CARLISLE OFF TOMORROW - CHEPSTOW AND NEWCASTLE TO INSPECT
Tomorrow's meeting at Carlise has already been abandoned after an inspection at luchtime found the track to be frozen. With freezing temperatures forecast overnight, the racecourse took the decision to abandon today. It is the 60th meeting to be lost to the weather so far this National Hunt season.
Meanwhile, an early inspection is planned for tomorrow's meeting at Chepstow, where freezing temperatures are forecast tonight.
Newcastle's meeting on Wednesday is subject to an inspection at 1.00pm tomorrow.
ENTRIES HIGH FOR HURDLING SHOWPIECES
The Smurfit Champion Hurdle, in which the great Istabraq will bid for a record fourth victory on Tuesday, March 13, has attracted a total of 47 entries, 14 more than 12 months ago, while the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle, run two days later, has four previous winners among the 56 entered -the highest entry for ten years.
Istabraq, winner of the Smurfit Champion Hurdle for the past three years, is one of only five horses to boast a trio of successes in hurdling's Blue Riband but as was proved at Leopardstown on December 29, it would only take one slip for him to lose the crown and the opposition are queuing up to benefit from that possible eventuality.
His possible rivals in the Smurfit Champion Hurdle, which boasts record prize money of º260,000, include the outstanding Geos, winner of the Bonusprint Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham on December 9 and the Pertemps Christmas Hurdle at Kempton 18 days later, the 1999 Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle winner Barton plus some interesting overseas challengers.
There are 11 entries in all from Ireland -including Moscow Flyer and Stage Affair, who finished first and second in the December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown on December 29. Three entries come from France -Francois Doumen's pair Ben Ewar and Double Bounce plus Gun'n Roses, trained by Francois Rohaut -and one from Germany, San Suru.
Bacchanal, Anzum, Princeful and Dorans Pride -respectively winners of the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle in 2000,1999, 1998 and 1995 -are all engaged in this year's renewal but face no shortage of opposition in attempting to regain the crown. Among them are the French-trained pair Baracouda, facile winner of the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot before Christmas, and the Jehan Bertran de Balanda-trained Le Sauvignon, who beat that rival in a Grade 1 race at Auteuil in November. Three are three other French entries and one from Germany, Vishnu.
There is also a powerful 12-strong Irish presence in this contest including Bannow Boy, who won the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown on December 31 by four lengths, and Youlneverwalkalone, part of J P McManus's formidable Cheltenham team this year and winner of the Grade 1 Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse on December 3.
The home defence includes last year's favourite Lady Rebecca, who bids for a third successive win in the Grade 1 Byrne Bros Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham on January 27, and Teaatral, who blotted an otherwise exemplary copybook when pulled up in the Long Distance Hurdle at Ascot on December 19.
Edward Gillespie, Cheltenham's Managing Director, said: "All eyes will be on Istabraq as he bids for a remarkable fourth victory in the 75th renewal of the great Smurfit Champion Hurdle and we are delighted to see such a quality and fascinating entry for both that race and the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle."

THE 2001 SMURFIT CHAMPION HURDLE
Analysis
When the Aidan O'Brien-trained Istabraq won last year's Smurfit Champion Hurdle, he became only the fifth horse to be successful in three consecutive renewals of hurdling's Blue Riband and only the third horse ever to win at four National Hunt Festivals in a row along with Arkle and Golden Miller.
Istabraq is currently odds-on to add another Smurfit Champion Hurdle to his record but the Sadler's Wells gelding did suffer a disappointment on his seasonal debut when falling for the first time ever in the Grade 2 December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown on New Year's Eve.
Geos, who is trained by Nicky Henderson in Lambourn, won last season's Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury by 10 lengths and since then the six-year-old has emerged as a leading candidate for the two-mile hurdle crown. After beating Barton by six lengths in the Grade 2 Bonusprint Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham in December, he followed up at Kempton in the Grade 1 Christmas Hurdle with Seebald, Mister Morose, and Bring Sweets all behind him.
Although Barton found Geos too good in the Bula, this was only the eight-year-old's second run in the last 20 months. In 1998/1999 he was unbeaten in seven outings, including the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle at the National Hunt Festival and the Martell Mersey Novices' Hurdle at Aintree the following month.
Mark Pitman was out of luck when last year's Smurfit Champion Hurdle fourth Ashley Park was found to be lame after finishing second to Geos in the Christmas Hurdle. His hopes now fall on Hitman, who has only raced over hurdles twice and is still a novice. Last season he was pulled up on his only outing at Kempton, but he shaped with a great deal of promise when finishing fourth to Geos in the Bula Hurdle.
This year's Smurfit Champion Hurdle has 11 Irish-trained entries and Istabraq is by no means the only one of them with high-class form.
Stage Affair, trained by Dermot Weld, won his first four outings over timber in 1999 before later in the season finishing fifth in last season's Smurfit Champion Hurdle. He was then placed third in the Grade 1 Shell Champion Hurdle at Punchestown, beaten five lengths by Grimes, and on his latest start finished an encouraging second to Moscow Flyer in the December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown after seven months off the track. Moscow Flyer certainly deserves to take his place at Cheltenham having only ever been beaten once in seven two-mile hurdle outings.
Youlneverwalkalone is one of the two horses to have beaten Moscow Flyer on that sole defeat. Trained by Christy Roche, Youlneverwalkalone was highly impressive when stepped up to two-and-a-half miles to win the Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse in December. After that victory he travelled to Cheltenham with a mighty reputation for the Bula Hurdle six days later, but the contest could have come a little bit too quickly after the Fairyhouse outing and the Montelimar gelding was pulled up.
There are three French-trained entries. The Francois Doumen-trained Ben Ewar was placed in the Group 2 Grand Prix De Chantilly last June on the Flat and he certainly looked to possess plenty of speed when making a successful jumping debut at Ascot in December in a novices' hurdle.
His stablemate Bounce Back has won two of his eight hurdling starts, including a Grade 3 event at Auteuil last May. The five-year-old was in front when falling two out in a Grade 2 novices' hurdle at Aintree last April. Gun'n Roses, trained by Francois Rohaut, beat Bounce Back by two lengths when receiving 3lb in the Grade 3 Prix de Maisons-Laffitte at Auteuil on September 29.
San Suru is trained in Germany by Christian Von Der Recke. The seven-year-old has won five of his nine starts over hurdles but was comprehensively beaten in the 1999 renewal of the Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle by Hors La Loi III.
Hors La Loi III now resides with Newmarket-based trainer James Fanshawe, who won the 1992 Smurfit Champion Hurdle with Royal Gait. Last year, when with Francois Doumen, Hors La Loi III finished second to Istabraq in the race. A month later he disappointed when odds-on favourite in the Grade 1 Martell Aintree Hurdle, finishing fourth to Mister Morose. On his only outing this term Hors La Loi III was pulled up in the Grade 2 Bonusprint Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Martin Pipe is the last British-based trainer to have been successful in the Smurfit Champion Hurdle, scoring with Make A Stand in 1997. The now 10-year-old features among eight entries for the champion trainer but has only raced twice since that famous victory, finishing third in the Grade 1 Martell Aintree Hurdle a month later, and then last in the 2000 Smurfit Champion Hurdle.
Pipe has also entered Mr Cool, who has only been beaten twice in 11 National Hunt outings, Auetaler, Hit And Run, Rodock, Seebald, The French Furze and Wahiba Sands, who made his chasing debut in last year's Irish Independent Arkle Chase at the National Hunt Festival, finishing sixth behind Tiutchev. This season Wahiba Sands has appeared over both hurdles and fences, most recently when second to last year's Bonusprint Stayers Hurdle winner Bacchanal in a chase at Newbury in November.
Trainer Jim Old won the Smurfit Champion Hurdle in 1996 with Collier Bay and the Wiltshire-based handler will be hoping for a repeat of that performance from Sir Talbot. The seven-year-old has already won at the National Hunt Festival, scoring in the 1999 Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle, but has not appeared on a racecourse since finishing second to Blue Royal at Ascot in December, 1999.
IRISH-TRAINED ENTRIES IN THE 2001 SMURFIT CHAMPION HURDLE
4532-11 GRIMES 8 b g Reprimand-Diva Madonna (Chief Singer)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Christy Roche IRE
Usually held up but took off in front in the Grade 1 Shell Champion Hurdle at Punchestown in May and defeated a high-class field. Nine days later the same tactics worked again in the Grade 3 Murphys Irish Stout Handicap Hurdle at Killarney, his last outing. Boasts three previous hurdling successes including the 1996 Grade 2 Denny Hurdle and the 1997 Murphys Irish Stout Champion Hurdle at Punchestown. He was well beaten by Istabraq in the 1998 Smurfit Champion Hurdle and, in April, 1999, was tried over fences and put in a great first effort to finish second to Flagship Uberalles in the Sandeman Maghull Novices' Chase at Aintree, but did not progress over the bigger obstacles after that on three subsequent outings.
/32341P0-6 HIS SONG (IRE) 8 ch g Accordion-Pampered Finch VII (My Dad George)
Owner: David Lloyd Trainer: Mouse Morris IRE
Reverted back to hurdles for the first time in nearly two years in the Grade 1 Martell Aintree Hurdle last April but finished last of ten. Although a five-time winner over fences, including in the Denny Gold Medal Novices' Chase at Leopardstown, His Song has disappointed on occasions. As a hurdler he won his first three starts, before finding just Istabraq too good in the 1998 AIG Europe Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown in 1998. Two months later he finished second again, this time to French Ballerina in the Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the National Hunt Festival. The following month he managed to reverse placings with this rival in the Country Pride Champion Novices' Hurdle at Punchestown. His last race was in October on the Flat when finishing third to Knife Edge over one mile six furlongs.
/12111-F ISTABRAQ (IRE) 9 b g Sadler's Wells-Betty's Secret (Secretariat)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE
Istabraq has proved himself to be one of the greatest hurdlers ever, winning the Smurfit Champion Hurdle for the last three years running and this year bids to become the first horse ever to take this prestigious contest four times. The Sadler's Wells gelding has won at the National Hunt Festival for the last four years, in 1997 being successful in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle. On his most recent reappearance in the Grade 2 A.I.B. Agri-Business December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown, Istabraq fell for the first time in his life and suffered only his fourth defeat ever over hurdles. Whether tiredness or the heavy state of the ground accounted for the nine-year-old's fall, Istabraq is set to make a further appearance in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 21 before Cheltenham.
1325-543 MANTLES PRINCE 7 ch g Emarati-Miami Mouse (Miami Springs)
Owner: Sunrise Syndicate Trainer: Pat Hughes IRE
Broke his maiden over hurdles at Limerick in May, 1998 and enjoyed his greatest hour in the 14th Ladbroke Handicap Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 8, 2000. After one other handicap outing he was stepped up in class, finishing second to Mister Morose in the Grade 1 Martell Aintree Hurdle in April. He then finished fifth to Grimes in the Grade 1 Shell Champion Hurdle at Punchestown the following month. This season Mantles Prince struggled on his first two outings to recover the form of the previous campaign, but his third behind Moscow Flyer last time in the Grade 2 A.I.B. Agri-Business December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown on New Year's Eve was a more encouraging effort.
181-3121 MOSCOW FLYER (IRE) 7 b g Moscow Society-Meelick Lady (Duky)
Owner: Brian Kearney Trainer: Jessica Harrington IRE
Although Moscow Flyer has had a couple of flirtations with two-and-a-half miles -including when getting within 3.5 lengths of Youlneverwalkalone in the Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse in December -he does seem more of a two miler. A return to the minimum trip last time saw him take the honours in the Grade 2 A.I.B. Agri-Business December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown on New Year's Eve, and he will return to the Dublin track later this month for the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle. This latest success was his third win in 2000 and his sixth victory over hurdles.
132020 PENNY RICH (IRE) 7 br g Little Bighorn-Musical Puss (Orchestra)
Owner: Cormac McGuinness Trainer: Tom Hogan IRE
Penny Rich's official mark was 115 when he made no impression behind Ned Kelly in a novices' hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas and considering that Istabraq is rated 176, Penny Rich is a winner of two handicap hurdles last year.
6P/-5033 RICARDO 7 b g Sanglamore-Nurica (Nureyev)
Owner: Pat Whelan Trainer: Brian Nolan IRE
Ricardo, like Penny Rich, is rated some way off the best with his recent Leopardstown handicap hurdle third coming off a mark of 109. Finished sixth in the 1999 Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the National Hunt Festival when trained by Jenny Pitman and his last victory came in a handicap hurdle at Newbury in March, 1999.
112253-2 STAGE AFFAIR (USA) 7 bb g Theatrical-Wooing (Stagedoor Johnny)
Owner: Dr Michael Smurfit Trainer: Dermot Weld
Without a run since May, Stage Affair finished second to Moscow Flyer in the Grade 2 A.I.B. Agri-Business December Festival Hurdle at Leopardstown on his most recent outing. A switch to chasing had been considered, but he now looks likely to renew rivalries with the winner and Istabraq in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown on January 21. Last season finished a creditable fifth to Istabraq in the Smurfit Champion Hurdle, before coming third to Grimes in the Grade 1 Shell Champion Hurdle at Punchestown in May. A winner of his first four starts over timber in 1999, Stage Affair was previously a high-class Flat horse winning two Listed races earlier in his career.
2/0629-70 THEATREWORLD (IRE) 9 b g Sadler's Wells-Chamonis (Affirmed)
Owner: Sue Magnier Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE
Theatreworld has been overshadowed by the fantastic achievements of stablemate Istabraq, but any horse who can finish second in three consecutive Smurfit Champion Hurdles is a very good hurdler indeed. The first of these performances came in the 1997 renewal when second to Make A Stand and in 1998 and the following year he was again runner-up to stablemate Istabraq. He managed only ninth on last season's Smurfit Champion Hurdle but a month earlier put in a good performance in the Grade Three Red Mills Trial Hurdle at Gowran Park when beaten 2 lengths into second place by Balla Sola. He was last seen in the Guinness Galway Handicap Hurdle on August 3 when well down the field behind Perugino Diamond.
0521- THE GLOW-WORM (IRE) 6 b g Doyoun-Shakanda (Shernazar)
Owner: Rita Shah Trainer: Patrick O'Brady IRE
Formerly trained by Barry Hills on the Flat, The Glow-Worm finished sixth behind High-Rise in the 1998 Derby. On his third run over hurdles the Doyoun gelding shaped with promise finishing second to Lawz in a maiden hurdle at Fairyhouse in January 2000. Just under two weeks later at the same track The Glow-Worm had his last racecourse outing losing his maiden status over hurdles in a novices' hurdle.
1113-21P YOULNEVERWALKALONE (IRE) 7 b g Montelimar-In My Time (Levmoss)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Christy Roche IRE
After winning a bumper when odds-on at Leopardstown in December 1998, Youlneverwalkalone won three novice hurdles in quick succession early last season. On the back of this he was regarded by many to be a banker in last year's Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle, but the ground was possibly a little too fast for him and he lost his unbeaten record finishing third to Sausalito Bay. He was second to Knife Edge over the minimum trip on his seasonal debut at Cork in October and, as trainer Christy Roche suggested, he was even sharper over half a mile further next time when beating Moscow Flyer by 3 lengths in the Hatton's Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse in December 3. Six days later he travelled to Cheltenham for the Grade 2 Bonusprint Bula Hurdle but despite starting 13/8 favourite he was never travelling and had to be pulled up before the last in a race won by Geos. Also entered in Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle.
FRENCH-TRAINED ENTRIES FOR THE 2001 SMURFIT CHAMPION HURDLE
-1 BEN EWAR 6 b h Old Vic-Sunset Reef (Mill Reef)
Owner: Tony Richards Trainer: Francois Doumen
Trained in France by Francois Doumen for veteran Berkshire-based owner Tony Richards, Ben Ewar made an impressive jumping debut at Ascot on December 16 winning the Capel Cure Sharp Novices' Hurdle by 1.5 lengths from Jaseur. He was a few lengths behind at the last hurdle, but showed an impressive turn of foot to mow down the leaders on the run in. This acceleration was not a surprise, having been placed at Group 2 level on the Flat.
21F-13322 BOUNCE BACK (USA) 5 ch g Trempolino-Lattaquie (Fast Topaze)
Owner: Wendy Sainer Trainer: Francois Doumen
The Francois Doumen-trained Bounce Back has made one previous appearance in England, competing in the Glenlivet Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices' Hurdle at Aintree in April, 2000, when falling at the second last while still in the lead. Since that mishap Bounce Back has won once, taking the Grade 3 Prix Sageris-Prix de Longchamp at Auteuil last May. He has also been placed in a couple of Grade 1 events at the same track, most recently when second to Caballo Raptor in the Prix Renaud du Vivier in November. Also entered in Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle.
311-013 GUN'N ROSES (FR) 5 b g Great Palm-Scandaleuse (Groom Dancer)
Owner: J Gispert Trainer: Francois Rohaut FR
Not to be confused with the two-year older Martin Pipe-trained horse of the same name, the French-based Gun'n Roses has been a good flagbearer for trainer Francois Rohaut with three successes in 2000 at the country's top jumping track, Auteuil. Receiving 3lb, he defeated Bounce Back by three lengths in the Grade 3 Prix de Maisons-Laffitte on September 29 and on his previous start, exactly five months earlier, he beat L'Avocat by a length and a half in the Grade 2 Prix Amadou with the Elite Racing Club Triumph Hurdle winner Snow Drop in fourth. Most recently he contested the Grade 1 Prix Renaud de Vivier over 2m 4 f, again at Auteuil, but this time could manage only third to Caballo Raptor, one place behind Bounce Back.
GERMAN-TRAINED ENTRY FOR THE 2001 SMURFIT CHAMPION HURDLE
110-111 SAN SURU (GER) 7 b h Surumu-Sweet Virtue (Halo)
Owner: Stall Jenny Trainer: Christian Von Der Recke GER
San Suru has won all of his three hurdle starts this season -two victories coming at Mannheim and the other at Hamburg. The seven-year-old has a good career hurdling record winning five of nine starts, although on his previous visit to the National Hunt Festival in 1999, he was beaten by 91 lengths by Hors La Loi III in the Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle.
THE BONUSPRINT STAYERS' HURDLE (CLASS A)
Grade 1, 2.35pm,Thursday, March 15, 2001, three miles and about half a furlong for four-year-olds and upwards, º120,000 total prize fund. Weights: 4yo: 11st; 5yo and up: 11st 10lb; fillies and mares allowed 5lb. Entries closed January 10 (56 entries), entries released January 15, forfeit stage February 20, five-day confirmation stage March 10, final declaration stage 10.15am, March 14. BONUSPRINT STAYERS' HURDLE ANALYSIS
The 2001 Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle has attracted a bumper entry of 56 -20 up on last year - and the joint-highest since 1990. In addition, there is a strong overseas presence with 12 Irish-trained entries (eight more than last year), five French-trained and one German-trained entry.
Four previous victors in the contest could line up again this year -Dorans Pride (1995), Princeful (1998), Anzum (1999) and Bacchanal (2000).
Dorans Pride, now a 12-year-old, is more likely to contest the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup while Bacchanal will probably tackle the Royal and SunAlliance Chase after two successes over fences this season. Anzum has been sidelined through injury although trainer Richard Phillips hopes to bring him back to action at Haydock on January 20. The ten-year-old Princeful has leg problems and running plans are therefore up in the air.
One of the most popular horses in training, Limestone Lad, heads the 12 Irish-trained entries. Second to Bacchanal last year, on ground that was faster than ideal, James Bowe's charge initially began this season in novice chases. After winning four such contests he was defeated at Fairyhouse last month. Connections have since stated that Limestone Lad will revert to hurdles with the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle as his target once again.
Other prominent entries from the Emerald Isle include Youlneverwalkalone (who also holds an entry for the Smurfit Champion Hurdle), an impressive winner of the Hatton's Grade Hurdle over 2m 4f at Fairyhouse in December, although he was a disappointment behind Geos in the Bonusprint Bula Hurdle at Cheltenham's Tripleprint Meeting a week later. Trainer Christy Roche has also entered Bannow Bay, a five-time winner this season, most recently on December 31 when he defeated Slaney Native over three miles at Leopardstown.
Willie Mullins' Be My Royal, who is owned by Florida Pearl's owner Violet O'Leary, is unbeaten in three novice contests, each over three miles, so far this season. He was third behind stablemate Joe Cullen in last season's Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.
Istabraq's handler Aidan O'Brien has entered the Sue Magnier-owned Kilcash Castle. Although he has only landed a bumper and a maiden hurdle, this well-bred gelding looks to be a scopey individual who could develop into a high-class performer.
Baracouda forms part of a strong French-trained entry. Recently sold to J P McManus, Baracouda could not have been more impressive in his only visit to Britain when he ran out a most decisive winner of the Cantor Index Long Walk Hurdle over 3m 1f at Ascot last month (where he had Deano's Beano, Celtic Native, Count Campioni, Audacter and Teaatral all trailing behind him). Although still a novice, Baracouda is likely to contest this race instead of the Royal & SunAlliance Hurdle.
Another interesting French contender could be Le Sauvignon. Unbeaten on his last four appearances, all at Auteuil, Jehan Bertran de Balanda's charge defeated Baracouda by half-a-length last time out in November in the Grade 1 Grand Prix D'Automne over three miles.
Mister Banjo was sold to John Hales for a record 240,000gns in May and he was successful in the Concord Brights Filing Products Relkeel Hurdle over 2m 5.5f at Cheltenham's Tripleprint Meeting last month.
IRISH-TRAINED ENTRIES IN THE 2001 BONUSPRINT STAYERS' HURDLE
111121 BANNOW BAY (IRE) 6 b g Good Thyne-Derry Girl (Rarity)
Owner: Mrs Paul Shanahan Trainer: Christy Roche IRE
Bannow Bay has been admirably consistent since making his hurdling bow on December 27, 1999. The six-year-old has won six of his 11 starts and been placed on two occasions. He would have arguably won his last six starts if jockey Paul Moloney had not given him an ‘injudicious' ride at Navan in November for which the pilot received a one-day ban. Successful on his latest start at Leopardstown on New Year's Eve in the Grade 2 Christmas Hurdle.
1/3-111 BE MY ROYAL (IRE) 7 b g Be My Native-Royal Rehearsal (Pamroy)
Owner: Violet O'Leary Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
Willie Mullins' seven-year-old Be My Royal has only ever sustained one defeat under National Hunt rules, which came in last year's Weatherbys Champion Bumper, finishing third behind stablemate Joe Cullen. This season Be My Royal's record is three from three with his most recent success coming in the Grade 3 Stayers Novices' Hurdle at Thurles in mid-December. He looks more likely to run in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle to take advantage of his novice status.
15-P153 BOSS DOYLE (IRE) 9 b g Lapierre-Prolific Scot (Miami Springs)
Owner: Anne Daly Trainer: Mouse Morris IRE
Last season Boss Doyle reverted to hurdling having tried his hand at the bigger obstacles. His first victory over timber came in 1997 and later that season he competed in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle where he was well beaten by Istabraq. He then won six of his first seven outings over fences including the Mumm Mildmay Novices Chase at Aintree. Since returning to hurdles Boss Doyle has won three events with his most recent success coming at Wetherby in October. Last time out he was third behind Bannow Bay in the Grade 2 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown on New Year's Eve.
6-B2132 DORANS PRIDE (IRE) 12 ch g Orchestra-Marians Pride (Pry)
Owner: Tom Doran Trainer: Michael Hourigan
Now entering the veteran stage, Dorans Pride can still compete with credit at the very top level. He has appeared at five Cheltenham Festivals, beginning in 1995 when he was victorious in the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle. For the last four years he has run in the Tote Cheltenham Gold, finishing third as a novice back in 1997, third again in 1998 (finished strongly after making a bad mistake), a rather distant eighth in 1998 and was never in contention when last of the six finishers in 2000. He won the Leopardstown November Handicap on the Flat in November, finished runner-up to Look Like Trouble in the James Nicholson Wine Merchant Chase at Down Royal the same month and landed the Grade Two Morris Oil Chase at Clonmel in November. In between the latter two races, he reverted to hurdles, finishing runner-up to Youlneverwalkalone in the Hattons Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse. His most recent appearance was on December 31, when he chased Rince Ri home in the Grade Two Ericsson Chase at Leopardstown.
4/2P35-P FLAGSHIP THERESE (IRE) 7 br m Accordion-Maryland Flagship (Ardross)
Owner: Austin Brady Trainer: Philip Rothwell
Trained by Philip Rothwell, who at just 22 is rapidly making a name for himself as a trainer in his native Ireland. Was previously in Britain with Paul Nicholls and David Cosgrove. Best form was in the 1998/99 season (for Paul Nicholls) when he landed a 2m 5f mares' handicap hurdle at Cheltenham and also recorded wins at Taunton, Newbury and Uttoxeter. Form appeared to tail off a bit last season and has not been seen out since pulling up at Uttoxeter in May.
105-1 KILCASH CASTLE (IRE) 7 b g Strong Gale-Cooleogan (Proverb)
Owner: Sue Magnier Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Began his career in July 1999 with a bumper win at Galway over two miles. Made his debut over timber in April last year at Clonmel, finishing a staying-on third over the minimum trip. Ran on December 31 at Leopardstown and was a convincing maiden hurdle winner again over two miles. The Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle is a more-likely Festival target.
12120-0 OA BALDIXE (FR) 7 gr g Linamix-Bal D'Oa (Noir Et Or)
Owner: The High Street Racing Syndicate Trainer: Mouse Morris
Began his career in the French Provinces before being transferred to Ireland, initially with Noel Meade, for whom he won three races at Fairyhouse, Navan and Leopardstown. Rounded off last season in the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle but was only 11th behind Monsignor. Made his first appearance for Mouse Morris on December 31 at Leopardstown in the Grade Two Woodies DIY Christmas Hurdle over 2m 5f, where he finished a well-beaten eighth behind Bannow Bay.
1 ROSTROPOVICH (IRE) 4 gr h Sadler's Wells-Infamy (Shirley Heights)
Owner: Tony Kilduff Trainer: Mouse Morris IRE
Last season's Irish St Leger fourth Rostropovich, cost 180,000gns at Tattersalls in October, and made a winning hurdling debut in a maiden at Naas on January 7 where he beat Kadoun by a half length. He reportedly heads for a race at Fairyhouse next time and his likely target at the National Hunt Festival is the Royal & SunAlliance Novices' Hurdle.
2-63415 SALLIE'S GIRL (IRE) 8 b m Un Desperado-Katerina (Goldhill)
Owner: John Joe Shaughnessy Trainer: Noel Meade IRE
Noel Meade's charge finished fourth behind Anzum in the 1999 Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle. The next season the mare went chasing, winning on her first attempt at Fairyhouse but did not follow up on that success and reverted to hurdles in February last year. A winner at Navan in December, Sallie's Girl finished fifth in a Grade 2 event behind Bannow Bay last time at Leopardstown over the New Year.
61532/-0 WITHER OR WHICH (IRE) 10 b g Welsh Term-Black-Crash (Crash Course)
Owner: Robert Sinclair Trainer: Willie Mullins IRE
Wither Or Which is a lightly-raced 10-year-old, who won the 1996 Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the National Hunt Festival on his debut under Rules. He did not appear again until January, 1999, when making his hurdling bow and broke his duck over timber next time in a maiden at Punchestown. Following that victory Wither Or Which ran in the 1999 Gerrard Supreme Novices' Hurdle, finishing fifth behind Hors La Loi III. After 20 months off the track he then recently re-appeared in the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown over the New Year finishing ninth to Bannow Boy.
1113-21P YOULNEVERWALKALONE (IRE) 7 b g Montelimar-In My Time (Levmoss)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Christy Roche IRE
After winning a bumper when odds-on at Leopardstown in December, 1998, Youlneverwalkalone won three novice hurdles in quick succession early last season. Also entered in Smurfit Champion Hurdle.
FRENCH-TRAINED ENTRIES FOR THE 2001 BONUSPRINT STAYERS' HURDLE
2-112211 BARACOUDA (FR) 6 b g Alesso-Peche Aubar (Zino)
Owner: J P McManus Trainer: Francois Doumen
Baracouda swept to favouritism in the Bonusprint Stayers' Hurdle after a remarkable performance for a novice when easily winning the Grade 1 Cantor Index Long Walk Hurdle at Kempton on December 16, comfortably beating Deano's Beeno by 14 lengths. Since that impressive performance J P McManus has purchased the six-year-old Alesso gelding. A winner of three of his previous seven hurdle starts, including a Grade 2 event at Auteuil last November, Baracouda also finished second behind Le Sauvignon in a Grade 1 at the same track earlier in the same month.
21F-13322 BOUNCE BACK (USA) 5 ch g Trempolino-Lattaquie (Fast Topaze)
Owner: Wendy Sainer Trainer: Francois Doumen
The Francois Doumen-trained Bounce Back has made one previous appearance in England, competing in the Glenlivet Anniversary 4-Y-O Novices' Hurdle at Aintree last April when falling at the second last while still in the lead. Also entered in Smurfit Champion Hurdle.
110-115 DARASTAN (FR) 6 b g Dastaan-Daraka (Akarad)
Owner: Cyriaque Diard Trainer: Cyriaque Diard
One of two entries for trainer Cyriaque Diard, Darastan boast some good form over hurdle in France including when taking the Grade 3 Prix Juigne over 2m 2f at Auteuil by eight lengths on February 28 last year. He has gone on to score twice since then and appears to relish testing underfoot conditions.
1FR-2F1 HAVRE DE THAIX (FR) 6 b g Roi De Rome-Une Amie (Prove It Baby)
Owner: Cyriaque Diard Trainer: Cyriaque Diard
Has been successful three times in the French Provinces with victories at Les Sables-D'Olonnel and Pau (twice). This half-bred also managed to win a valuable hurdle at Auteuil in December 1999 over 2m 2f. In September last year he finished second to subsequent runaway Pertemps King George VI Chase winner and Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup favourite, First Gold, in a 2m 4 f hurdle at Auteuil, being beaten three lengths.
20-1111 LE SAUVIGNON (FR) 7 b g Morespeed-Tarde (Kashtan)
Owner: David J Jackson Trainer: Jehan Bertran de Balanda
A high-class performer with four successes at Auteuil so far this season. Put up a decent performance on his second outing this campaign, when he landed the Grade 2 Grand Course de Haies D'Auteuil over 3m 1 f, defeating Full Of Ambition. On his last appearance on November 1 last year he defeated Baracouda half a length in the Grade 1 Grand Prix d'Automne over three miles. Although British-owned, he has yet to venture this side of the Channel.
GERMAN-TRAINED ENTRY FOR THE 2001 BONUSPRINT STAYERS' HURDLE
1-3 VISHNU (GER) 6 b h Shareef Dancer-Vinca (King Of Macedon)
Owner: Stall Jenny Trainer: Christian Von Der Recke
Vishnu is trained by Christian Von Der Recke and has had just two outings over hurdles. On his debut over timber he won the Humbel-Rennen at Mannheim on May 1, 1999, but was then not seen over obstacles again until July of last year. On that outing he finished third in the Preis des Gestuts Sybille at Bad Harzburg. Vishnu's latest performances have been on the Flat and in that sphere he has twice been placed third in Group Three races at Dusseldorf and Baden-Baden.
DREAM MAY REAPPEAR BEFORE FESTIVAL
Saturday's Victor Chander Chase heroine Function Dream may make another appearance before a crack at the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
Trainer Mary Reveley reported this morning: She seems all right after Saturday.
"She may run somewhere in February. I don't know where yet - I've nothing definite in mind.
Reveley went on to explain that leading conditional Tony Ross is to keep the ride on the mare: "We always thought he was a good lad and he gave her a very good ride on Saturday.
Commenting on Function Dream's 35lb climb in the rating Reveley explained: "She always went all right and we thought she might win a race but we didn't think she'd turn out to be that good."
LATEST NEWS FROM NAD AL SHEBA
Al Quoz representative Glad Master had further strength to the form of the inaugural UAE Derby last season when causing a mild surprise in the Al Fahidi Fort Prep over 1,500m on the turf at Nad Al Sheba last Sunday night.
Following on from Al Quoz¹s success in the Al Rashidiya Prep the previous Thursday, Glad Master went into Sunday¹s race having had just the two starts since his ninth placing behind stablemate China Visit in the UAE Derby last March.
Ridden by John Carroll, Glad Master took the lead at the top of the straight and despite giving away a fitness advantage he held on to defeat the Listed National Day Cup winner Superiority and Dehoush.
"He was beginning to idle close to the line but the addition of the visor helped him a great deal and he did concentrate better with them," Carroll said.
Glad Master is yet another winner that emerged from the UAE Derby last year following on from horses such as the Classic winners Crimplene, Bachir, Pacino, Compton Bolter, Broche, Curule, Shouf Al Badou and Trinculo.
New Zealand trainer Graeme Rogerson strengthened his claim on the inaugural Dhs1,000,000 Pearls of Dubai with the victory of debutante Dancing Pistol and Pinctada Pearl at Nad Al Sheba last Sunday night. The double with his Pearls of Dubai graduates ended a good weekend for Rogerson with the victory of Flying Springbok at Jebel Ali last Friday and all three winners are virtually assured of a start at Nad Al Sheba on March 15.
Maybe A Chance also moved up the order of entry with his second placing behind Dancing Pistol.
Pinctada Pearl's victory took her to the top of the Order of Entry, her two wins from three starts taking her above the sales topping filly Just Call Me who held the lead briefly after her second win from as many starts at Nad Al Sheba last Thursday night. Al Quoz Stables have a five strong entry in Thursday night¹s opening round of the Maktoum Challenge for thoroughbreds, heading the entries is the 2000 UAE Derby winner China Visit.
The remaining quartet is made up of Broche, Pacino, Zoning and Siege, winner of the opening round of the Maktoum Challenge in 1999/2000, while Paddy Rudkin has entered the promising Shibl.
Nick Robb has entered Alboostan, impressive first-up winner last time out, as well as the Godolphin Mile winner Conflict.
