STODDART SADDLES UP AS GO RACING CHIEF EXECUTIVE
The Go Racing consortium, formed by Channel 4, BSkyB and Arena Leisure, has recruited GMTV's Managing Director, Christopher Stoddart, to become its new Chief Executive.
Stoddart, who prior to joining the ITV breakfast broadcaster in 1992 was Managing Director of The Racing Channel's parent company Satellite Information Services (SIS), will take up his new role from May this year.
David Scott, Channel 4's Managing Director, on behalf of Go Racing, said: "To have recruited such an experienced and high profile broadcaster with the knowledge of racing that Christopher possesses is a major coup for Go Racing. It is a statement of serious intent on the part of Go Racing's shareholders to begin delivering on our exciting plans for the future coverage of the sport."
Stoddart added: "Having steered GMTV onto the air, to editorial and commercial success and through licence renewal, Go Racing represents a fresh challenge for me. Having worked for SIS during its start-up period and as a regular racegoer, I believe Go Racing is poised to transform the coverage of the sport for the benefit of its millions of armchair fans and for the industry as a whole."
As Managing Director since the start-up of GMTV, Stoddart has seen the company through from launch of broadcasting on 1 January 1993 to its current position as the leading breakfast-time broadcaster. In 2000, GMTV achieved profits before tax of £7.6 million, 20% ahead of 1999.
Prior to joining GMTV, he was Managing Director of SIS between 1988 and 1992 and was previously Director of Resources at Tyne Tees Television.

RAMSDENS GO FOR LINCOLN GLORY
A colossal 108-strong entry is announced today for the first major race of the 2001 Flat season, the historic £50,000-added Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster on Saturday, March 24.
The number of entries has only once been higher in the last five years for what is always one of the season's most popular betting races. The weights will be revealed on Wednesday, January 17.
Lynda Ramsden, who won the 1993 Lincoln with High Premium and recently resumed training after a break, is planning a two-pronged attack on the always-enthralling race with last year's winner John Ferneley and the lightly-raced Mastermind. Both horses were formerly with Paul Cole and owner John Martin bought the pair at Tattersalls last October, paying 130,000gns for John Ferneley and 100,000gns for Mastermind.
Jack Ramsden, the trainer's husband, said today: "The intention at this stage is to run both horses. We don't know much about them - they haven't done a great deal and we haven't been back for long - although Mastermind has been gelded. We are always keen to win decent handicaps like the Lincoln, although both horses look to have a lot to do."
Last season's runner-up King Priam, trained by Mark Polglase, and fourth-placed Pantar are both entered to renew rivalry with John Ferneley.
Another trainer noted for his successes in major handicaps, David Nicholls, has a powerful eight-strong team comprising a pair of one-time classic hopefuls in Desaru and Exeat, as well as Peartree House, Yarob, Kingsdon, Naviasky, Mister Rambo and Millions.
Other entries include the German Group 2 winner Crimson Tide, who is being aimed at Lingfield's All-Weather Derby in March, Man O'Mystery, who was runner-up in a Newmarket Listed event last October, and three horses trained in Ireland, including the 2000 Irish Cambridgeshire winner Silverware, from Pat Hughes' Co Carlow stable.
The Lincoln is seeking a new sponsor. Worthington previously backed the mile contest as part of a brewery deal with the racecourse but that arrangement has not yet been finalised for 2001. For those that fail to make the cut in the big race, there will once again be a consolation contest - the Spring Mile - on Friday, March 23. A public draw for stall positions in the Lincoln will take place on Thursday, March 22.
Tim Betteridge, General Manager at Doncaster Racecourse, said: "We are delighted to see so many entries for the 2001 Lincoln, highlighting its position as one of the most sought-after handicaps in Flat racing.
"It is consistently one of the top 10 betting races of the year, attracting interest in the ante-post markets for many weeks beforehand, and we hope to soon have a sponsor in place for this high-profile and historic event."

WARREN PAYS $400,000 FOR QUEEN OF NORWAY
John Warren, as agent, paid a top price of $400,000 for Queen of Norway during Wednesday's session of Keeneland's January Horses of All Ages Sale.
Voute Sales LLC sold the 5-year-old chestnut mare by Woodman out of Qena, by The Minstrel. Queen of Norway, who was offered as a racing or broodmare prospect, won the Drumtop Handicap at four after racing in France at two and three.
James T. Scatuorchiok of Rumson, N.J., who raced More Than Ready, paid the second highest price of the day--$360,000—for a 6-year-old broodmare who is pregnant to Southern Halo. Taylor Made Sales Agency, as agent, sold Hana Haru, who is by Storm Cat out of Over Your Shoulder.

MORGAN-JONES REAPPOINTED AS BHB DIRECTOR
The Industry Committee (Horseracing) Limited (ICHL) yesterday unanimously agreed the reappointment of Rhydian Morgan-Jones as a BHB Director and as Chairman of the Committee for a further four-year term with effect from June 7, 2001.
The ICHL wished to record their whole-hearted approval of Rhydian's chairmanship and their appreciation of his resolution and consistency in representing the Industry's viewpoint at the BHB Board and other gatherings.
Rhydian later said: "I am very pleased by the Committee's endorsement of my performance. I believe strongly that all those who make a living or invest in racing are entitled to representation at the highest level within a democratic and accountable regime. The last few years have been somewhat volatile in racing politics, although stimulating and enjoyable for all that. I am looking forward to playing my part as the Industry improves its financial footing and saols on into calmer waters on the back of a beneficial Media Rights deal and the sound structure of the Future Funding Plan."
