CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING 2010, NEWMARKET
RACENEWS RACECOURSE SERVICE
SHADWELL DAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 1

GROUND SOFT - FORECAST REMAINS UNCHANGED

The going at the end of day two of the three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting remains:

SOFT

The day began with a going description of Good to Soft, but was changed to Soft after the third race.

Michael Prosser, Newmarket’s Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing, commented: “The forecast remains the same, with the rain predicted to stop by around 10.00pm tonight. We should receive around 10 millimetres of rain in total.

“Tomorrow is forecast to be dry.”

KINGDOM OF BAHRAIN SUN CHARIOT STAKES PREVIEW

The Rod Collet-trained Sahpresa sprang a 16/1 surprise last year when ending a 23-year hiatus for French-trained runners in the Group One Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes but she is unlikely to be available at such generous odds when lining up in the mile showpiece again tomorrow.

The five-year-old heads to the Rowley Mile on the back of an easy win in the seven-furlong Group Three Prix Du Pin at Longchamp last month and she will meet a couple of familiar faces tomorrow in Spacious and Strawberrydaiquiri, who were respectively third and fourth 12 months ago.

Although she has yet to win in the top grade, five-year-old Spacious has notched up a first four placing in seven Group Ones - including when runner-up in the 2008 1000 Guineas and fourth in that year’s Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes plus seconds in her last two races to Lillie Langtry in the Matron Stakes at Leopardstown and behind Music Show in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes on the July Course - and she will retire to the Cheveley Park Stud paddocks after tomorrow’s run.

Trainer James Fanshawe, who will also be represented by Alsace Lorraine, told his website: “Spacious has been a massive credit to the yard. She has absolutely no idea how to run a bad race and never knows when she has been beaten. Her performances on the track have reflected the tremendous effort by everyone in the yard to turn around a very difficult season. She will now head to the Sun Chariot at Newmarket, and fingers crossed, maybe we can get her head in front at the very highest level.”

Strawberrydaiquiri won the Group Three Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket in May in the colours of breeder Renata Jacobs but will have her first start for Fawzi Nass tomorrow. The Bahrain-based owner-trainer, who owns Aislabie Stud near Newmarket, bought the Sir Michael Stoute-trained filly privately this week.

Nass trained Lahaleeb when running in Dubai earlier this year and - after one run for trainer Gerard Butler - this filly has now joined Paul D’Arcy for this latest start. The filly was bought for 1 million guineas by jockey John Egan for his client Khalid Rahim after winning last year’s Grade One E P Taylor Stakes in Canada. Egan will be in the saddle tomorrow.

Music Show will bid for a second top-grade success with Richard Hughes on board. She was third in the Matron Stakes last time.

“There's no point in me waffling on about this horse or that horse - Music Show has solid form in the book and looks set to take her chance,” trainer Mick Channon told his website. “Soft ground isn't ideal but as long as conditions aren't desperate we'll just have to get on with the job as they all have to run in it.

"It's a quality Group One and every horse in the field has the credentials to be there but I'd say that our filly would be prominent in the market with good reason. Talk is cheap, but she's done us proud this season and has held her condition and form remarkably well - Hughesie rides so there's no problem on that score and I couldn't be happier.” Channon saddled Majestic Roi to win this contest for Music Show’s owner Jaber Abdullah in 2007.

Trainer Luca Cumani has won the race six times before and is represented by Seta, who has scored three times in a lower grade since disappointing when only 12th in the 1000 Guineas in May.

“Seta has been working very well at home lately, but it is a big jump up in grade for her,” Cumani told www.lucacumani.com. “We have been looking after her all year and it is fair to say some of her form hasn’t really been boosted as we would have liked, but it’s time now to see just how good she is and hopefully she’ll be readier and give a better account of herself than she did when she was when last seen on the Rowley Mile back in the spring.”

It’s 22 years since Henry Cecil won this race with Indian Skimmer and he is represented by Group Three Musidora Stakes heroine Aviate, who finished seventh in the Investec Oaks at Epsom Downs in June when sent off the 7/2 favourite.

With 10 millimetres of rain forecast this afternoon, there could be two appropriately-named winners tomorrow in the Mark Johnston-trained Rainfall and Sent From Heaven, from Barry Hills’ stable.

Rainfall heads to Newmarket six days after an easy Listed success at Ascot, while Sent From Heaven returns to the track where she finished fourth in the 1000 Guineas in May.

The 11-strong field is completed by the David Wachman-trained Hen Night, who will bid to become the third Irish-trained winner in the past decade. Carrying the colours of her breeder, Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown House Stud, the three-year-old Danehill Dancer filly finished fourth in the Grade One Matron Stakes at Leopardstown on her most recent outing, with Spacious and Music Show in second and third.

MAXIMUM FIELD FOR totesport.com CAMBRIDGESHIRE

Tomorrow sees one of the biggest betting heats of the entire season take place on the Rowley Mile, with a maximum field of 35 set to go to post for the £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire (3.40pm) over nine furlongs.

Clear 4/1 favourite with totesport is the John Gosden-trained Nationalism. The lightly-raced three-year-old Pivotal colt, home-bred by George Strawbridge, has won his last two starts, most recently recording a comfortable three-length victory over nine furlongs at Goodwood on September 11. Gosden is of course no stranger to Cambridgeshire success, having sent out three previous winners in Halling (1994), Pipedreamer (2007) and Tazeez (2008). One potential negative concerning Nationalism is the fact that he is drawn in stall three, and only three winners wince 1990 have been drawn below 11.

The totesport.com Cambridgeshire was one of the few races to elude Walter Swinburn during his career as a jockey, but he has a live contender as a trainer this year with Absinthe, owned by his father-in-law Peter Harris and successful in his last two outings over 10 furlongs at Sandown and Windsor. He is one the three 11/1 second favourites along with Start Right, trained by Luca Cumani and a fast-finishing fourth in the Irish Cambridgeshire at the Curragh on August 29 and Taqleed, also with Gosden and a comfortable winner when last seen out in a 10-furlong handicap on the July Course towards the end of August. Taqleed is drawn in stall 26, which has been responsible for three winners since 1990.

In recent years, the luckiest draw is stall 17, which has been responsible for four winners since 1990. The horse to run from that berth this year is Viva Vettori, one the six 66/1 outsiders with totesport. Those looking for a glimmer of hope about the 66/1 chance, who did win a Listed race at Kempton in February and is from the family of the outstanding mare Ouija Board, should look to the fact that he is trained by David Elsworth, who sent out shock 100/1 winner Spanish Don in 2004.

Tartan Gigha only found Supaseus a nose too good when runner-up in 2009, but he has to step up on the form he has shown so far this year, while with rain on the way, horses with winning form on soft or heavy ground include Circumvent, Tiger Reigns, Nationalism, Colepepper, Elliptical, Smokey Oakey, Absinthe, Brunston and Northern Fling.

Latest totesport Odds: Nationalism 4/1, Absinthe 11/1, Start Right 11/1, Taqleed 11/1, Ransom Note 12/1, Emirates Dream 14/1, Pires 14/1, Capponi 16/1, Elliptical 16/1, Credit Swap 20/1, High Twelve 20/1, Proponent 20/1, Set The Trend 20/1, Sweet Lightning 20/1, Steele Tango 25/1, Tiger Reigns 28/1, Circumvent 33/1, Speed Dating 33/1, Taameer 33/1, Breakheart 40/1, Brunston 40/1, Colepeper 40/1, Jo Burg 40/1, Mirrored 40/1, Pendragon 40/1, Sandor 40/1, Tartan Gigha 40/1, Camerooney 50/1, Directorship 50/1, Dream Lodge 66/1, King Olav 66/1, Northern Fling 66/1, Smokey Oakey 66/1, The Cayterers 66/1, Viva Vettori 66/1

totesport.com CAMBRIDGESHIRE - TRENDS

Betting

Market leaders have a relatively poor record in tomorrow’s £160,000 totesport.com Cambridgeshire, with just 10 favourites (15.4%) prevailing in the 65 runnings since Word War II. While on the face of it this may not augur well for the John Gosden-trained Nationalism, who is currently the strong favourite at 4/1 with totesport, it should also be noted that since 1990 seven favourites have won including Blue Monday in 2005 and Pipedreamer, also trained by Gosden, in 2007.

The totesport.com Cambridgeshire is one of the most competitive handicaps of the entire season and has something of a reputation for shock results. The 2008 winner Tazeez was sent off at 25/1, while Spanish Don recorded a famous 100/1 victory in 2004. However, over two thirds of Cambridgeshire winners go off at less than 25/1, with only 20 post-war winners (31%) starting at 25/1 or greater.

Age

Open to three-year-olds and upwards, results since 1945 show that the older generation (four and above) with 38 winners (58%) has the upper hand.

However, winners older than six are certainly a rare occurrence with only Rambo’s Hall (7 in 1992) and Baronet (8 in 1980) bucking this trend.

Among this year’s declared field, Camerooney (7), Pendragon (7) and The Cayterers (8), do not have age on their side.

Draw

With 35 runners spread across the expanse of Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the totesport.com Cambridgeshire offers a real “cavalry charge” spectacle.

Unlike a lot of courses however, clues as to the draw are often very hard to find at Newmarket.

One trend is that horses with a single-figure draw (who this year are Tameer (1), Northern Fling (2), Nationalism (3), Tartan Gigha (4), Set The Trend (5), Tiger Reigns (6), Dream Lodge (7), Jo’burg (8) and Start Right ((9)) do not fare well with only Risen Moon (drawn 2 in 1990), Rambo’s Hall (drawn 7 in 1992) and Spanish Don (drawn 3 in 2004) winning with a draw number in single figures since 1990.

Stall 17 has been lucky in recent years with Clifton Fox (1996), Pasternak (1997), Chivalry (2003) and Formal Decree (2006) all scoring from this position. This year Viva Vettori starts from stall 17.

Last year’s victor Supaseus was drawn 26 and this stall has been responsible for three winners since 1990, with Beauchamp Pilot (2002) and Cap Juluca (1995) the other two. The John Gosden-trained Taqleed emerges from 26 tomorrow.

Stall 11 suppled the recent winners I Cried For You (2001) and Pipedreamer (2007). Sweet Lightning takes stall 11 this year.

Weight

Horses with weights less than 9st have been dominant since 1945. Only 20 (31%) winners in that time have scored with 9st or more. 12 of this year’s field have 9st and above.

Trainers

The most successful current trainers with a runner in this year’s totesport.com Cambridgeshire are John Gosden, who saddles three strong contenders in ante-post favourite Nationalism, Taqleed and High Twelve, and Sir Mark Prescott, responsible for Speed Dating. Both are seeking their fourth totesport.com Cambridgeshire victory. Gosden has won with Tazeez (2008), Pipedreamer (2007) and Halling (1994), while Sir Mark sent out Chivalry (2003), Paternak (1997) and Quinlan Terry (1988).

Jockeys

Surprisingly, no current jockey has won the totesport.com Cambridgeshire more than once.

UP TO £1.75 MILLION UP FOR GRABS IN TOMORROW’S TOTESCOOP6

There could be up to £1.75 million up for grabs in tomorrow’s totescoop6 after racegoers and punters have failed to land the win fund for the past few weeks.

The win pool has now reached £468,366, while the bonus fund – which has not been won since May – is creeping closer to the £1-million mark at £861,677.

With up to £500,000 expected to be bet into the pools this weekend, the win fund alone could be close to £700,000.

“The Scoop6 pools are beginning to reach life-changing sums and with up to £1.75 million up for grabs, there should be plenty of interest in what is a cracking weekend of racing,” said totepool spokesman George Primarolo.

Tomorrow’s bet compromises a double header from Newmarket and Redcar with all six races screened live on Channel 4. The highlight sees a field of 11 face the starter for the Group One Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes where Saphresa will be looking to win the race for the second successive season for trainer Rod Collet, while the 35-runner totesport.com Cambridgeshire is the final leg at 3.40pm.

NEWMARKET ROWLEY MILE TO RECEIVE THE ROA GOLD STANDARD AWARD TOMORROW

The staff of Newmarket Racecourses has been warmly praised after being given a second Gold Standard award by the Racehorse Owners Association.

The town’s July Course has already received the accolade and now the Rowley Mile is to be given it too.

The award recognises overall excellence in the raceday experience for owners, their horses and stable staff.

The Rowley Mile joins 14 other current holders of the coveted award, each of which is reviewed annually.

ROA Vice President Rachel Hood will present the commemorative plaque to the racecourse executive tomorrow, Saturday, October 2, during the climax to the three-day Cambridgeshire meeting featuring the historic totesport.com Cambridgeshire.

Newmarket's total prize money for the past 12 months has been almost £10.5 million. The executive and sponsorship contributions for the same period amount to more than 30% of the overall prize money pool. The average prize money per Newmarket fixture for the past 12 months, as listed in the Racing Post's statistical tables, stands at more than £271,000, putting the course third among the Category A courses.

Steven Astaire, ROA Council member and Gold Standard Committee member, said: “We are very pleased to present the Gold Standard award to Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course. Stephen Wallis and his team have worked closely with us to achieve it, and he has created a little bit of Gold Standard history, having attained the award previously for both Epsom Downs and the July Course at Newmarket.

“The Rowley Mile's Gold Standard is well deserved and is a fitting testament to the high quality raceday experience offered to owners.”

Stephen Wallis, Managing Director of Newmarket Racecourses, said: “We are delighted to receive this prestigious award, as it is really important to all the staff that the facilities for owners should be amongst the finest in the country.

"This Gold Standard award recognises all of the work undertaken by the team to ensure that we offer first class facilities for owners as well as hostel accommodation, stabling and a racing surface second to none. It is an award for the people who work so hard to deliver a most excellent service to owners.”

Established in 2006, the ROA's Gold Standard Award focuses on improving racecourse facilities for owners, their horses and stable staff. This area, along with prize money, was identified in a 2006 ROA survey as one of the key concerns for ROA members.

Race 1 - 1.25pm Sakhee Oh So Sharp Stakes - Winning Quotes

HAVANT RETAINS 100 PER CENT RECORD

Havant retained her 100 per cent record with an authoritative victory in Friday’s opener, the Group Three Sakhee Oh So Sharp Stakes over seven furlongs.

Partnered by Ryan Moore, the Halling filly was well in command from over a furlong from home and powered clear in the final furlong to defeat the 100/30 favourite Look At Me by three and a quarter lengths. The winner was returned at 11/2.

The winner is owned by James and Anita Wigan, who also bred the filly.

James Wigan said: “That was fantastic. She handled the soft ground well and I am very pleased with her.

“She won easily on her debut on the July Course and one hoped that she would improve.

“We bought the mare (Louella) as a foal and she has a yearling by Sirocco who we will be selling this year at Tattersalls.

“She is bred to stay a mile and a half.”

Winning trainer Sir Michael Stoute added: “From the time that she went into strong work, she has done everything well and exhibited ability. She won her maiden on the July course very comfortably and she walked out of the stalls today - she is very relaxed and laid back.

“They didn’t go much of a pace and she was soon up there with them. She was always travelling and looked like winning from a long way out.

“Strawberrydaiquiri (who runs in tomorrow’s Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket) never runs a bad race and she is good shape. We are hopeful but it is a tough contest - a lot of the fillies are at a very similar level. We will see how she comes out of tomorrow before deciding if she runs again - she is in the Lydia Tesio three weeks later.

“We think that Workforce is in good shape and we are looking forward to running him now (in Sunday’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe). We are not certain about the ground but we would like a little forgiveness in the ground for him. We don’t know how soft it is going to be - is it going to be heavy or soft? - soft wouldn’t be a worry but then you are into the unknown.

“It was such a disappointment in the King George and we decided that it was in the punters’ interests that we made a late decision. He has come off a very disappointing race and so Teddy (Grimthorpe, racing manager to Khalid Abdulla) told them at the beginning and we have stuck to it. There we are - he is running and we hope for the best.

“I wouldn’t be confident that he could reproduce his Epsom form but he is in good enough shape to do himself justice.”

Ryan Moore said: “Havant did that well. She travelled good and moved into the race powerfully - when I asked her to quicken, she did it really well. She was just idling and lugging a little bit out in front so I asked for a bit more. She is one to look forward to next year.

“She is by Halling and, while she has always shown a bit of natural speed at home, I think that is more to come next year.

“It’s not nice weather out there, especially for fillies - it’s cold, windy and a bit wet. The ground is nearly soft.”

Paddy Power offer 12/1 for the 1000 Guineas back at Newmarket in early May and 16/1 for the Investec Oaks at Epsom Downs a month later.

FIRST RACE PLACED QUOTES
SAKHEE OH SO SHARP STAKES (GROUP 3)

LOOK AT ME DELIGHTS CONNECTIONS WHEN SECOND

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Look At Me may have been not match for runaway winner Havant in the opening Sakhee Oh So Sharp Stakes but ran a good race to finish three and a quarter lengths behind the winner in second.

“They went a slow enough pace early on but she quickened up and stayed on well. Johnny (Murtagh) was happy with her and it was a good step up from her win at Fairyhouse last time,” said Kevin Buckley, UK representative of Coolmore.

Khawlah took third place in Godolphin’s colours and racing manager Simon Crisford commented: “We were very pleased and she ran a good race. We’ll put her away now and run her over longer distances next year, she wants to step up in trip.”

JOCKEYS REPORT ON THE GOING AFTER THE FIRST

Ryan Moore, rider of the 11/2 winner Havant, said: “Nearly soft.”

Johnny Murtagh, jockey of second Look At Me the beaten 10/3 favourite, described the ground as: “Good to soft.”

Frankie Dettori, partner of third placed Khawlah, said: “It is good to soft at the moment, probably the same as yesterday.”

Steve Drowne, jockey of Ladyanne, said: “Soft.”

Jamie Spencer, rider of Lily Again, said: “It is on the soft side.”

Jack Mitchell, on board Cochabamba, said: “Dead.”

Richard Hughes, partner of Sister Red, said: “Soft.”

Jimmy Fortune, jockey of Strictly Rhythm, said: “It is similar to yesterday but is riding dead.”

William Buick, on board Up In Time, said: “Soft.”

SECOND RACE WINNING QUOTES
NAYEF JOEL STAKES (GROUP 3)

CITYSCAPE SO IMPRESSIVE

Cityscape stormed to a seven-length success in the Group Three Nayef Joel Stakes in the style of a classy performer under Steve Drowne.

Trainer Roger Charlton has always held the Selkirk colt in high regard and said: “Steve said that he didn’t really like the undulations on the track here and we might run him again this year because he’s had a light season and this is his ground.

“There is a nine-furlong race here in two weeks’ time but I’m not sure this course suits. There is one race in France - the Prix Perth (October 31) - and there is possibly a race in Italy for him. We will run again if we can but, if not, then we will wait until next year.

“He is a huge horse - a half-brother to Bated Breath - and he should keep on improving. I will have to look and see if he will run again this season. These Selkirks should get better as they get older and we have had to be patient - he won a novice contest at Salisbury by nine lengths and we have always thought that he was a nice horse.

“He was then placed in the Greenham Stakes, which is not a bad effort for a big horse, and we made an error running him in the 2000 Guineas here last year because he came back a real mess after the race. It was too firm for him that day and he faltered coming down into the dip and looked like he had broken down.

“We had him ready to run in the Spring Cup at Newbury but the ground has been firm all year apart from about three weeks ago when he won at Haydock.

“He was in the Cambridgeshire but we decided to come here instead. I think it’s fair to say he would have won the Cambridgeshire!”

Drowne added: “He’s back now isn’t he? That is kind of what we thought he was as a three-year-old and the governor has had a lot of patience with him that has paid off now.

“He is probably not a horse that wants to be in front too long. He was in front long enough there and I don’t think that he enjoyed the undulations out there - he was just better than them.

“That was a Group Three but it was a hot Group Three. You’ve got to say that he is top-grade now and his rating won’t be far off 117 or 118 now, so he has to take his chance in Group Ones now, doesn’t he?

“He doesn’t need it soft - it got a bit over-soft for him there - but he does need to get his toe in, just to give him a bit of confidence. He got injured on fast ground and he probably just remembers it a little bit.”

Race 2 - 1.55pm Nayef Joel Stakes - Placed Quotes

STEP UP IN TRIP LIKELY FOR PENITENT

Penitent started the 7/2 favourite for the Group Three Nayef Joel Stakes but was unable to cope with the great late surge of Cityscape, eventually finishing second and going down by seven lengths.

Chris Richardson, Managing Director for the owners Cheveley Park Stud, said: “I don’t want to make excuses, but the ground was a bit choppy on top today and he was a bit all at sea. Johnny Murtagh said the horse was just not as comfortable on the ground as he usually is and didn’t feel at home.

“I think what he has shown is that he would benefit from going over further and there is a Group Three race over nine furlongs at the next meeting which could suit him (the Richard Hambro Darley Stakes on Friday, October 15).

“Take nothing away from the winner, that was a very impressive performance.”

Race 3 - 2.30pm Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes - Winning Quotes

HOORAY ALL THE WAY IN ADNAMS CHEVELEY PARK STAKES

Hooray led from start to finish as she powered through the soft ground to claim the Group One Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes for owners Cheveley Park Stud, trainer Sir Mark Prescott and jockey Seb Sanders. Her lead was never seriously threatened and at the finish she had four and a half lengths to spare over Rimth.

The daughter of Pivotal, returned the 7/2 favourite, was winning her first Group One race, having previously triumphed in Pattern company when collecting the Group Two Lowther Stakes at York and the Group Three Sirenia Stakes at Kempton.

Winning trainer Sir Mark Prescott said: “When they are as useful as she is on very fast ground, the unknown factor is when it starts to rain. I was obviously very worried about her with the rain because I thought that, if it stayed firm, she was probably the best filly in the field. Looks like the trainer was wrong again!

“She has kept improving and improving. I think that when we stopped restraining her and let her get on and do what she wanted - that was the making of her.

“Even though she is mine, I thought that she was very impressive. At the top of the hill, you have that lovely thing of looking to see if anything is going well behind you - it’s a rare thing in a Group One. I thought that she was very impressive.

“I wouldn’t think that she would stay a mile. I hope I am wrong again but I wouldn’t think that she would stay that far. She has got bags of speed and she would have a job keeping that up for a mile.

“The owners would probably love to have a go at the 1000 Guineas if she does well through the winter but we have always regarded her as a two-year-old.

“The change in tactics, in allowing her to race from the front, has been everything for this filly. She still works in behind other horses at home, as with front runners I think you have to keep that electric speed for the racecourse.

“It was a brave decision by Mr and Mrs Thompson (owners of Cheveley Park Stakes) to run at York after she disappointed at Newbury. She made a good debut and was then badly drawn in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. From York onwards, everything has come together. She won’t run again this season.”

Seb Sanders added: “Her best performance was on very quick ground and we were a bit disappointed with her at Newbury on softish ground but that was a different kind of soft ground - it was watered ground that had been heavily rained on. She handled the ground today and she is improving all of the time and was very impressive there.

“She was very fractious early doors and we thought holding her up and trying to get her to relax was the thing to do. It probably was the right thing to do at the time because, once you start making the running, there is no return. But she has done nothing but improve since we have started to make the running on her.

“She is very professional in the mornings and it is just when you get her down to the stalls that she gets very edgy and makes life difficult for you. She can do anything she wants as long as she keeps performing like that!”

THIRD RACE PLACED QUOTES
ADNAMS CHEVELEY PARK STAKES (GROUP 1)

PLACED HORSES NO MATCH FOR HOORAY

Trainer Paul Cole was pleased with Rimth’s second place behind runaway winner Hooray in the Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes.

“The winner was very impressive and I think she’s getting better,” said Cole. “But we did what we could and our filly tries her heart out and liked this ground. She’d had a couple of bits of bad luck in her previous two runs and that will be it for this season.

“She’s very speedy and from a fast family so I’m not sure she would be a Guineas filly, she may not get the trip.”

But trainer John Gosden is hoping that third-placed Maqaasid might develop into a Classic contender next season.

“Things went wrong for her when she ran at York and got a bump,” said Gosden. “But I was pleased to see her relax today and she finished well even though she didn’t like this ground. It was a great performance from the winner.

“We had to really r un her here despite the ground and I should think she might reappear in a Guineas trial somewhere next year.”

Godolphin’s Ragsah finished fourth and racing manager Simon Crisford said: “She hasn’t had the rub of the green in her last three starts so she is due a bit of luck. That might be it for her now, we’ll just see if there’s anything else for her. But she’s a very, tough and honest filly.”

GOING SOFT

The official going was changed to SOFT after the third race.

FOURTH RACE WINNING QUOTES
SHADWELL MIDDLE PARK STAKES (GROUP 1)

DREAM AHEAD SIMPLY OUTSTANDING

Dream Ahead justified strong market support to run out a brilliant nine-length winner of the Group One Shadwell Middle Park Stakes over six furlongs and could return to Newmarket in a fortnight’s time.

The David Simcock-trained colt could be on for a mouthwatering clash with Frankel and Saamidd in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes over a furlong further back on the Rowley Mile on October 17.

“He is an exciting horse and this is just very much a relief. Before he won in France, I had my own expectations but today everyone else had expectations as well so I’m relieved it has worked out. We are very, very lucky to have a horse like him,” said Simcock. “I know that I might not get another horse like him for 10 years or maybe not again in my career.

“The only thing - I am being harsh, of course - was when William (Buick) asked him forward about three furlongs out, he just rushed forward. But William has ridden him very confidently and he has had a lot of belief in the horse. He has been a big help with the horse at home and it’s great for an owner like Khalifa (Dasmal) as well. We are very lucky.

“I would like to think that there is more to come and something to look forward to. He won’t run with anything firm in the description this year. In France, it dried out and was good ground - the times will tell you that - and we have always felt that he would be better with cut in the ground. But as long as there is not ‘firm’ in the going description then I’m happy to run him anywhere.

“He has a nice way of going and was just a bit green when he hit the front. He was a bit bolshy to saddle but that’s just him. While he’s very mature physically, he’s still maturing mentally and I there’s no reason why he shouldn’t keep going forward next year.

“There’s a possibility for him here in two weeks and the Dewhurst is something I’ll discuss with his owner and I’ve no doubt about him staying the seven-furlong trip there, I think he probably wants that now. I’m not so sure about a mile next year. He’s by the much the sharpest stallion the mare has been to but she has produced horses who get a mile and a half and a mile by stouter stallions. But his style of running and the way he relaxes in a race gives every indication that he should get a mile.”

William Buick added: “He is an amazing horse. I have been impressed with him ever since I rode him at Nottingham. He hung all the way across the track but that is just him - he is a big baby - but he gives me a feel like no other horse has ever given me. He just swallows them up.

“The Dewhurst Stakes must be an option but bring on next year - he is going to be hard to beat. Even when he hit the front and took nine lengths out of them, he still had his ears pricked. He will be alright when he keeps straight!”

DREAM AHEAD SLASHED FOR 2000 GUINEAS AFTER SHADWELL MIDDLE PARK ROMP

Dream Ahead has been slashed to 4/1 (from 14/1) by totesport for next year’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in early May following his impressive victory in the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon.

David Simcock’s colt produced a breathtaking display, powering up the hill to record a nine-length victory ahead of Strong Suit and Approve. Dream Ahead is now second-favourite behind 2/1 market leader Frankel for the first Classic of next season.

“Both Frankel and Dream Ahead have produced top-class performances in the past week and the sizzling prospect of these two colts clashing in the Guineas will certainly keep punters warm during the cold winter months, “ said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Elsewhere on the card, Hooray recorded a pillar-to-post victory in the Adnams Cheveley Park Stakes and has been given a quote of 16/1 for next year’s 1000 Guineas despite her trainer’s reservations that she may not stay a mile.

Dream Ahead
The sixth foal of 1997 Group Two Flying Childers Stakes winner Land Of Dreams and a half-brother to three winners, Dream Ahead - who was bred by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley operation - has twice passed through the sales ring. As a yearling, he realised only $11,000 when sold to agent Federico Barberini at Keeneland in September, 2009, before being offered at the DBS Breeze-Up Sale in April this year, when he was knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock for £36,000. Racing in the colours of Khalifa Dasmal, owner of the 1996 Derby winner Shaamit, the son of Diktat made his debut at Nottingham on July 16, when despite showing inexperience by hanging badly in the final furlong, he sauntered to a nine-length victory under William Buick. Following that impressive debut, he took a substantial step up in class to contest the Group One Darley Prix Morny at Deauville on August 22, when he was up against several previous winners, including the dual Group Two scorer Libranno. Again partnered by William Buick, Dream Ahead was delivered to challenge entering the final furlong and showed an impressive turn of foot to win by a length and a half from Tin Horse. But he put in an even more striking effort to land the Group One Shadwell Middle Park Stakes today by nine lengths.

David Simcock
Born on February 23, 1972, David Simcock had spells with Ian Balding, Dick Hern and Luca Cumani, where he was involved with such star performers as Falbrav and Gossamer. He took out his own licence in 2004, training from the historic Trillium Place Stables in Newmarket. Starting out with just 10 horses, he has rapidly established himself as one of the brightest training talents to have emerged in recent years. Simcock's first runner was also his initial winner when Cut And Dried landed an all-weather maiden at Lingfiled Park on February 14, 2004. Among the best horses trained by Simcock are Bushman, a five-time winner including at Group Three level, the consistent performer Metropolitan Man and Darley Sun, who captured the 2009 totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket. This season he enjoyed his first Group One victory with Dream Ahead in the Darley Prix Morny at Deauville and with 42 winners so far (after Dream Ahead's win today) is on course to record his best-ever seasonal total.

William Buick
The 22-year-old William Buick is probably the brightest young talent in British racing at present. He was announced as the new stable jockey to powerful Newmarket handler John Gosden in January and cemented that partnership with a success aboard Lady Lloyd-Webber's Dar Re Mi in the Group One Dubai Sheema Classic in March. Born on July 22, 1988, in Norway, where his father Walter (an eight-time champion in Scandinavia) was a jockey at the time, he had his first ride in August, 2006, and his first success the following month (September 27) when scoring on Bank On Benny at Salisbury. He was apprenticed to trainer Andrew Balding and shared the 2008 apprentices' championship with David Probert, who was attached to the same stable. His first big win came in the 2007 Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot on Dark Missile and he landed both the 2008 St Simon Stakes and 2009 Ormonde Stakes on Buccellati. His first top-level success came when winning the Grade One E P Taylor Stakes at Woodbine in Canada in October last year on the Mick Channon-trained Lahaleeb. He enjoyed further top-flight success across the Atlantic in August when partnering Debussy to victory in the Grade One Arlington Million in Chicago for Gosden. The following day, Buick landed in France and rode the David Simcock-trained Dream Ahead to victory in the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville. Buick won the Apprentice Jockey of the Year award at the Lesters in 2007 and 2008, making him the only rider to receive the accolade twice. He won his first Classic, and indeed initial British Group One, on Arctic Cosmos in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on September 11. His second domestic Group One has followed quickly on in today's Shadwell Middle Park Stakes.

Race 4 - Shadwell Middle Park Stakes - Placed Quotes

HANNON AND HERBERT SATISFIED

Dream Away may have run away with the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes by nine lengths, but connections of the second and third, Strong Suit and Approve, were still more than satisfied.

Richard Hannon, trainer of Strong Suit, commented: “He has run well on ground that didn’t suit him. The winner likes this ground, as he won on it before in France.

“That will be it for the season now for our horse and we will bring him back for the big ones next year.”

A further short-head back in third was Approve, who came with a strong run from the off the pace. Trained by William Haggas, the colt is owned by the Bahram Syndicate of Highlere Thoroughbred Racing.

Highclere’s Managing Director Harry Herbert commented: “He has run a blinder once again and we are thrilled to bits. It was a fantastic run.

“He had to grind his way into the race today, and has only just failed to catch the second, who is a Coventry Stakes winner.

“He went on the ground and has shown he can handle any ground. He has been such a star for us this season and has never been out of the first four with two Group Two wins.

“He could run again this season. We will have a good look at the programme book.”

Race 5 - Haafhd EBF Maiden Stakes - Winning & Placed Quotes

WINNING DEBUT FOR LOVING SPIRIT

Loving Spirit made a very encouraging start to his career when the comfortable five-length winner of the seven-furlong Haafhd EBF Maiden Stakes. The winner was returned at 10/1.

Partnered by Robert Havlin, the Azamour colt came with a great run inside the final furlong and went clear for a five-length victory.

Winning trainer James Toller said: “He was going well at home and we thought he was a nice horse.

“I am very pleased with the way he has won today, although you never know what you have beaten in these races. Hopefully, he will be something to go to war with next season. Today was very encouraging.

“We will sit down and have a think about where we go next. He could run again this season if we can find something suitable. The Horris Hill at Newbury could perhaps be an option.

“He ought to stay a mile and a half next year. His dam is a half-sister to Housemaster, who finished fourth in the Derby.”

Charlie Hills, assistant trainer to his father Barry, said of the runner-up White Frost: “He travelled well, showed good speed and then maybe just got caught out by the ground at the end. You never quite know what has beaten you in these races but this is going to be a very nice horse next year.”

BARGAIN MYPLACELATER SHINES

Myplacelater looked better than ever as she stormed to a six-length victory in the Listed Aqlaam Godolphin Stakes to the delight of trainer David Elsworth, who half owns the filly with Tony Thompson.

“It’s a fairytale job really because she only cost £600. Although this is her fifth win, it’s her first bit of black type even though she had a rating of 110. I guess it’s been bad placing by the trainer!”, said Elsworth.

“The Pride Stakes back here in a fortnight is a possibility for her. Her form is very solid apart from a couple of blips when I shouldn’t have run her.

“It’s the first time she has experienced this ground but seemed to like it and at one stage it looked like she was going to be sold to go to California but was spun by the vets, which surprised me as she’s a very sound filly.

“I would have sold, because I need the money, but it’s probably a bit of a blessing that she did get spun now. She’ll stay in training next year.”

The win completed an 8/1double for jockey William Buick.

Andrew Balding, trainer of the runner-up Dreamspeed, said: “I was very pleased with the way he ran as he was coming back after a lay-off. Hopefully, he should improve for that outing and we can find another race for him.”

Race 7 - Standing For Success Handicap (Silver Cambridgeshire)

FRANKIE TAKES THE SILVER

The inaugural running of the Standing For Success Handicap, the Silver Cambridgeshire, fell to 7/2 favourite Sarrsar, who came with a great late run under Frankie Dettori to land the spoils by a short-head from Lost In The Moment and Sand Skier, who dead-heated for second. The nine-furlong handicap is for horses who were declared to run, but eliminated at the final declaration stage for tomorrow’s totesport.com Cambridgeshire.

Gay Jarvis, wife and assistant to winning trainer Michael Jarvis, said: “That was a good run. I am very happy.

“The horse’s performance was particularly pleasing because we didn’t think he would like this ground.

“I don’t know where he will go next.”

Jeremy Noseda, trainer of Lost In The Moment, who dead-heated for second with Sand Skier, said: “I have no complaints and he ran very well. He’s in the Horses In Training Sale at the end of this month and we’ll have a stab at trying to win something before that.”

SCOTTISH BOOGIE STORMS HOME

On a day dominated by long winning distances, Scottish Boogie took the concluding Newmarket Challenge Whip by no less than 19 lengths under Richard Hughes in the colours of Jeff Smith.

“I hope the handicapper doesn’t take that too seriously because he didn’t have much more than a blow out there,” said Fanny Kirk, whose husband Sylvester trains the colt.

“He loves soft ground so this was ideal today. Sylvester has always loved this horse and I’m sure he’ll run again this year if Jeff’s happy.”

The success was a 154th of the season for Hughes, who is now eight wins behind his title rival Paul Hanagan.
