CATTERICK REMAINS ONLY AFTERNOON FIXTURE AFTER LINGFIELD ALL-WEATHER AND STRATFORD CALLED OFF THIS MORNING - WOLVERHAMPTON DUE TO RACE THIS EVENING
The big freeze has hit today's racing with the fixtures at Stratford and Lingfield being abandoned after inspections.
Haydock and Kempton were called off yesterday and only Catterick this afternoon and Wolverhampton tonight survive the cold snap today.
Stratford became the 68th National Hunt fixture to be lost this winter when a 7.30am inspection found the course to be frozen in places.
Clerk of the course Stephen Lambert said: "It was very close to call, too close for comfort, but it was too risky. About 90 per cent of the course is raceable, but that means that 10 per cent isn't."
The temperature dipped to minus two and a half C centigrade overnight.
It was even colder at Lingfield, minus six and a half C, which saw the abandonment of the all-weather Flat meeting on the Equitrack.
Clerk of the course Chris Stickels said: "We've got large frozen lumps. We don't feel that even with a temperature rise that they are going to come out because they are of a larger size than normal."
Catterick goes ahead following an inspection. Course spokesman John Gundill said: "Racing will take place. What has saved us is that rain has taken the crustiness out of the ground."
The going at the North Yorkshire track is good to soft and the first race is scheduled for 12.55pm.
No problems are reported at Wolverhampton's Flat fixture on Fibresand tonight. The going is slow

GLOBEFORM'S 2000 CLASSIFICATIONS ANALYSIS
- DAYLAMI BETTER THAN MILLENNIUM?
- SINNDAR A CLEAR NO. 1 THREE-YEAR-OLD?
- EGYPTBAND IN TIZNOW'S LEAGUE?
- KING'S BEST NO BETTER THAN HOLDING COURT?
- NAMID AS GOOD AS B CUP WINNER KONA GOLD?
Would Daylami really have beaten Dubai Millennium? Is Egyptband nearly as good as Tiznow, Giant's Causeway and Fusaichi Pegasus? Was Sinndar's win in the Arc two to three lengths better than Tiznow's rock solid run in the Breeders Cup Classic? Is the French juvenile Okawango better than Nayef, the big 2000 Guineas favourite in England? Was Holding Court as good as the 2000 Guineas hero King's Best? Was Namid as good a sprinter as Kona Gold?
The questions are many, unusually many, as we take a look at the International Classifications of 2000, released at a press conference in London on Wednesday.
Godolphin's DUBAI MILLENNIUM has been given the rating 134 and is the top rated horse in the Classifications. The handicappers seem to be a bit set in their ways. They always rate prestige races such as the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (G1) highly, but are not accepting outstanding performances in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (G1).
Dubai Millennium pulverised the opposition in these two races, both over a mile and a quarter but otherwise very different tasks. He beat BEHRENS, who was in top form at the time, out of sight at Nad Al Sheba in March and he tore a classy field apart at Royal Ascot in June. Dubai Millennium ran to Globeform 138 in Dubai and to GF 139 at Royal Ascot.
That is the highest rating since the Globeform ratings began nine years ago. Higher than Cigar. Higher than Holy Bull, and higher than Daylami.
Two races seem overrated by the official handicappers, the "King George" and the "Arc". Montjeu won the King George with ridiculous ease and many observers felt that he could have won by six or seven lengths. I can't say that I agree. The beauty of the race, for him, was that he never had to let himself down thus the theory that he could have won by a street is on
shaky ground. His win at Ascot led many to believe that he had become as effective on good to firm as he was on soft and heavy. He was not. Montjeu was brilliant in the 1999 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, in a strongly run mile and a half on very heavy ground. That was his cup of tea. As we saw in the 1999 Japan Cup, the 2000 Arc and the 2000 Breeders' Cup Turf, he was never as good on firm ground. To assume that he had more than five lengths in hand at Ascot is a very dangerous route to take.
The official handicappers never believed in Dubai Millennium. As a three-year-old he produced a sensational run winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) at Ascot, but he was still rated below Sendawar by the handicappers.
While Dubai Millennium is officially rated only four pounds better than Montjeu in the International Classifications, I have him 12 pounds in front and I am also convinced that he would have outclassed the best three-year-olds.
SINNDAR gets the official rating 132, making him nearly the same horse as Dubai Millennium. The Arc runner-up EGYPTBAND is thus rated 126. Can it really be, that Egyptband is no more than half a length inferior to TIZNOW, GIANT'S CAUSEWAY and FUSAICHI PEGASUS?
Egyptband ran a big race in the Arc but I do not believe that she could get to the quarters of Tiznow and Giant's Causeway. Like Tiznow, she remains in training and it will be very interesting to see if she can live up to her official mark.
KING'S BEST, probably the best miler we saw last year but sadly retired after being injured in the Irish Derby, was rated 124 by the handicappers. They have him on the same mark as HOLDING COURT, who was a clear cut winner of the Prix du Jockey-Club (G1) at Chantilly but disappointed badly afterwards.
In my opinion King's Best was a far better horse than Holding Court, who beat a Group Two field on bottomless ground at Chantilly. The proven mudlark Lord Flasheart finished second, Circus Dance was third, Kutub fourth and Broche fifth. How can beating this bunch equal what King's Best did to Giant's Causeway in the 2000 Guineas (G1)?
The son of Kingmambo was about four lengths behind Giant's Causeway approaching the final furlong at Newmarket, and he blew by him to win the classic by 3 ½ lengths going away.
It is not possible to rate King's Best above Giant's Causeway, who improved throughout the season, but Sir Michael Stoute's trainee was brilliant.
New Zealand trained SUNLINE is included in the International Classifications, on 120, alongside horse like DALIAPOUR, FRUITS OF LOVE, TOUT CHARMANT and MUTAMAM. This is clearly not her best form but rather the rating she ran to when beating FAIRY KING PRAWN in the Hong Kong Mile (G1). Any horse included in the Classifications should be rated on its best
performance. If the handicappers feel that they cannot assess one impressive run, the horse should not be included. Sunline is far better than 120, she would have a horse like Mutamam for breakfast! She did not produce her best at Sha Tin, where I have her on 121, compared to 127 in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley. Sunline put up an incredible performance in the Cox Plate,
running away from Diatribe, Referral and Oliver Twist to win by seven lengths. It is unlikely that Diatribe, Referral and Oliver Twist all ran the best part of a stone below their best in the Cox Plate. Diatribe ran to 104. I had him on 110 when he won the Caulfield Cup from Kaapstad Way, and on 102 when he was 11th in the Melbourne Cup, where Kaapstad Way finished fourth
(ran to 106).
Interestingly, DIATRIBE is also included in the International Classifications, on 114 he is assessed only six pounds below Sunline. Not many "down under" would agree with that verdict. Sunline's run in the Cox Plate may be hard to believe in our part of the world but she beat a host of Group 1 winners by seven lengths or more and is clearly a special horse. She was also a Group 1 winner over six furlongs.
FIVE STAR DAY, who came close to beating the track record when he beat Istintaj by 4 lengths in a Grade 3 at Keeneland, is rated only 118, while he achieved 123 on our ratings. The US miler YANKEE VICTOR also looks hard done by on 118. That mark seems low, for a horse that trounced HONEST LADY, SIR BEAR and BIG JAG in the Metropolitan Mile (G1) at Belmont. These three are all Grade 1 winners. Sir Bear won the Met Mile in 1999. The French miler SENDAWAR is another unkindly positioned on 118. He did not have as good a season as one could have hoped for but he beat INDIAN DANEHILL with ease in the Prix d'Ispahan (G1) at Longchamp. That run must have been better than 118, or was Sendawar really no better than Running Stag, Enzeli and Sumitas last year? We had him on GF 121+ in the Ispahan.
KONA GOLD and NAMID are joint top rated sprinters in the Classifications. Kona Gold, who has steadily developed into a top class sprinter in the US, is a clear number one on Globeform ratings. He was actually a bit below his best in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1), where I tired close home and was nearly caught by Honest Lady, who possesses more stamina than him. Kona Gold ran his best race in the Ancient Title Handicap (G2) at Santa Anita, where he was allowed to sprint properly in the stretch and performed to GF 127.
Namid was impressive in the Prix de l'Abbaye (G1) at Longchamp but the five furlong dash was rather an unsatisfactory affair, with more than half the field running down right badly and the juvenile filly SUPERSTAR LEO filling second. She is rated very highly by the handicappers.
The juvenile ratings still lack one important element, US based horses. Globeform's joint top rated are MACHO and POINT GIVEN, virtually inseparable in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Churchill Downs. They ran to GF 123+ and the Juvenile-Kentucky Derby jinx could finally be broken this year.
Point Given went on to win the Hollywood Futurity (G1) from the very promising MILLENNIUM WIND, who performed to GF 114+ in only his second lifetime start. Not many horses perform to that level of form second time out and Millennium Wind must have a good chance of beating TURNBERRY ISLE in the Santa Catalina Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita on Sunday. Turnberry Isle ran to GF 116 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) but he does not look a likely improver.
The best juvenile colts of 2000 seemed to be in America but trends in Europe make it increasingly difficult to assess youngsters. English trainers cannot be relied upon to run their best juveniles in Group Ones, possibly because they are anxious to hide their classic hopes from the Godolphin scouts.
Aidan O'Brien's attacking policy seems to make other leading handlers in Ireland quite happy pass on many a domestic juvenile Group race. The situation is no better in France, where Okawango and AMONITA were the only juveniles to excite last year. Andre Fabre, in particular, has a handful of lightly raced juveniles in his care and new names will hit the headlines of Paris-Turf this summer. OKAWANGO has been given a most generous rating. 121 makes him a better horse than Nayef! He won the Grand Criterium (G1) well enough but I was more impressed by Amonita's win in the Prix Marcel Boussac (G1), where she showed a real turn of foot and ran to GF 114+. She is unlikely to travel to England for a clash with Crystal Music & co. in the 1000 Guineas but English racegoers should still keep her in their notebooks.
UNBRIDLED ELAINE looked the best prospect among the fillies in the US. She was most impressive in the Pocahontas Stakes at Churchill Downs and has a lot more scope than the Breeders' Cup winner CARESSING and the non-staying RAGING FEVER, NOTABLE CAREER and JETIN EXCESS. The latter was beaten by I BELIEVE IN YOU in the Hollywood Starlet (G1) and that winner is also one to keep on the right side in 2001.
GLOBEFORM'S FINAL RATINGS 2000,
DUBAI MILLENNIUM WAY AHEAD
DUBAI MILLENNIUM was Globeform's clear top rated champion of 2000. The son of Seeking the Gold ran to GF 138 when winning the Dubai World Cup (G1) on dirt at Nad Al Sheba in March, and stepped up to GF 139 when winning the Prince Of Wales Stakes (G1) on turf at Royal Ascot. The Godolphin runner was truly a special horse.
SUNLINE's seven-length win in the Cox Plate (G1) made her the champion older filly or mare, while TIZNOW's brave win in the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) put him one pound in front of runner-up GIANT'S CAUSEWAY and Prix de l'Arc winner SINNDAR. EGYPTBAND ran to GF 123 behind Sinndar in the Arc. Thus she "won" the title champion 3yo filly in a race where she was beaten. The division was not particularly strong.
THE JUVENILE division, in the US in particular, was a strong one last year. MACHO UNO beat POINT GIVEN by a whisker in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and they both performed to GF 123+. That is the highest rating given in the Juvenile since Favorite Trick (GF 125) in 1997. He was a typical early two-year-old and a non-stayer who failed to train on. Macho Uno and Point
Given are on the same mark as Timber Country achieved in 1994 B C Juvenile. Timber Country was classic type. He was beaten in the Kentucky Derby (G1) but came good in the Preakness Stakes (G1). Many a name will be added to the Kentucky Derby list in weeks to come but the newcomers will have to be pretty good to live with Macho Uno and Point Given.
AMONITA is one of four juvenile fillies in GF 114. She was very impressive in the Prix Marcel Boussac (G1) at Longchamp and looks a future star for France. She is likely to be aimed at the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1).
The 1000 Guineas in England is wide open according to the bookmakers, but of the top rated fillies CRYSTAL MUSIC appeals the most. She is a horse with plenty of scope and the right profile for a winner of the "1000", having run to GF 114+ when landing the Fillies' Mile (G1) at Ascot.
CARESSING won a sub standard Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) but still seems on course for an Eclipse Award. She ran to only GF 112 however and is not our top rated in the division. RAGING FEVER and the ill fated DANCINGINMYDREAMS put up better performances in the Matron Stakes (G1) over a mile at Belmont, when they pulled nearly ten lengths away from the useful Ilusoria.
The impressive winner of the Pocahontas Stakes, UNBRIDLED ELAINE, may prove to be the best of them all at three. She impressed at Churchill Downs, where she ran to GF 113+ and is most likely to train on into a top class three-year-old.
