INSPECTION AT SEDGEFIELD TOMORROW
Tomorrow's meeting at Sedgefield is subject to a precautionary inspection at 7.00am with torrential rain the problem.
Alan Brown, the Clerk of the Course stated: "We've had torrential rain since 1.15pm.
"It has been very, very heavy, it is still raining and we've called an inspection for 7am.
"The weather centre say it is going to rain through the night which would make things impossible if it carries on at the same rate.
"The problem is that it has come far too late to drain away."
CATTERICK DOUBTS
The meeting at Catterick on Thursday is also under threat with racecourse officials planning an inspection at 7.30am on Thursday.
Currently, the course is unraceable due to waterlogging.
Spokesman John Gundill commented: "It's rained since 11am today, quite heavily at times, and water is stood all over the surface and in the footholes from racing last Saturday," said course spokesman John Gundill.
"The forecast for tomorrow is for more heavy prolonged showers and Thursday isn't so bad.
"But in light of that forecast and the fact that we're unracaeble at the moment we had to line up an inspection."
FANTASTIC ENTRIES RECEIVED FOR PILLAR PROPERTY CHASE FIXTURE
A superb day's racing is guaranteed at Cheltenham this Saturday, January 27, 2001, thanks to the magnificent 164 entries received from trainers and owners at the five-day stage, compared with 103 last year.
The final race on the terrific card is the £20,000 Wragge & Co Finesse Four Years Old Hurdle (4.35pm) which is a trial for the Elite Racing Club Triumph Hurdle at the National Hunt Festival in March.
Increasing French interest in Cheltenham's prizes is illustrated by Jair Du Cochet, trained by Guillame Macaire at Les Mathes, near Royan in France, who is set to line up at Prestbury Park.
Macaire said: "I am aiming him at the Elite Racing Club Triumph Hurdle and want to give him experience of the course."
The Rahotep four-year-old reversed previous placings with Bilboa when beating his fellow French-trained rival into second place in the Grade One Welsh Finale Junior Hurdle at Chepstow on December 27.
Janus Du Cochet, another four-year-old by Rahotep who used to be in the same ownership as Jair Du Cochet, as well as being trained by Macaire, is now owned by Terry Neill and trained by Martin Pipe, having been purchased after winning two French hurdle events at Auteuil.
Another highly-regarded entry for the Wragge & Co Finesse Four Years Old Hurdle is Rostropovich, who was formerly trained by Aidan O'Brien on the Flat, but now resides with fellow Irish handler Mouse Morris. The son of Sadler's Wells made a winning hurdling debut at Naas early in January to beat Kadoun by half a length. He is being targeted at the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle at the Festival and also has an entry in the Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle on Saturday.
The current ante-post second favourite for the Triumph Hurdle, Pedro Pete, is another entered in what looks like a cracking race. Trained by Nicky Henderson at Lambourn, Pedro Pete won very smoothly on his hurdling debut in a novices' event at Kempton on January 10.
The feature race, the £75,000 Pillar Property Chase (2.50pm), speaks for itself. The top-quality event has 12 entries as against eight last year, including See More Business and Go Ballistic, the first and second respectively in the 1999 Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup, while the highly-regarded Cyfor Malta makes his long-awaited comeback after winning this race in 1999. Beau, Lord Noelie and Marlborough are three other Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders in the Pillar Property Chase.
The big hurdle event, the £50,000 Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle (3.30pm), has attracted an excellent 19 entries (12 last year) and these include Princeful and Anzum, the winners of the 1998 and 1999 renewals of the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle at the Festival. The Venetia Williams-trained Lady Rebecca, who has won the last two runnings of this prestigious contest, goes for a hat-trick while Smurfit Champion Hurdle contender Barton puts his credentials on the line
Saturday's seven-race card, which starts at 1.10pm, has new record prize money for the day, £215,000. Also featuring on the splendid card is the £30,000-added Ladbroke Trophy Handicap Chase (4.05pm), over two miles and five furlongs. Among the entries for this valuable prize is Samakaan, also trained by Venetia Williams, who won the 2000 Grand Annual Chase at the National Hunt Festival
Last season's champion trainer Martin Pipe has three entries, including the 1998 Elite Racing Club Triumph Hurdle winner Upgrade, Majadou, who was successful in the Mildmay of Flete at the Festival the following year, and Northern Starlight, who has two Cheltenham career victories to his name including the 1998 Tripleprint Gold Cup.
The other races on Saturday's excellent card include the £15,000-added Letheby & Christopher Handicap Hurdle (1.45pm), over two miles one furlong, which has attracted 34 entries, the £15,000-added Timeform Novices' Handicap Chase (2.20pm), over two miles and five furlongs, which has received 30 entries and the £10,000-added Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Novices' Handicap Hurdle (1.10pm), over two miles and one furlong, which has drawn 29 entries.
DALIAPOUR TO RUN OVER FIVE FURLONGS
Daliapour, runner up in the 1999 Vodafone Derby when trained by Sir Michael Stoute, is set to run over five furlongs on his first run for Hong Kong-based trainer Ivan Allan.
The Sadler's Wells horse is set to take his chance over five furlongs at Sha Tin in the Bauhina Sprint Trophy on Friday.
Explaining the decision Allen stated: "I have been pleased with Daliapour since he came out of quarantine, but I wanted to find a race for him.
"I know he has never run over such a short trip, but there wasn't another race for him."
Daliapour's stablemate Fairy King Prawn, the leading Hong Kong miler, is also a possible for Friday's contest.
