.75 MILLION UP FOR GRABS IN TODAY’S S TOTESCOOP6

There could be up to £1.75 million up for grabs in today’s totescoop6 after racegoers and punters have failed to land the win fund for the past few weeks.

The win pool has now reached £468,366, while the bonus fund – which has not been won since May – is creeping closer to the £1-million mark at £861,677.

With up to £500,000 expected to be bet into the pools today, the win fund alone could be close to £700,000.

“The Scoop6 pools are beginning to reach life-changing sums and with up to £1.75 million up for grabs, there should be plenty of interest in what is a cracking weekend of racing,” said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

Today’s bet compromises a double header from Newmarket and Redcar with all six races screened live on Channel 4. The highlight sees a field of 11 face the starter for the Group One Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes where Sahpresa will be looking to win the race for the second successive season for trainer Rod Collet, while the 35-runner totesport.com Cambridgeshire is the final leg at 3.40pm.

NEWMARKET ROWLEY COURSE TO RECEIVE THE ROA GOLD STANDARD AWARD TODAY

The staff of Newmarket Racecourses has been warmly praised after winning a second Gold Standard award by the Racehorse Owners Association.

The town’s July Course has already received the accolade and now the Rowley Mile gets it today.

The award recognises overall excellence in the raceday experience for owners, their horses and stable staff.

The Rowley Mile joins 14 other current holders of the coveted award, each of which is reviewed annually.

ROA Vice President Rachel Hood will present the commemorative plaque to the racecourse executive today, Saturday, October 2, during the climax to the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting featuring the historic totesport.com Cambridgeshire and the Group One Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes.

Newmarket's total prize money for the past 12 months has been almost £10.5 million. The executive and sponsorship contributions for the same period amount to more than 30% of the overall prize money pool. The average prize money per Newmarket fixture for the past 12 months, as listed in the Racing Post's statistical tables, stands at more than £271,000, putting the course third among the Category A courses.

Steven Astaire, ROA Council member and Gold Standard Committee member, commented: “We are very pleased to present the Gold Standard award to Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course. Stephen Wallis and his team have worked closely with us to achieve it, and he has created a little bit of Gold Standard history, having attained the award previously for both Epsom Downs and the July Course at Newmarket.

“The Rowley Mile's Gold Standard is well deserved and is a fitting testament to the high quality raceday experience offered to owners.”

Stephen Wallis, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award, as it is really important to all the staff that the facilities for owners should be amongst the finest in the country.

"This Gold Standard award recognises all of the work undertaken by the team to ensure that we offer first class facilities for owners as well as hostel accommodation, stabling and a racing surface second to none. It is an award for the people who work so hard to deliver a most excellent service to owners.”

Established in 2006, the ROA's Gold Standard Award focuses on improving racecourse facilities for owners, their horses and stable staff. This area, along with prize money, was identified in a 2006 ROA survey as one of the key concerns for ROA members.

DREAM AHEAD FOR DUBAI DEWHURST STAKES ON CHAMPIONS’ DAY?

The Press Association this morning reported that trainer David Simcock will not rush a decision on Dream Ahead's participation in the seven-furlong £300,000 Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Champions’ Day, Saturday, October 16, following his scintillating Shadwell Middle Park Stakes success over six furlongs at the course yesterday.

The Diktat two-year-old secured his third win from as many starts and his second in Group One company with a nine-length demolition of his rivals at Newmarket.

That imperious display sets up the mouthwatering possibility of a clash with Royal Lodge winner Frankel and Godolphin's impressive colt Saamidd on October 16, but Simcock is keen to monitor his star turn's condition over the next fortnight before committing to a run.

“He's absolutely fine this morning and has eaten up well,” said the Newmarket handler.

“He didn't have a hard race but, having said that, it was still soft ground and it will have taken a bit out of him. We were obviously delighted with his performance and it is fantastic for everybody in the yard.

“These horses don’t come along very often and you just feel thrilled and very honoured to train one like him.

“We will see about the Dewhurst. It will be very much a case of seeing how the horse's well-being is and we'll see how we feel. Nothing is set in stone and we won't say we will run and we won't say we won't run. We're in the race and we can leave it as late as we like.

“There are some very, very good seven-furlong two-year-olds around at the moment. You've got Frankel who was exceptional at Ascot, and you've got Saamidd who I think could be anything and looks a cracking horse for Godolphin.

“Then there's Dream Ahead and probably one or two others, including the Shamardal colt in Ireland (Casamento). There are some very good colts around and it all bodes very well for next year.”

Dream Ahead’s jockey William Buick added: “If Frankel and Dream Ahead did clash in the Dewhurst, I would not swop Dream Ahead for anything in the race.

“David (Simcock) is the boss and he knows the horse better than anyone and he will see how Dream Ahead comes out of the Middle Park. The horse could not have won any easier - we will see.

“He is a very chilled out horse and has not been challenged so far - he has been playing around in his races and in Group One company too. He has been taking the mickey out of some of the best two-year-olds around.”

The going for day three of the Cambridgeshire Meeting, totesport.com Cambridgeshire Day, remains:

SOFT

GoingStick readings:

Average - 6.7

Straight Course:
Stands’ Side - 6.6
Centre - 6.6
Far Side - 6.7

Clerk of the Course, Michael Prosser, revealed: “We had eight millimetres of rain yesterday, which had cleared by 8pm. It has been dry since then and the ground remains soft with an average GoingStick reading of 6.7 from the 12-furlong start to the winning line.

“The forecast is for it to be dry with sunny spells, clouding over from about 3pm. Rain is due late afternoon or early evening, so hopefully we should get through racing before further precipitation arrives.”

PUNTERS LOOK TO HIGH DRAW IN totesport.com CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Nationalism (drawn 3) remains a solid 5/1 favourite for this afternoon’s £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire (3.40pm), but early reports from sponsor totesport reveal that punters are keen to invest in high-drawn contenders with a penchant for ease in the ground.

The historic nine-furlong handicap is the first leg of the “Autumn Double”, the second leg being the two and a quarter-mile totesport.com Cesarewitch staged on Champions’ Day, Saturday, 16th October. The Tote has sponsored both contests since 1996.

George Primarolo, totesport’s racecourse representative, reported this morning: “Nationalism remains steady at 5/1 but he is by no means a knock-over and he could drift out a bit before the off. That is down to punters looking to back high-drawn horses that have proven form on soft ground.”

John Gosden trains Nationalism and the Newmarket handler, seeking a fourth win in the race (1994 Halling, 2007 Pipedreamer, 2008 Tazeez), is responsible for two other contenders, one being Taqleed, who is among those proving popular this morning.

Primarolo continued: “Taqleed is particularly popular this morning from his high draw (26) and is now 9/1 from 11/1. Another is Elliptical (20) who was 16/1 but is now a 14/1 shot.

“We have seen each-way money for two horses in particular; Circumvent (35) is drawn highest of all and is 33/1 from 40/1, and Steele Tango (16) is now 20/1 from 25/1.

“Smokey Oakey loves to get his toe in and is drawn 30, so he is another that has attracted support. He was available at 50/1 but has now shortened into 40/1.”

DREAM AHEAD TAKES THE HEADLINES

Dream Ahead’s victory in the Middle Park Stakes took all of the headlines concerning the newspaper reports regarding Friday’s Newmarket racing review.

Alan Lee’s half-page report in The Times (including picture) being the editorially most extensive in the mainstream press. It was run under the banner headline “Dream Ahead proves prophetically named”using quotes from trainer David Simcock and jockey William Buick, who reported that the horse takes “one stride and the others ten.”

The report went onto discuss Hooray’s victory in the Cheveley Park using two paragraphs of quotes from trainer Sir Mark Prescott, before reporting on Havant’s success in the Sakhee Oh So Sharp Stakes. That race report was used to introduce a quote by Sir Michael Stoute regarding Strawberrydaiquiri’s run in Saturday’s Sun Chariot Stakes.

The Independent filed under Chris McGrath a two column-piece as a second lead story on its racing page. Buick was given the first quote followed by Simcock’s quote regarding the horse’s likely paticipation in the Dewhurst. Hooray’s victory was discussed in relation to next year’s 1,000 Guineas, using a Prescott quote for the bulk of the copy.

The Daily Telegraph (Marcus Armitage) used the Dream Ahead story as the main story on its Newmarket card page, alongside a picture of the colt. Again Buick was given quote number one, while Simcock’s quote was used to discuss the colt’s ground preferences. The horse was quoted for the 2,000 Guineas, a paragraph which was used to introduce Hooray’s impact on the Guineas betting. Again Sir Mark Prescott’s quotes formed most of the information regarding Hooray’s performance.

The Daily Express did not review Friday’s racing and carried little editorial copy, but did look ahead to Music Show’s run in Saturday’s Sun Chariot.

Racing Mania’s review came in a story on page 5 under headline “Simcock dreams of Classic glory” - the Dream Ahead story again the lead ahead of a review of Hooray. Quotes from Prescott were used.

The Sun’s Favourite pull-out used the story in a leg on its front page. The story looked ahead to the Guineas and used Buick’s quote declaring that the horse “gives him a feel like no other.”

Starform gave the story (Tony Lewis) headline billing on page 2 and three-quarters of the page, inclusive of the picture. The story looked to the Dewhurst and a meeting with Frankel. Again Prescott quotes formed the bulk of the report regarding Hooray.

The Guardian’s report was pictorially based across the middle of its racing spread. The editorial was light, but included a quote from Simcock.

The Racing Post used a picture of Dream Ahead on page 3 as its main picture (above an unassociated story by James Willoughby) with a link in the caption to a report on page 24.

The report on page 24 was given a full page with a big half-page picture. The Racing Post Ratings gave its view on the Dream Ahead’s performance, while Paul Eacott reported on the remaining races on the card after introducing through Havant.

Hooray’s victory was discussed in a run over in a leg on page 25.

Helped by some gambling winnings, largely gleaned from Altesse Royale's win in the 1971 Oaks, he set up as a trainer from Pegasus House Stables in Newmarket in 1972, having his first winner, Vedvyas, at Doncaster on April 1 of that year. Winning jockey:-Name: Fallon, Kieren Francis Date Of Birth: February 22, 1965 Background: Became apprentice to Kevin Prendergast when 17, riding his first winner the following year. Moved to Britain when still an apprentice in 1988, working for Jimmy Fitzgerald and then Lynda Ramsden in 1993. Signed to ride for Henry Cecil in 1996, and became champion jockey for the first time in 1997 with 202 wins, also winning his first two classics. Joined Sir Michael Stoute in 2000 after acrimonious split with Cecil, but suffered a bad fall at Royal Ascot that nearly ended his career, and ruled him out of the rest of the season. Replaced Jamie Spencer as Ballydoyle stable jockey in 2005, although continued to ride for Stoute when allowed. Charged with race-fixing by City of London Police in 2006, and banned from riding in Britain pending trial. Also failed drugs test in France, resulting in worldwide six month ban in the same year. Returned to action in June 2007, although gave up riding in October 2007 to concentrate impending court case.
