CHAMPIONS' DAY APPOACHES - ENTRIES, ANALYSIS AND STATISTICS
All roads lead to Newmarket, the Home of Racing, on Saturday 16th October for the £1m Champions' Day, the highest class raceday in the British flat racing calendar.
* Champion horses ready for the fray - AZAMOUR (winner of the 2004 Irish Champion Stakes and St James's Palace Stakes), DOYEN (winner of the 2004 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes), REFUSE TO BEND (winner of the 2004 Queen Anne Stakes and Coral-Eclipse Stakes and the 2003 UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas) and HAAFHD (winner of the 2004 UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas) are all reported on course for Newmarket's richest race of the year, the £350,000 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (Group 1).
* Champions of the future ready to make their mark - ETLAALA, SHAMARDAL, ORATORIO, ICEMAN, PERFECTPERFORMANCE and MONTGOMERY'S ARCH, who between them have swept up many of the top juvenile races of the season so far, are on course for the premier two-year-old race in Europe, the £250,000 Darley Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1).
* Champion of the past remembered - there will be a tribute to PERSIAN PUNCH, a year after his last ever victory.
* Champion jockey contenders go head-to-head - FRANKIE DETTORI and KIEREN FALLON will be trying their utmost to ride winners on the last big day of the season as they fight for the 2004 Jockeys' Championship. Remarkably, neither of Britain's top jockeys has won either of the two Group 1 races on Champions' Day before.
Full facts and figures are contained in this pack.
PERSIAN PUNCH REMEMBERED ON STAR-STUDDED CHAMPIONS' DAY
One year on from Persian Punch's final victory, when the Rowley Mile echoed to an applause probably never before heard on Newmarket Heath, the Jockey Club Cup has been renamed the Persian Punch Jockey Club Cup for one year in tribute to Jeff Smith's gallant stayer who died of a heart attack earlier this year.
Lisa Hancock, Newmarket's Managing Director, said: "It will be a poignant moment when we remember Persian Punch, who holds such a special place in many people's affections. He won more races at Newmarket than any other course including three Jockey Club Cups, the last of which was perhaps the most courageous victory of his entire career. I know that many members of his fan club are coming to Newmarket to pay tribute to him on Champions' Day."
MAN UTD GAME ON BIG SCREEN
The pay-per-view lunchtime kick-off in the Premiership, Birmingham vs Manchester United, will be shown on the big screen on the Hyperion Lawn, accessible to all racegoers in the Members' Enclosure and Grandstand & Paddock Enclosure.

CHAMPIONS' DAY FACTS
Champions' Day, which was first staged in 1997, is overall the highest-class raceday in Britain with two Group 1 races, two Group 2s, two Group 3s and one of the season's most prestigious and valuable handicaps.
Breaking £1 million for the first time with £1,020,000 in advertised prize money, it is second in the list of the most valuable cards in Britain, just behind Vodafone Derby Day at Epsom and just ahead of De Beers Diamond Day at Ascot. However, unlike these days, which rely heavily on one big race as their central focus, Champions' Day has the highest quality throughout its seven races.
The £350,000 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (G1) is Newmarket's most valuable race of the season and has its 127th anniversary in 2004.
Champions' Day is geared around established champions making their final appearance of the British season and the emergence of the champions of the future.

EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES
In last year's Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, RAKTI was highly impressive beating CARNIVAL DANCER by two lengths with RUSSIAN RHYTHM and ALAMSHAR back in fifth and sixth respectively. Michael Jarvis's winner had won the 2002 Italian Derby (G1) when trained by Bruno Grizzetti before winning the Premio Presidente della Repubblica (G1) on his first start for the Newmarket handler. This season Rakti has added further Group One successes in the form of the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot last month.
In the 2002 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, STORMING HOME defeated MOON BALLAD. Storming Home was subsequently transferred to the yard of Neil Drysdale where he went on to be one of the leading turf horses in North America in 2003 with victories in the Charles Whittingham Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park and the Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship (G1) at Santa Anita. He was also first past the post in the Arlington Million (G1) and captured the $400,000 Jim Murray Handicap at Santa Anita. He was last seen in action when seventh in the G1 John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita. Moon Ballad was later successful in the world's richest race, the Dubai World Cup (G1), at Nad Al Sheba the following March and was retired in 2003 to take up stud duties in Japan.
In 2001 NAYEF underlined his class by winning his first Group 1 race which he added to in 2002 with victories in the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) at Nad Al Sheba and the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1) at York while last season he landed the Prince Of Wales's Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot. He attempted to win a second Emirates Airline Champion Stakes last year but could only finish eighth behind Rakti.
In the 2000 Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, two of the world's middle distance superstars, KALANISI and MONTJEU, fought out the finish. Three weeks later, KALANISI beat America's best turf horses in the Breeders' Cup Turf (G1).
Sir Mark Prescott's filly ALBORADA recorded back-to-back victories in 1998 and 1999. Her first triumph saw World Series Champion DAYLAMI take third place while she was a length and a quarter too strong for SHIVA in 1999.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained PILSUDSKI was the victorious horse in 1997. He had earlier won both the Coral Eclipse (G1) and Irish Champion Stakes (G1) that season and followed up on his Newmarket success by taking the Japan Cup (G1) on the final start of his career.
TWO STRONG GROUP ONE EVENTS PLUS MORE
Both of the Group One events on Champions' Day, the Darley Dewhurst Stakes and the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes look sure to have outstanding line-ups.
A total of 28 horses remain engaged in the £350,000 Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, the highlight of Champions Day at Newmarket, Saturday, October 16, after the final forfeit stage.
AZAMOUR (John Oxx, IRE) was declared an intended starter for Newmarket after he was successful in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on September 11, when he had NORSE DANCER (David Elsworth) half a length behind him.
A major disappointment in the Irish Champion Stakes was King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes hero DOYEN (Saeed bin Suroor), one of four remaining entries for Godolphin.
He could be joined by REFUSE TO BEND, victorious earlier this season in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot and Coral Eclipse at Sandown, when he had the dual Vodafone Coronation Cup scorer WARRSAN in second. MAMOOL, winner of the Group Three September Stakes at Kempton as well as SULAMANI, last seen out when defeating Norse Dancer in the Juddmonte International at York, are the other two contenders from Godolphin, still seeking its first Emirates Airline Champion Stakes win.
The best of the three-year-olds are UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas hero HAAFHD (Barry Hills), the Vodafone and Irish Oaks heroine OUIJA BOARD (Ed Dunlop), GREY SWALLOW (Dermot Weld, IRE), who defeated Vodafone Derby winner North Light in the Irish Derby at the Curragh, as well as the rapidly-improving performer MISTER MONET (Mark Johnston) who has progressed from winning handicaps to landing the Group Two Prix Guillaume d'Ornano at Deauville last time.
Last year's winner RAKTI (Michael Jarvis) is still engaged and was a most impressive winner of the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on September 25, when he was half a length too strong for LUCKY STORY (Mark Johnston).
Aidan O'Brien has five entries going forward including the exciting prospect ACE and ACROPOLIS, an excellent fourth in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe while there are two possible contenders from France - recent Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner BAGO (Jonathan Pease, FR) and the unexposed APSIS (Andre Fabre, FR), who recently made a promising seasonal reappearance. Danish challenger DANO-MAST (Flemming Poulson, DEN), 10th last year, is a possible again.
Other leading contenders include MUBTAKER (Marcus Tregoning), runner-up to Dalakhani in last season's Pix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the enigmatic SALSELON (Luca Cumani).
VINTAGE DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES IN PROSPECT
A vintage renewal of the £250,000 Group Darley Dewhurst Stakes looks in prospect with 28 juveniles remaining after the September 28 forfeit stage.
ETLAALA (Barry Hills) looked very exciting when taking the Group Two Champagne Stakes at Doncaster earlier this month, when he was half a length too powerful for ICEMAN (John Gosden), who had previously won the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. John Gosden's colt made his latest appearance in the Group One Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket on October 1, when he finished third behind AD VALOREM (Aidan O'Brien IRE).
SHAMARDAL (Mark Johnston) caught many people's attention when taking the Group Two Vintage Stakes at Goodwood in July and could bid to further his reputation at Goodwood while MONTGOMERY'S ARCH (Peter Chapple-Hyam) was also impressive at the same meeting when landing the Group Two Richmond Stakes. He could be joined by stable companion CAPTAIN HURRICANE, triumphant in the Group Two TNT July Stakes at the Newmarket July Meeting.
Godolphin has three possibles remaining including recent Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes victor PERFECTPERFORMANCE and the unbeaten LIBRETTIST, last seen out when landing a conditions race at the Doncaster St Leger meeting.
Aidan O'Brien, who record a memorable 1-2-3 in the 2001 Darley Dewhurst Stakes headed by the amazing Rock Of Gibraltar, has eight entries remaining, including recent Group One Shadwell Stud Middle Park Stakes scorer AD VALOREM, Group One Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner ORATORIO as well as Group Two victor RUSSIAN BLUE.
Two other exciting contenders could prove to be recent Newbury maiden winner NEWSROUND (Michael Jarvis) and HOME AFFAIRS (Sir Michael Stoute), who was most impressive when landing a maiden at Yarmouth on September 15.
58 IN totesport CESAREWITCH
The £130,000 totesport Cesarewitch, the big handicap on Champions' Day, has 58 horses going forward at the September 28 forfeit stage.
All of the leading contenders remain engaged in the marathon two mile, two furlong event, including the current ante-post market leaders ESCAYOLA (William Haggas) and NO REFUGE (Sir Mark Prescott) as well as Dermot Weld's two strong contenders DIRECT BEARING (second in 2002 and fourth last year) and ORPINGTON.
53 ENTERED IN VICTOR CHANDLER CHALLENGE STAKES
The £100,000 Group Two Victor Chandler Challenge Stakes on Champions Day has received 53 entries.
Godolphin has five entries for the seven-furlong contest including the consistent FIREBREAK while Aidan O'Brien has six to choose from including the promising performer ACE and ANTONIUS PIUS, first past the post in the French 2,000 Guineas.
The three-year-old contingent is headed by PASTORAL PURSUITS (Hughie Morrison), who caught the eye when defeating Firebreak in the Group Two Park Stakes at Doncaster earlier this month.
There are a brace of entries from France - RATIO (John Hammond), winner of the 2002 Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot, and KELTOS (Carlos Laffon-Parias), victorious in the Group One Lockinge Stakes at Newbury in 2002.
Other interesting entries include seven-furlong specialist NAYYIR (Gerard Butler), recently an excellent fourth in the Group One Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and SOMNUS (Tim Easterby), winner of 2003 Haydock Sprint Cup and second in the same contest again this year.

EMIRATES AIRLINE CHAMPION STAKES FACTS
* The inaugural Emirates Airline Champion Stakes took place in 1877 and was won by Springfield.
* The Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, which is for three-year-olds and upwards, is run over a distance of one mile and two furlongs and was sponsored for the first time in 2002 by Emirates Airline, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates. The Emirates connection is not new however as the ruling Maktoum family of Dubai have generously supported the contest since 1982.
* The only horse to have been successful three times was Tristan in 1882, 1883 and 1884, while there have been 10 dual winners. The Sir Mark Prescott-trained Alborada is the latest of them, taking the 1998 and 1999 renewals. The other dual winners are Triptych (1986, 1987), Brigadier Gerard (1971, 1972), Dynamiter (1951, 1952), Hippius (1940, 1941), Wychwood Abbot (1935, 1936), Fairway (1928, 1929), Orpheus (1920, 1921), Lemberg (1910, 1911) and Velasquez (1897, 1898). This year Rakti could bid to win the race for a second time, having previously been successful in last year's renewal.
* The longest-priced post-war winner was Hurry Harriet at 33/1 in 1973.
* Backers did not receive much of a return for their money when Ormonde came in at 1/100 in 1886, making him the shortest-priced winner. Since 1945 the shortest-priced scorer was Petite Etoile at 2/11 in 1959.
* The two most successful trainers since 1945 have been Sir Noel Murless and Patrick Biancone with three victories apiece. The former's wins came with Hugh Lupus in 1956, Petite Etoile three years later and Lorenzaccio in 1970, while Biancone, who was then based in France and is now in America, scored with Palace Music in 1984 and Triptych twice in 1986 and 1987.
* Current trainers with two victories each are Henry Cecil (Indian Skimmer 1988 and Bosra Sham 1996), Andre Fabre (Tel Quel 1991 and Dernier Empereur 1994), Sir Mark Prescott (Alborada 1998 and 1999), Sir Michael Stoute (Pilsudski 1997 and Kalanisi 2000) and Barry Hills (1983 Cormorant Wood and Storming Home 2002).
* Lester Piggott is the most successful jockey since 1945, winning on five occasions, with his last victory coming on Rodrigo De Triano in 1992. His other four successes came on Petite Etoile (1959), Pieces Of Eight (1966), Sir Ivor (1968) and Giacometti (1974). The most successful current jockey is George Duffield, victorious on the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Alborada in 1998 and 1999. Duffield will not be in action in this year's contest due to a damaged shoulder.
* Fillies and mares have an extremely good record in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes - with 22 of the 59 runnings since 1945 captured by members of the fairer sex. The winning run started in 1957 and since 1980 mares and fillies have won a dozen times.
* Three-year-olds have fared much the best since 1945. Horses of classic age have taken 40 renewals as opposed to 15 winning four-year-olds and four successful five-year-olds. No horse older than five has won during this time.
* The largest fields since 1945 were in 1976 and 1983 when 19 contestants went to post. Last year there were 12 starters. Only three horses took part in 1959 - the smallest number since 1945.
* Five Irish-trained horses have tasted success since 1945. The first was Arctic Storm, trained by John Oxx snr, in 1962. The other four winners from the Emerald Isle were Pieces Of Eight (Vincent O'Brien 1966), Sir Ivor (Vincent O'Brien 1968), Hurry Harriet (Paddy Mullins 1973) and Cairn Rouge (Michael Cunningham 1980).
* French-trained horses have seen off the opposition on 19 occasions since 1945. The most recent French-trained winner was Andre Fabre's Dernier Empereur in 1994. Marguerite Vernaut was the sole success for Italy in 1960.
* In 1933 the judge called a dead-heat between Dastur and Chatelaine.

DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS
In last year's Darley Dewhurst Stakes MILK IT MICK got the better of THREE VALLEYS by a head in a marvellous finish with HAAFHD and BACHELOR DUKE in third and fourth respectively. Haafhd returned to Newmarket in May to capture this season's UltimateBet.com 2000 Guineas, while Bachelor Duke was successful in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh three weeks later.
The 2002 Darley Dewhurst Stakes went to TOUT SEUL, who defeated TOMAHAWK and TRADE FAIR. Tout Seul finished fourth in the 2000 Guineas in 2003 while Trade Fair was successful three times in 2003, including the Betfair Criterion Stakes (G3) at Newmarket in June, and he also won the Emirates Airline Minstrel Stakes (G3) at the Curragh this season.
In the 2001 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR beat LANDSEER with WHERE OR WHEN a close fourth. At the time it was considered by some to be a sub-standard Dewhurst. The feats of this trio the following season proved otherwise! ROCK OF GIBRALTAR won both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas and ended his career with seven Group One victories; LANDSEER won the French 2,000 Guineas (G1) and the Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile (G1); WHERE OR WHEN proved his class with a scintillating victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1) at Ascot. In all, they registered eight Group One victories between them in 2002.
In the 2000 Darley Dewhurst Stakes, TOBOUGG stamped himself Britain's top two-year-old colt, beating NOVERRE, who went on to win the 2001 French 2000 Guineas (G1) (before subsequent disqualification) and the Sussex Stakes (G1), with MOZART, crowned Europe's champion sprinter in 2001, back in fourth.

DARLEY DEWHURST STAKES FACTS
* The Dewhurst Stakes was first run in 1875 when Kisber was successful.
* The Group One Darley Dewhurst Stakes, for two-year-old colts and fillies, is run over seven furlongs. Although fillies can run, they rarely do so nowadays and the last to win was Torbella III in 1957.
* Two dead-heats have occurred. The first happened in 1910 when the judge was unable to separate King William and Phryxus. More recently there was nothing to choose between Prince Of Dance and Scenic in 1988.
* Those racegoers who backed Generous in 1990 could afford to live up to his name as he was returned at 50/1 - the longest-priced winner. Milk It Mick came close in 2003 returned at 33/1. The shortest-priced winner was Orme at 6/100 in 1891, while the shortest-priced scorer since 1945 was the great Nijinsky at 1/3 in 1969.
* The largest field since 1945 was 16 in 2002, bettering the previous highest of 13 which faced the starter in 1966. Mill Reef scared off the opposition in 1970 when only two others went to post, making it the smallest field in the same time period.
* Possibly the greatest trainer of all time, Vincent O'Brien, is the most successful in the Dewhurst Stakes since 1945 with seven victories. Nijinsky posted the first O'Brien success in 1969, followed by Cellini four seasons later, The Minstrel in 1976, Try My Best 1977, Monteverdi 1979, Storm Bird 1980 and, lastly, El Gran Senor in 1983.
* Two current trainers have the best records with three successes. French handler Andre Fabre has Zafonic (1992), Pennekamp (1994) and Xaar (1997) to thank, while Lambourn-based Barry Hills first succeeded in 1988 with Scenic and he followed up with In Command in 1996 and Distant Music in 1999.
* Of the jockeys, Lester Piggott has the best record since 1945 in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes winning an incredible 10 times - with Crepello (1956), Follow Suit (1962), Ribofilio (1968), Nijinsky (1969), Crowned Prince (1971), Cellini (1973), The Minstrel (1976), Try My Best (1977), Monteverdi (1979) and Diesis (1982).
* Pat Eddery, who retired at the end of last season, trails Piggott's tally by four having got off the mark in 1972 on Lunchtime. He followed up on Grundy (1974), Storm Bird (1980), El Gran Senor (1983), Zafonic (1992) and Grand Lodge (1993). On his last ride in the race he finished seventh on Balmont.
* Michael Hills is the leading current rider. His four victories came courtesy of Huntingdale (1985), Scenic (1988), In Command (1996) and Distant Music (1999).
* Since 1945, Irish-trained horses have the edge on their French counterparts by two victories, having gained eight successes as opposed to six. Seven of the eight Irish-trained winners were handled by Vincent O'Brien, while his successor at Ballydoyle, Aidan O'Brien, was responsible for 2001 winner Rock Of Gibraltar. The latter went on to record seven consecutive Group One victories, beating Mill Reef's previous best of six.
* The sextet of French-trained successes are Emperor II (1949), Marsyad (1951), Torbella III (1957), Zafonic (1992), Pennekamp (1994) and Xaar (1997), the last three of whom were all trained by Andre Fabre.
* The Darley Dewhurst Stakes is a well-known classic trial, with winners like Rock Of Gibraltar, Pennekamp, Zafonic, El Gran Senor and Wollow going on to score in the 2000 Guineas and Dr Devious, Generous, The Minstrel, Grundy, Mill Reef and Nijinsky (who also won the 2000 Guineas and St Leger) taking the Derby.

totesport CESAREWITCH FACTS
* The inaugural running of the Cesarewitch took place in 1839 and was won by Cuiskeen.
* This prestigious handicap, run over two miles and two furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards, was sponsored for the first time in 1971 and has been backed by totesport since 1978.
* Punters who backed Audrey in 1861 or Charley's Mount in 1924 were rewarded by the longest-priced winners in the history of the race at 100/1. Those supporters of Private Audition in 1987 were not complaining either as the horse was returned at 50/1 (75/1 with totepool) - the longest-priced winner since 1945.
* The shortest-priced winner came in 1859 when Artless was returned at 5/6, the only odds-on winner in the history of the race. Chantry at 4/1 in 1953 was the shortest-priced victor since 1945.
* Ryan Price and Ian Balding are the most successful trainers with three victories apiece since 1945. Price's first was with Utrillo in 1963, followed by Persian Lancer three years later and Major Rose in 1968. Balding's trio came courtesy of Centurion in 1978, Top Cees five years ago and Distant Prospect in 2001.
* If Martin Pipe is able to supply this year's winner then he will draw level with Balding and Price. Pipe struck in 2002 with Miss Fara, having taken the race two years earlier with Heros Fatal.
* Doug Smith is the most successful jockey since 1945. He gained three victories in the 1950s through French Design (1954), Sandiacre (1957), and Come To Daddy (1959). He followed up with two more wins in the next decade with Alcove in 1960 and Persian Lancer six years later. He was also successful in 1939 on Cantatrice giving him a total of six wins.
* Gary Carter is the only current rider to have won more than once, partnering Private Audition in 1987 and Heros Fatal in 2000.
* Dermot Weld saddled the last Irish-trained winner, Vintage Crop in 1993, while the last French-trained winner, Monsieur L'Amiral, came from the yard of Emile Charlier in 1946.
* The largest post-war field was 38 in 1950, while the smallest was 11 in 1977 and 1979. The maximum field these days for safety reasons is 36 which is the number of horses that lined up last year.
* The last mare to win before Miss Fara in 2002 was Double Dutch in 1989.
* The 1976 scorer John Cherry carried the highest weight of 9st 13lb to victory while Top Cees, successful in 1999, was the oldest winner at nine.
* Morecambe has the post-war record of the longest winning distance when scoring by 10 lengths in 1958, a margin which the 1998 winner Spirit Of Love got close to - when nine lengths clear.
* Horses nowadays do not contest the totesport Autumn Double, the totesport Cesarewitch and totesport Cambridgeshire, but amazingly three horses in the nineteenth century not only participated in the two legs but won both races. The trio were Rosebery in 1876, Foxhall five seasons later and Plaisanterie in 1885.
* The last trainer to complete the totesport Autumn Double in the same year was Sam Darling in 1925.
* No horse has ever been able to win the totesport Cesarewitch twice.
ROBUST TRADE AS TATTERSALLS OCTOBER YEARLING SALE CONTINUES
The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 1 continued with strong trade on the second day as 112 yearlings sold for 16,932,000 guineas at an average of 151,178 guineas and a median of 120,000 guineas. Of particular note was the strength of the middle market with 65 yearlings breaking the six figure barrier and 24 breaching the 200,000 guineas mark. Demand for the stock of ill-fated stallion DANEHILL continued in similar fashion to yesterday, but it was first season stallion GALILEO who topped the days proceedings and stole the show from his former Coolmore counterpart as his ten yearlings to sell realised a total of 2,377,000 guineas.
Lot 237, a son of GALILEO out of the Group 1 winning KRIS mare BALISADA was offered from Hascombe Stud and it was to prove another red-letter day for the Stud's owner Anthony Oppenheimer following his 750,000 guineas DANEHILL colt sold yesterday. It is rare that John Magnier has to settle for second best, but when Charlie Gordon-Watson bid 700,000 guineas, the Coolmore supremo called time. Gordon-Watson purchased the colt out of the Group 1 Coronation Stakes winner on behalf of Saeed Suhail, the Derby and 2000 Guineas winning owner who has had great success with purchases from Tattersalls including Group 1 winning two year old DILSHAAN.
The second highest priced lot for the day was Lot 200, the SADLER'S WELLS colt out of the MTOTO mare SUMOTO. The half brother to the Group 1 winning pair COMPTON ADMIRAL and SUMMONER was consigned from Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber's Watership Down Stud. Following initial interest from Charlie Gordon-Watson, it was John Magnier who finally saw off a dogged challenge from Lambourn based trainer Charlie Egerton to secure the colt for 580,000 guineas.
Demand for the yearlings by GALILEO continued with Lot 250, a colt out of the stakes placed CHILD PRODIGY, a half sister to three time Group 1 winner KUTUB. The colt, who was one of nine purchases for the day for John Magnier, was secured for 420,000 guineas and represented another pinhooking triumph for Camas Park Stud's Timmy Hyde. Hyde had purchased the colt at last year's Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 280,000 guineas and with two days of the October Yearling Sale Part 1 completed, Camas Park Stud have sold 12 yearlings for 3,020,000 guineas.
Breeders' Cup Mile winner WAR CHANT has had a promising start to his stud career with several prominent two year old performers in the US and demand for his two yearlings on offer on the second day was predictably strong. The first of these was Lot 283, a filly out of the SEATTLE SLEW mare GOSSAMER and a half sister to this year's Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner BACHELOR DUKE. Consigned from Sonia Rogers' Airlie Stud, the filly was purchased by Newmarket based agent Margaret O'Toole for 400,000 guineas after she saw off the determined effort of Shadwell Estate's Racing Manager Angus Gold. O'Toole purchased the filly on behalf of Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O'Leary. The other WAR CHANT yearling on offer on day 2 was Lot 301, a colt out of the Stakes winning mare LA GANDILIE. Consigned from Cathal Ryan's Swordlestown Stud, the colt was purchased by Charlie Gordon-Watson for 260,000 guineas, taking the London-based agent's two day tally to 22 purchases for 3,352,000
guineas.
The Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continues at 11.30am today 227 lots catalogued.
