COLD SNAP PUTS RACING IN DOUBT ONCE AGAIN
Racing is once again bracing itself for another round of abandonments.
Tomorrow's meeting at Huntingdon is subject to an inspection at 7.30am.
Racecourse manager Jim Allen commented earlier today: "Frost is the threat. We had -4C last night - it is quite firm out there now - and it is forecast to be -4C again tonight.
"But they do get it wrong occasionally."
The future of Newcastle's meeting tomorrow was determined by an inspection at 1.00pm today - which found the track to be frozen.
Kelso are "pretty pessimistic" about their chances on Friday but Uttoxeter are hopeful that their meeting on the same day will go ahead, with no frost in the ground at present.
Meanwhile at Haydock the ground is currently frozen although racecourse officials are "cautiously optimistic" that conditions will improve before Saturday's valuable Bet Direct Peter Marsh Chase meeting. Saturday's fixture at Catterick is in doubt due to parts of the course being frozen at present.
FIRST TIM FORSTER CUP TO BE RUN AT WINCANTON
The inaugural running of the Tim Forster Cup is set to take place at Wincanton on Thursday, January 25, 2001 and Henry Daly, who was assistant to Forster for eight years and then took over as trainer at Downton Hall Stables, Shropshire, hopes to run High In The Clouds.
Daly said: "I plan to have a runner and it will probably be High In The Clouds but he must have goodish ground. It would be very exciting to win the Tim Forster Cup."
This new race had been due to be run for the first time last year but, unfortunately, frost meant the fixture had to be abandoned.
The £12,000-added TIM FORSTER CUP (3.10pm), a handicap chase over three miles, one and a half furlongs, is the richest race of the day and commemorates the late Captain Tim Forster, trainer of three Grand National winners (Well To Do 1972, Ben Nevis 1980 and Last Suspect 1985), who died in April,1999.
Wincanton was Forster's favourite track and he stated in his will that, if a memorial race were to be held for him, it should be at Wincanton and for no longer than five years.
Forster enjoyed considerable success at Wincanton during his 36 years as a trainer and his connections with the Somerset track were strong. He said in 1991: "For years I used to be leading trainer or thereabouts at Wincanton. Now since they drained the course, I can't win a race there! It used to resemble a ploughed field - not a blade of grass. So it suited my horses!"
More recently, Dublin Flyer, typical of the courageous chasers Forster so often produced, won the 1996 John Bull Chase at Wincanton, after getting rid of his rider at the last in the same race the previous year. Dublin Flyer also won a 1994 amateur riders' handicap chase at Wincanton.
Another of his top-class chasers, Martha's Son, won twice at Wincanton, a 1992 handicap hurdle and then a chase in 1994 at the course's most popular fixture on Boxing Day.
A challenge trophy, as well as a trophy to keep, will be presented by friends of the late trainer to the winning connections. When the equivalent event was last held in 1999, it fell to the Paul Nicholls-trained Double Thriller who went on to land Wincanton's Jim Ford Challenge Cup before finishing fourth to his stable companion See More Business in that year's Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup.
As well as having been Forster's favourite course, Wincanton is also held in high regard by racegoers and was voted the best small racecourse in the South-West of Britain for 2000 by the Racegoers Club for the 11th year in succession.
Some riding stars of the future could be on show in the £6,000-added PAT RUTHVEN AND GUY NIXON MEMORIAL VASE (3.40pm), a handicap chase for amateur riders over three miles, one and a half furlongs. When this contest last took place in 1999, it was won by the Paul Nicholls-trained Dancetillyoudrop, ridden by Sam Stronge who is now a successful conditional jockey with the same trainer. Second in 1999 was Rocky Park, ridden by Paul Flynn who went on to become champion amateur last season and is currently second behind Noel Fehily in this season's conditional jockeys' championship.
Over timber, the best race on the card is the £7,500-added two-mile TOTE BOOKMAKERS HANDICAP HURDLE (2.40pm). Wincanton specialist Kino's Cross, trained by Jim Wilson was successful in the last renewal of this contest. Racing gets underway at 1.40pm when the JUVENILE NOVICES' CLAIMING HURDLE over two miles is run.
Ian Renton, Clerk of the Course at Wincanton said: "The Tim Forster Cup commemorates one of National Hunt racing's greatest supporters and we are greatly looking forward to its first running."
Admission prices are Club £15 (Juniors aged 17-22 with ID £7.50), Tattersalls £10 (Students with ID half-price) and Course £5. There is FREE admission for accompanied children aged 16 and under and parking is FREE except inside the Course Enclosure where there is a charge of £5.
