INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATIONS - 2000
The twenty fourth Classifications Conference was held in Hanover and hosted by Direkorium. Twelve countries were represented, two - Australia and South Africa - as Observers, and representatives of the Asian Racing Conferences Classifications Committee. This Committee, which currently represents Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa, produced its first draft Classification in 1999 and works closely with the International Classifications Committee.
As of this year, and to more positively represent the continuing internationalisation of horse racing, the Classifications will be published in the International Cataloguing Standards Committee's Blue Book and also on the Internet. An extract from the Classifications, containing European trained horses, will appear in the European Pattern Book.
In the year 2000 there were 685 horses classified as compared to 817 in the 1999, the generational breakdown being as follows:
2-y.o 58 (134)
3-y.o 243 (282)
4-y.o+ 386 (401)
The decrease in the number of two-year-olds is due to the inclusion of only those horses rated at 110 or over whereas in 1999 the table included those at 105 and over. These horses are now published as a supplement and considered as domestic, but where they have run outside their own country the rating is agreed mutually.
The representation by country is little changed with North America extending their dominance of the three and four-year-old divisions and Great Britain and Ireland dominating the two-year-old division.
The relevant statistics as related to quality continue to reflect a reassuring stability from year to year, with the year 2000 showing a satisfactory increase in the number of two-year-old fillies being rated and an overall increase in the number of quality horses (115+).
The number of ‘open' races run in Japan was increased to 12 (9) including the newly introduced Japan Cup Dirt. T M Opera O (JPN) 122 won eight Group races in Japan this year including the Japan Cup and in doing so became the world's leading winner of prize money, breaking the record of Cigar (USA) and Special Week (JPN). In winning the July Cup - Newmarket - Agnes World became the first Japanese trained winner of a British Group 1 race.
Within Europe Giant's Causeway (USA) 127 quite deservedly won the admiration of all with his relentless consistency, courage and durability. Ironically, perhaps his finest performance was when unfortunately beaten in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Such qualities cannot be measured by a rating alone. Dubai Millennium (GB) 134 was immensely impressive in winning the Dubai World Cup and the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Ascot. Tragically an accident prematurely ended his racing career and we will never know how good he might have been. Much the same might be said of King's Best (USA) 124, the impressive winner of the 2000 Guineas - Newmarket. Sinndar (IRE) 132 in winning the Epsom and Irish Derbies and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe showed himself to be a middle distance thoroughbred of immense class and, though understandable, it is sad he could not be given the opportunity to reach his full maturity. He along with Minardi (USA) 123, the aforementioned Giant's Causeway (USA) 127 and Namid (GB) 127 made it an outstanding year for Irish-trained horses which won sixteen overseas Group races.
In North America few of the potentially top class three-year-olds saw it through to the end of the season. Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) 127, impressive in winning the Kentucky Derby, disappointed in the Breeders' Cup Classic where Tiznow (USA) 127 showed himself to be a horse of the future. Among the older horses Kona Gold (USA) 127 demonstrated himself to be an above average sprinter. With the exception of Dubai Millennium (GB) 134, Highweight Intermediate Dirt, North American horses topped the remaining 14 Divisions. On turf of the 21 Divisional Highweights nine were trained in Great Britain, five in Ireland, four in France and three in the USA.
2-y.o's
Minardi (USA) 123 did all that was asked of him to become the Highweight Two-Year-Old over the very promising Okawango (USA) 121. Superstar Leo (IRE) 120 is Highweight Filly having attained her rating in finishing second in the l'Abbaye - a race from which in 1978 Cigy (FR) 126 gained the highest ever rating for a filly. Superstar Leo (GB) is the highest rated filly since Lyric Fantasy in 1992. Overall the generation was well up to standard with considerable strength in depth.
3-y.o's
Sinndar (IRE) 132 was clear Highweight followed by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA) 127 and Tiznow (USA) 127 who both attained their ratings from Intermediate distance races on dirt. The indomitable Giant's Causeway (USA) 127, who five Group 1 races from 8-10f, was Highweight Turf Intermediate horses having attained his rating when beating Kalanisi (IRE) 126 in the Eclipse. The latter went on to win the Breeders' Cup Turf. Egyptband (USA) 125, as a result of her second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, was Highweight Turf Filly and Jostle (USA) 122 the Highweight Dirt Filly. The Highweight Sprinter (Dirt) was Caller One (USA) 122. Top of a moderate division in Europe were Auenklang (GER) 117 and Lincoln Dancer (IRE) 117. Millenary (GB) 116 was the leading Stayer.
Overall the generation was well up to standard with again strength in depth.
4-y.o's
Dubai Millennium (GB) 134, in his brief season, dominated on both Dirt and Turf and improved seven pounds from 1999. Montjeu (IRE) 130 who failed to match his 1999 performances was the Highweight Long Distance Colt and Riboletta (BRZ) 125 Highweight Mare at a Mile on Dirt. Kona Gold (USA) 127 Dirt and Namid (GB) 127 Turf were joint Highweight Sprinters. Kayf Tara (GB) 122 again demonstrated his class in becoming Highweight Stayer for the third successive year. Lemon Drop Kid (USA) 125 was Highweight Dirt Miler, that position being shared with Riboletta (BRZ) 125.
This continues to be an immensely strong division which once again is dominated by horses from the USA.
TARRY FLYNN HEADS LINCOLN WEIGHTS
Irish raider Tarry Flynn heads the weights on 9st 10lb for the ú50,000-added Lincoln Handicap run at Doncaster on Saturday, March 24. Dermot Weld's charge was beaten by half a length in a Group 3 event at the Curragh in September.
His stablemate Creux Noir, who finished runner-up in a handicap hurdle at Fairyhouse on New Year's Day, has 8st 8lb. Weld was responsible for the last Irish-trained Lincoln winner, Saving Mercy in 1984.
After Tarry Flynn at the top of the handicap, both with 9st 8lb, are the Jeremy Noseda-trained Man O'Mystery, who finished fourth in the Tote Cambridgeshire last September and runner-up in a Newmarket Listed race the following month, and Pulau Tioman, who also finished second in Listed company last season - in his case at Ascot in July - and carries the same colours as the 1997 winner Kuala Lipis.
Last year's winner John Ferneley, who is now with Lynda Ramsden after changing hands for 100,000gns, has been allotted 9st 4lb - 8lb more than he carried last year. Mastermind, another new recruit to the Ramsden stable, also has 9st 4lb.
King Priam has 8st 8lb, compared to 8st 6lb when runner-up 12 months ago, while the 2000 fourth Pantar, who is also entered again, has been allotted 9st 1lb - 1lb more than he carried last year.
Trainer David Nicholls, who has a great record in major handicaps although has yet to win the Lincoln, has eight entries of which Peartree House - winner of a valuable mile handicap at York last August - is the highest rated on 8st 12lb.
The 2001 Lincoln promises to be an ultra-competitive renewal with no less than 68 of the 108 entries in the proper handicap. A year ago only 55 horses had the minimum weight of 7st 10lb or more. The Spring Mile, a consolation race for those who do not make the big race line-up, takes place on Friday, March 23
Tim Betteridge, General Manager at Doncaster Racecourse, said: "The 2001 renewal of the Lincoln is set to be both a high-quality and ultra-competitive race with so many horses in the handicap."
