THE RACE FOR YORKSHIRE HONOURS IS HOTTING UP

With just over four weeks left of the 2004 British Flat season on turf, the races to be the leading trainer and jockey on the Yorkshire racecourses this year are both wide open.

The Sky Bet ‘Go Racing in Yorkshire’ Waterford Crystal Trophies are presented to the trainer and jockey recording the most number of winners on the Yorkshire racecourses during the campaign and both categories could still be up for grabs on the final day of the British season, which takes place at Doncaster on Saturday, November 6.

The battle for the trainer’s title is headed by Tim Easterby and Mark Johnston, who are locked together on 31 winners each, with Richard Fahey well in contention with 28 winners, along with Saeed bin Suroor, who has recorded 23 winners this season on the Yorkshire tracks.

It’s even closer as far as the jockey’s prize is concerned, with Tony Culhane and Robert Winston neck and neck on 33 winners apiece, with Paul Hanagan on the 32-winner mark. Neil Callan (26 winners) along with Kevin Darley and Kieren Fallon (both on 22 winners) are all in contention, as the season reaches a resounding conclusion at Doncaster next month.

The specially-commissioned Waterford Crystal Trophies will be presented to the respective winners at the ‘Go Racing in Yorkshire’ Annual Lunch at the end of November, an event also sponsored by Sky Bet.

TUDHOPE SECURES SEPTEMBER AWARD

Eighteen-year-old Danny Tudhope is the Cocked Hat Northern Apprentice of the Month for September, after riding four winners during the month.

Danny, who hails from Irvine in Ayrshire, is apprenticed to trainer Declan Carroll, at Warthill near York. He recently won the 2004 betfair.com Apprentice Series at Pontefract, based on a points system – the prize for which is a fortnight’s working holiday during the winter based at Gulfstream Park, Miami under the tutelage of a leading United States trainer.

The award is supported by Cocked Hat Farm Foods Ltd. of Ripon as part of the company’s involvement in the Northern Flat Jockeys’ Championship, The ‘Cock o’ The North’ Award. With just over four weeks to go in the 2004 British Flat season on turf, Robert Winston leads the way with 80 winners, closely pursued by the past winner of this award on many occasions, Kevin Darley, who has recorded 77 successes, while Tony Culhane and Paul Hanagan have both ridden 76 winners. The competition is based on the official Jockeys’ Championship season, between March 25 and November 6.
