THE VALUE BETTING COLUMN EVERY SATURDAY

ASCOT, SATURDAY, JANUARY 13, 2001

BP=best price of Coral (C), William Hill (H), Ladbrokes (L) and the Tote (T)
Going-GOOD TO SOFT

2pm £60,000 VICTOR CHANDLER CHASE, 2 MILES

1) 11-17 TIUTCHEV Nicky Henderson 8-11-10 Mick Fitzgerald
Tiutchev won last season's Irish Independent Arkle Chase at the National Hunt Festival. He recently lost his unbeaten record over fences when well behind Flagship Uberalles at Cheltenham last month. Trainer Nicky Henderson and jockey Mick Fitzgerald both claim that Tiutchev will strip a lot fitter today but he still has something to prove. BP=4 H, L

2) 5-122 GET REAL Nicky Henderson 10-11-08 John Kavanagh
Course specialist Get Real had victory snatched away on his last two starts in handicaps, getting caught when looking like the winner on both occasions. The fact that Mick Fitzgerald has chosen Tiutchev is interesting, leaving this most consistent horse good value. BP=8 L

3) -2444 CENKOS Oliver Sherwood 7-11-07 Robert Flavin (7)
Trainer Oliver Sherwood has employed Robert Flavin to take 7lb off Cenkos' back today. The seven-year-old ran well when fourth to Carlovent in a hadicap here in November, and is 5lb better off with the second Get Real for a four-length beating, but his last run was very disappointing and he needs to improve on that to finish in the shake-up here. BP=14 T

4) 17111 FUNCTION DREAM Mary Reveley 9-11-00 Alan Ross (3)
Mary Reveley waxed lyrical about Function Dream's jumping last time at Wetherby on Boxing Day and the nine-year-old has been an absolute revelation this season scoring on four occasions. This is a tougher assignment for the mare, but she's a very worthy favourite on her recent form and she is ahead of the handicapper here. The question is whether 7/4 is value on ground that may be faster than she wants and there is also Mary Reveley's poor Southern big-race record to consider BP=7/4 C, T

5) 83P13 CELIBATE Charlie Mann 10-10-11 Noel Fehilly
Lambourn-based handler Charlie Mann was over the moon when Celibate won a handicap chase over course and distance in December over Get Real and is 4lb worse in with that horse for his half a length victory. However he was comprehensively beaten by Function Dream last time at Wetherby (by 26 lengths) and even with a 6lb pull should not help him that much . BP=14 T

6) -1612 DAVOSKI Venetia Williams 7-10-10 Norman Williamson
1lb better in with Function Dream compared with their recent outing at Wetherby and has a 13 length deficit to make up, but once again there seems no overwhelming reason why placings should be reversed except a hunch. Davoski has had a fantastic season winning twice and is very consistent. He has been rising in the weights but seems to have been coping with that. Suited by a fast pace and, as long as he avoids jumping errors, is excellent each-way value under the wily Norman Williamson. BP=8 T

7) 0-514 CARLOVENT Martin Pipe 6-10-06 Richard Johnson
Carlovent was successful here over course and distance in November under a truly masterful ride from Tony McCoy, just beating Get Real and they are handicapped here to dead-heat. However, he returned here last month and was beaten a distance, jumping poorly Has something to prove. BP=25 C

8) 21022 CORNICHE Nigel Twiston-Davies 6-10-03 Carl Llewellyn
Corniche is still a novice but he has been mixing it with the best. On his last appearance in handicap company he would not settle in the Thomas Pink Gold Cup at Cheltenham and was beaten by a distance. However, every horse should be forgiven one bad run and he is obviously highly-regarded by Nigel Twiston-Davies who has entered the six-year-old in the Queen Mother Champion Chase. However, last season he was beaten by both Tiutchev and Cenkos but is not guaranteed to turn the tables at these weights. A front-runner who has Get Real and others doing the same which may set the race up for another contender. BP=22 C

9) 2P142 RED ARK Norman Mason 8-10-01 P Ryan (5)
Red Ark's early season target was the First National Bank Gold Cup at Ascot in November, but he had to miss that and instead won at Newbury the following weekend.

Raised 9lb for that victory over two and a half miles, the handicapper seems to have got his mark now and he is probably best watched today, especially over this two miles. BP=18 C

10) 51-26 EXIT SWINGER Martin Pipe 6-10-00 (9-10) Tony McCoy
4lb out of the handicap, but not far enough out that Martin Pipe could not win here with him. Second to stablemate Lady Cricket in the Thomas Pink Gold Cup at Cheltenham, he was raised 2lb for that performance, but he disappointed last time in the Tripleprint Gold Cup. Pipe's stable has been going through a quiet time and Exit Swinger is unproven at this much shorter trip in top company. BP=8 H, L

SUMMARY
A most competitive and enthralling contest which is a difficult one to work out. However, DAVOSKI comes from an in-form team and looks great value each way.

GOOD LUCK

Disciplinary Hearing to be held into Lingfield Abandonment

The Disciplinary Committee of the Jockey Club will be holding an enquiry to consider whether or not Arena Leisure Plc, the Managing Executive of Lingfield Park Racecourse, have committed a breach of Rule 80 (ii) (a) of the Rules of Racing in that the inspection protocol was not followed by the Racecourse Executive following the acting Clerk of the Course's inspection of the track at 6.00am on the morning of racing, when it was found that the pad on the all weather track was frozen.

The Committee will also consider whether or not Arena Leisure Plc have committed a breach of Rule 220 (iii) of the Rules of Racing, in respect of their failure to keep owners, trainers, jockeys and the general public fully appraised of the state of the course, and the chances of racing taking place at Lingfield Park on 30th December 2000.

1. The meeting on December 30th was eventually abandoned by the Stewards following an inspection as a result of the concerns expressed by the jockeys after they arrived at the start for the first race.

2. No date for the enquiry has been set.

3. The Jockey Club's General Instructions, which are issued to all racecourses, include an inspection protocol.

EMIRATES REVIEW - Jebel Ali
Friday January 12, 2001

Flying Springbok, bred in New Zealand, trained in Dubai and owned in South Africa threw down the gauntlet to the expensive filly Just Call Me with an impressive performance at Jebel Ali.

Just Call Me, the Dhs2,000,000 top price at the Pearls of Dubai Auction, went to the top of the order of entry for the Dhs1,000,000 Pearls of Dubai Sales Graduate Stakes over 1,800m at Nad Al Sheba on March 15, following her impressive performance at Nad Al Sheba on Thursday night.

However, even before the hype of her victory had quietened down came the impressive performance of Flying Springbok, bought by noted South African bloodstock agent Robin Bruss for Dhs170,000 at the Pearls of Dubai Auction, at Jebel Ali the next day.

The son of Thunder Gulch from the former quality mare Tessuti ran greenly all the way up the 1,200m straight course. However, his ability got him to the line grabbing Pikachu in the final stages.

Flying Springbok is raced by the Team South Africa Syndicate and prepared by new Zealand trainer Graeme Rogerson in Dubai. The Rogerson Stable felt both sides of racing in the race with the expensive colt Troublesome Lad broke through the barrier prior to the start and was a late withdrawal.

Troublesome Lad is a product of dual hemisphere breeding, being by the champion stallion Unfuwain from Australia¹s former champion filly Tristanagh.

Flying Springbok was the first leg of a winning double for Richard Hills, the jockey combining later in the programme to win on Alhasad for trainer Nick Robb.

Dhruba Selvaratnam and pat Smullen had a welcome return to form when winning the first and final events on the programme with Fee du Cassou and Yajree while others to ride John Carroll and Michael Hills.
